Mapping

  • Lars-Erik Wessman would like to add a functionality to their taxi driver app, that would enable taxi drivers to provide missing house numbers along with GPS locations.
  • Zverik created a web frontend for his revert scripts. It allows to revert a maximum of 200 objects. No way/relation membership changes are possible though. On the plus side, it does allow a 3-way merge instead of just restoring older versions, so you won’t run into any conflicts.
  • The OSM wiki proposal for “extended Kneipp water cure” tagging has been approved.

Community

  • An analysis of tagging practices and patterns in urban areas in OpenStreetMap.
  • Jonathan Schleuss asked on talk-us mailing list about what we should do after the Erskine Wildfires.
  • Pergamino Municipality (near Buenos Aires, Argentina) contributes to OSM.
  • In Switzerland, Geometa Lab have started a project observing the places in OpenStreetMap that people are looking at (by counting actual tile views). There’s also an article in the Geoawesomeness blog about it.

Imports

  • Rafael Avila Coya wants to perform an import according to the rules of OSM. First he described the import details in the OSM-wiki, then he submitted his intention to the import mailing list asking for comments.
  • The Madrid City Council released the data of drinking water fountains in the city. Santiago Crespo who manages the import data of Madrid in a wiki table, already created a page for these imports .
  • Christian Ledermann proposed a semi-automatic import of school data from Ordnance Survey (UK).
  • Maning Sambale reports about the work and the tools developed for building imports in Los Angeles.

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • Paul Norman published the meeting minutes for the board meeting of June.
  • Christoph published a detailed summary of the public OSMF board meeting.
  • The OSMF will from now on be holding its board meetings on the 3rd Friday of each month at 6pm London time publicly on mumble.
  • Thomas Skowron tweets “I think I solved the financing problem of the OpenStreetMap Foundation”. For those who haven’t seen it, there have recently been a series of display-once-per-browser conference advertisements in that space (SOTM, SOTM-US and FOSSGIS).

Events

Humanitarian OSM

  • Tyler Redford published a blog from HOT which focusses on the role and the efforts made by HOT to achieve the UN goals for their 2030 Agenda: Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in all states.

MapQuest Tiles shutdown as off July 11 2016 1 | © MapQuest

Mapping

  • Bryce Nesbitt asks for comments on a proposal to use a mechanical edit to change the tagging of pit latrines.
  • Edits of some employees of Mentz in Düsseldorf cause trouble (Deutsch) at the German Forum.
  • User mueschel detected some SEO-trash in OSM and wonders, what to do with it. The garbage he found is recognisable through Tags like Keywords=* and payment options=* (sic!).
  • Since July 09 the new version of MapRoulette is available. The tasks (challenges) from the old MapRoulette must be transferred to the new MapRoulette when the tasks should be continued. Attention: Martijn van Exel also wrote up two tutorials for Challenge Creator: Part1 and Part2. So if you are new at creating challenges, give it a try.
  • Tijmen Stam proposes some changes to the public_transport scheme.
  • On the talk-de list, Tom Pfeifer “complains” (translation) that many statues in parks don’t have toilets for disabled people – never mind statues in general don’t have any other toilets either.

Community

  • A large American geo company suffers a sense of humour failure over a “What 3 Words” parody (warning – thread may not be considered safe for work). Another delightful suggestion to the problem of cross-cultural addressing was suggested on the talk list.
  • A group of mappers challenge the mechanical edit policy as they feel treated wrong by the DWG.

Imports

  • David MacNeil describes a building import he’s done in a part of Canada and hopes to get a permission and not a revert even though he did not follow the import guidelines.
  • Lisa Mastaler from Geographic Institute of University of Heidelberg wants to import sidewalk information (by adding tags to streets) in Heidelberg. See also the discussion (Deutsch) at Talk-de mailing list. (automatic translation)

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • OpenCage Data has joined the OSMF as a corporate member.
  • The OSMF devised a FOSS guideline (FOSS = Free and Open Source Software).
  • Ilya Zverev wants to award special achievements and is therefore collecting ideas in our Wiki.

Humanitarian OSM

  • Doctors without Borders reports about their current cooperation with Missing Maps on Idjwi, the island in the Kivu lake of DR Congo.
  • An Article of Doctors without Borders exemplifies the usefulness of Remote Mapping for the work they do on site.

Maps

  • MapQuest Open has been shut down on July 11th. More information can be found at their error tiles, on the Talk mailing list and at a tweet by Richard Fairhurst.
  • HistOSM is a new map which visualizes historic data that is present in the OSM database.
  • Geraldine Sarmiento plays with “sphere mapping” and tests it with different textures.
  • In their OSM diary, tyr_asd showcases an updated map visualisation of how OSM node density has changed over the last 2 years.

switch2OSM

Open Data

  • Aquaterra (a Belgian geographical services company) has updated its portfolio of digital maps to include some free OSM ones in vector format. (via mapshop_be).

Programming

  • Node 4294967296 is the first node beyond unsigned 32 bit integer. It has been uploaded at the beginning of final match of European Football Championship.

Other “geo” things

  • CartoDB has changed its name to CARTO. Please don’t confuse it with CartoCSS or OpenStreetMap Carto!
  • geocacher.de presents Garmin’s newest outdoor devices, the Oregon 700 and the Oregon 750t. The Oregon 750t comes with an OSM map preinstalled. Both devices can be connected to a smartphone to fetch data from the internet (Weather information, Geocaches).
  • The Technical University of Darmstadt develops a project named “Ui! Traffic” a smartphone app that helps, to regulate ones driving speed such, that one can keep driving through a sequence of green lights. The browser map uses OpenStreetMap as background.
  • Toyota announced that they’ll start creating their own high precision maps with on-board camera and GPS only.
  • Here is a Wikidata query to fetch all buildings that span borders between countries Wikidata has data on. To achieve the same with OSM data would involve downloading all borders and buildings nearby to it using Overpass API, then use another tool to figure out which ones intersect with those borders, unless you have all OSM data in PostGIS, then you can do a spatial query directly.

Graphhopper is seeking help for coding as well as for translations [1]

Mapping

  • A discussion (Deutsch) is ongoing on the German mailing list whether mobile shops (e.g. a mobile takeway) should be mapped on OpenStreetMap or not. If yes, then how can such shops be tagged. (automatic translation)
  • The government of Ecuador has made available a TMS layer of aerial imagery for OpenStreetMap mappers so that they can use it to improve OSM’s data. (Spanisch)
  • #MapatonxGuapi generates geographical open data to control Malaria. Please join and start mapping. The project focuses on the layout of buildings, validation and creation of a complete transport network (roads) and identification of waterways and lakes of the Municipal head of Guapi, Cauca, Colombia. (Spanisch)
  • The tagging proposal for “education 2.0” by user Keder (as we reported in an earlier edition) is now open for voting.
  • Maarten Deen wonders about the newly emerged tag waterway=fairway.
  • Manohar Erikipati had a detailed look at the changes made by Maps.Me users and came to a conclusion that there are many edits which are constructive.

Community

  • User Ziltoidium asked a question on behalf of a Spanish user in the German forum regarding the Berlin Wall. Subsequent activities revived the largely vanished Wall.
  • Build your own OpenStreetMap Tile Server in Ubuntu 16.04, a step by step guide by Xiao Guoan.
  • Marcos Costales publishes an introduction on how to setup your own tileserver (for Europe) with only 120GB of disc space.
  • Our editor Jinal Foflia from weeklyOSM was interviewed as the “Mapper in the Spotlight”.
  • Just in case anyone had forgotten – Field mapping is so much fun!
  • As Pokémon Go is played in the real world, some were wondering about the source for the map data. Anita Lankinen asked about it on Spatineo’s blog and concludes it’s definitely not OSM based.
Also in the OSM Talk mailing list, Pokémon Go and its consequences for OSM are the subject of discussion. One thing should be obvious though: Please don’t add Pokémon spots to OSM, unless you can add actually useful information about the POI itself.
  • Since the OSM Forum admin, Lambertus has been very hard to reach, people in the community are wondering if there’s another forum admin who can be contacted instead of him?
  • [1] Graphhopper is seeking help for coding as well as for translations.

Events

  • “Welcome To Germany – Building Bridges” is the motto of the FOSS4G in Bonn from August 24th till 26th. Please register before August 12th to get early bird advantages.
  • The International Open Data Conference, where the global community will discuss and debate about the future of open data, will happen in Madrid, Spain on October 6th and 7th, 2016. Pre-registration is open.

Humanitarian OSM

  • If you want to help HOT mapping efforts by preprocessing aerial imagery while you’re on the road, you can now use Mapswipe, so mappers can focus on the areas where there are actual features to map and where the imagery is useful (no clouds, sufficient resolution). You can download data beforehand and work with it while offline. The tutorial shows some examples, so that the “mapping”, as it is called there, too, can be carried out correctly.

Software

  • Gnome Maps suffers from the shutdown of MapQuest-Open. They are searching for alternatives which isn’t that easy as they have hardcoded URLs and they’d like to use maps that have English labels worldwide.

Programming

  • Inspired by Pokémon Go John Oram describes how to create a map in Pokémon Go style with Tangram.
  • Mapillary and Mapzen both report about their collaborative effort to match Mapillary data with OpenStreetMap with their tool called Meili. However, neither article evaluates the license-wise occurring problems due to OSM’s share-alike.
  • Nicola introduced the EU supported project i-locate which is dedicated to develop open standards and tools for indoor tracking, mapping and routing. It thereby tries to closely cooperate with OpenStreetMap.

Logo Route from Prince Rupert (CA) to San José (Costa Rica) via Washington (USA) with OpenRouteService 1 | OpenRouteService is going global – including the Americas

Mapping

  • Portable OpenStreetMap (POSM) aims to provide an offline workflow for mapping by integrating with OpenMapKit, FieldPapers, JOSM and others. It enables volunteers to bring OSM data into the field on very small servers that host their own wireless local area network, allowing editing to occur without any access to the Internet at all.
  • User geocodec compares the current indoor mapping of the Olympic venues in Rio de Janeiro in OSM and Google.
  • The Osmose-QA tool is available with world wide coverage. (Französisch) (automatic translation)
  • Coleman McCormick explains how to map OpenStreetMap data with your own captured videos.
  • The Education 2.0 proposal in the wiki was rejected.

Community

  • Benutzer -karlos- thinks that there should be an OSM Go, similar to Pokemon Go, to gain new mappers. He has some basic ideas, but is seeking for further input and help.
  • Australia is moving north – Andy Mabbett asks what the impact of Australia’s plans to change national coordinates will be on OSM. A followup message has lots more detail.
  • Lars Ingebrigtsen considers closing the Gmane archive due to hackers and lawyers costing him much time. Gmane mirrors a large amount of OSM mailing lists, too.
  • As we reported in Issue 314, the Kickstarter campaign for a $99 “MapClub” started by Steve Coast was canceled. A blog post by Alex Mahrou talks about the reasons. Steve reacts to that post and the cancellation.
  • Katrin Humal published a post about Celine Jacquins (mapeadora) work on OpenStreetMap, HOT, Mapillary and her love for Open Data.
  • Martien Sch complains about a change a Mapbox employee made, which removed good, locally surveyed data to replace it with bad remote data. She is also not pleased with his answer on her changeset comment. (Niederländisch) (automatic translation)
  • The Spanish OSM community also wants to create a local chapter.
  • User marczoutendijk shares his learning from running the “Welcome-to-new-mappers” program – an initiative to help new mappers in The Netherlands get started. Having run the program for over a year, marczoutendijk explains why he will no longer continue the program.
  • Michal Migurski explains in his blog why we don’t need “craft mappers” any longer, and why we should surrender those duties to Mapzen, Facebook and the like. Apparently “Facebook’s efforts here are a quantum leap in seeing from a distance” (though incidentally in Thailand their efforts had to be completely reverted and significant problems have been identified with their edits in Egypt). It’s worth reading the full text, if only for Joost Schouppe’s excellent comments.

Imports

  • Chetan Gowda discovered a large amount of poor-quality mapping of streets in Egypt. The comments to his post suggest that this has been auto traced by Facebook.
  • Meg Drouhard at the University of Washington wants to import sidewalks in Seattle. The discussion continues over the talk-us, tagging and imports lists.
  • User schleuss compares building data across a few cities in the U.S and shows the impact of L.A. Building import project in making OSM data ‘building rich’.

Software

Programming

  • Anand Thakker has launched a new project. A promising approach: “A pipeline to simplify building a set of training data for aerial-imagery- and OpenStreetMap- based machine learning. The idea is to use OSM QA Tiles to generate “ground truth” images where each color represents some category derived from OSM features. Being map tiles, it’s then pretty easy to match these up with the desired input imagery.”
  • Marcos Dione explains how he’s automatically extracting the centerline of riverbanks.
  • Mapbox’ lawyer approaches the OSM2Vectortiles project. Following accusations regarding authorship of the project’s PBF files there now seems to be a problem with the BSD-licensed “MapBox Streets Style”.

Mapping

  • The University of Washington wants to import sidewalks into OSM. They therefore try to discuss a new tagging scheme presented in a proposal that is supposed to expand upon existing tagging schemes. There’s plenty of criticism on the list, and only limited response to that, but there is more discussion on the wiki.

Community

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • The OSM Awards is calling for nominees in six categories – Core Systems, Innovation, Writing, Mapping, Community and the Ulf Möller Memorial Award. The awards will be presented at State of The Map conference (SOTM) 2016. The Source code of the website is open for improvements and translation.

Maps

  • The well known guides lonely planet launch an app with offline maps using Mapbox’s mobile SDK.
  • The desktop app, GNOME Maps, stopped working when MapQuest discontinued unrestricted tile access to their maps. Mapbox has now stepped in as the data provider for GNOME Maps (one of the most importantant features desired apparently was Latin alphabet “Western” names, even of places not natively using the Latin alphabet).
  • Walter Nordmann complains that for weeks the German-French border is damaged near Luxembourg in UMAP. He thinks it looks like “nobody cares“.

Mapping

  • On talk-de, Nikhil Prabhakar from Mapbox outlines a proposal to map turn restrictions and exit & destination tags remotely. Some people reply to the thread; the rest of OSM reaches for the popcorn :)The plan is to start in Stuttgart (almost no Mapillary images), Wolfsburg and Berlin (the homes of Daimler, Porsche, VW, and allegedly someone else). Mapbox is also doing something similar in Canada.
  • Mapbox Peru team led a Mapillary event at Ayacucho, Huamanga during which over 8000 photos were captured while walking, biking and driving.
  • @Mapeadora reports on an artistic project based on the memory of missing persons in Michoacán: “El caminar y los mapas de la memoria” (automatic translation) based on various audiovisual techniques, where a map of the journeys made in the State of Michoacan used georeferenced taking pictures using #Mapillary.
  • There’s discussion on talk-gb about a mapper editing boundaries around the East Midlands of England (specifically “unparished areas”, where there’s no local authority at admin level 10). There has also been considerable criticism of his “automated responses” to changeset discussion comments.
  • Martijn van Exel writes in his user blog about the newly restarted OpenStreetView (OSV) – now looked after by Telenav. Martijn points out that the OSV app can retrieve data from the bus systems of the car for better geo-referencing using the OBD2 interface. Unlike Mapillary, the front and back end are both free software. This issue is still open, however… we invite you to collaborate with pictures and code!
  • Pokemon Go works as a perfect excuse while collecting ref points for new #OpenStreetMap aerial imagery correction, Grant Slater says.

Community

  • User Alan Bragg writes about the celebrations at New Hampshire for OSM’s 12th birthday.
  • In an interview with OpenCage Data, Pekka Sarkola talks about the OSM community in Finland including their current work and challenges they face.
  • Last week, OpenStreetMap turned 12 with birthday celebrations across the world at Kigali, Dublin, Copenhagen, Moscow, New Hampshire, London, Bangalore, Essen, Teyateyaneng and Tunis.
  • Lambertus is the only person with full admin rights for the OSM forum and he is apparently not available. Therefore, there is discussion on the talk mailing list to consider setting up a new forum. Some of the concerns discussed were preserving the existing data.
  • Pascal Neis’s How did you contribute to OpenStreetMap? now has a heatmap Calendar too!

Imports

  • The Data Working Group (DWG) has reverted Facebook’s undiscussed import of poor quality autorecognized streets in Egypt. See also the discussion on one of the reverted changesets.

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • The DWG (Data Working Group) is looking for English to Chinese translation help.
  • Sven Geggus thinks that because membership@osmfoundation.org uses Google’s email services and rejects emails from his server as “spam”, it might be a reason to resign from OSMF . (Deutsch) (automatic translation)

Events

  • The BarCamp Takoradi 2016 will take place on 27th August 2016 in Takoradi, Ghana at a venue that is yet to be decided. The theme for this year is “Professionalism in entertainment and entrepreneurship”.

Humanitarian OSM

  • Ramani Huria has worked with Garmin & Mapillary to conduct street view mapping of Dar es Salaam using Mapillary. This street view imagery can be used in numerous ways, including to take virtual walks & explore landmarks, map key points of interest, and survey solutions.

Maps

  • Markus Reuter from Netzpolitik.org introduces an OpenStreetMap project Surveillance under Surveillance. It is an interactive map of all the surveillance cameras mapped so far.

  • Stamen launched a worldwide version of the OSM-based Terrain map. The repo is public and Stamen welcomes collaborators.
  • If a client that uses the tile servers used for OSM’s “standard” map style (i.e. tile.openstreetmap.org etc.), and doesn’t send an HTTP referrer, it will operate with reduced priority in the future, as Paul Norman announced on the dev mailing list. It is done to reduce the overloading of those servers. The overloading was caused inter alia, by FastPokeMap.
  • Lukas Martinelli asks what Antarctica really looks like? That’s why Martin Raifer points to an old article (by Christoph Hormann).

About us

  • When reporting on OpenStreetView last week we made a mistake. Thank you Jochen for pointing it out. (Deutsch)

Mapping

  • Voting on the proposed tag healthcare=midwife started on August 22nd and closes on September 5th.
  • More on the ‘MAPS.ME’ – a new application version is rolled out by them which includes an extra “name:<language>” key (also a Github isssue is filed on the same).
  • In a blog post, Seth Fitzsimmons explains the technical details of ‘Portable OSM’.
  • Joost Schouppe reported about ‘open’ road data in Flanders (Belgium) and how it can be used in OpenStreetMap.

  • Christian Quest wrote a bash script that allows him to copy and georeference a Linux-mounted iPhone’s Mapillary images via exif data to use them directly in JOSM before uploading.

Community

  • Escada interviews Jorieke Vyncke from Belgium, as this month’s “Mapper of the Month”.
  • “OpenStreetMap at the Crossroads” is the subject of Laura O’Gradys message on the Canadian OSM talk mailing list describing how communication stopped between her a “local craft mapper” and a “robot Mapper”. Laura refers in her e-mail explicitly to the blog post OpenStreetMap at the Crossroads from Jonathan Crowe who qualifies and discusses the statements of Migurski.

Imports

  • This Minneapolis Maptime announcement caused a certain amount of amusement in some quarters (” … techniques bringing in large open source datasets to Open Street Map … No previous Open Street Map experience is necessary”). However Minneapolis did get 3 new local users last week, and a few more further afield.
  • The OSM versus TIGER Battle Grid has been resurrected, now with Stamen tiles in the background. The Battle Grid points out areas where recent USA Census TIGER data is different from OSM data. This usually means OSM data needs to be updated (but sometimes it means TIGER is worse than OSM). 🙂 If you have not tried it, go to http://184.73.220.107/battlegrid and solve a few squares.

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • Following some issues with its current bank, OSMF is on the look out for an alternate bank which will provide the board more flexibility in terms of multiple currencies and international access. Frederik Ramm asks for advice.

Events

  • The State of the Map will host a social event for the participants of the conference on September 24th.
  • On Friday, 26 August 2016 an interesting Mapathon will take place in Colombia from 08:00 AM to 12:15 PM. Targets among others are highway=tertiary. This Mapathon is aimed at a group of Spanish speaking students which are part of YouthMappers, students from Universities in Colombia and the general Colombian OSM community. There are awards up for grabs (including field trips and tablets) in multiple categories.

Maps

  • [1] Lukas Martinelli published osm-activity, a global heat map of OpenStreetMap where one can see the number of changes made to OSM in each tile dating back to 2008. The sources are available on Github. Lukas Martinelli says: “When you click on a region a timeline is displayed and you can see imports and long-term trends.”
  • Opentopomap doesn’t update anymore? Stefan Erhardt is looking for help. (Deutsch) (automatic translation)
  • The New Cloud Atlas is a special map for telecommunications infrastructure presented by Tim Waters on the talk mailing list and in his blog.
  • Paul Norman asks how “handling the need to do both cartographic and technical review”.

Licences

  • Due to the confusion about Mapbox vector styles, Simon Poole asked Mapbox about 2 weeks ago to clarify their licences.

Software

  • Mapbox has now acquired Human, a company which developed an app focusing on activity tracking.
  • The latest version (6.3.2) of Maps.me offers several improvements, such as considering gradients in bicycle routing, and a clearer map layout.
  • The OsmAnd developers work on a new rendering engine with multi-threading.

Programming

  • Mapz provides two job vacancies for “people with a penchant for OpenStreetMap”.
  • Frederik Ramm proposed in a pull request on GitHub to reduce the maximum size of change sets from 50,000 to 10,000 objects. He received only affirmative responses.
  • Want to install Overpass yourself? It’s really not that difficult 😉
  • If the indexes of your PostgreSQL database are too large, may be pgindexrebuild by Rory McCann can help.
  • Weather Decision Technologies released on Github a Java library for processing Mapbox vector tiles under the Apache License.

Mapping

  • Sometimes the notes left by the Navmii users (supposedly to help OSM mappers improve the map) are not very helpful.
  • All you OpenStreetMappers storing images in Mapillary? Guess what — HERE Maps is going to use them to update their maps too!
  • A ‘totally confused’ mapper starts a lengthy discussion on the tagging list on how to tag freeway lanes approaching an exit.
  • Marc Zoutendijk points out an interesting problem in tagging restaurants which offer multiple cuisines. How does one add multiple values to the cuisine key?
  • The tagging mailing list discussed whether and how speed limits (when there is actually no limit) should be tagged.
  • Martin Koppenhoefer wonders why name=* tag is used for natural=cave_entrance and suggests using cave:name = * instead.
  • The official aerial imagery of canton Basel-Stadt (Switzerland), taken in April 2015, is now available for mapping at Mapproxy service of Swiss OSM Association.
  • Kreuzschnabel gives an example why “armchair” mapping via seemingly good Bing imagery still needs attention in order not to impair our data. (automatic translation (Deutsch)
  • Nammala outlines a way of using Mapillary data to keep OSM turn restrictions up to date.

Community

  • Falk (if you’re not familiar, think “the German Rand-McNally or Bartholomew”) introduced (Deutsch) (automatic translation) their new outdoor navigation device Tiger Blu. About us

  • We were asked (Deutsch) after publishing issue 319 why MAPS.ME was marked as non-free software. MAPS.ME is not free software because it contains Code2000 font which is a shareware. We mark a software as free software if all its parts are free software as defined by Debian Free Software Guidelines.

Mapping

  • Johan Gyllenspetz of Mapillary, tweets about their new filter function for traffic signs.
  • Jochen Topf blogs about a service that Martin Raifer created to show the history of tags in nice graphs. Some more background in a diary entry from Martin. Matthijs Melissen has already used this to find some interesting statistics.
  • On the Tagging mailing list, Martin Koppenhaofer initiates a discussion on the tagging of the BND (the German intelligence service) in Bad Aibling. He points out that landuse = military doesn’t fit and suggests alternatives.
  • Swiss OSM community discusses, in the Talk-ch mailing list, whether they should map postal code polygons (as boundary relations) similar to what happened in Germany.
  • User Nammala from Mapbox updates about progress of reviewing navigation data in Germany in the OSM forum and diary.

Community

  • This year, for the first time in history of OpenStreetMap, there is a preparation for the OpenStreetMap Awards, they will be presented this September at the State of the Map 2016 in Brussels. Don’t forget to vote for your favourites! Anyone who is registered at OSM may participate. So you are! Please vote.
  • On the OSM-Talk mailing list, Matthijs Melissa proposed to replace the wiki page Map Features with an automatically generated version from Taginfo.
  • Martin Raifer has visualized the information of anonymized and simplified log-files of OSMF Tileserver provided by the OSMF.

Imports

  • Greg shares his idea to import trigonometric points in OSM in the Talk-gb mailing list.

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • Brian Prangle communicates in the talk-GB mailing list informing that the statutes of the OpenStreetMap UK Community Interest Company has been reviewed by solicitors.

  • Geofabrik invites everyone to be a part of the hack weekend on 29th and 30th October in Karlsruhe.
  • We are going to have two continental State of the Map conferences: in Asia and Latin America.
    • The State of the Map Asia will take place in Manila, Philippines, on October 1st and 2nd. The program schedule will be published soon.
    • São Paulo, Brazil, will host the State of the Map Latam from November 25th to 27th. The call for talks, workshops and working groups is still open: submit yours before September 25th! The event accepts activities in English, Spanish and Portuguese.

  • Submit your scholarship application for SotM Asia.
  • Microsoft and Mapzen have built a Augmented reality app which is a navigation system for visually impaired people. It was presented at the SotM-US as well.
  • The Newton hurricane struck the area of Southern California. Tasking Manager has been made to facilitate mapping by the community. The red zone is the priority area. The whole area is poorly mapped, so the challenge is strong! Please help map!
  • Mapswipe was probably used with success in Myanmar.

Maps

  • [1] The Austrian Taxi company Bruckbacher advertises its regional knowledge and therefore painted (automatic translation) a huge OSM map on one of its cars.
  • Andy Allan runs his map services (OpenCycleMap, Transport map) under the label Thunderforest. These services are converted to API keys (instead of the previous HTTP Referrer).

Software

Programming

  • Yves asks in the Dev mailing list, “Along with minutely diffs, I wonder if expired tiles lists would be something to be shared”. Andy Allan justified why that does not happen.
  • Due to high load on the OSMF tile server, requests without HTTP-Referrer are considered as low-priority processes (that is too slow for interactive maps). This happens even if you include the tiles over HTTP on an HTTPS page,.

OSM in the media

  • An interesting article in the Melbourne Age, on how economics can make your dinner taste better! They did some analysis and matched review data about restaurants with geospatial data from OpenStreetMap and found that there is a strong negative link between restaurant quality – as defined by star ratings – and proximity to tourist attractions and street corners.

Other “geo” things

  • You do not want to be constantly tracked by Google and hence delete its mapping service on your phone. Would that suffice? Google makes it harder to evade it’s data collection.
  • Here is a video of generating a 3D city model in LOD1 by extrusion, with the software 3dfier developed by the 3D Geoinformation group at TU Delft and partially funded by Kadaster.
  • Japan is mapping its streets in 3D to support their autonomous taxis for the 2020 Olympic Games.
  • Mapbox opened a development office in Detroit.
  • Tanvi Misra published an article on CityLab with the headline “Gorgeous Maps of an Ugly War” about the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
  • Owen Powell, a GIS analyst and cartographer, explains his workflow in creating both beautiful and accurate digital 3D maps using Blender and GIS data in great detail.
  • German science magazine “Spektrum” discusses possible effects of the use of electronic navigation aids on our natural sense of direction.
  • User schleuss shares interesting aerial imagery captured during the LA Building import project. A batman landing rooftop, a hexagonal pool and a bunch of green cars are among the weird things seen from above Los Angeles.

SotM 2016

  • During State of the Map in Brussels the 2016 funding drive was started, which shall finance the current cost of the OSMF. This is (not only) including the purchase and operation of the OSM servers. The funding goal is 70,000 Euro.
  • The videos from State of the Map 2016 are available online as full event streams. It will be split by talk shortly.
  • [1] At SotM the winner of the OSM awards were published (number of votes and given votes in brackets): Roland Olbricht (213/665), Lukas Martinelli and Manuel Roth (160/500), WeeklyOSM-Team (377/584), Martin Ždila (186/554), Pascal Neis (306/605), Frederik Ramm (186/576). More detailed results are on the voting platform, and there is a OSMF-Blog post.
  • You can find some pictures from the SotM Brussels with the tag sotm2016 on flickr.
  • At this year’s SotM there had been many wearers of a craftmapper t-shirt. The shirt was distributed at the conference as a reply to Michal Migurskis’s blog post (as reported here earlier). Which created some speculation on twitter.
  • Gregory Marler shares his experience of being a Code of Conduct volunteer at the SoTM Brussels.

Mapping

  • BushmanK thinks that the RFC status of proposals is not always respected and are not allowed to pass into the voting phase without processing all comments and questions.
  • On the Tagging mailing list, the tag for cenotaph is being discussed. It seems like none of these memorials had been added to OSM.
  • Warin has discovered an eight year old draft of a proposal to tag floodplains (natural=floodplain).
  • Abhishek of the Mapbox data team reports in his user diary about their work to improve the positional accuracy of the road network in Taiwan. (we reported earlier)

Community

  • Bryan Housel suggests in the Github repository of OpenStreetMap to introduce a code of conduct. In Bryan’s simultaneously added pull request there is a discussion about who would be the correct person to address for complaints.
  • About 100 students of the 4th grade of Santa Maria high school of Portugalete mapped the problematic points for people with reduced mobility and suggested more accessible routes so they can reach destinations, which are critical for them. Mapping Portugalete according to the report of this blog (automatic translation) is one of the many actions that were developed since 2014 by the program Ciudades Amigables (Friendly Cities).
  • Yahoo Finance reported, that Telenav on September 22 announced the availability of Open Street View, a free open – source platform, designed to accelerate the development of OSM. The platform includes free iOS and Android apps.
  • Pascal Neis experiments with a presentation of active mappers on a map.
  • Ben Discoe (in possibly the most polite “rant” ever written) commented on Michal Migurskis blogpost “OSM at Crossroads” (which was mentioned in weeklyOSM previously). The issue that he raises is somewhat different however – money!
  • Pratik Yadav asks for the reason to choose a particular username for OpenStreetMap. First answers can be found in the comments.

Imports

  • Spencer Gardner tries to find out how the lanes=* tag of oneway streets got “caculated” for streets in Massachusetts during the MassGIS Road Import.
  • The highway milestones became OpenData in France. The community discusses the tags, especially the value for the ref-tag
  • Dewi Sulistioningrum, an member of HOT, is interested in importing “infrastructure” (schools, mosques, hospitals etc.) and boundaries in a part of Indonesia.

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • The Swiss OpenStreetMap Association is now a recognized local chapter (regional office) of OSMF. More local chapters exist in Italy and Iceland.

Humanitarian OSM

  • Biondi Sima of HOT Indonesia reported about three ways to DRR in Indonesia.
  • The project Healthsites.io that collects medical care centers for humanitarian purposes is now in a ß-status.
  • HOT reports about a week-long pre-assessment trip in Karamoja, Uganda.

Maps

  • The OpenCycleMap now supports cycleway: right = track / lane and cycleway: left = track / lane.
  • The Open Transport Net project with 14 European partners involved, opens and visualizes transport data in Europe. The city of Pilsen (Czech republic) visualized the traffic flow before and when major public works were taking place in the center of the city. The Pilsener citizens can see on the web which traffic issues they can expect.
  • Sven Geggus has deployed (Deutsch) (automatic translation) the new German map style, a fork of OSM Carto with German/transliterated labels and “German” road colours, on openstreetmap.de.
  • Yvecai has created a new base layer for OpenSnowMap, which allows good contrast and good visibility for the display of ski slopes.

Open Data

Software

  • Urbica has developed Galton an OSM-data and OSRM-engine based router that shows the areas for any point that can be reached in a fixed time. The source code is on Github. On her blog, the project is described more details.

Programming

  • On AWS there’s a new public and free digital elevation model which was created with Mapzen’s help out of different free data sources.
  • Tim Teulings reports about his work on libosmscout during the SommerCamp in Essen.
  • Lukas Martinelli searches for supporters on Kickstarter.com to develop a free style editor for JSON Styles for MapboxGL. The funding target was 4000 CHF and was reached during the SotM weekend.

The new mapping bike of Stéphane Péneau 1 | Image by Stéphane Péneau under CC-BY-SA

About us

  • This year’s OSM donation drive is still running. weeklyOSM says thank you to: Peter Karich (Graphhopper) for 1000 Euro, Florian Schenk (500 Euro), Viktar Shcherb (OsmAnd team) for 300 Euro, Andreas Geyer-Schulz, Markus Hallermann, Henri Geist and Julian Hollingbery each for 200 Euro and all the other donors to OSMF.

Mapping

  • Last week Mexico launched (automatic translation) their first cableway for public transportation: the ‘Mexicable’. The importance of the Mexicable is that it will be able to transport people from the poor neighborhoods of the suburbs of the capital. @federicomena asked (automatic translation) OSMers in Mexico to help map the stations. A week later the stations were mapped on OSM.
  • Ziltoidium asks (Deutsch) in the German Forum, whether one can exert influence on bicycle routing by means of special tagging. (automatic translation)
  • Claudio Cossio reported about photomapping in Cuba on the occasion of the International Free Software Conference .
  • The weekly roundup by Krishna Nammala (Mapbox) about suspicious changes that were commented or reverted.

Community

  • ImreSamu has written a diary entry after reading Michal Migurski’s blog post that talked about robot mapping. Influenced by Sadya Nadella’s “laws of robotics” (which was of course influenced by Asimov), ImreSamu suggests what rules robot mappers should have to adhere to.
  • OSM Mexico participated in and gave talks at the Latin American Geospatial Forum 2016 (one of the most prestigious annual conferences organized in Latin America).
  • User SK53 has done some experiments with topological skeletons of water surfaces and reported about it.
  • There’s discussion in the DE forum about the tone and etiquette used in discussions, including changeset comment discussions, with reference to the draft community code of conduct that has lain ignored in the wiki for some years (including a suggestion, perhaps not entirely serious, for a “Ministry of Truth Working Group”). There’s also been discussion of codes of conduct elsewhere, such as for OSM website and “Standard” map style development.
  • Guillaume is looking for documentation for uMap in English. As a basis for a new one, commentors suggest (Französisch) the French version.
  • Christoph Hormann shares his views about the OSM Awards in his OSM diary.
  • [1] Stéphane Péneau presents his new mapping bike. Stephane explains the system here: Part1 and Part2
  • The Swiss SOSM updated their installation of uMap to the latest version.
  • On Spreadshirt.com you can order your T-shirt with the Craftmapper design as it was distributed at SotM.

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • Skrill.com, a payment service you have to use if you use Flattr, owes the OSMF £ 500 and refuses to pay its debts.

Events

  • Harry Wood published a recap of this year’s SotM in the OSM blog.
  • Daniel and Victor reminds about this year’s SotM LatAm (Latin America) that takes place in São Paulo from 25 to 27 November (Brazilian Portuguese).
  • In Tuscany (in the area of Alta Versilia) a hiking mapping party took place (Italian) from September 30 until October 02.

Humanitarian OSM

Maps

  • Anton of Transit wrote a very detailed and quite interesting explanation of how they autogenerate their transit maps for their supported cities worldwide.
  • Srikanth Lakshmanan reported that he has installed a language selection for 12 languages for India openstreetmap.in.

Open Data

  • DigitalGlobe delivered the latest satellite imagery after Hurricane Matthew’s catastrophe in Haiti under a CC BY license for humanitarian organizations such as HOT and the American Red Cross. Many of the images are also now available in OpenAerialMap, both for download and as map services.

Programming

  • Klokan Technologies (known for their OSM2VectorTiles) started OSMNames, a new project that features basic place search functionality.
  • Mapzen published a new API called Libpostal to expand address data into component parts (like house number, street, city etc.).
  • Kepta, a GSoC intern, summarizes his contribution over the summer. He worked on building a lane editor for iD.

  • The University of Gijon held an experimental workshop (automatic translation) within the framework of the INCUNA VIII Conference in which free use technologies are used to collect data of all kinds, visible and invisible, on buildings. The underlying intention (apart from practicing with OSM) is to extract useful information about the potential and use of public space.

Other “geo” things

  • One year after the historic agreement in the border conflicts between India and Bangladesh the Indian-Bangladeshi enclaves are still in Google Maps.
  • Wendy Lee from the San Francisco Chronicle reported from the Google Summit in California, where Jen Filzpatrick (Head of Google Maps) talks about the challenge of creating maps for self-driving cars. About us

  • Procuram-se editores! Se é leitor do weeklyOSM ajude a traduzi-lo para português recolhendo também notícias de Portugal e Brasil relativas ao OSM. Ajude a relançar o idioma neste semanário. (Portugiesisch)

Mapping

  • Lorenzo Mastrogiacomi publishes a proposal for adding the racetrack tag for motor vehicles to OpenStreetMap.
  • [1] Yvan asks for opinions on the tagging mailing list about his proposal amenity=baking_oven. At the same time he wants to establish the tag amenity=bakehouse.
  • AJ Ashton explains how to tag complicated buildings and add 3D information to them. This information can now also be viewed on Mapbox Streets and Mapbox GL JS.
  • Basstoelpel starts a discussion about a mechanical edit to convert type into leaf_type for natural=tree in the German forum (automatic translation).
  • Ilya Zverik, who works for MAPS.ME, blogged about the history of editing the name tag using this simple editor, and the challenges of offering simple tag editing functions.

Community

  • OSM forum moves to a new server on Saturday the 22nd of October.
  • A huge mapping party held at the town of Böblingen witnessed 850 people from (Germany) working together to capture wheelchair accessibility data in Böblingen county, using wheelmap. (Deutsch) (automatic translation)
  • Escada declares Sus as the Belgian Mapper of the month. WeeklyOSM admires his impressive performance. Escada also wonders whether François is the oldest mapper ever.

Imports

  • On the Spanish Talk-es mailing list, a discussion (Spanisch) about an import of taxi ranks has started. There is also a wiki page for this import.
  • Statistics Canada, the national statistical office, started a crowdsourcing project in collaboration with the local OSM community on Monday to collect information such as geometry, height etc. for non-residential buildings using a modified iD editor. Before and during the launch, three users imported buildings and addresses in Ottawa, but sadly failed to comply with the import guidelines, debated enforcement of it, and engaged in edit warring. John Whelan summarized the project itself.

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • Simone Cortesi, treasurer of the Italian OSMF Chapter (Wikimedia Italia), signed a memorandum of understanding with the Club Alpino Italiano, the national alpine association. They plan to collaborate on improving data about hiking routes and facilities. (Italienisch) (automatic translation)

Events

Humanitarian OSM

  • Two competing humanitarian mapping organizations are currently operating in Haiti – on the one hand the American HOT US Inc., on the other hand a group of French-speaking mappers, called Projet EOF. The latter one has built up, according to their own statements, a local community for the last six years and has contact to the local government.HOT US Inc. and the francophone community have been in conflict for a while. Pierre Beland reminds that HOT US is blocking postings on the HOT mailing list.Projet EOF runs it’s own tasking manager. Read here what happened as well and conceive your own opinion.
  • Severin Menard initiates a discussion about necessary improvements to the Tasking Manager to combat the problem of “crappy newbie edits” of humanitarian mappers. A suggestion by John Whelan to disable the connection between the Tasking Manager and the iD editor for difficult tasks is not met with disapproval. The quality issue has stuck with the OSM humanitarian community since the Haiti earthquake in 2010 and has been reoccurring.
  • Tyler Radford announces the publication of HOT’s 2015 Annual Report that includes statistics and information about HOT’s community achievements over the last year.
  • The disastermappers group at the GIScience department of Heidelberg University extracted all the information related to the Missing Maps project from the HOT Tasking Manager and published it on a map.
  • John Whelan is looking for experienced JOSM mappers to improve data in Africa. In his email, he describes the procedure.
  • Raw drone images captured in Jérémie are made available. Mappers are welcome to use these images to map the disaster struck areas in Haiti.

switch2OSM

  • SIASAR the platform for the management, planning and monitoring of Water and Sanitation in Rural Areas including the governments of Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, Oaxaca (Mexico), Peru, Ceará (Brazil) and Bolivia are using (automatic translation) OSM in the new version. The importance of this project is that, it allows user to analyze the current situation, expose the shortcomings and give governments the tools that help them to invest.
  • The first mention of a commercial use of OSM was ten years ago.

Open Data

  • Lisbon Town Hall publishes (Portugiesisch) (automatic translation) its GIS data under public domain. Since February 2016, it has issued updates at least twice a month.

Software

  • Gamereactor reports that Aerosoft Flight Simulator X-Plane 11 will be published in 2016. The road maps were obtained from OSM data.
  • Have you always wanted your OSM appointments on your phone? Christoph, aka TheFive (the spiritual father of weekly’s Content Management System) published the OSM calendar in his blog and is looking for ß-testers. The list of available event calendars on OSMCAL is impressive.
  • OsmAnd introduces a new topographic map style.
  • MapQuest announces the decommissioning of the Xapi API and recommends the users of Xapi to move to Overpass API service. The Xapi open API service will be retired on October 31, 2016.

Programming

  • Bill Morris explains how to process spatial data in parallel using GNU Parallel by reprojecting a bunch of shape files.
  • mmd has released a prototype for downloading OSM data in PBF format through the dev instance of Overpass. The first reaction from Pierre is very positive.
  • Mapbox now offers its vector tiles “style optimized”. Users can add the style to the request. The Server removes the tags from the vector tile that are not used by the users.
  • Mapzen has updated its House styles. There are improvements on label priority and positioning.
  • After the successful completion of Ilya’s paid challenge to add subscription to diary comments, Mikel announces notifications listing as the second challenge.
  • Starting with version 0.5.5, CGImap, the C++ implementation of OSM API, calculates the usage limits based on the sent OAuth tokens instead of IP address of the editor who sends the token. CGImap also supports the /changesets/#{id} API call now.
  • OSM Scout Server is a free server for Sailfish OS and Linux, which delivers tiles, calculates routes and contains a search function. It is based on the libosmscout library. User rinigus presents the server in his user diary.

Mapping

  • Martijn updated the imagery for his MapRoulette task to map cemeteries in Texas.
  • Martijn van Exel announced on the Talk-Ca mailing list, that colleagues in the Telenav mapping team are mapping turn restrictions in several Canadian cities using OpenStreetView and Mapillary as sources.
  • Cédric Briner asks, on the Talk-ch mailing list, about the procedure of tagging a walking bus route.
  • Multipolygon view of “OpenStreetMap-Inspector” has been turned off. The Areas view replaces it.

Community

  • jidanni tried to make OpenStreetMap’s conference advertising and donation drive banners less persistent, and briefly suggested that they be added to Adblock’s blocking list. He withdrew that request following much criticism.
  • UCC Ghana Youthmappers report about their success and their “snowball model” in teaching OSM at the University of Cape Coast.
  • Simon updated his Contributor Statistics and noticed a spike in new users as Maps.me’s edit feature appeared.
  • The Operations Working Group got access to the database of OSM Forum and moved it to an OSMF server on Saturday. During the move, HTTPS was deployed and all HTTP requests will be redirected to HTTPS. A subforum for Iceland has been created. OWG would like to hand over all forum-related aspects of the administration to a group of volunteers.
  • Roland Olbricht reports that the requests on the overpass API have now been logged from “74.9 percent of the total IPv4 /24 subnets of the entire world”. That’s not exactly three-quarters of the people on the planet, but it’s a lot, and from a lot of different places. A puzzling load peak on Oct 1st is explained by OSM getting well-known among Pokémon Go players. Expecting further growth, he suggests a second server for the API.
  • Jan Marsch, the person behind OSMBuildings, says on Twitter that it “Feels like Mapbox is eating up OSM. Project by project.“. Presumably it’s related to this blog post, although it’s unclear how one 3D building renderer can be threatened by the existence of another. Previously, Mapbox have introduced complementary tools before, like when To-Fix joined the existing Maproulette.

Imports

  • James proposes an import of buildings and addresses in Ottawa, Canada, on the Imports mailing list, after his first attempt was reverted.

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • The OSM blog officially announces about the Swiss SOSM being a local chapter of the OpenStreetMap Foundation. We say congratulations to SOSM!
  • Frederik Ramm, member of the board of FOSSGIS e.V., invites comments on Talk-de mailing list and on German forum if FOSSGIS e.V. should become an official local chapter of OSMF. (Deutsch)

Events

  • On October 15, the State of the Map West Africa took place. Nathalie summarizes her impression of the event.

Humanitarian OSM

  • Pierre Béland has published a website comparing aerial images showing the effect of Hurricane Matthew on Haiti. The “after” images were gathered by UAV and show the damage that the recent hurricane caused.
  • Major parts of Surabaya were inundated by floods this year. In order to minimize the impact, concerted efforts are undertaken. This calls for collectively updating the city’s base map data remotely, which is crucial to support the creation of an accurate contingency plan in the unfortunate case of disaster.
  • More discussion about the overlapping tasking managers in Haiti: An email by Rod Bera to the HOT mailing list explains why a second tasking manager for humanitarian mapping is required. According to him, the main problem is that tasks.hotosm.org is under the exclusive control of HOT. Blake Girardot denies that, and invites everyone to co-operate over a public Slack channel.

Maps

  • NOSOLOSIG, a Spanish Geo-Blog, wrote a short blog (automatic translation) about Multimaps (automatic translation). Javier Jiménez Shaw, a Spanish software engineer who lives and works in Berlin, has combined many historical, topographic, satellite and road maps. Map enthusiasts can enjoy maps from seven countries, which are in overlay, synchronized or tangent. BTW a nice tutorial to explain the buttons on the right side.

switch2OSM

  • The Russian city Kashira uses an OSM map for its new information point.

Open Data

  • GoGeomatics Canada Magazine interviewed Ervin Ruci who has been collecting postal codes in Canada using crowdsourcing since 2005. In 2011, Canada Post sent him a cease and desist letter, and sued him and his company for copyright infringement. Canada Post discontinued court proceedings in 2012. Ervin Ruci talked about that at SotM 2014.

Software

  • With Christmas coming up in two months, OsmAnd can show as overlay Christmas markets, Christmas trees and other Christmas POIs.
  • GaiaGPS is now able to upload tracks directly to OSM.

Programming

  • User -karlos- reported again about his work on a 3D renderer.
  • Mapzen published Version 1.0 of their Tilelayer with worldwide elevation data.
  • User Marqqs introduces his new geocoder osmgeoref on a wiki page.
  • The new NVMe server “karm” has been the primary API instance since October 23, as announced by the OWG via Twitter. Its IO load has reduced from 90 percent to 3 percent since the change.

Statistik der meisten Edits Earthquake in Italy – please map in Italy 1 | OSM Tasking Manager – Wikimedia Italia

About us

  • The OpenStreetMap Foundation is seeking donations to finance the Foundation’s expenditures in 2017. The fundraising drive though, has only raised 42,000 euros of the target 70,000 euros after a few weeks.

Mapping

  • User Bharata from Mapbox writes about the usage of the offset database while aligning roads in Taiwan.
  • The slave databases of the OpenStreetmap API experienced replication delays on Tuesday and Wednesday. This caused difficulties to editors who when editing write to the master database but then read from a slave which might be up to 10 hours out of date, causing spurious editing conflicts.
  • On MapRoulette, there are seven new tasks of the project Zebrastreifen-Safari (automatic translation). This project is validating automatically detected pedestrian crossings in Switzerland.
  • Thomas Skowron argues that the syntax of opening_hours=* is overly complex.
  • Sven Geggus, the maintainer of the German OSM-style, has started a discussion about the rendering of country names. He proposed a correction of all country names into official languages of the respective countries instead of English names.
  • Richard Welty suggests the creation of a new tag for car manufacturers’ test tracks instead of highway=racing.

Community

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • The Operations Working Group would like to reduce the load on the tile servers of the OSMF (tile.openstreetmap.org) considerably and asks for comments on the Tile Usage Policy. The discussion also highlighted some interesting statistics about the usage of the tile server by embedding in websites and applications of third parties.
  • The official OpenStreetMap blog announced the new offer of memberships for companies and organizations. It will take effect on Jan 1, 2017.
  • The Operations Working Group wants to document the rules for whitelisting of IP addresses on the tile and API servers and asks for comments.
  • Simon Poole suggests to the OSMF Operations Working Group that “the use policies should contain pointers to the new privacy policy and at least the tile usage policy should recommend a suitable link to fix the map“.
  • On the agenda of OpenStreetMap US are the elections in the second half of November.

Events

Humanitarian OSM

  • [1] Once again, a devastating earthquake hit 6.6 in Central Italy. BBC reported that thousands of people were left homeless and many buildings destroyed. The Italian community has its own tasking manager. Please help map Italy!
  • Amelie Baron of AFP describes the drone mapping in Haiti after the hurricane Matthew. News on the devastation were tweeted by Potentiel3_0 with references to the images of Pierzen.
  • On hotosm.org there is now a showcase to collect and show examples of the impact of humanitarian mapping projects. There was a discussion whether only projects from Hot Inc. should be shown, because it would be used for fundraising.
  • The Atlantic’s Citylab explains the concept of the app MapSwipe, its goals and where it’s headed.
  • The presentations at the HOT Summit 2016 in Brussels are online.
  • Severin Menard writes to the HOT mailing list about his experience during the Hurricane Matthew mapping tasks. He also shares his perspective about using drones, remote mapping, involving local mappers and HOT US Inc.

Maps

  • Candid Dauth presented the completely redesigned version 2 of the FacilMap based on Leaflet.

  • Ash_Crow congratulates Wikidata on its fourth anniversary and talks about his experiences in the project.

Licences

  • Mapbox clarifies who has which rights on a map style for Mapbox GL JS when created with Mapbox Studio. It does not make any demands on styles self-written by its users.

Programming

  • The MapsForge developers forked the Java Vectron Library VTM for Android, iOS and desktop systems of the OpenScienceMap and released version 0.6.0.
  • With GEOS 3.6, the C++ API was changed by GEOS. Jochen Topf as a developer of the library libosmium presented on the dev mailing list, three possible ways how to proceed with the functions to generate GEOS geometries in libosmium.

PIC World Map in Dymaxion Projection 1 | Sérgio’s blog, the file to print, cut, fold glue and have fun

Mapping

Community

  • The Spanish community plans to send welcome messages to new mappers, mainly because of a few unfortunate incidents in the recent past. The beginner’s welcome tool from the Belgian community is being considered. Joost Schouppe presents in his email the text and process. Upshot: This is a very interesting tool for all communities worldwide.
  • [1] Smaprs writes about 2 possibilities to tinker a paper globe with OSM data using dymaxion projection. Sérgio said to weeklyOSM: „… tell me if you see if school kids (or university ones, or adults too) could do it. Would love to see pictures of World in Dymaxion in many scales and colours. We’re studying how to do some script for converting to a soccer ball shaped globe.“
  • Nathalie Sidibé writes a blog about the digital mapping business, Free & Geographic Information System, entitled “CartoCamp de Segou” which was during 3rd to 7th August 2016, in Segou, by OSM_ML in Mali.
  • Lately there have been lot of discussions about mapping quality in the OSM community. Now in the Spanish mailing list there is a complete thread (strap yourself in, there’s a lot to read) about what they call the user “entrollización” on OSM. (Spanisch) (automatic translation)
  • mtc writes a diary entry saying thanks for the good support by provided by the OSM Help Website.
  • A complete article about an OSM Workshop for high school students by the Ghandalf Association in Galicia, who have being giving talks since 2010 about the use of free software and open data. (Spanisch) (automatic translation)
  • RobJN wrote a summary of the progress of the UK Quarterly Project to improve mapping via comparison against government food hygiene rating data. It includes a number of calls for help. The links in the article are recommended for example FHRS/OSM comparison or top 10 districts for completeness and growth.
  • The Russian Forum has voted for new moderators (automatic translation). The results are presented as a table.

Imports

  • The 10th Annual General Meeting of the OpenStreetMap Foundation will be held online in the IRC chat room #osmf-gm on the IRC network irc.oftc.net, at 16:00 UTC on Saturday, 10 December 2016. The agenda can be viewed here: http://wiki.osmfoundation.org/wiki/Annual_General_Meetings/16
  • Frederik explains how the confidentiality of donors to OSMF currently works and asks whether this rule should be limited in the sense of transparency.
  • Janet Chapman suggests on the OSMF-talk mailing list, not only to feed newcomers with a single email, but a “welcome pack to new members with a bit more background information about the foundation, its working groups, how you can get more involved, etc..”. weeklyOSM says: “Damn good idea!”.

Events

  • The program of the SotM LatAM is published. SotM LatAM is happening on the 25th to 27th of November.

Humanitarian OSM

  • EchoScience Grenoble reported about a Missing Maps Mapathon that is going to be held on November 24th by MaptimeAlpes in Grenoble. (French) (automatic translation)
  • Pierre Béland wrote to the HOT mailing list about the situation in Haiti, saying that this major crisis is simply forgotten. Part of the problem is the poor quality of the initial response, due to “Hit and Run” mapathons. Pierre documented this problem in his earlier presentation, which he made with data from the earthquake in Nepal.

Maps

  • On github there is a discussion about switching from http to https for openstreetmap.org by default.

  • Simple Opening Hours is a JavaScript class to parse opening hours and according to its author, it only supports the human readable parts of the opening hours syntax.
  • The size of the OSM-Database is now 6.1 TB. Tom Hughes has published a detailed list of index and table sizes.
  • User Zecke is asking for help on the Overpass mailing list. He would like to install a local Overpass instance. It looks like, that while solving his issue, the documentation has been updated.

Detail of the OSRM debug card OSRM’s debug map shows penalties given for turns. 1 | © OpenStreetMap Contributors CC-BY-SA 2.0

About us

  • The OSM Foundation needs € 70.000 to cover its core operational expenses. Last Friday, Mapbox announced that they would “match the next ‎€10,000 in contributions“ to achieve the target. With €18,028 left to achieve the target, consider donating to keep OSM running.

Mapping

  • Adrien Pavie introduces Pic4Carto, a website that combines recent pictures from Mapillary, Flickr and Commons, so mappers can easily refer to pictures from these three sites. He has also made the source code available.
  • CartInnov (automatic translation), the collaborative and open map of the innovation actors in the French-speaking world.
  • [1] OSRM’s debug map (we reported earlier) now also shows penalties given for turns.
  • Markus Schalke calls for discussion of the bird tower proposal in the tagging mailing list.
  • Daniel wants a tag for “not-a-roundabout” so that routing software can give better instructions. He explains here in more detail why is this needed.
  • On the tagging mailing list, Warin proposed a more detailed mapping of football (soccer) fields.
  • Joost Schouppe submitted a tag for dog toilets. There are various suggestions for the exact name of the tag.
  • James opened a task in the Canadian task manager to incorporate wikidata into OSM. User LogicalViolinist explains in his blogpost why this is important (but there is significant controversy). Also please read about what James writes about the is_in: tag.
  • User Tbsprs tweeted about OpenLevelUp! – a great tool for the representation of indoor mapping. For example, here is the multi-level Birmingham New Street Station.

Community

  • The Dutch Computerworld magazine reports (automatic translation) about four projects that are “almost broke”. OSM, being one of them, has not yet reached its donation goal of €70,000. Time to donate!
  • There is a discussion over at OpenStreetMap Carto’s GitHub repository (where the ‘standard’ style that appears on the openstreetmap.org website is developed), asking why there are relatively few contributors, and why some features (such as wayside shrines) take so long to appear.
  • Gonzalo Pérez, from OSM Argentina, facilitated a workshop on mapping and collaborative practices. It was organized by Santalab (in Argentina, not at the North Pole) and the Centre for Media Studies, in the city of Rosario, Santa Fe.
  • Santiago Crespo reports that the Spanish community is now also using “osm-welcome-Belgium“, the tool created by the Belgian community (actually M1dgard). Pascal Neis has already noticed the new users on his twitter feed.
  • “kaxtillo” wrote a diary entry summing up (translation) the involvement of OSM in Colombia with the 3rd “citizen innovation lab”, (translation) whose aims were to promote citizen innovation in Latin America in order to foster social transformation, democratic governance, and social, cultural and economic development.
  • “Bike parking is not a problem, but part of the solution: Amsterdam’s 265K car places could allocate 2.1M bikes!” So says the “bike professor” from the Urban Cycling Institute. He explains (automatic translation) how to solve this, illustrated with an OpenStreetMap map.
  • Pascal Neis has updated his analysis of the activity of OpenStreetMap members for this year.

Events

  • OSM Geography Awareness Week (OSMGeoweek on Github) aims to celebrate geography and OSM with over 120 events worldwide. This complements National Geographic Society’s initiative with many local and humanitarian mapping projects.

Humanitarian OSM

  • The “Red Cross climate center” in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, reported about another workshop with several partners. This involved plans for a second phase with the support of OSM in the creation of development plans, flood protection and infrastructure development.
  • HOT is asking the community feedback on choosing the platform that would be the best to host activities such as live training. Please fill the three-question questionnaire!
  • A mapathon hosted in Ivry-sur-Seine (Paris, France) with the help of cartONG brought together mappers and members of the local Malian community. Together, they mapped the area of Dianguirdé, Mali, adding some 337 km of roads.

switch2OSM

  • The French Ministry for the Environment, Energy and the Sea is organizing a hackathon under the name #HackRisques. The aim of the mapathon is to prevent natural hazards. In addition to Meteo France, the OSM community is also invited to participate – as Sebastian Dinot reported on OSM-talk-fr.

Software

  • Thomas Konrad published the austriaaddresshelper, a Java OpenStreetMap Editor (JOSM) plugin which automatically assigns addresses to an object. It uses the BEV Address Data Reverse Geocoder which uses the address data sets released by the Bundesamt für Eich- und Vermessungswesen (BEV) in Austria.
  • Frederik Ramm is in a look out for developers/admins, who would be interested in building and maintaining an OSM Sandbox around the test OSM APIs.
  • OSRM release candidate for version 5.5 features a bunch of interesting changes. It now supports oneway=reversible vs. oneway=alternating tagging, directions for the destination tag and implements new heuristics for turn angles.
  • On the talk list, Martijn van Exel describes how OpenStreetView has been asked to change its name “by a well-known company with a similarly-named product“. As ever anonymaps is Quick to Draw its own conclusions about Google’s “evenhanded respect for trademarks”.

Programming

  • Mapzen describes the background of the programming of the Tangram engine with new features to import, among other things, the new TRON 2.0 styles.
  • Railnialtial presents the Python library OSMnx. It was written during his dissertation, and allows the visualisation and analysis of street data.

Did you know …

  • … Liberland, a new “country” which nobody is allowed to enter? Hacker News has more details about this and Wikipedia explains the border conflict that lead to its “creation”.
  • Framacarte, using uMap as part of an initiative to de-Google-ify the Internet?
  • … the sustainable Comenius project MychOSM? It shows a lot of possiblities on how to use OSM in schools.

OSM in the media

  • The Genealogical Society of Ireland reported on its last edition (PDF – see page 2): “In early October the completion of the project to draw all the townlands on the Island of Ireland was celebrated in Berlin. It was on the occasion of the annual world-wide conference of the volunteer driven OpenStreetMap community”. “townlands.ie” is of course the main web site.

Other “geo” things

  • Archdaily reports about David Rumsey’s Map Collection of high resolution maps (we reported earlier) which now features more than 71,000 maps to download.
  • Apple has been granted a US patent for augmented reality maps.
  • Hajime Narukawa, a Japanese architect has come up with a map projection, such that a printed map can be fold up into a perfect 3D globe. For his work he received the coveted Good Design Award. We presented last week the OSM Dymaxion Projection by the Brazilian architect Sérgio A. J. Volkmer.
  • Real-Time GPS tracking of scavenging gulls pinpoints illegal waste dumping.
  • Google will retire Map Maker on March 31st 2017, moving the POI editing functions to Google Maps, and users won’t be allowed to edit geometries anymore. We wonder if this would be another boost for our community.
  • In an effort to enable and support machine learning using satellite imagery, DigitalGlobe, CosmiQ Works and NVidia are launching the SpaceNet Challenge. In the first round, the challenge is to automate the extraction of 2D building outlines from satellite images. Prizes worth $34,500 to be won.
  • Surveillance under Surveillance is a project which visualizes crowd sourced data on surveillance. The project, currently available in German, English and Spanish, is looking (automatic translation) for translators to expand it to other languages.
  • Google Street View vs Mapillary: Greg Oates, Skift Digital, describes – using examples – the objectives, opportunities and the know-how of the two counterparts.
