  • A question is raised on the tagging mailing list about restaurants that allow customers to bring in their own alcoholic drinks.
  • Some mappers wonder why thoroughly mapped amenities like schools, churches and other buildings do not show up as expected. This was discussed (de) (automatic translation) in detail on the German forum, and on the Tagging mailing list.
  • Manohar Erikipati (manoharuss) writes about OpenStreetMap Changeset Analyzer (OSMCHA) and how to use it to review recent changes in your area using filters.

Community

  • Steve Coast launched a Kickstarter campaign to fix and stabilize OSM Stats and already reached his goal of 1000 USD. However, it also received some criticism.
  • Mapbox Cities is a mentorship program for cities. For research projects on public sector open datasets and OpenStreetMap, Mapbox wants to learn about the local government datasets that are most interesting for you to import, the pain points that you face while interacting with government open data stakeholders, and more on your experience with local government contacts. If you are interested in answering these questions, please take up the survey for OpenStreetMap Contributors and there is one for local government officials too.
  • Mikel Maron publishes his notes on the Local Chapter Congress that took place during SotM 2016.
  • Joost Schouppe publishes his analysis of the most frequently used OpenStreetMap editors.

  • A new Missing Maps Hosting Tool helps mapathon organizers register the event and contact other volunteers.
  • The HOT Mapathons in Belgium were not as successful as hoped, judging by the statistics on continued participation. However, Joost Schouppe writes that they were more successful in other aspects – they have united the community and recruited volunteers while organizing SotM (2016) last autumn.

Maps

  • OpenStreetMap Carto released version 3.2.0, and landuse=farm will no longer be displayed.
  • Michael Spreng presents the Swiss map of CHFreeWiFi which is based on OSM. The WeeklyOSM editors do not issue any political opinion.

  • A discussion about how to map a mill channel/trench started both in the German forum (de) (automatic translation) and the Tagging mailing list at about the same time. waterway=leat is called the water providing alternative for the existing tags waterway=ditch, drain and canalis proposed. The German forum prefers waterway=ditch, so far.
  • surface=cobblestone was discussed on the German forum (de) (automatic translation), after wiki fiddling changed the original intent of the tag over the years. Do we all have to start retagging what we know colloquially as cobblestone to surface=sett? Or do we make the definitions in the wiki the way they started out?
  • Élisée Reclus (@reclus23) tweets that "In #Ruhrgebiet the cycle path signposts in #OpenStreetMap soon have (de) (automatic translation) to be changed / supplemented". He also points out that new signposts might also be rescue points tagged highway=emergency_access_point or emergency=access_point.

Community

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • On the recent OSMF Board meeting on 18th April a possible directive was discussed on how to deal with commercially organized edits in a largely non-public item of the agenda. This led to a turmoil prior to the meeting. A theme in the public part was also a possible change of the e-mail provider for osmfoundation.org (Gmail) to a self hosted solution.
  • "OSMUK Chapter has opened a dialogue at senior level with Highways England about access to their data and they have indicated they are open to releasing data to us", says Brian Prangle at Talk-GB. He lists a number of features to add to the initial request of data. Your comments are welcome.

About us

  • The weeklyOSM team is looking for new members to join the team. weeklyOSM publishes 52 issues per year currently in eight languages, regardless of holidays or public holidays. To do this we need to get reinforcements. As a part of weeklyOSM, you can work on: collecting and evaluate links belonging to OSM, writing articles, translating and proofreading, editing images, etc. Please drop an email to ( blog at openstreetmap dot de ) with your OSM account.

Mapping

  • DigitalGlobe and Mapboxshared two new global satellite imagery layers for live tracing on OpenStreetMap. Now, mappers will have even more sources of high quality, recent imagery layers to trace, identify, and validate roads, places, and buildings to continue to expand this free and open database of the Earth’s features. In JOSM, you have to activate it explicitly under BackgroundBackground Settings. For more information read DigitalGlobe’s employee Kevin Bullock’s diary entry, the discussions in the German forum and the mailing lists: Talk-en and Talk. The License Terms are available in the OSM Wiki.
  • There is an interesting discussion in the OpenStreetMap forum about tips, tools and apps that can be used for videomapping while biking.

Community

  • Roland Olbricht highlighted three suggestions for improving data protection, which were discussed at the FOSSGIS conference in Passau. There were related discussions in the German forum (automatic translation) and on the mailing list Talk-de (automatic translation) and later on the mailing list talk.
  • Yuri Astrakhan writes about the SPARQL (rdf) database with both OSM and Wikidata being ready for testing. It allows massive cross-referenced queries between two datasets. This service is a test, and needs a permanent home to stay alive.Oleksiy Muzalyev points to his Web app, in which one click on the map shows the associated Wikipedia articles.
  • Jinalfoflia shares her experience of being a part of the mapping party hosted by the Ottawa OpenStreetMap community.

Imports

Humanitarian OSM

  • The Guardian reported on an Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Pete Masters and Claire Halleux have published the tasks. Nicolas Chavent summarized the priorities on two wiki pages in English and in French.

Maps

switch2OSM

  • At Rotterdam Central Station, OpenStreetMap is shown on a big screen where people can explore the city by dragging and tapping the screen. It is the only interactive map in the station, so it has been consciously chosen.
  • The French National Institute for preventive archaeological research provides a visualization tool based on OSM for its archaeological sites.

  • Dieterdreist wrote a proposal on aeroway=spaceport. The voting is open until May 30th.
  • Yo paseopor calls to use the traffic sign recognition of Mapillary in OSM as nodes to capture traffic signs.
  • On the tagging mailing list, Dave F wonders about the existence of toilets:wheelchair and wheelchair_toilet in the iD editor. After some discussion, he gets the information that a pre-selection for free texts information comes from Taginfo and thus can contain typos.

Community

  • User Hakuch published WikiRever, a tool that looks up who inserted or deleted a specific phrase from an OpenStreetMap Wiki page. He claims that it is easier to use than Wikiblame. (automatic translation)
  • The American Red Cross announces a job as “American Red Cross GIS Analyst” in Bogota, Colombia.

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • Rebecca Firth searches on the HOT mailing list for experienced mappers to validate tasks in the District of Salima, Malawi.
  • C J Hendrix of the Centre for Humanitarian Data reported on the new automatic OSM exports for the HDX (Humanitarian Data Exchange), which were created in cooperation with HOT.

Maps

  • Are you searching for geolocations of Wikipedia articles on the OSM map? Alex-7 created a web app.
  • Black is beautiful: A bug in the latest carto style caused waterways with intermittent=yes to be rendered in black instead of dashed blue. The issue has been solved.

switch2OSM

  • Via Staziun is a project of the SBB and the Foundation My Handicap with the aim “to facilitate orientation at train stations: with current photos and information from all Swiss railway stations, collected and shared by other travellers”. The pictures are available in Mapillary but all other information is not available under a free and open license.

Open Data

  • [1] Michal Migurski presents the OpenAdresses project on the Mapbox blog and garnishes it with some nice statistics.

Software

Programming

  • The Mapbox Mobile SDK can be enhanced by plugins.
  • Christoph Lingg asked whether there is an easier-to-use OSM data format other than PBF. He would prefer the data in GeoJSON. Jochen Topf explained in detail where the problems are and suggested his export-branch of osmium which can export to GeoJSON.

New Walkthrough in ID

An example of the revised walkthrough in iD 1 | © Mapbox, OpenStreetMap contributors CC-BY

Mapping

  • Bryan posted a blog entry, A friendlier introduction to editing OpenStreetMap, which emphasizes on improving the iD editor walkthrough, a tutorial that guides new users through some basic editing tasks and teaches them the skills and confidence to improve OpenStreetMap.
  • GeoMappando wrote (it) (automatic translation) a great introduction to OSM, that includes data quality, licensing, database layout and the tagging system. This post is the beginning of a series: stay tuned for the second post about database exports and file formats.
  • The proposal to extend the ‘aeroway’ tagging with spaceport infrastructure has been accepted with 15 to 3 votes.
  • The tagging list discusses an appropriate tagging of restrictions for vehicles fueled by liquefied or compressed gas. This applies to underground parking facilities as well as the Chunnel, for instance.
  • This thread on the tagging mailing list reviews tags for truck parking.

Community

  • Ouizi notes (fr) that OpenStreetMap is more detailed than any other map provider.
  • User piligab from Peru, published an OSM diary, “My first year at Mapbox working with OpenStreetMap”. She talks about her experience working in Mapbox and how to make OSM the best map of the world. By the way, she regularly contributes to the Spanish version of weeklyOSM as well. 😉
  • Chris Hill noticed new notes around Hull created by Street Complete. He installed the app and expressed dismay that it: added unnecessary information, such as surface=asphalt; and does not inform the user that they are adding them to OSM.
  • Various events took place for the students throughout Avignon as a part of the Education OSM program for this year’s SotM-FR. More information here.
  • The first #Geobeers get together of the Paraguayan OSM community took place in Asunción to discuss new projects.

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • After a failure of the current hard disks, the company Metanet donated 8 SAS disks to the Swiss OpenStreetMap association. This ensures the operation of the server for the next 1 to 2 years. A big thank you to Metanet!
  • Simon Poole released the first draft of the geocoding guidelines. Feedback can be given until the end of June.

Events

  • This year’s AGIT, the “largest yearly conference and fair about geoinformation” will take place (automatic translation) from July 5th to 7th in Salzburg (automatic translation). OSM will be featured.
  • Some nice items from the SotMFR 2017 in Avignon:
  • State of the Map US 2017 will be held in Boulder, Colorado, this year over the weekend of October 19th-22nd. Check out their website for more information.

Humanitarian OSM

  • David Luswata of HOT US reports about LEGIT team completing the field mapping in Zwedru City.
  • The Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery (GFDRR) is currently seeking a Short Term Consultant (8 month) who will work in Kampala, Uganda. Attention deadline: June 9th, 2017.
  • Melanie Eckle published the meeting minutes of the HOT board meeting that happened on 1st of June 2017.
  • The Open Data for Resilience Initiative (OpenDRI) is hiring a full-time consultant for their office in Washington D.C.

Maps

  • uMap prepared custom Avignon maps in occasion of SoTM-France.

Programming

  • The development (coding) phase of Google Summer of Code (GSoC) started on May 30th. OSM has five accepted projects. In addition students from OSGeo, KDE and Green Navigation will work on applications using OSM data.
  • Andy Allan describes his work on “Factory Refactoring”, a significant change in OSM website codebase that makes the test suite more reliable.
  • OSM data are now available on Amazon Web Services (AWS), as snapshots, historical archives and changesets.
  • Anita Graser reports about a prototype for pedestrian navigation using OSM data. Novel features include: routing through areas, and navigation by landmark (“turn left at the school”).

Other “geo” things

  • A recent post on the Reddit, Data is Beautiful which went viral, shows community animating the transformation of subway maps of 15 cities to actual geography.
  • Wired publishes an article about air quality mapping at hyper-local scale and transboundary impact of global air pollution.
  • Mapbox developer Antonio Zugaldia worked on a connection for Amazon Alexa for navigation and traffic information.
  • Apple plans to improve (automatic translation) their maps by trained crowdworkers. A comment on Heise wonders why Apple wouldn’t use the much better OSM data instead, supporting the OSM community in return, which could mean a win-win deal.
  • The European Space Agency (ESA) announced the release of information, satellite imagery and associated geodata under the CC BY-SA 3.0 IGO licence, as well as an unprecedented prize for Copernicus Masters, the largest international competition in the commercial use of Earth observation data.
  • Last Thursday Japan sent the second of four satellites of their Quasi-Zenith Satellite System into space. They will send GPS compatible signals and augmentation values. Because of their elliptical, geosynchronous orbits the satellites will stay for a long time in the zenith over Japan and will provide highly accurate positioning around 10 centimeters.

Mapping

  • François Lacombe published a presentation on the topic, “Mapping of energy distribution networks”. (fr)
  • User Jothirnadh explains how to edit a road segment while preserving route relations. His diary entry provides plenty of details and clear screenshots for each step.
  • Michał Brzozowski posts some statistics about MAPS.ME edits. He remarks how power users fix many editing mistakes, but devote too much time and resources that could be otherwise applied on OSM improvements. Roland Obricht expresses appreciation for MAPS.ME edits.
  • Yuri Astrakhan aka nyurik released a video on the topic “OSM+Wikidata”. More information on the wiki.
  • Tijmen Stam suggests to introduce a tag man_made=tunnel equivalent to the widely-used man_made=bridge. Responses are positive and include suggested use-cases.
  • In Talk-ES user dcapillae mentions (automatic translation) a conflict happening in Galicia, North-West of Spain when someone decided to “close” a note. This practice is discouraged by many.

  • GOwin compares OSM and Google Maps “glitches” in four areas of the world. He identifies OSM’s strength in community involvement versus centralised map management and cites Kibera project as a great example of map maintenance done by local people.
  • PlacesForBikes used OSM data to compare bike networks in 299 cities across the U.S. The analysis aims to identify whether bikers can travel on low-stress segments of the bike network, and unveiled interesting findings.
  • Members of the Russian community (ru) (automatic translation) travelled to Tula in order to map together.
  • People for Bikes’, “Bike Network Analysis” gave Chicago a low score, but this is strongly related to the model and assumptions underlying the analysis itself. Both the data and the analysis are open: geodata comes from OSM and U.S. Census, while the analysis’ source code is available online.
  • Edward Betts presents a tool to add Wikidata tags to OSM elements, and provides a summary of its functionality and usage.
  • Bryan Housel is looking for translators for the iD editor.

Events

Text

pole_climber’s Colour Coded OSM Notes – displayed based on last edit date 1 | © pole_climber, uMap and map data © OpenStreetMap contributors ODbL

Mapping

  • User Chetan_Gowda writes a diary about Microsoft’s release of 9.8 million building footprint data of 102 cities, covering 44 US states, to the OpenStreetMap community. He finds the general quality of data being good and encourages the local communities to evaluate the quality for import. He is asked in the comment section why he considers the data to be of good quality.
  • Christoph Hormann explains how to accurately map coastlines and tidal zones in OSM, thanks to recent and detailed aerial imagery.
  • Jochen Topf announces another forthcoming multipolygon challenge, concerning “old-style” multipolygons with the same tags on both the relation and the outer way. As these are rendered differently with the 4.0 release of OSM Carto, they may be now noticeable.
  • Volker Schmidt asks how to map a “Verkehrsübungsplatz” – “Traffic training area”. Here is an example.
  • Joachim suggests to map places also as areas. The idea is to introduce a new tag boundary=place and, if necessary, to use boundary relations.
  • Malte Heynen proposes to tag foot and cycleways next to highways with their street classification. Routing engines could then prefer ways far away from the traffic. According to the proposal you would change cycleway=sidepath to cycleway=sidepath:primary.
  • Even though the proposal “Language information for name” by Lukas Sommer was accepted by 57% (26 votes), he will rewrite it, “to explain better, more detailed, what missing language information means for Unicode text strings, and how an example use case could look like.“
  • São Jorge Island in the Azores disappeared, reports Topo Lusitania on June 9th on the Portuguese mailing list. Obviously, the issue is still not resolved until the drafting of this edition of weeklyOSM.
  • User Polyglot wants to start doing regular Hangouts on Air about mapping of public transport using JOSM and the PT_Assistant plugin.
  • User marthaleena explains how she is mapping her hometown Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh, India).
  • Pascal Neis published a blog post as a summary of his German talk (slides and video) (de) at the FOSSGIS & OpenStreetMap conference 2017 with the title “Detecting vandalism in OpenStreetMap”.

Community

  • Antoine Riche setup a map of regular OSM meetings in France: these are usually held monthly.
  • Ilya Zverev announced the “Call for Nominees” for the OpenStreetMap Awards 2017. There are some changes compared to last year’s process.
  • As part of its twinning with the rural commune of Dianguirdé in the north-west of Mali, the town of Ivry-sur-Seine mapped the village and its surroundings with the support of CartONG.
  • A user published in the German OSM Forum, parts of the letter, “German Association of Energy and Water Management e.V.”. Hydrants in the OpenFireMap (i.e. in OpenStreetMap) were a thorn in the side of the association. It is feared the security of critical infrastructure. The association disapproved of the letter’s publication. Readers may recall similar issues in the United Kingdom.
  • Simon Poole sent a reminder that an OpenStreetMap organisation entity exists on Transifex where you can now move easily your project for more visibility to volunteer translators.

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • OSMF published the minutes of the Engineering Working Group’s meeting on May 30th.
  • Martijn van Exel informs the Talk-FR mailing list that the French OpenStreetMap association has made an application for local chapter status with OSMF. He asks the community to share any questions, comments or concerns.

Events

  • Sev_osm reports on Twitter about two workshops on using free tools for mapping and geoscience (OSM, QGIS, geOrchestra), taking place from June 12th to 24th in Niamey, Niger. This initiative is supported by “Les Libres Géographes (LLG)“, Projet EOF and OSM communities from Niger, Benin, Burkina Faso and Togo.
  • On June 15th, the Mapbox team in Peru conducted an OpenStreetMap workshop for 4th and 5th grade students at the Mariscal Caceres School in Ayacucho, Peru. Students were amazed to see how easily different geographic data can be added in OpenStreetMap.
  • OSM Peru participated in the “Conference on the reconstruction of peasant cooperatives” (after the devastating floods of the past few months) on June 6th in Lima, Peru.

Humanitarian OSM

  • The Drucker Institute at Claremont Graduate University has named the 50 semifinalists for the 2017 Drucker Prize, and HOT is one of them. The winner of the $100,000 Drucker Prize will be announced on September 29th.
  • HOT Indonesia hosts a mapathon with students from the University of Indonesia’s (UI) Department of Geography.
  • Fatima Alher tweets about a mapathon that took place on June 17th in Niamey (see “Events”). It was aimed, through this task, at mapping the surroundings of Diffa, Niger, an area affected by the Boko Haram abuses. See this announce on the HOT mailing list for details.
  • HOT has partnered with the Global Earthquake Model (GEM) and ImageCat on a Challenge Fund focused on developing a global exposure database for multi-hazard risk analysis. The Challenge Fund, formed by the Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery (GFDRR) and the UK’s Department for International Development (DFID) is aimed at building local and global resilience through innovation in order to better identify risk and enable more effective decision-making.

Maps

  • A major new release, 4.0, of CartoCSS is in the process of being rolled out on the OSMF servers. There is no official announcement yet, but many hints in the mailing lists, here and here. One of the big steps forward in increasing the flexibility of the style is the incorporation of LUA pre-processing.
  • HeiGIT @ GIScience Heidelberg released a dedicated stable disaster version of OpenRouteService (ORS) to support humanitarian logistics for Africa, South America and Indonesia with data from OSM.
  • Lokaler Editor, a browser-based tool for creating maps for print on the web, is now in beta stage. It helps journalists to create maps with their own design and enables them to add their own notes. The service offering is a freemium model with among others SVG export, and should start in autumn. The source code will be opened in 2018. User Spanholz named other possibilities for this tool: “I shared it also with my local police forces. They can now easily create maps for festivals or emergency situations, which can accurately show the area while highlighting more necessary informations.” There is a tutorial video as well.
  • [1] pole_climber published a very detailed blog post on how to create a colour coded map about OSM notes, displayed based on last edit date.

Licences

  • Milan municipality imported a few drinking fountains’ locations from OSM, therefore prompting (it) (automatic translation) a detailed licensing discussion on the talk-it mailing list.

Software

  • Jean-Maxime Fillau recently contributed to the OSRM project by adding an option to compute a route that ensures the vehicle arrives on the correct side of the road for the destination. This is particularly useful for large vehicles such as delivery trucks and fire engines.

Programming

  • Graphhopper is looking for freelancers or companies interested in implementing customizations of the GraphHopper routing engine, jsprit or integrating the GraphHopper Directions API in an application or process.

Validator map for sharp turns onto ramps 1 | © Mapbox © OpenStreetMap contributors ODbL

Erratum

  • In weeklyOSM #361 we said that the proposal “Language information for name” was approved. That was wrong. As chris66 pointed out in the German forum: “A rule of thumb for ‘enough support’ is 8 unanimous approval votes or at least 10 votes with more than 74 % approval, but other factors may also be considered (such as whether a feature is already in use).”

Mapping

  • Google got good publicity from Radio-Canada (fr) / CBC (en) for mapping boundaries of the First Nations and Inuits (native Americans) territories. Pierre Béland suggests on Talk-ca that there is an equal opportunity for publicity for OSM by highlighting the quality of OSM in the same places.
  • Telenav invites the Ecuador community to discuss adding street names and turn restrictions. They estimate that only 35% of streets or roads which have been mapped are named in this country.
  • Marcos Oliveira informed the Portuguese mailing list that Bing published new aerial images in Portugal. Several people acknowledged this update. Happy mapping.
  • On the “talk” mailing list, a contributor asked how they could follow other mappers’ edits to things of interest to them. Other than whodidit (which can also provide RSS feeds), other monitoring tools such as “Hall Monitor” and osm-qa-feeds were mentioned.
  • Daniel writes about the validator for sharp turns onto ramps and explains about why highway ramps should never be sharp (i.e. < ~90 degrees) and the possibility of finding turn restrictions in this location.
  • User Paul the Archivist has mapped the town centre of Alton, Hampshire in great detail including simple3D tags. This F4map demo 3D Map shows buildings, trees, lamps, cranes, etc… This is just one of many town centres in South-East England which Paul has mapped in recent years.
  • Simon Poole tweets about his work on a usable opening hours editor. It will be featured in the next version of Vespucci.

Community

  • Alexander Zipf announced the new Labs.OpenRouteService.org where you can test and comment on new upcoming features of OpenRouteService. It is also demonstrating some more experimental research results. The list starts with Open Space routing through squares for pedestrians and the new POI location API Places. The labs demonstrator is only using OSM data for Germany at the outset.
  • The OSM Belgium community’s “Mapper of the Month” is Julien Minet aka juminet. More about him on his site.
  • Italian mappers discuss (it) relations, tags and trail maintenance for the Sentiero Italia, a long-distance path initiated in the 1980s. As guideposts and official sources don’t always coincide, OSM mapping could be the incentive to revive this picturesque route.

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • On June 20th a public OSMF Board meeting took place on the HOT Mumble server. Topics included: the applications by France and the United Kingdom associations to be recognised as regional chapters; a policy for organized arrangements; and the relationship between the OSMF and HOT.

  • Applications for travel grants to FOSS4G 2017 in Boston (August 14 – 19) are open until July 7th.
  • The 2017 edition of FOSS4G-Europe will take place in Paris – Marne-la-Vallée, from the 18th to the 22nd of July.
  • The videos from SotMFR 2017 are online.
  • FOSS4G-Africa is taking place in Johannesburg, South Africa, with a strong focus on geography education. The event is organised by OSGeo Africa and the South African QGIS User Group, together with SAGTA (Southern African Geography Teachers’ Association) and GeoforAll.
  • Registration for the HOT Summit on September 14-15, in Ottawa, Canada, is now open.
  • The 2017 Elbe-Labe meeting in Saxony, SE Germany is a gathering for mappers. It takes place from September 1st to 3rd. The location is a little bit outside Dresden. Participants are expected from the local area and the Czech Republic. If you want to participate, please register by entering the details into the table in the OSM wiki. (de) (en)
  • The program of SotM 2017, Japan, in Aizuwakamatsu City Culture Center is online.

Humanitarian OSM

  • On the talk mailing list, Michał Brzozowski complained about some low quality changesets by new users in Nepal. The thread touches many topics: best practices for new mappers, communication improvements, local knowledge, partner organisations to exchange with the local community, languages and respect.
  • Russel Deffner opens three mapping projects (1, 2 and 3), the first HOT tasks concerning the elimination of malaria in Cambodia.

Maps

  • Henry Lau downloaded a list of bakeries from OpenStreetMap using Overpass Turbo, and used d3-hexbin plugin together with leaflet to map the density of bakeries in two capital cities – London and Paris. This is part of his larger project about baking or cooking 80 different recipes involving dough or wheat from the top 80 wheat consuming countries.
  • Rosenblatt has created a meticulous work, an interactive map of prehistoric sites where human DNA was secured. Each individual site on the map contains classification information and links to the relevant publications. The Spanish newspaper “La voz de Galicia” reported in a popular scientific way on it.
  • moovellab, the home of “Roads to Rome”, launched a new project: “What the Street!?” (desktop browser only), a dataviz project to interactively explore mobility space in cities around the world. What the Street!? illustrates how daily transportation choices shape cityscapes in a playful way. The project analyzed OpenStreetMap data from 23 cities around the world, including London, Barcelona and Tokyo to create unique, comparative data visualizations of parking and movement spaces in each city.
  • Maki recently updated Bugianen, a map (it) of Piedmont for hikers and mountain biking that merges OSM to the official regional cartography. The improvements are visible on zoom levels 11 to 15, now much more detailed, and in the inclusion of neighbouring areas’ open datasets.

switch2OSM

  • Snapchat now offers SnapMap powered by Mapbox, OpenStreetMap and DigitalGlobe. A video.

Open Data

  • The reuse of Open Data in Italy, PA-Webinar Events: June 27, 12:00. Slides are available here.
  • Connected Signals, a traffic analytics firm, offers its database of traffic signals, stop lines and other features to OpenStreetMap. The data, presumably for the Continental USA, are acquired through machine-learning from sensor data, including video.

Software

  • Nils Nolde developed a new QGIS plugin for OSM routing and accessibility analysis using OpenRouteService.
  • Walkalytics from EPB (an engineering company, based in Switzerland) calculates which amenities can be reached within 2, 5, 10 minutes from a given point or a set of points (i.e. Isochrone maps). They use both OSM data and other sources.

Releases

Version 3.0.0 of Nominatim is now out. The result is a much smaller database and improved query response times. The most important feature is undoubtedly the on-the-fly address interpolation, as it makes sense to address blocks of houses that are particularly popular in North and South America. Sarah Hoffmann, aka lonvia told us, that Nominatim has now officially moved to openstreetmap.org on GitHub and nominatim.org is currently being expanded into the official homepage.

Mapping

  • Mapping public bus transport seems to be the theme of community projects this summer. The French community have announced their project of the month (similar to the UK’s Quarterly Project and Germany’s Wochenaufgaben) for July 2017: Bus Stops. The results are published on the OSM wiki. At the end of the month (July 29th and 30th), OpenStreetMap US is running a summer bus Mapathon, with the objective of field survey of bus stops and bus routes on those two days.
  • OSM Inspector has been updated. This affects the “Geometry”, “Tagging”, “Places” and “Highways” views.
  • Nuno Caldeira explains that the rendering problem on São Jorge island in Azores is solved. He also asks for comments about further clean-up options. At the moment of writing some old “flooded” tiles still appear at some higher zoom levels, but that will get fixed as new tiles are rendered.
  • Clifford Snow initiates a discussion on Talk-us mailing list about a recent case of data being added to OSM for SEO in the US. A company created one account per POI and added the tags of the POI to an existing street.

Community

  • A mapping team from Aoyama Gakuin University mapped emergency facilities (such as AEDs, fire hydrants, etc) in Yamato city. This data was built to be browsable on MAPS.ME. And their results were reported (ja) (automatic translation) on a local newspaper. However, on the Japanese mailing list, their tagging manner (name=AED and tourism=information were added on emergency=defibrillator) was criticized (ja) (automatic translation) to be “tagging for the renderer”. After a discussion, problematic tags were removed. His justification on that tagging is explained at a changeset discussion.
  • Mapbox writes about the StatCan initiative in collaborating with OSM-Canada to map buildings of Ottawa in OpenStreetMap. MapBox indicates that it support this project.
  • Jennings Anderson wrote about the procedure of creating his “User per Country” statistics maps.
  • OSM Colombia trained 25 local farmers in the region of Anitoquia on how to map with JOSM in cooperation with a “Right to land and territory” group and the PASOColombia Organization. This included people from Nechí, Tarazá, Caucasia, Valdívia, El Bagre and Zaragosa.
  • OSM blog posted a bunch of “Featured Images of the Week” along with the histories behind each of them. Check the wiki to learn how to propose your image of the week!
  • Spanholz has posted a list of OpenStreetMap projects in the reddit linux forum.
  • Wambacher’s Online Maps will only be reachable via wambachers.website in the future (de). (automatic translation)
  • Jochen Topf states on Talk-CA that there are still numerous “old style” multi-polygons in Canada (ie. tag in both the relation and the external way), a great number resulting from CanVec imports. There is not an important community in Canada and the threat to erase the data was brought a few discussions about the way to collarate with local communities.

Imports

  • Kyle Nuttall notifies imports mailing list about Ottawa’s official dataset of over 149,000 city-maintained trees. A lengthy discussion about tagging and verification ensues, and a wiki page lists the import’s current state.

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • Peter Barth reports about the last OSMF Board meeting in Amsterdam (May 2017).

Events

  • SotM 2017 tweeted: Last chance! Nominate a person, a group or an organization for an OpenStreetMap 2017 award (deadline Sunday, July 9th).
  • The deadline to propose sessions for SotM Asia (September 23-24, Kathmandu, Nepal) has been extended to July 15, 2017. The same for scholarships.

Humanitarian OSM

  • HOT has launched three formal research experiments on crowdsourced damage assessment. The study aims to better understand which type of data and accuracy is most urgent for post-disaster response, and how to maximise the impact of online volunteers’ contributions.
  • OpenStreetMap Colombia releases (es) the poster “Pre-elimination Malaria in Pacific Coast, Colombia” with the result of the project “Herramientas, formación y redes encaminadas a disminuir la carga por malaria en Colombia”. Best regards to all involved in the #MapatónXGuapi initiative that generated the needed geodata.
  • HOT and Doctors Without Borders (Turkey) organized Turkey’s first Missing Maps mapathon in Istanbul together with volunteers in Kampala to support the many refugees and displaced persons in Uganda in order to better meet their needs.
  • Heather Leson and Guido Pizzini from IFRC organised a Missing Maps workshop for grade 9 students in Ecole Internationale Geneva, and started a discussion about how to involve kids in mapping activities on HOT mailing list.

Maps

  • Cyclestreet.net introduced their bikedata map, visualising critical spots in bicycle infrastructure to support campaigns for improving cycling networks.
  • Hartmut Holzgraefe improved GPX upload in MapOSMatic. Until now it was necessary to manually select the upload area, while this update automatically detects the bounding box from the GPX data. There is more news about the service: the support of the veloroad.ru style, a locate-me button in the slippy map and contour lines for the OpenSnowMap style.
  • Just arrived on the instant messaging app Snapchat, the Snap Map location sharing with friends functionality is already controversial. It allows to share its user’s position in real-time and to very precisely locate your friends around you, or track their movements on the other side of the world. Some voices warn parents against a too precise location of their children.
  • The OpenTopoMap now evaluates (automatic translation) a given direction=* tag on viewpoint rendering.
  • A new webservice Printmaps to create large-format, OSM-based maps in print quality is in beta testing. In addition, the display of your own data and map elements are special features of Printmaps. Klaus aka tok-rox asks for feedback.
  • User tyr_asd just published a new layer for his OSM node density visualization tool, and challenges the readers to find out which city is represented in this screenshot.

switch2OSM

  • Mapzen presents a second technical preview of OSMLR. It “provides a stable linear-referencing system atop the ever-changing network of roadways in OpenStreetMap. It’s used by the Open Traffic platform to associate statistics like speeds and vehicle counts with roadway segments. And it has many more possible uses, beyond just traffic statistics”. A preview build is also announced.
  • Geoboxers’ WorldBloxer generates Minecraft templates of any place on Earth based on OpenStreetMap data. It’s now in beta.

Open Data

  • The city of Amsterdam published over 800,000 360° images on Mapillary. Using an online tool pictures can be filtered for specific objects. Now, all the data has to be mapped! 😉

Software

  • Florian Lainez announces Jungle Bus, a new project for public transport mapping based on OSM Contributor. The app is meant to be very easy to use, in order to facilitate data collection for transport networks mapping.

Programming

  • Mapbox announces its new plugin for calculating isochrones, curves that include the areas you can reach in a given time from a starting point. It is able to quickly compute up to 60 minutes isochrones for pedestrians, cyclists and cars.
  • Thomas Skowron publishes the June summary of his work on “Grandine: Vector Tiles”. The introduction was presented on March. The source code is available on GitHub.

Releases

Mapbox’s latest SDK release for Android and iOS brings in the possibility of 3D map visualisation for mobile devices.

The current release status of software around OSM can be found on the OSM software watchlist.

Did you know …

  • … that Critical Maps (an Android and iPhone App for the Critical Mass) uses OSM as background?

He reports as well on the island of California, trap streets in London and non existing mountains on a map “drawn up in 1798 by the British cartographer James Rennell and copied throughout most of the 19th century”.
  • Metrocosm maps show how so much of the world occupies so little of its land. For countries like Australia, Spain, USA, Canada and for North Africa, we see which size of the country is occupied by 50% of the population. For Canada, this is in South Ontario and Quebec near the USA border. Note that this population occupies less than 150,000 km2, 2% of Canada’s surface.

  • Canada, which has one of the most restrictive drone regulation, just approved a micro drone to his record of Compliant Unmanned Air Systems. This approval could enable better flexibility for flight in restricted areas or past visible line of sight (LoS) and offer more possibilities to surveying and mapping professionals. One example is a drone delivery company who passed successfully the Transport Canada tests for flights beyond visual LoS. This should allow experimental drone deliveries.
  • Spiegel Online published (de) an article about the fastest moving island of the world: Trischen island, which shifts to the east about 30-35 meters per year.
  • OSM Cochabamba reported on Twitter on the way in the “Quebrada del Yuro” and the village of La Higuera, Bolivia, places of the capture and death of Ernesto Che Guevara are now included in OSM as well.

Text

The company Mapcat from Hungary (here its map portal) is a new competitor in the market for map tiles, routing and geocoding. 1 | © OpenStreetMap contributors, ODbL, © MapCat, © Wikipedia

Mapping

  • Bing updated (de) (automatic translation) its imagery for large parts of Germany on the 11 & 12th of July. It is not known (yet) if this only affects Germany. The new imagery is at a lower resolution and its offset should be checked before using it by comparing it with other permitted imagery sources and the available GPS tracks!
  • Argentina’s national mapping agency IGN made some of their aerial imagery available for OSM mapping. Presets are available already in JOSM, but a little more time is needed for the services themselves.
  • The tagging mailing list attempts to pinpoint the meaning of the word “office” (at least for mapping purposes), with the consequence of questioning many other definitions.
  • Steve All reported on the Talk-US mailing list that there are differences between the data of the US Census bureau and the states for administrative boundaries. This also means that some boundaries in OSM have incorrect admin_level tags. Update: please see also Steve’s comment below.
  • John Whelan talks in his blog post about how the recent Stats Canada Building import into OSM came about and how the origins lie in OC Transpo’s efforts to improve accessibility for their partially sighted riders some years ago.
  • Richard Fairhurst explains how you can easily capture the height of bridges using aerial imagery together with photographs from Mapillary, OpenStreetCam and, in the British Isles, Geograph. A video of a notorious low bridge in Durham, NC, emphasises why this is so important for HGV routing. Thanks to Jeff for the correction
  • User Trockennaseaffe is busy mapping (de) ticket validator machines. He encountered OpenStationMap’s proposed tagging vending=ticket_validator, but he was encouraged to use the clearer amenity=ticket_validator instead.
  • Simon Poole publishes OSM statistics for the second quarter of 2017, and includes a new metric of Edits per month.

Community

  • Jinal Foflia writes a Mapbox blog showcasing this year’s State of the Map conferences around the world. This map was made using the GeoJSON that contained the location co-ordinates of all the event venues, the icons from the various SotM and their respective websites. You can refer to this example for doing something similar.
  • All other rendering issues having been resolved, discussion over at OSM-Carto’s GitHub issues turns to whether a submarine is a ship.
  • Sukhjit Singh Sehra et al. published a paper about the analysis of the abstracts of 485 papers about OSM from 2007 to 2016. They used latent semantic analysis to identify research trends regarding OpenStreetMap.

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • Voting for OSM-Awards 2017 in all categories will start on July 16.

Events

  • FOSS4G 2017 HOKKAIDO took place in Sapporo (Hokkaido, Japan) on the 30th of June and 1st of July. The event was a hands-on day and a case presentation day. They were a great success on both. Check the videos and Twitter summary. (ja)
  • User Andrea Musuruane proposes (it) a mapping party in Viverone (Biella, Italy), co-organised with local Linux user groups.
  • OSM Geography Awareness Week, that will take place in many locations around the world in November, is already in action – check the map for an event near you, or propose one yourself!
  • SotM Africa took place in Kampala, Uganda from the 8th to the 10th of July. Several tweets point to a great event with great success. We’ll report published blogs or recordings of the lectures as soon as they become available.
  • Wikimedia Italia has organised (it) a two-day event in Spoleto (Umbria, Italy) on the 21st and 22nd of July dedicated to OSM and open data. The program includes talks about open (geo)data and public administrations, hiking maps, OSM and Wikipedia, and a full day for the mapping party.
  • The call for venues for SotM 2018 is closed. Two candidates have applied: Heidelberg and Milan (Milan also applied last year).
  • Do you plan to attend SotM in Japan? This post on the OSM blog provides useful information about visa procedures.

Humanitarian OSM

  • After the two mapathons in Uganda and Istanbul (we reported) was examined to what extent the refugees could be involved in field mapping. The results were presented by HOT US on a UNHCR meeting.

Education

  • Created in 2014, TeachOSM is an online resource to assist educators at all levels to introduce open source mapping using OpenStreetMap in the classroom. You can find mapping assignments, documentation and case studies. Do you have teaching material to share? This page explains how to contribute.

Maps

  • Mapcat is a new OSM- and Wikipedia-based mapping portal from Hungary that is catering to users internationally. The cat-pun-heavy introduction provides information about what they’re doing now and what they plan to do in the future.
  • OpenRouteService comes once again this week with an innovation! A new experimental “Quiet Routing” option is integrated into the LABS.OpenRouteService.org. It can generate routes that avoid noisy areas. This is adding to the “healthy” (stress reducing) routing theme, that has been introduced recently starting with the “prefer green areas” routing option. Both options can now be weighted dynamically. OSM data is also used for modeling the noise levels along the road.
  • Mapzen used the tangram engine to produce a futuristic-looking 3D map. Especially in large cities, the design looks like as it were from a science fiction movie. See New York or Birmingham.

Software

Programming

  • Andy Allan has joined the maintainers’ team for the OSM website. He aims to continue his work on refactoring, streamline issue processing, and communication to end users, including the moderation queue. Welcome Andy!
  • As reported last week, there have been problems caused by SEO spammers, especially in the USA. On Talk-US, Frederik Ramm published the Perl scripts that he used to identify likely candidates (just one edit, heavy use of certain unusual tags).
  • The GIScience Research Group of the University of Heidelberg is looking for a “Software Engineer Geoinformation Technology/OpenStreetMap”. The job is limited until June 2019.

Releases

Version 0.9 of the Graphhopper routing engine was released on May 31. There are a couple of highlights: public transport routing, and a new “hybrid mode” which is intended to support fast routing queries as well as support for turn costs and restrictions. Graphhopper is now also available on osm.org as a car profile, in addition to the existing bicycle & pedestrian profiles.

New releases are listed as usual on the OSM Software Watchlist. Here are some highlights:

    • JOSM 12450 | 02.07.2017 | Among others, better audio mapping support and addition of automatic filter buttons
    • ID 2.3.1 | 11.07.2017 | Changelog on GitHub.
    • OSRM Backend 5.8.1 | 01.07.2017
    • Mapillary Android 3.65 | 03.07.2017
    • Kurviger Free 1.1.3 | 04.07.2017

Did you know …

Other “geo” things

  • Tanja Pfeffer, a student of the Hochschule Karlsruhe, has designed (de) a map that changes projection according to zoom level. Check it here!
  • Mundialis offers a printing service that features satellite images as art compositions.
  • Forbes.at reported on Mapillary and the competition of the company with Google in terms of the self-driving cars.
  • Google Maps have made it easier for users to add missing data to places. This will enable the collection (de) of more information on accessibility in restaurants and shops.
  • The International Cartographic Conference was held last week (2-7 July) in Washington, DC. Papers from thematic streams on Disaster Mapping (Cartography in Early Warning and Crisis Management), Mountain Cartography, Maps and Graphics for Blind and Partially-sighted People may be of particular interest.
  • Philipp Kandal, Senior Vice President of TeleNav mentioned, at ConCarExpo 2017 in Berlin, the work of his company using OSM data to improve navigation for autonomous cars.
  • UNESCO has expanded its World Heritage List to additional natural and cultural heritage sites. One of these new listings, the English Lake District, is controversially suggested to be very damaging. By the way: one can find cultural heritage sites on the Historic Place Map. If they aren’t there yet, it is a good opportunity to map them. 😉
  • Have you ever wondered how the glacial features called roches moutonnées got their name? The Atlantic explains the complicated story.

  • Pander proposed some improvements to the beautified JOSM presets for natural=tree in the tagging mailing list. See also discussion on the related Vespucci github issue..
  • Stuart Reynolds asks on Talk-gb mailing list whether “St” in names should be abbreviated or not.
  • Vivek Bansal, of Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority, wants to set up a US Tasking Manager task for adding sidewalk=* tags across the entire Santa Clara County, California.
  • Mapillary invites participation in a mapathon to improve street-level photo coverage in Medellin. The mapathon runs until August 3rd.

  • Mapmeld reasons and writes about translating OpenStreetMap into Divehi, the local language of the Maldives.

Imports

  • It looks like Robin Paulson has discovered an import of buildings with no documentation (Auckland, NZ).
  • Sam Libby works on a new feature for the iD editor to ease the import of “authoritative” (his wording) data from ArcGIS REST into OpenStreetMap without the need to use JOSM. Several OSM contributors have already commented on his issue.

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • On July 18, an executive board meeting of the OSMF took place. Various topics were discussed, among others like “Microgrants”, and the corporate editing policy. OSM France was recognized as regional chapter (the contract is in the OSMF wiki). The log was still not online at the time.

  • The first SotM Africa was held between 8th and 10th July, you can read reports by Map Zambia and Janet Chapman sharing their experience at the conference.

Humanitarian OSM

  • An invitation on the Talk mailing list to a Community Webinar about the improvement of mapping residential areas initiates some criticism about the way that landuse=residential is used in some HOT mapping projects. Christoph Hormann explains why from his point of view you cannot use the same assumptions as used in Europe in regions where most people work in the primary sector (agriculture).

Maps

  • Wondering how to get an OSM-based map onto a Garmin device without external storage? This diary entry by robbieonsea contains detailed instructions.
  • OpenMapTiles developed a map which shows the names of places in different languages.
  • Mapbox presents “Whaam!” a map style inspired by the pop art movement, in particular, the work of Andy Warhol, James Rosenquist and Roy Lichtenstein. True eye candy!

Open Data

  • Dmitrij Kožuch is planning an open landuse map for Africa based on available data sources. The main source probably will be OSM.
  • The Guardian and GiGL have worked together to produce an open data set (currently only available through GiGL’s dropbox) of privately-owned public spaces (squares, plazas, parks etc) for Greater London.

Software

  • The Overpass API instance of FOSSGIS e.V. (overpass-api.de) had problems following a power outage. Metadata queries (out meta;) did not work. The problem is now fixed.

Programming

About us

  • We are always looking for people to help us improve our newsletter in anyway they can. Please join our team 😉

Mapping

  • Pascal Neis tweets about a large number of new buildings around Surabaya, Indonesia, without any kind of highways or paths leading to them. On the discussion, other people point other places with the same issue and Pierre Béland discovers that the changeset comment and source are wrong.
  • John Whelan asks if recent changes of the Highway Tag Africa wiki page can be highlighted. The revisions were agreed during a workshop at SotM-Africa. Discussion follows about the modifications made vs the goal of this wiki page for the highway tag to take account of the socio-economic role while other keys take care of the condition and practicability of the road.
  • Christoph Hormann starts a discussion about the decline in accuracy of capture date metadata in Bing imagery, remarking that a range like 2003-2016 seen in a rural area is pretty useless for the purpose of mapping.
  • François Lacombe asks on the Tagging mailing list for comments on his proposal to add extra details about power transformers devices functionalities and specifications under the transformer=* tag.
  • Tobias Zwick wants to add a quest to his StreetComplete app to specify the produce of orchards. Currently three tags are used so he asks for comments on how to implement the tagging scheme.
  • Christoph Hormann blogs about the problems of mapping without recent on-the-ground knowledge, otherwise known as remote or arm chair mapping. The different dimensions of image quality are discussed and exemplified by its age the main culprit.
  • Polyglot wonders why so many details are repeated across OSM objects when mapping public transport and why we need 2 objects for each stop in every route relation, given that this makes maintenance harder. Several people reply with comments.

Community

  • Pascal Neis tweets how the different levels of the OSM activity are attributed on his HDYC tool (How Did You Contribute to OSM?)
  • Mutual Learning: In their July issue of the monthly "showcase", the Wikimedia Foundation’s Research Team discussed OSM data structure and further cooperation models. The live stream has been published on YouTube.
  • In the German forum there is a wide-ranging discussion of "what OSM mappers map and why" has changed in the last 9 years (automatic translation). Two participants of the discussions claim that the thread is collection of people whose ideas did not gain wide enough acceptance by the community.
  • Voting for the 2017 OSM Awards has started, and will end on August 16th. There are 45 nominees in 9 categories to choose from.
  • User GoWin blogged about his visit to the General Santos City firefighters and the impromptu mapping activity he had with them completing the layout of their fire hydrant network.

Events

Humanitarian OSM

  • Marco asks on the HOT mailing list how to map paths and roads through rural villages in Africa to assure routing. The interpretation of the imagery and how to map his example (Mula village, north Nigeria) are discussed in the replies. He also asks about creating virtual highways within residential areas. In the context of semi-desertic areas with no infrastructure and only traces in the sand, there was also discussion with divergent "do not connect" and "do connect" opinions.

Education

  • Christian Quest wrote an easy to understand article about geocoding. (fr) (automatic translation)

Maps

  • [1] OpenStreetBrowser (OSB) is once again online. Now you can easily search for POIs. The website shows a narrow menu on the left side, similar to common Wikis and the main page of OpenStreetMap.org although not static one. 20 languages are available.
  • RandoCarto provides customised hiking maps.
  • shtosm.ru explains (ru) (automatic translation) why users of OpenStreetMap.org from Russia and Belaurus experienced slowly loading map tiles a few days ago. It was caused by scraping the tile cache sponsored by Yandex.

switch2OSM

Licences

  • The OSMF publishes a template waiver/permission for the use of aerial imagery in tracing.

Software

  • Adobe announces that the Flash plugin will be retired in 2020. As the Potlatch online editor is based on Flash, James asks if this is the end of its life too. Potlatch enthusiasts are reassured by Richard Fairhurst that it will continue as a desktop app for Mac/Windows running with Adobe AIR.
  • Bryan Housel mentions in a longer comment that "JOSM-style validation" is coming to the iD editor.

Programming

  • On Medium.com, David Hayter details how a PostgreSQL database might be hacked without user account on the target system if not properly configured.
  • Vladimir Agafonkin of Mapbox blogs about the making of his wind power simulation map using WebGL.

Releases

Did you know …

  • RiscOSM, a renderer for the RISC operating system.
  • Who’s That by Ilya Zverv, that tracks the renaming of OSM users accounts and makes them searchable.

Other “geo” things

  • Anthony Bennett tweets a nice video from 2016 "What if everyone lived in just one city?". With its density ranging from a sparsely populated city to the most crowded place in history, how big would it be?
  • Mystery structure on a South China Sea reef. It’s not visible on OSM but is there someone interested in a survey? 😉
  • The longest pedestrian suspension bridge of the world was opened on July 29th. With a total length of 494 meters, it connects the villages of Zermatt and Grächen in Switzerland.
  • Don’t Panic Labs published a thorough step-by-step tutorial on how to use Mapbox Studio to create a heatmap of your workout activities.

OSMLatam’s and GeoChicas’ mapathon for OSM’s 13th Anniversary 1

About us

  • We are always looking for people to help us improve our newsletter so it can get out faster, have more depth and coverage, and generally improve it for our readers, like you. Please join our team by contacting us now, its fun! 😉

Mapping

  • Pascal Neis tweeted a graph showing “Average OpenStreetMap activities per hour”. It shows a world of “lunchtime mappers” – the drop between 6 & 7am CET is an artifact of data processing, but peaks corresponding to (roughly) CET, GMT, Eastern and Pacific time zones can be seen.
  • Lukas Sommer improved his Language Information proposal which he argues should improve map rendering.
  • Thomas Bertels asked the Tagging mailing list how brasseries should be tagged. Discussion ensued.
  • François Lacombe cleaned-up the proposal for Fire Hydrant Extensions and other improvements follow.
  • Daniel Koć wants to improve the rendering of rivers but finds their classification lacking. Discussion in the Tagging mailing list.
  • On the Tagging mailing list, several people discussed how a shop selling solar equipment might be tagged.
  • User ChristianA wrote a blog post about his visit to the ruins of Schloss Dwasidien (de) on Rügen island, Germany.
  • Skinfaxi asked in the German OSM Forum as a representative of the Swedish community about what tagging is best for natural beaches at lakes, as there they just about everywhere in Sweden.
  • Jay May made an appeal to the whole OpenStreetMap community to help the Eastern Latvia (Latgalia), and Western Russia regions in improving the poor detail and accuracy of their maps.
  • Cesare Gerbino introduced his “Street Image Compare” which he created, where you can compare in a single screen Mapillary with Google Streetview.

Community

  • Pascal Neis shows in a bar chart, which groups of users on OSM are most commonly represented (number of users). Find your own classification on hdyc.neis-one.org.
  • Rodrigo Mariano prompts the Historic and Imports the mailing lists on the “Possibility to build a new Historic Project to OSM” hoping for integration into the Pauliceia’s project. Replies on Historic.
  • The DWG unfortunately had to remove over 10,000 place and street names in Switzerland from OSM because they were copied from the noncompatible GWR database. The French-speaking area of the country was particularly hard hit.
  • “Living, Breathing Maps” is an interview with Dale Kunce the GIS Team Lead for the American Red Cross about Humanitarian mapping and OpenStreetMap in general.
  • MikeN summarises his experience using MapRoulette to add missing railway=level_crossing tags in the United States. After 10 long months, the task is finally complete.

Imports

  • Jonah Adkins makes the first steps to import 19,000 buildings in Dare County, North Carolina. GitHub and wiki pages are available for comment.

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • OSM Foundation’s Operations Working Group (OWG) issued a statement: “We unanimously agreed new membership policies for the Operations Working Group and the Sysadmins. We hope that these will help anyone who wants to volunteer by making the joining process, and the expected activities, more clear.”

Events

  • State Of The Map 2017 is set to take place starting Friday the 18th August (soon!) in Aizu-Wakamatsu, Japan.
  • Planning to be at the State of the Map happening in Japan? Don’t forget to add your details on the attendees’ page and connect with other attendees.
  • Crowd2Map wants to celebrate OSM’s 13th birthday on August 13th and 14th with the largest mapathon ever. They expect over 1500 people within 24 hours to map rural regions of Tanzania. The organizers have created tasks in the OSM tasking Manager and Janet Chapman wrote a detailed guide for the mapathon.
  • The Swiss OSM Association will hold a workshop at DINAcon. “We will show how to use OpenStreetMap to create a location map and how to tell stories with a map.”
  • FOSS4G Boston 2017 is coming up next week, from Monday, August 14th, to Saturday, August 19th. Check the program.
  • [1] To mark the 13th Anniversary of OpenStreetMap, in August 2017, OSMLatam together with GeoChicas are organizing a massive mapathon with national communities of the region. The objective is to map informal settlements.

Humanitarian OSM

  • From August 1st-4th, representatives of HOT Indonesia attended an expert meeting at Udon Thani to combat poverty in rural areas of Thailand. Special appreciation was given to the improved possibilities of building the infrastructure using OSM, responding to catastrophes, and working together with HOT groups, such as young people or other organizations.

Maps

  • The International Space Station has always at least one astronaut or cosmonaut on board who has an amateur radio licence. They operate the ISS amateur radio station ARISS. The Italian amateur radio operator and OSMer Fabrizio Carrai created a map which is linked to the Vita mission page of the planned contacts between ISS and schools in Italy, England, USA, South Africa and the Boy Scout camp in Großzerlang, Germany.

Open Data

  • The slides of the recent FOSS4G Europe in Paris are now online.

Licences

  • Following on from this OSMF blog post about the lack of compatibility between CC-BY 4.0 and ODBL, www.europeandataportal.eu has added some confusion by listing ODBL 1.0 as a licence compatible with CC-BY 4.0. This was raised on the “talk” mailing list, with Simon Poole from the Licensing Working Group replying there.
  • Simon Poole on behalf of “the LWG would like to start a period of public review and consultation on our draft trademark policy”. A lenghty discussion follows.

GraphHopper’s new flexible routing is at least 15 times faster 1 | © OpenStreetMap contributors, ODbL, © GraphHopper, © Omniscale

About us

  • We are always looking for people to help us improve our newsletter so it can get out faster, have more depth and coverage, and generally improve it for our readers, like you. Please join our team by contacting us now, its fun! 😉

Mapping

  • Christoph Hormann blogged about social engineering in OpenStreetMap and how it might be used to influence the course of the project. Mapping for the rendered is also analysed.
  • Daniel Koć wrote a proposal for waterways classification following last week’s river rendering debate and requests comments. Mark Wagner seems to think this is not the way to go in OpenStreetMap.
  • Miguel Sevilla Callejo (msevilla00) from Zaragoza, Spain, is currently in Wales. He noticed an inconsistent use of English and Welsh in OpenStreetMap. His email resulted in a readable, long-lasting and controversial discussion on the Talk-GB mailing list (threads in July and August) and comments in an OSM changeset. Nearly the same problem in Switzerland – read the following article. 😉
  • An official of the Swiss Park Network has requested, via Michael Spreng, that the area be displayed as “Schweizerischer Nationalpark” (German) rather than “Parc Naziunal Svizzer” (Romansch) on OSM. The rationale is that the park is better known by the former name. The ensuing discussion touches on several issues about names in bilingual areas.
  • Marc Zoutendijk asks (nl) on the forum if over 10,000 different building=* tag keys are really needed.
  • The Mapbox team joined the celebration of the XIII anniversary of OpenStreetMap improving the Peru map, where they added a total of 1199 streets, 1022 buildings, points of interest, lakes, rivers, among others.

Community

  • Daniel Koć requested comments to the text rendering changes planned for osm-carto.
  • mmd wrote about a nice prototype demonstrating the power of the around: filter in Overpass API to show how you can download OSM data along a GPX track.

Imports

  • On the Imports mailing list, Äijälä Tero proposed an import of the Finnish “National Registry of Social and Health care Providers” as POIs.

Events

  • Andreas Bürki has (de) a hackathon in mind for DINAcon in Bern, Switzerland.
  • The 5th UK OpenData Camp will be held in Belfast on the weekend of 21st and 22nd October. The last two batches of tickets will be released on 9th and 21st of September.
  • The SotM 2017 takes place at this weekend in Japan. Travellers get valuable information in the wiki. Laura Barroso, weeklyOSM correspondent in Cuba, has provided – as last year in Brussels – an app with the program.

Humanitarian OSM

Maps

  • Jason Baker presented 13 different OSM-based projects on the occasion of the 13th anniversary of OpenStreetMap.
  • Arun (PlaneMad) published a comparison of how different map data editors visually represent turn restrictions for mappers.

Open Data

  • Yuri Astrakhan announced that the OSM and Wikidata SPARQL service was updated and listed the changes.
  • OpenDataSoft created a map of the open data portals around the world.

Software

  • [1] Peter Karich reported a substantial speed up in routing in GraphHopper with the new “landmark” algorithm.

OSM in the media

  • MIT researchers Christopher Barrington-Leigh and Adam Millard-Ball have published (full text-PDF) an analysis of the completeness of road networks on OSM across the globe. They use techniques which do not rely on comparison datasets which are therefore applicable to all countries. For OSM data in early 2016 they estimate the road network to be 81% complete, and in May 2017, 86%.

Other “geo” things

SotM 2017, Aizuwakamatsu Japan

  • [1] State of the Map 2017 took place in Aizuwakamatsu, Japan from August 18th-20th.

Mapping

  • Kevin Bullock notices that HERE Maps also digitalized the footways he traced for OpenStreetMap in a cemetery outside of Denver.
  • Séverin Ménard has announced the launch of the Tagging-FR mailing list to ease discussions among French speaking mappers on tagging matters. In response, some fear was voiced that adding yet another channel might make discussions harder to follow overall.
  • José Moya presented his proposal to describe pre-Romanesque sites using  building:architecture=preromanesque.
