Example of wikipage containing the new Taginfo feature Taginfo bylo rozšířeno o ukázky vykreslování v seznamu tagů na OSM-wiki1 | Snímek obrazovky z OSM-Wiki pod CC-BY-SA 2.0

OSM CZ

  • Výpadek u Geofabrik a neaktuálnost extraktů OSM.

  • FOSS4G a State of the Map Argentina 2017 se budou konat společně v prosinci na National Geographic Institutu s podporou OSGEO.

Použili Google Maps a data o hospodách poskytl Pubs Galore.

Jsme zarmouceni touto ztrátou a Malenki navždy zůstane v našich vzpomínkách.

Mapování

  • BharataHS, data analytik Mapboxu, popisuje dva postupy detekce a opravy chybných multipolygonů a vyzývá každého ke kontrole stavu ve svém okolí.

Komunita

  • [1] Christoph Hormann popisuje svůj pokrok v renderování velkých vodních ploch při malých přiblíženích mapy a ukazuje některé pěkné příklady své práce.

  • Andrea Musuruane plánuje importovat data v italské Province of Biella.

Mapping

  • BushmanK tries to enhance the definition of the tags man_made=mast and man_made=tower.
  • The voting for nesting_site has started on Dec 5th and will be open until the 19th.
  • Markus Schnalke wants to know how to deal with worthwhile suggestions made on a proposal after voting has started.
  • Marc Zoutendijk created an Overpass query to show all fixme tags on a map. A comment from Andy points to his tool to generate GPX files of fixmes (and notes) to go out and visit them.

Community

  • Sarah Hoffmann is the new mapper of the month.
  • Mapanauta writes an interesting diary entry about the results and new initiatives that were discussed during the GeoChicas/ Geoladies event that happened during the SotM LatAm.
  • Peter Bremer writes, in his blog, that Mapillary released new raster tiles showing all traces and photo locations, for use as a layer in map applications that don’t support vector tiles (such as OsmAnd). OsmAnd users would find the step-by-step instructions, to add the tileset to OsmAnd, interesting.
  • Mappa Mercia has won a prize for its traffic heatmap at the Birmingham Highways Data Challenge. Congratulations!
  • Matt Amos asks on GitHub whether OSM should run a Mattermost server as an alternative communication mechanism to Slack (used by OSMers in the US) and IRC.
  • The Russian blog SHTOSM reported (automatic translation) about Malenki and the great services he did for OSM and the OSM community. (Russisch)

Imports

  • Christoph Hormann writes an insightful post on the imports list, prompted by the San Francisco building heights import. Among other things, he says “The main aim when planning and performing an import (…) needs to be to allow you and your fellow importers to responsibly and productively participate in the community process of open map production” and “It is completely fine to articulate diverging experiences and opinions but in return you also need to respect the views of others”.

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • The OSMF warmly thanks all the donors. A special thank you goes to Mapbox.
  • The wrong list of members was used while sending out the ballots for the OSMF election. The decision was to reissue the ballots and extend the voting period until 16:00 UTC Wednesday, 14 December 2016.
  • Due to the OSMF elections, Christoph explains how Single Transferable Vote (STV) voting works.
  • OpenStreetMap US will have board elections soon. The manifestos of all candidates can be found on the wiki.

Events

  • A group at the San Jorge University of Zaragoza organized a mapathon (automatic translation).
  • Up to the 16th of December, you can apply for the first State of the Map Africa. Until now there’s been one application from Uganda.

Humanitarian OSM

  • Blake Girardot calls to participate in the planning, commenting and development of OSM Tasking Manager 3.0.
  • HOT launched a fund-raising campaign to support local mappers from vulnerable places with micro-grants.
  • Severin Menard criticizes HOT’s transparency and questions the donation campaign’s purpose. Tyler Radford tries to clarify and promises an enlightening blog post.

Maps

  • Paul Norman announced major changes to OpenStreetMap-Carto, which hopefully will soon lead to a database reimport. As a result, the new tags could easily be transferred to the main map.
  • OSMLanduse.org is live – depicting landuses/landcovers according to OSM data by contrasting colours and providing a pie chart of the composition.
  • A tutorial explains how to add labels on a map using mapzen.js and Tangram.

Open Data

  • A talkfr on free digital cartography and sustainable development has been held by members of several OSM communities from West Africa, at the world summit on Open Government Partnership.

Software

  • Chris Hill writes in his blog post about how to replace OpenLayers and use Leaflet.
  • Some Brazilian mappers made a pull request to the Maps.Me application in July, which got accepted now. The pull request adds the translation to Brazilian Portuguese and fixes some errors in the current European Portuguese translation. Problems in the translation are making users to insert data tagged wrongly on OpenStreetMap.
  • Akbar Gumbira shares the work he did in GSOC around the problem of resource sharing in QGIS.

Programming

  • Marc Tobias points out osm4scala, a library for Scala that can read PBF files.

Did you know …

OSM in the media

  • The Washington Post shows six different maps which show the anatomy of America’s vast infrastructure. The maps are created by using data from OpenStreetMap and various government sources. The president-elect is likely to suffer some nerves with the necessary investment of half a trillion dollars to maintain and expand this infrastructure.

Other “geo” things

  • The New York Times reports about the friendly settling of a land dispute between Belgium and the Netherlands.
  • We featured the Dymaxion projection, the projection of Autagraph, and the Pseudo-Autagraph-projection by Marcin Ciura. Now Jos Dirksen presents an animated projection. Vox published a video that explains the problem of the projection of a three-dimensional image (globe) into a plane (map) very vividly.
  • Srinivas Kodali from Hyderabad writes about Hyderabad GHMC wants to have so called smart addressing through a PPP model and he is seriously concerned about the state of all geo databases with closed numbering systems. Here is the tender document (PDF).
  • Qivalon, a startup company from Saarbrücken, Germany, has developed Tankplaner an app for Android und iOS. This app gives an optimal fuel recommendation on the route to be driven. Martin Dirich says to weeklyOSM: “The route calculation is done on the server side with specially prepared OSM data, even if we take the standard components of the respective platform for the visualization.”
  • George Joseph maps U.S. pipeline accidents of the last 30 years in an animated map.

  • LeTopographeFou establishes, that the original intended tagshop=estate_agent is ignored, and the tag office=estate_agent is used instead.
  • User daniel-j-h writes a diary about the anomalies that the OSRM users report and the impact of oneway=reversible tag on the routing engine. He also introduces the oneway=alternating tag and it’s usage in OpenStreetMap.
  • Manoharuss publishes his MAPS.ME edits analyses for November.

  • The newspaper La Croix published (automatic translation) an article about a contributor, Fabrice Ramamonjy who improves the data of Antananarivo with his community of students. Their university supports (automatic translation) the initiative. (Französisch)

Other “geo” things

What3Words assigns an arbitrary three-word-code to any 3×3-metres square of the Earth surface. Critics consider it a bad idea to make a postal system dependent on a commercial company’s licensing system.

About us

Mapping

  • TagaSanPedroAko asks for comments on his power pole extension proposal which will increase the detail of tagging of power poles to include design, material, function and more.
  • The proposal for power switching extensions which increased the tagging detail for power switches (previously mentioned here) was adopted after a successful vote.
  • Voting closed and the proposed features to map (pizza) ovens and bakehouses (communal ones often found in France) were approved. The already mentioned tagging scheme for man-made nesting sites was also approved.
  • Martijn van Exel asks mappers to give ImproveOSM a(nother) try, as Telenav and INRIX have recently added almost 1 million new tiles that might contain missing streets.

Community

  • OpenStreetMap US conducts a census of the US OSM members. The results up to now can be seen on a heat map.
  • The videos of this year’s SotM Latam are now available. Besides many interesting Spanish and Portuguese talks there are also three in the English language.
  • Michael Reichert discusses cleaning up the deprecated and unused rooms and services from OpenStreetMap Wiki’s contact channels page.

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • We congratulate Frederik Ramm and Kate Chapman on their re-election to the OSMF board. If you weren’t able to vote please consider joining the OSMF now!

Events

  • An international workshop on crowdsourcing in “National Mapping” will be held in Leuven, Belgium on April 3rd and 4th, 2017. The workshop is sponsored by EuroSDR, a not-for-profit organisation linking National Mapping and Cadastral Agencies (NMCAs) with research institutes and universities in Europe. Participation from the OpenStreetMap Community is greatly encouraged. Registration is free.
  • You can now submit proposals for SotM Latam 2017.

Humanitarian OSM

  • FT features Missing Maps and HOT and their involvement with Doctors Without Borders as part of its seasonal appeal series.
  • Mapbox supports the HOT donation drive with a generous incentive: if 150 people donate within the next 12 days, Mapbox will donate US$10,000!
  • HOT’s involvement and assistance with the recent earthquake in Aceh is noted by Jakarta Globe.
  • Africa Times follows up FT’s coverage of Missing Maps with an article detailing their involvement in Africa, as well as MapSwipe.
  • HOT hosted a workshop in Suva, Fiji that trained 25 participants on how to use tools such as the iD editor and OpenMapKit. Overall, the workshop was a success, with Mhairi O’Hara reporting that “participants were fully engaged and picked up techniques quickly.”

Programming

  • Based on OsmSharp, the multi-platform opensource routing library Itinero has its own page in the OSM wiki now.
  • Thomas Park releases its open source editor of vector styles for interactive maps. The MVT Styler uses the Mapbox GL Style specification.
  • Paul Norman presents OSMBorder that extracts and transforms administrative boundaries. He developed it for Wikimedia, so also controversial borders in the Wikipedia maps can be displayed. He hopes for more interest in the data and asks for feedback.

Releases

Vladimir Elistratov (vvoovv) has released a new version of his OSM 3D Blender plugin . The plugin is now liable for costs, although the source code is still available.

Other “geo” things

  • On December 12th the European satellite navigation system Galileo has begun operating.
  • The New York Times reported on a research project, in which Italian researchers investigated the change of larger waters. The article contains some impressive animations. OSM data was also used.
  • A research project by Pierre L. Ibisch (de) at the Eberswalde College of Sustainable Development shows (de) the connections of the road network with an unbelievable 36 million kilometers to the number of the resulting areas (600,000), which are left to nature, using a worldwide map (OSM-based) In order to develop sustainably. Conclusion: A global strategy is needed to adapt nature’s infrastructure. Read the stories in English in National Geograhic and in The Conversation.

HDYC zeigt nun auch Informationen des OpenStreetCam-Profils

HDYC now with OpenStreetCam 1

Mapping

  • The very old proposal to introduce a validation date for keys is again being discussed.
  • Rory McCann reports on Townlands.ie, which can now display the historical names. The validity date for keys described above is used for this.
  • Philip Hunt presents his work on the automatic recognition of building outlines and makes further suggestions for improvements. John Whelan takes the opportunity to ask on the talk mailing list, if there is already a directive for such contributions to the database.
  • Daniel J H writes a diary about routing circular junctions. This post gives information about how OSRM distinguishes between roundabout intersections, named, and unnamed roundabouts. It also gives information about the criteria for a junction to be a roundabout.

Community

  • The OpenCage Data Blog interviewed Julio May about OpenStreetMap in Costa Rica.
  • Pascal Neis’ HDYC now also supports OpenStreetCam profiles.
  • Alan described how the STV (single-use) voting system works and why it would be better suited than the majority voting system currently used by OSM US.
  • It has been speculated for a while that Niantic are using OSM data within Pokemon Go (to determine where certain game creatures appear). Since just before Christmas, we’ve now seen a lot of Pokemon Go players updating OpenStreetMap. In many cases their edits are to be welcomed and perfectly valid, but unfortunately a small number are adding unlikely nonexistent footpaths, parks and water features in their locality. However what Niantic are doing is purely speculation – Grant suggests that in the absence of hard evidence we should try and persuade US-based Pokemon Go players to perform TIGER fixup and map missing amenities 🙂 Using Pascal’s search tool for suspicious changesets, it’s easy to find such changes.
  • The app Transport (that we’ve reported on previously) asks if a change from osmdroid to Mapbox would be a software freedom issue for their users.

Events

  • In Solsona, a small town with 10,000 inhabitants near Barcelona, cartography students, headed by teacher Fermí Garriga, meets to collect data in OSM. Since google has “many disadvantages” and the data of the cartographic institute of Catalonia are partly faulty, but the participants map with their local knowledge, OSM-based maps are the best choice, Elpuntavui.cat said (auto translation).

Humanitarian OSM

  • Douglas writes a very detailed summary of the HOT and FSD workshops in Uganda, which focused on the use of crowdsourcing and geodata for financial services.
  • There is page at HOT to make donations for OSM Latam event. Help the Latam event if you can!

switch2OSM

  • Faced with high costs from commercial providers, a Pokemon map decides to “just serve their own OSM tiles” (and saves a lot of money in the process).

Software

  • Lukas Martinelli published a video demonstrating the current status of Maputnik (that we reported on earlier).
  • You may have seen OSM diary entries by Mapbox’s data team such as this one showing potentially problematic changes to OSM. Many of the issues listed in those were revealed by OSMCha, originally written by Wille Marcel. In this diary entry Manohar from Mapbox goes into more detail about OSMCha and what they have found from using it.

Programming

  • OpenStreetMap Carto was released in version 3.0.0. It uses Mapnik 3 for the first time and is a crucial step towards HStores on our main page.

Mapbox releases a new version of their Android SDK which comes with the following enhancements like clustering, integrated support for Mapbox Android services and much more.

About us

  • We wish all our readers a peaceful and a happy new year 2017.The Geman team produced a review of the year’s events with the most important links in our category maps. Unfortunately, the team has had no time to translate it into other languages. But the translations links should be fine in most of the articles. 😉
  • Due to shortage of manpower we have had to drop our Italian version of weeklyOSM. So we will publish in 8 languages in the future. A special thanks to the two remaining editors sabas88 and sbiribizio who tried together to keep the Italian edition alive. For an edition – even if it is just translations – the weeklyOSM requires minimum three editors. We thank them for their willingness to continue as weeklyOSM’s reporters for the Italian community.

Mapping

  • Brian Prangle has written a guide to help with the collection and mapping of fire hydrants in UK. This mapping effort was prompted by the declaration of fire hydrant locations in the West Midlands of England as “secret” (despite each one being labelled with a highly visible, often bright yellow sign)!
  • Harald Hartmann is looking for the source of the tag maxspeed=DE:rural. (automatic translation)
  • TagaSanPedroAko writes in detail about his latest mapping activity, including power line mapping and adding points of interest, in Batangas City – a place he has been regularly mapping.
  • Zverik analyses the change count of POIs by editor type.
  • Toc-rox reports, that often tracks do not have a tracktype and how this is handled in the “Freizeitkarte” . A disussion about good default values has started. (automatic translation)

Did you know …

  • … the German alternative to Google Maps? Maps.metager.de (automatic translation) of the SUMA-EV and the Leibnitzuniversität Hannover is currently in the beta version and offers only Germany-wide search requests on OSM basis. However, it promises to be one of the safest search engines.

Other “geo” things

  • In an article on L’Obs, the online edition of the Nouvel Observateur, it is once again about how Google adapts the national boundaries according to the states’ view.
  • The Verge reports about the launch of the service toilet-locator from Google and India’s Ministry of Urban Development.

Nové možnosti navigace pro vozíčkáře 1 |

OSM CZ

  • Frederik Ramm zve všechny na únorový hack víkend do německého Karlsruhe.
  • V Tombuctu se 7. – 9. ledna konala mapping party.

  • Uživatel Daniel sepsal příspěvek do deníku o tom, jak poslední vydání Open Source Routing Machine (verze 5.5) umožňuje jednodušeji nasadit vlastní navigační služby a sdílí některé užitečné dokumenty k tématu.

Nová vydání

  • OpenStreetMap Routing Machine vydala verzi 5.5 s velkými změnami v navigaci, podporovaných tazích, API a infrastruktuře.

Alyssa Wright, President nadace OpenStreetMap US říká: “Partnerství se snaží vylepšit efektivitu a výkonost využití globální dopravy skrz otevřená data a rozšiřování kapacit.”
  • Takto to vypadá, když projekce Mercator deformuje zemské póly.
  • Treepedia, vyvinuta v Senseable City Lab a MIT a Světovým ekonomickým fórem, poskytuje vizualizaci pokrytí stromy v 12 hlavních městech světa včetně New Yorku, Los Angeles a Paříže.

Data sesbíraná dobrovolníky Červeného kříže 1 | © přispěvatelé OpenStreetMap CC-BY-SA 2.0

OSM CZ

  • Indoor mapování pater a nákupních galerií – upravený iD editor Pavla Zby.
  • Marián si zapnul RSS pro podezřelé sady změn a objevil divné parky – že by Pokemon Go?
  • VOP shrnuje aktuální stav mapových dat od města Brna.
  • Jak mapovat permanentní stavební buňky a montážní jámy případně montážní rampy?

OSM SK

  • Dočasně pozastavené renderování mapy freemap.sk kvůli aktualizaci databáze, POI a dalších příslušných věci.

Komunita

Události

  • Fatouma Harber a Aboul Hassane Cisse pořádali v termínu 7.
  • Pracovní skupina pro konferenci State of the Map Africa otevřela soutěž, ve které hledá logo akce.

Software

  • Robot8A se snaží přesvědčit vývojáře Telegramu, aby použili OSM místo Google Maps. Následuje zajímavá diskuze.

Programování

  • Adrien Pavie představil svou JS knihovnu Pic4Carto, která umožňuje vkládat geotagované fotky do webové stránky. V současné době podporuje Flickr, Mapillary a Wikimedia Commons.
  • Karlos ukazuje nejnovější změny v OSM go, například vestavěné 3D modely laviček nebo větrných turbín a první dojmy z Londýnského metra.

Mapping

  • Chethan Gowda from Mapbox writes about this awesome OSMIC JOSM style plugin which enables icons on all POIs when editing OpenStreetMap.

  • A user is asking in the OSM Forum if there is an alternative to Bing for Malaysia as large areas are not covered yet.

  • User Wille from Brasilia, made available the GPS tracks collected by the Brazilian Environmental Protection Agency. To use this data in ImproveOSM, Martijn van Exel tweaked the algorithm for recognizing missing roads. ImproveOSM now contains many unpaved roads in Brazil. ImproveOSM, works with iD editor and there is also a JOSM plugin of the same.

  • A tweet from Brundritt informs that Bing Maps have been updating its imagery. This process should be completed in a few months according to the tweet.

  • On talk-GB, Andrew Hain reports that a mapper added names to polygons landuse=residential and landuse=commercial in south west London (UK). This mapper did not respond to the changeset comments posted by Hain indicating that the names should be in the description and not the polygons themselves.

  • Joost Schouppe asks which tagging scheme for dog toilettes should he publish as a proposal for voting.

  • On the Tagging mailing list, there is a discussion about OSM tags for public transport cards data, which are gradually replacing transport tickets, according to user Warin.

  • On the Tagging mailing list, Martijn van Exel is asking about destination:street tags which were noticed by Telenav mapping team on (mostly) motorway_link off-ramps in Canada. It’s an undocumented sub-tag of the destination tag. Van Exel is asking about how it is being used and if there is some sort of consensus that is documented somewhere else other than the OSM wiki.

  • Joost Schouppe raises the discussion about shop=fuel which was already mentioned here. The issue concerns shops that sell fuel but are not fuel stations. Joost proposes identifying such products.

  • Mapbox updated the basemap imagery in Washington, DC with 2015 aerial imagery at 3 inch (7.5 cm) resolution. Great for mapping (make mapping great again) and counting people as well when you need alternative facts.

Community

  • Escada interviews Steve All from California (USA), for his Mapper of the Month series. The interview is published on the new website of the Belgian OSM community.

  • According to Pascal Neis, while the number of OSM mappers is increasing around the world, it is decreasing in Germany.

  • Are 25.000 mappers enough for Germany? It’s enough for the urban areas but in the rural ones there is still much to do, a weeklyOSM editor says.

Imports

  • Michael Spreng asks on the imports mailing list about the import of addresses in the Canton of Bern (GEBADR list). There has been no feedback concerning to it. The import was refined and the bulk import is starting, which is expected to take some time. Building layouts are going to be improved when possible.

Humanitarian OSM

  • Pascal Neis comments on a Russell Deffner’s tweet about the validation process of Missing Maps. This process apparently produces a lot of OSM changes.

  • Logistics Cluster updates its access constraints map in South Sudan every Friday. This should be of special interest to humanitarian deliveries in the area.

Maps

  • Paul Norman suggests a simple extension to CartoCSS which would decrease the size of our main page’s style by about one third.

  • Molly Lloyd from Mapbox teamed up with some organizers from the Women’s March to create a map where you can find all the events of Woman’s March in different cities and countries.

  • Take back the tech! uses technology to end violence against women and encourages activism against gender-based violence. Using an OSM-based map, people can report cases of violence against women from all over the world.

  • Some of the issues faced by people creating symbols for map styles aren’t always appreciated.

  • Stephan Bösch-Plepelits showcases on the Dev mailing list, the PTMap, a public transport map rendering based on Overpass API, which renders route relations according to the ‘new’ PTv2 scheme.

  • Joost Schouppe shows in his diary how road mapping (tag highway=*) evolved in Brussels.

switch2OSM

Open Data

  • The international Open Data Hackathon will take place on March 4, 2017. The map was broken at our editorial deadline.

  • Weather data which is produced by the German Weather Service (DWD) could be freely available in the future, according to an article (de) of the Spiegel Online. (automatic translation)

Licences

  • Due to copyright issues with Mapbox, the project OSM2VectorTiles was discontinued. The authors have created a successor, the OpenMapTiles, with their own vector tile scheme, and free from legal problems.

Software

Programming

  • For the Google Summer of Code 2017, project proposals are being collected in the Wiki.

  • Geofabrik reports in a blog post how they recently improved referential integrity in their extracts. With a marginal impact on file size while cutting down processing time, this was made possible by switching to the latest osmium version.

Releases

OSM in the media

  • Mapanica, the OSM community in Nicaragua, proposes a new project to help improve the frequency data of public transport, in order to create a system that allows people to better plan their trips in the city of Managua.

  • German TV GRIP_RTL2 used stamen’s great looking #watercolor OpenStreetMap for Romania in their yesterday’s episode (via pascal_n). No attribution was mentioned.

Other “geo” things

  • This is how buildings look when OSM enthusiasts are rebuilding their house.

  • Geospatial World wrote about DigitalGlobe’s AComp: "When a satellite takes an image, the light reflecting from the ground is impacted by the atmosphere and can affect the visual aesthetics of the image. That’s where DigitalGlobe’s Atmospheric Compensation (AComp) steps in."

  • Carlos Felipe Castillo informed: "The new private beta from Blueshift has arrived!" A fun and easy tool to create dynamic maps.

  • Yorokobu from Spain featured the nice maps from Axis Maps.

  • Euro space agency’s Galileo satellites have been stricken by mystery clock failures.

  • Eric Gundersen shows a satellite image of Barack Obama’s presidential inauguration in 2009 by GeoEye, now DigitalGlobe.

  • Open Stats from India notes that Uber’s OpenData Platform is not really Open Data. They call it #openwashing.

Mapping

  • Since last few days, an increased activity has been detected by newcomers who are targeting Pokémon Go – unfortunately, the term of "vandalism" is applicable to many of those changes. Michael explains (de) in his blog how to find Pokémon mappers and deal with them. Mic.com reported as well.

  • MikeN says in his blog that two more MapRoulette tasks for railway fans are to be done: Crossing Ways: Highway-Railway, US and Crossing Type: Highway-Railway, US. These tasks are well thought through, technically perfect compared to the tasks in Rivers going up the mountain and tasks in Ecuador which still have some technical issues.

  • Pascal Neis presents the new functions in "Find Suspicious OpenStreetMap Changesets" to group by contributor and see all changesets with sums.

The UN conference participants were very impressed by the work and the results achieved by the OSM map support.

  • Missing Maps thank their 20,000 volunteers for their efforts. We too take the opportunity to congratulate them.

  • The HOT Task Manager is currently very slow because another program regularly consumes a lot of resources on the same server.

Maps

  • A map about the Syrian war in 2017 uses tiles from the German style OSM tile server as a background, causing overload to the server. Maybe the German style, which is maintained by Sven Geggus, was preferred for its labeling countries and cities in both Latin and Arabic.

Typical errors that can be solved with Jochen Topf’s MapRoulette task 1 | (C) OpenStreetMap Contributors CC-BY-SA 2.0

Mapping

  • [1] Jochen Topf has started a Maproulette-Challenge to repair invalid areas in OSM and wrote in his blog about it. Let’s begin with self-overlapping closed ways with tag building=*. More Challenges
  • As part of the “fixing broken multipolygons” discussion, Christoph Hormann suggests that removing forest polygons from the old Corine landcover imports might be a better solution than repairing them, because they are very inaccurate.
  • CloCkWeRX posts on enhancements proposed to OnOsm.org, some of them have already been accepted, for example, the location helper and internationalization, among others.
  • Bryan Housel shows how picnic sites can be mapped easily using the iD editor and multi-selections.
  • User Jojo4u proposes a new feature “meadow orchard” (German: “Streuobstwiese”) which is a meadow with scattered fruit trees or fruit trees that are planted in a field. The proposed tagging is possible with combinations of landuse=meadow or landuse=orchard.
  • On talk-fr, Rogelio brings up the matter of toll fee data into OSM. It’s not clear if having this information in OSM is desirable or even feasible but some options are discussed to ease the integration of toll fee prices for OSM-based routing engines.
  • Martin Koppenhoefer proposes the documentation of the usage of amenity=luggage_locker and amenity=locker tags. This initiates a discussion on the need for two different tags for a seemingly similar utility.
  • The usage of amenity=vending_machine tag was discussed at length on the Tagging mailing list including what is within the scope of the term ‘vending’ and what are the alternatives to the amenities tag.
  • Joost Schouppe writes about evaluating completion of the road map network in Flanders, Belgium. A thorough analysis is made along with many graphs and time-lapse animations.
  • User Marczoutendijk wrote an article about the tagging of restaurants and its particularities in OSM. Bon appetit!
  • The Mapbox Data Team invites you to map points of interest in San Francisco using JOSM with the Mapillary plugin. A comprehensive guide is provided and the project is open on the Mapbox tasking manager.

Community

  • JOSM maintainer Dirk Stöcker is concerned about the increasing gap between the translations. He is told that the launchpad translation platform is the problem.
  • Steve Coast showcases his OSM Stats website where the evolution of the various types of ways can be gathered by country. Direct links to: UK and US.

Imports

  • Facebook are suggesting that they try again with their “AI-based” road detection. Last time it didn’t work so well. Last time, imports in Egypt and Thailand were reverted because they were “far more wrong than right” (draining ditches being added as “roads”, among other things). Apparently this time they are now working with a larger team of highly-trained mappers and have added steps to the validation process.
  • Nick Bolten, of the projects OpenSidewalks and AccessMap, announced a test import of footpaths in Seattle (Washington state). There were already extensive discussions on the mailing lists tagging and Imports.
  • Max Bainrot suggests to use the ACTmapi data from Australia for OpenStreetMap. The data is under CC-BY, but there is probably a special permission for OpenStreetMap.

Events

  • The submission of talk proposals for the 2017 State of the Map in Aizu-Wakamatsu, Japan is open until April 2nd.

Humanitarian OSM

  • Mikel Maron reports that Mapbox has matched a US$ 10,000 grant to the HOT Microgrants Program (which we reported earlier).
  • User MangleBlanco writes about impressive geological history of the Southernmost tip of the Caribbean Sea and why open source data might be key to sustainable development in the region. He also pledges to provide high resolution data for mapping efforts and humanitarian projects in the area.
  • It seems that Fred Moine is not quite convinced by the quality of the mapping in Haiti by HOT volunteers.

Maps

  • The OSM website now has a new right-click context menu which was programmed by user mcld. You can now set directions to and from points, centre the map, add notes, etc. The item “show tile image”, which was available in the previous browser-default image context menu, is missing. Ilya Zverev proposed to add it, but his pull request was denied – a long list of comments criticizing Tom followed.
  • Mapzen added a new feature to the Who’s On First Spelunker: the Bundler. Now, after you selected a place, downloading a GeoJSON blob containing all its descendants with selectable categories is a few clicks away!

Open Data

  • Do you already know the Open Digital Elevation Model – “The Portal for sharing the 3rd dimension”? At the beginning of the year, North Rhine-Westphalia (DE), Belgium, New Zealand and Switzerland joined.
  • Open data under Trump probably doesn’t exist any more. The White House’s Open Data Portal has been emptied, user @denormalize reported on Twitter.

Licences

  • KSJ2 data in Japan must not be imported any more because the terms of use have been changed (source).

Software

  • An introduction tutorial for QGIS Atlas, a QGIS feature (formerly a plug-in) that allows you to create map snippets around a collection of features (eg a POI shape file).
  • Ilya Zverev announced a new import tool. The OSM Conflator checks for matching objects in the OSM data. It adds tags to existing objects or creates new nodes for unmatched points.
  • Martin Ždila announced his Toposcope Maker. Toposcopes can be found on top of hills or high places which indicates the direction to notable landscape features or cities.

Programming

  • Frederik Ramm (woodpeck) submitted a pull request which would allow the geometry of deleted OSM objects to be displayed on “browse” pages. It was rejected for various technical reasons – see this comment by Matt and the comments above for a summary.
  • Geofabrik announces that the download server now has full history files for all regions served. These files (called “.osh.pbf”) can be used to run analyses, and one can use Osmium to convert them to a text-based format (“OPL”) that is then accessible for grep et al.

About us

  • The weeklyOSM team happily switched from Slack to the open source software Mattermost for internal communication. After tests conducted on framasoft‘s framateam, a dedicated instance is now up and running thanks to FOSSGIS.

Mapping

  • Inspired by the German OSM-Blog Wochennotiz № 343, and a previous discussion in the German forum, Ogmios wrote an article about the quality of recycling stations and how to improve their tagging. Also there is a new QA page for recycling tagging.

  • Arun writes about broken relations in river banks and wants a good guide to correct such errors. Christoph explains in the comments why there is no easy answer.

  • Daniel-j-h writes on the two tags, exit_to=* and destination=* and then explains why only the second is used in OSRM. Towards the end, he also shares a tool that allows automatic conversion. (de)

  • User naveenpf shows the steps to associate Wikidata QIDs to Indian districts in OSM.

  • Wille Marcel has restarted development on his OSMCHA project. Its main objective is to help to detect potentially harmful OpenStreetMap edits. Wille asks for your feedback and suggestions for improvements.

  • Anthony Hombiat recently presented his PhD thesis (automatic translation) – "A meta-model for structuring OpenStreetMap folksonomy into a new ontology in Grenoble, France". Here is a related paper on the same.

Community

Imports

  • Facebook has repeatedly uploaded import data into OSM, but without previous discussion as required by the import guidelines, as Frederik Ramm criticizes on the discussion page of the import. People are discussing it at the Thailand section of OSM forum in English.

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • Matt Amos announced on the Announce mailing list that the OSM API and the osm.org website will be temporarily unavailable on Sunday, March 12 due to a software upgrade, which will start at 11:00 UTC and hopefully take no longer than one hour.

Events

  • You can now apply for a travel scholarship to help you attend State of the Map 2017 which is in Japan. The deadline is March, 22nd.

  • The first fablab in Benin, blolab, promotes the use of open-source projects and tools, including OpenStreetMap through workshops. They have launched a crowd-funding campaign.

  • The international OpenDataDay will take place with events around the globe. Search for your event on this map.

  • The first in-person meeting of OpenStreetMap United Kingdom CIC (Community Interest Company) will take place at iCentrum, Birmingham on Saturday, March 4th between 11:00 and 16:00.

Humanitarian OSM

  • Biondi Sima reports on mapping the whole of Surabaya, Indonesia. This HOT project (funded by USAID, Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance (OFDA), supported by the University of Hawaii: Pacific Disaster Centre (PDC) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)) concluded in just three months, resulting in addition of over 4,400 buildings and 3000 km of roads.

  • The discussion about the quality of the mapping by HOT-volunteers continues on the hot-mailing list.

  • Pete Master leaves his job as Missing Maps Project Coordinator.

Maps

  • After the ticket about the context menu on the OSM main page had been closed (we reported earlier), the discussion continues on the dev mailing list. Though many who were criticising Tom Hughes, didn’t notice was that the desired feature was actually removed by Leaflet and not by OpenStreetMap.

  • OpenSnowMap is using its own font (ski.ttf) and icons to render the winter sports (downhill, nordic, sledge, etc) of a ski resorts at zoom levels 10 to 12.

switch2OSM

  • The so called "Eurodistrict Strasbourg-Ortenau", uses OSM on its home page.

  • The Open Source Flight Simulator "Flight Gear“, integrates 3D buildings that have been rendered realistically using OSM data in its latest version. (de)

Open Data

  • The surveying authority of the German state of Saxony has, after much negotiation, allowed (automatic translation) the OSM community to use WMS services with aerial imagery and topographic maps as a data source.

Software

  • A German Magazine reports (automatic translation) about a tool by Simon Lührs. This enables urban planners to easily generate figure ground plans out of OpenStreetMap data.

  • Michael von Glasgows published a new map style for winter sports areas. Hartmut Holzgrafe found it so good that he replaced the previous OpenPisteMap style in his maposmatic instances.

  • With the release of Open Source Routing Machine (OSRM) version 5.6, Karen Shea highlights its main feature: Making Travel Time and Edge Weights Independent.

Releases

Did you know …

  • … the Fullscreen Map on sammyshp.de? Besides its full-screen mode, the Leaflet application offers interesting features such as hillshading, a history of views, a functional context menu 😉 (show the current tile, check its status and request re-rendering), and a distance meter.

OSM in the media

  • Following recent political events, a French TV show tries to know where each member of parliament stands on simple questions regarding transparency. The results are displayed on an OSM-based map.

Other “geo” things

  • Nyall Dawson explains the new map coloring algorithm that will be present in QGIS 3.0.

  • Adam Rousell and Alexander Zipf from the GIScience Research Group at the University of Heidelberg publish a paper, which shows a new pedestrian-based navigation service. "Unlike car-based services where instructions generally are comprised of distance and road names, pedestrian instructions should instead focus on the delivery of landmarks to aid in navigation."

  • The OpenHistoricalMap is online again, but changes after May 19th 2015 are now lost, as Rob H. Warren at the mailing list reported.

  • Martijn van Exel posts the latest news from MapRoulette.

Community

  • After Senegal, Burkina Faso and Benin, it is the turn of Togo to start its phase 01 of the project School of Free Geomatics. (fr)
  • For some time now, there have been rumours that Niantic is using OpenStreetMap data to influence Pokemon Go. There’s more discussion about it here, and a recent OSM diary entry has linked to an article amusingly titled ‘How To Create Your Own Nest In Pokemon GO With A Free Tool Called “Open Street Map”’ (and as you’d expect, every other post there, reads like Buzzfeed Bingo too). But this could mean that there are a few people trying to game OpenStreetMap to make things appear in Pokemon Go. Here are a few things that you can do about such vandalism.

The initiative is supported by the Australian Government, Disaster Management Innovation and UN Women.

Maps

  • Walter aka wambacher presents the completely revised version of the Emergency Map.

Mapping

  • The Costa Rican community photomapped the trails in the natural forest reserve of Bosque del Niño in Poás volcano.
  • The Mexican OSM community proposes the use of the hashtag #CallesVioletas to visualize and map the public spaces. This is done by using an inclusive methodology that empowers citizens by generating participatory data from georeferenced photos.
  • User kreuzschnabel asks (automatic translation) in the German user forum how to tag scenery frames.
  • Christoph Hormann cleans up defective multi-polygons and data garbage in the Antarctica region. He wonders why there are so many nodes created with the iD editor.
  • In his draft proposal, user dieterdreist suggests that the key emergency be supplemented by the collection of “dry riser inlet”.
  • Ever wondered why OSM hasn’t adopted a review procedure yet? Read the discussion on responding to vandalism thread in the Talk mailing list. Proponents and opponents share their thoughts.
  • The proposal for drying rooms for sports equipment is under way and Thilo Haug asks for comments.
  • Yuri Astrakhan suggests some features for editors to improve the usage of tags.
  • Tod Fitch thinks that the direction=* tag is used for too many unrelated conventions. The mailing list Tagging discussed some of them.
  • Charlie Loyd from Mapbox, writes a blog about the high-resolution images that are made available in India and can be used for mapping.

Community

Imports

  • An import of trees in the West Midlands of England that has mostly ignored the import guidelines has sparked some difficult discussions – some highly respected members of the GB community spoke up against it.
  • There was a discussion about Facebook’s proposed import (based on automatically recognising streets) on the “import” mailing list. It also continues to be discussed on the Thai forum.

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • The minutes of the board meeting held on 21 February 2017 were published in the wiki of the Foundation. There was a discussion about the transparency of the Data Working Group among other working groups, the necessary profit from SotM and furthermore, the status of the Corporate Membership was presented.

Events

  • Simon Poole invites to the Annual General Meeting of the Swiss OpenStreetMap Association followed by a Mapping Party. This takes place on Saturday, April 8th at the University of Fribourg.
  • The enrollments for SotM France from 2nd to 4th June in Avignon are open.

  • Frikart.no offers Garmin Maps with different Norwegian map styles.

Open Data

  • Christian Quest reported that the RTE (the French electricity network operator) published all network data (overground 45 kV to 400 kV, Underground, etc.) and declared it as open data.

Licences

  • There is now an official common statement by The OpenStreetMap Foundation and Creative Commons for the compatibility of the CC-BY 4.0 with OSM. If you want to use sources that are under the CC-BY 4.0, you must dispense with the prohibition of copying, in addition to your partial decree on the attribution.

Programming

  • Ilya Zverev proposed a pull request that allows OSM users to communicate their email address to external programs via OSM verification.
  • Michael Spreng tests a new routing frontend at the swiss server. He asks for feedback.
  • Frederik Ramm suggests in the Geofabrik blog, what to do if osm2pgsql crashed on your servers due to the huge collective relation uploaded in Brazil a few days ago. (Reported in our last issue)
  • Mapbox checks the instructions of the navigation software OSRM. They use a tool that translates ASCII art of an intersection to a valid OpenStreetMap extract, then pushes the data for that scenario through the entire engine to make sure it behaves correctly.
  • Rob H. Warren is looking for volunteers regularly fetching planet dumps of OpenHistoricalMap as a backup.
  • Naoliv will distribute gifts to anyone who writes a notification tool, that will notify when there is a change in street name in a particular area.

OSM SK

  • Jak z posbíraných dat o BTS stanicích vyrobit mapu pokrytí?
  • Zmapování Špaňodolinského důlního vodovodu z historických map a aktuálního stavu.

Například virtuální odměny a ocenění.

  • Letošní mezinárodní konference State of the Map se koná v japonském Aizu-Wakamatsu.

The OSM April fools of 2017

  • The map editor is now also available in a variant for companies with optimized look and feel.
  • weeklyOSM was first to report how OSMF managed to sell our OSM-Data to Google 😉
  • OSM uses WGS84 as a geodetic reference system, which is not coupled to the motion of the earth plates. In order to compensate for the differences between the most recent reference systems, such as the ETRS89 introduced/implemented in Europe, the coordinates in the OSM database are now being corrected. New versions are not created. This was reported on the official OSMF blog.

Mapping

  • In an answer to a beginner’s question on the German forum, user Galbinus shows (de) very succinctly, how to create a new roundabout using iD. User Polyglot shows how to get the job done using JOSM.
  • A blog post by Marc Gemis on how to add data about immovable heritage structures in Belgium to crowdsourced projects such as OSM (HistOSM and Historic Places) and Wikidata.
  • Multiple German mappers criticize (de) (automatic translation) the app StreetComplete for creating too many changesets. The app aims to add missing tags, but creates one changeset for each changed tag (2 new tags on one object = 2 changesets). Their author is already in touch with the community. See also the bug report on GitHub.
  • John Whelan asks how to deal with landuse=residential within landuse=residential areas that are probably an artefact of the often very rural but nevertheless flatly populated areas, for example in Africa and are reinforced by certain HOT tasks.
  • Grant Slater’s experiments continue with highly accurate GPS measurements based on the OpenSource tool RTKLIB and he inquires if there are other mappers who experiment with Real-time Kinematic (RTK) or offer or need an RTCM stream (GPS correction signals).

Community

Imports

  • Approximately 9.8 million building footprints are made available by Microsoft under ODbL licence. On the Talk-US mailing list, there was a discussion on whether this data could be imported into OSM.
  • Christoph Hormann discovered a very questionable MapRoulette challenge for the location correction of islands in polar regions, which degrades data quality. In his user blog (numerous comments) he asks whether such challenges should be treated as mechanical edits.

Events

  • The State of the Map Asia 2017 is looking for a logo.
  • The SotM Working Group starts early to search for venues for the State of the Map 2018.

Humanitarian OSM

  • A letter from Mocoa, Colombia: – Thank you for the collaboration, 48 hours later we have the first results on the map for the work of humanitarian teams on the ground. Now we need your help to sustain our humanitarian mapping unit (UMH) that raises post disaster data on the ground through donations.
  • Benjamin Herfort from the University of Heidelberg has published an article in the GIScience News Blog titled “10 Million Contributions: It’s time for MapSwipe Analytics!”. He refers, among other things, to several activities:

    and a scientific article
“Towards evaluating the mobile crowdsourcing of geographic information about human settlements.” AGILE 2017 International Conference on Geographic Information Science. ” written by Herfort, B., Reinmuth, M., Porto de Albuquerque M.J. and Zipf, A.

  • The OpenAerialMap project now has a much simpler way to upload new images.
  • Russell Deffner alerts us of the second round of the mapping challenge to eradicate malaria.

Maps

  • [1] Michael Schön showed (de) an updated version of the Geopedia in a lightning talk at the FOSSGIS conference, which now also integrates Youtube and contains some new interesting features.
  • Alexander Matheisen explains on the OpenRailwayMap mailing list, why he will remove the experimental support of vector tiles from openrailwaymap.org.

switch2OSM

  • Mapbox writes about the new feature launched by Twitter that will enable businesses on it to privately share and request locations from their customers.

Software

  • Osmconvert can now also perform simple tagging changes on OSM extracts. See the changed documentation for more information.
  • Robin Boldt and Emux worked together to create a mobile app for Kurviger route planner. Users can test a public beta release for Android systems.

Programming

  • David Valdmann writes in the Mapzen blog about the curved lettering, which were introduced with Tangram.js 0.12.

Did you know …

OSM in the media

  • A Slate article tries to show why burgers have become so expensive in Paris, using many different maps and visualizations based on OSM and the list of French companies, recently published as open data.

Other “geo” things

  • Google Map Maker is history since the end of March. TURN ON also reported about it and thinks about an alternative if one does not want to provide their information to Google.
  • According to Heise online, the camera vehicles are on the road again in Europe.
  • The flight simulator X-Plane-11 is now available. The terrain is based on a current OpenStreetMap.
