OpenStreetMap 13th Aniversary mapathon in Latin America here: Mexiko 1 | © Mariam Gonzalez – Openstreetmap México – Geochicas 😉

About us

  • We are always looking for people to help us improve our newsletter so it can get out faster, have more depth and coverage, and generally improve it for our readers, like you. Please join our team by contacting us now, it’s fun! 😉

Mapping

  • Pierre Béland noted on Twitter that winter roads on frozen rivers, lakes and seas (ice_road=yes) are shown as normal roads in all renderers. At least 7,600 of these roads are mapped on OpenStreetMap, for example in Tuktoyaktuk.
  • Andreas Bürki shared his grievances on the Talk-ch mailing list about a mapper, who deleted separately mapped sidewalks in Bern. Thus, he encounters a discussion about the mapping of sidewalks.
  • Brian May calls on Talk-US mailing list “all TIGER fix up junkies” to focus on the coastal areas of Texas. If you want to join please read the tips on Reddit and the OSM wiki.
  • The satellite image layer “Esri World Imagery” can now also be used as a data source for mapping and is available in the OSM editors. See also entry in the ArcGIS blog. In Germany it contains imagery of Rhineland-Palatinate, Thuringia and North Rhine-Westphalia, for which permission for use had not previously been granted (translation).
  • [1] User mapeadora writes a detailed report of the mapathon for the 13th anniversary of OSM Latin America. Further information can be found on the event’s wiki page (in Spanish).
  • Satoshi (user nyampire) published an idea for review workflow using OSMCha. He asks for feedback. Note that current version of the iD editor does indeed support “review requested”.
  • Jochen Topf looks back in his blog at his efforts to remap and fix “old style” multipolygons.

Community

  • Some users of the German OSM Forum expressed surprise (de) (automatic translation) about some of the recipients of the OSM Awards. There was also a suggestion that people who do work in OSM without getting paid (volunteers) should get awards, rather people for whom OSM is a “day job”. Everyone’s favourite source of OSM snark Anonymaps says something similar in a tweet.
  • Steve Bennett wrote an article about how easy it is (or isn’t) to combine the various vector tile options when creating a new vector map for OpenStreetMap.

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • The user “chdr” added and modified about 75,000 street names in various countries. Artefacts (in some cases actual source tags) show that some information came from Google Maps and the contributor refused to confirm the source of the data. Frederik Ramm from the Data Working Group announced the redaction of these changes on the Talk and Talk-US mailing lists. A large discussion ensues about where it would be possible to replace these names with data from acceptable sources, how that should take place and whether that is even possible with a “redaction”.
  • On 24. August a public meeting of the OSMF board took place. They talked about the application of the FOSSGIS e.V. to be a local chapter in Germany and other topics. The minutes have not been published in total yet.

Events

  • Geofabrik extends an invitation to an OpenStreetMap Hack Weekend on 21th and 22th October in Karlsruhe. You can sign up on the OSM wiki.
  • On the Swiss mailing list (de) Stefan Keller suggests keeping a date in your diary for the Open Tourism Data Hackdays on 27/28th October 2017 in Arosa. It is organised by the OpenData club and the SOSM, the Swiss Association of OpenStreetMap. There will also be a mapping party.
  • OSM and FOSSGIS e.V. will be present at the Intergeo 2017 from September 26th to 28th at the “Berlin Exhibition Grounds” (Hall 5, Booth B5.044).
  • Shunnosuke Shimizu created a short video of SotM 2017 in Aizu-Wakamatsu (Japan), that ends with the invitation for all to join SotM 2018 in Milan (Italy).

Humanitarian OSM

  • If you are a HOT contributor or in other way related to it, Laura Salzmann asks that you complete a small survey to help in her dissertation “Investigating motivations of humanitarian OpenStreetMap contributors and NGO use of contributed data”. The ultimate goal is to compare the expectations from within the project to those of NGOs that go on and use the maps that we produce.
  • The Dutch Red Cross calls with the headline “Save people from your chair” to help with OSM.

Maps

  • Christoph Hormann, a OSM-Carto maintainer, looks back on the last year of its development and ventures into the future.

switch2OSM

  • OSM user “apm-wa” (who in his “day job” is the US Ambassador to Turkmenistan) is happy that two taxi companies in Ashgabat are now using OpenStreetMap. The official app of the Asian indoor and martial arts games, which takes place in September in Ashgabat, will also use OSM maps.
  • opendigitalradio.org uses a Leaflet map to show the location of their local DAB (Digital Audio Broadcas) + stations equipment that are already in use.

Open Data

  • In Sweden public authorities are changing to the license model CC-0. They start with TK50 satellite fotos (including height data), street register and others. (automatic translation)

Licences

  • The board of the OSM Foundation has accepted the Geocoding Guidelines. The guideline explains how the OSMF interprets the Open Database License 1.0 in relation to geocoding.

Software

  • Vincent Privat invites Osmose developers on Dev-fr to view JOSM tickets and discuss: 1) Export of the Validation Messages to a xml/json file and 2) Develop a Standalone JOSM Validator (jar) in command line without GUI.
  • road.cc introduces “Bike Citizens” as their Cycling app of the week. The free OSM-based bicycle router may be upgraded by city maps or route suggestions. User comments speak of some odd routing behaviour though.

Programming

  • User -karlos- does not want to add new features to his 3D renderer OSM go any more.
  • Wille Marcel, author of OSMCha, suggests on GitHub to add an API for user blocks to the OSM API.
  • User fannymonori writes the final report for her Google Summer of Code project, that consisted in implementing an OpenGL-based renderer for the libosmscout library.
  • User SomeoneElse wrote an OSM diary entry explaining how to use a Microsoft Azure cloud server to render OpenStreetMap map tiles.

Releases

Since version 2.4.0 the web-based editor can also access the ESRI World Imagery layer. Also some speed-ups and new presets were part of the update.

Other “geo” things

  • Astun Technology announced via Twitter that all those who missed Steven Feldman’s very humorous presentation on #FakeMaps at FOSS4G can now catch up on it on the Internet.
  • Andy Mabett draws attention to a proposal of a new HTML element for easier embedding of maps into web sites.
  • aharvey shows its bicycle setup for 360 degree Mapillary photos.
  • Still demand for it? Apparently, there is – Garmin issues the eighth version of the “Garmin Topo Germany PRO” at a price of 129.00 €. Hint: Map white spots to get them coloured 😉

screen shot OpenStreetMap Inspector, objects without important tags

The OpenStreetMap Inspector now shows nodes and ways which do not have “important” tags. 1 | data OpenStreetMap contributors, ODbL, image CC-BY-SA OpenStreetMap and Geofabrik

About us

  • We are always looking for people to help us improve our newsletter so it can get out faster, have more depth and coverage, and generally improve it for our readers, like you. Please join our team by contacting us now, it’s fun! 😉

Mapping

  • [1] In the tagging view of the OpenStreetMap Inspector there is a new layer with tagging errors. The routing view now contains, once more, another error layer which shows ‘sources’ and ‘sinks’ of oneway roads which are either unreachable or have no return route.
  • The Flemish community in Belgium wishes to explicitly tag maxspeed on all highways. André Picard says this goes against existing usage in the country where a special relation of type default is used to provide information on a range of default values. He objects to the original wiki proposal page being marked as “abandoned”. Clifford Snow remarks that the documentation on the wiki is inconsistent and difficult to understand.
  • A discussion began on the Tagging mailing list around the usage of the tag shop=fashion as opposed to the tag shop=boutique considering that the latter has more uses.
  • The MapGive initiative of the U.S. Department of State provides the OSM community satellite image material of the region Ashgabat (Turkmenistan), which was recorded in the August 2017 (30 cm resolution).
  • Frederik Ramm started (de) (automatic translation) a discussion on the German OSM Forum if we really need all boundary relations or if some of them should be deleted. As an example, he points to a segment of the River Rhine which belongs to 29 relations.
  • Sam Guilford from YouthMappers has published a small article about POSM and Mapeo.
  • Voting on the proposal Language Information will be open until 13th September. The proposal wants to introduce the tag language:<key> = <language code> which describes which language a tag <key> = * has.
  • iD has a new feature: “Review requested”. Pascal Neis writes in his blog post how to find these changesets and help the newcomer in his first steps in OSM, such as with links to wiki pages, tags, and map features, good practices, the OSM Forum or the page OSM help. Pascal forgot to mention the mailing lists. 😉

Community

  • Dr. Steffano de Sabbato (Leicester University) asks for guidance to help interpret the mapping of London for his research. He also provides links to some previous preliminary studies.
  • Geospa_gal believes that there’s a need for more women to respond to the survey about gender bias in the OSM, and invites people to participate in order to have more accurate data about the gender situation in the community. Some people on Talk-US mailing list criticize the survey and the (desired) aims.
  • Gardster shares pictures (and videos) from the very well-attended 13th OSM Birthday party held by the Belarus community in Minsk on the 30th of August.
  • Joost Schouppe writes a diary entry highlighting the need of improving interaction between OSM and academic communities.

Imports

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • The minutes of the last OSMF board meeting on August 24 have been completed. The next public meeting will take place on September 21st 21:00 London time.
  • The minutes of the Local Chapters Congress at SotM have been published.
  • There will be elections to the board of the OpenStreetMap Foundation at end of 2017. Frederik Ramm explains what potential candidates should expect and tries to abandon some illusions about being a board member.
  • A meeting of the Engineering Working Group took place on August 29 and the minute is online. The topic was the end of this year’s Google Summer of Code.

Events

  • Edoardo Neerhut writes in the Mapillary Blog about the OSM ecosystem, OSMCha from Mapbox and about the AI assisted road tracing of Facebook in Thailand.
  • The call for papers for the SOTM Latam 2017 is still open! The conference will take place in Lima, Peru, from November 29th to December 2nd.

Maps

  • Stephan Bösch Plepelits, author of OpenStreetBrowser reported in his blog that the pop-ups on the map have been significantly improved. A permalink will be available for the map in the near future.
  • Mapbox announces a modified pricing in its blog. They rolled out pay-as-you-go pricing for their core products like maps, search, and navigation.

Programming

  • Frédéric Rodrigo published his findings on using a Redis database to query OSM objects and discusses performance relative to SQL queries on PostgreSQL. The experiments aim to explore ways of improving the heavy computations of the Osmose QA-tool.
  • Maripo Goda works on a JOSM plugin which warns mappers if they move a node over a large distance.

Releases

The new release of Mapbox Navigation SDK for iOS v0.7.0 comes with automatic day/night styles, other UI improvements, better compatibility with Amazon Polly, support for multiple legs, more aggressive location snapping, new localizations and much more.

Did you know …

Other “geo” things

  • Accurate maps of crops in both Germany and England have been produced using Remote sensing data from the ESA’s Sentinel-2 satellite. The English dataset is published under an open licence.
  • Thames Valley Records Centre (TVERC) are using non-open data on building age to create a model of potential bat roosting sites.
  • A nice article by Kartin Humai shows how to go on a “time travel” with Mapillary. 😉
  • Stefano Cudini has a demo version of his open source ‘geo-social’ platform KeplerJs online. KeplerJs combines the features of social networks with geographical facts and uses OpenStreetMap among others.

  • Contributor dega reports (FR) on talk-ca that Telenav added nonexistent roads. These planned roads were stopped by Environment Canada. In the same changeset, motorway temporary deviations have also been added. These problems seems to be related to interpretation of road navigation data coming out of some softwares. To be use very carefully!
  • User GOwin reports about HailHydra(nt)!, an initiative he launched in the Davao region (Philippines), in collaboration with the local fire officials. Its goal is the mapping of fire hydrants, fire stations and volunteer brigades. The tools used during the mapathon were OSMHydrant and OsmAnd.
  • Giacomo Servadei continued to work on the PT_Assistant plugin for JOSM, which makes editing public transport on OpenStreetMap a lot more convenient. It provides visual feedback, validation and some extra tools. Now, the plugin also reports to the user any problems with continuity in hiking and bicycle-route relations. And it helps with adding forward/backward roles where these routes fork.
  • User praktikyadav from Mapbox reported in his user blog a major update to the Mapbox satellite-imagery base-map layer.
  • The proposed feature, Language Information, (we reported earlier), has been rejected.
  • Simon Poole reported on a major update of the editor presets for suggesting the names of shops and other branded businesses. He requests that users check the suggestions in non-Latin alphabets, as many more have been added.

Community

  • Visit downtown Tarija, a Bolivian city (South America) with images you can use to improve maps.
  • Marena Brinkhurst tweets saying Imagining 2020 headlines about a poster stating ‘No maps are missing’. Let’s hope that it will be added «They are exact and of great quality».
  • Dave Corley rebooted the idea of an OSM Ireland chapter.
  • Yuri Astrakhan starts the name search for his Wikidata+OSM SPARQL query service. The JOSM Wikipedia plugin was extended. Once installed, you can download data using a SPARQL query, combining conditions based on OSM and Wikidata details.
  • Jo is looking for students with knowledge of Java and the OSM data model. Interest in route relations would be an advantage.
  • This month’s “Mapper of the Month” in Belgium is Jonathan Beliën aka jbelien. Read the interview.

Imports

  • Statistic Canada hosted a mapping workshop during the HOT Summit 2017. They presented the results of the Pilot project with the local OSM community in Ottawa-Gatineau to import building footprints. The aim is to map every Canadian building by 2020. StatCan counts on municipalities to release building footprints as Open Data.
  • Vincent Frison plans to import building heights in Nice, France, following the same process he used for Paris two years ago. He asks for feedback on Talk-FR and on the French forum.

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • On the Talk mailing list, the discussion on the draft directive about the use of the trademark “OpenStreetMap” (“Trademark Policy”) has resumed (we reported). Among others, this directive concerns those whose projects are based on “OpenStreetMap” or “OSM”.

Events

  • The detailed program of SotM-US 2017 in Boulder, Colorado has been published on the event’s website. Mark the dates: October 20th to 22nd!
  • SotM-Asia 2017 will take place in Kathmandu, Nepal on September 23-24. The chosen theme is “from creation to use of OSM data”: the increasing amount of available data about the Asian continent needs further ideas and tools able to process them. More details on registration, location and schedule are available on the event’s website.

Humanitarian OSM

  • Daniel Mietchen writes some detailed notes, including feedback and critiques, whilst using MapSwipe for the first time.
  • [1] In Mexico, mappers and reviewers are still needed. For current cause: new earthquake, new task.
  • Martin Noblecourt reminds that satellite imagery is not necessarily correctly aligned, and shows how you can deal with the problem.
  • On Talk-US, Jeffrey Ollie mentions that Digital Globe has published post-Harvey and Irma images, promptly made available as tiles by OpenAerialMap.

Maps

  • kocio-pl suggests in a pull request to add boundary=protected_area to OSM Carto.
  • math1985 wants to darken the colour of farmlands in OSM Carto and submitted a pull request for that purpose.

switch2OSM

  • Pierre Béland (aka pierzen) reports on Talk-CA that the “Canadian Press” agency releases OpenStreetMap maps via the MapBox services. These maps should appear in the in various Canadian newspapers subscribed to the Canadian Press.

Open Data

  • The provincial administration of New Brunswick (Canada) has donated its aerial photos to ESRI.

Software

  • On the Talk mailing list, Nicolas Guillaumin seeks a new maintainer for OSMTracker for Android.
  • StephaneP’s OSM diary shows usage of low-cost GPS RTK with open-source software RTKLIB to create an RTK base station and obtain a few centimeters precision with correction of the satellite signal. To learn more, you can ask questions in the diary.

Programming

  • The OpenRouteService backend is now available under the Apache license on Github. As this is a GraphHopper fork, the ORS was eventually converted from its own implementation to a GraphHopper-based system in recent years.
  • During his Google Summer of Code, Bogdan Afonins has developed many improvements for the search and download dialog of JOSM.

Releases

  • OSM Carto 4.3.0 fixed mostly bugs.

Did you know …

OSM in the media

  • The New York Times published an article about the humanitarian needs after Hurricane Irma. The maps showing the information are OSM based.
  • The magazine We Demain reports that the French organisation “Hackers Against Natural Disasters (Hand)” has sent equipment worth €30,000 to the area affected by Irma Saint-Martin and Saint-Barthélémy. Among other things, drones were delivered for mapping. (fr) (automatic translation)

Other “geo” things

  • Nothing for nerds, but a nice advertising video for the GraphHopper API.
  • OSM is also frequently used for visualisation of geographically relevant content: here in the macroplastics project of the University of Oldenburg, Germany.
  • Mercedes-Benz decided to use the proprietary and patented What3words geocoding method in their navigation aids. These codes must not be entered into the OSM database due to their restrictive licence policy!

SotM_Asia_2017

State of the Map Asia 2017 took place in Kathmandu last weekend (23-24 Sep 2017). 1

Mapping

  • Pierre Béland tweets his analyses on OSM Contributors profiles vs Contributions (ie objects edited) based on the HDYC changesets classification.
  • Ciarán Staunton wonders why the Bing Imagery in southern Africa has suddenly been re-aligned. A Microsoft employee makes it clear that the new images have not yet been adjusted to the offset
  • Williaug GC initiates a discussion on the tagging mailing list with the question, whether shop=door should be replaced by craft=window_construction.
  • Mark Bradley asks in the Tagging mailing list on how to tag “agricultural centers”. Discussion ensues as there are multiple aspects to be considered.
  • Ilya Zverev shares a proposal for Metro Mapping, with a hope to have a uniform way of mapping these features. Comments welcome.
  • On the Tagging mailing list, SwiftFast proposes the tags slogan=* for slogans and logo=* for links to a company’s logo on Wikimedia Commons. Discussion threads: slogan, logo.
  • Simon Poole asks for opinions about the use of the tags shop=appliance vs shop=electronics.
  • Selfish Seahorse started the discussion about swimming pool facilities mapping to clarify the tagging of the various cases.
  • “westnordost” (the person behind the StreetComplete mobile phone app) started a discussion (de) (automatic translation) about tagging cycleway where cyclists can go in both directions on a street that is oneway to motor vehicles.
  • Maripo published a new JOSM plugin “EasyPresets”, which helps with easy creation of your own personal tagging presets.
  • Leigh Dodds writes about mapping wheelchair accessibility in the centre of Bath.
  • Osmose checks now, whether maxspeed=* and source: maxspeed=* match and complains about e. g. maxspeed=30 in combination with source:maxspeed=DE:urban, because 50 km/h are allowed in Germany.
  • User erkinalp proposes a new tagging system to unify existing tags for all kinds of educational institutions. The new system would introduce some new tags but also change many existing tags.
  • User erkinalp wants to propose a new tag for magnetic levitation trains. The tracks they use are incompatible with conventional rails.

Community

  • Adrien Pavie has created Whatosm, a tool that, depending on the difficulty level, desired time, and whether you want to map outdoors or at home shows different possibilities of how to contribute to OpenStreetMap. The source code can be found here, and you can help with the translation of the tool into different languages here.
  • The OSM blog published the results of the projects related to OpenStreetMap of this year’s Google Summer of Code.

Imports

  • User GeoKitten asks for help on the mailing list “imports” for importing building data in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. This member is at the first stage of an import, while it’s good to disseminate that an import is in the works, it would be important to follow up as the import progresses. This might bring in more people to help this member and also be instructive about the many details of doing something this complicated.
  • Vincent Frison has the intention to import building heights in Nice. More detailed information on the project can be found in the wiki page.
  • Vivek Bansal asks for reviews of the San Jose, California sidewalk (pavement) import.
  • To bring in line the 40,000 wikidata tags that do not fit the Wikipedia URLs Yuri Astrakhan suggests to resolve the problem with a script. On the mailing list, Osmose and MapRoulette are mentioned as alternatives which would involve the community.Yuri Astrakhan’s second post leads yet again to a longer discussion about missing wikidata tags and if they should be added automatically. In the mean time Yuri started a mechanical edit and received a bunch of complaints due to the bad quality of his edits.

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • The data working group asks mappers to participate in an opinion survey, concerning a policy for organized and paid mapping. On the talk mailing list there is a discussion. Christoph Hormann explained in his blog, why such a policy is needed.
  • Michael Spreng asks for feedback from the OSM Foundation members on the Membership Working Group’s proposal of the Membership Fee Waiver Program.
  • Dorothea from OSMF writes about joining the OpenStreetMap Foundation to help shape the future of OpenStreetMap. She emphasizes on this being an opportunity to be a voice in the governance of the Foundation – the organization which owns and maintains the servers, holds the license, runs the State of the Map, coordinates local chapters. Sign-up now!

Events

  • [1] State of the Map Asia 2017 took place in Kathmandu, Nepal over the last weekend. It was a conference that got the OSM Asian community together in one place. There were 15 country presentations (1) which highlighted the current state of OSM in their own nations. Followed by some amazing talks on different OSM tools, research around OSM data, Nepal earthquake and the lessons learnt from that, a government panel discussing the co-relation between data, government and so much more.#SotMAsia was one of the top trending hashtags in Nepal. You can look up photos from the event here and here. Some of the presentations were livestreamed, find them here.
  • State of the Map Asia 2018 is announced! This conference will be hosted in Bangalore, India.
  • Prior to the start of State of the Map Asia in Nepal, there was a preconference mapathon held at the conference venue which aimed at mapping all the trails and buildings of Western Nepal.
  • Launched by the association OpenStreetMap Cameroon, the State of the Map (SotM) Cameroun or National Geomatics Days announced by Jacques Landry Atangana via Facebook.
  • All videos of the presentations at SotM 2017 in Japan are online. A link to the slides for each presentation is also included.

Another task was opened in connection with the earthquake in Mexico. Advanced mappers are welcome to help here.

Maps

  • Stephan Bösch Plepelits reports on his blog, that the OpenStreetBrowser now shows excerpts from articles and images from Wikimedia Commons in the detail view. Wikipedia is found under the ‘Special’ menu item.

Licences

  • SwiftFast asks the Legal-Talk mailing list for opinions on licence issues when publishing simple scripts on the OSM Wiki.

Software

  • Saikat Maiti points out a new Android application called Disaster Reporting System to gather information regarding natural disasters.
  • Frederic Rodigo announces on the mailing list Talk that Osmose-QA is experimenting by adding missing sign tags on OSM from Mapillary detected signs on pictures.

A map of unmapped places on OSM

A map of unmapped places around the world 1 | Copyright © Pascal Neis (neis-one.org) – Map data © OpenStreetMap contributors

Mapping

  • A new task on MapRoulette. Help clean up non-existing schools from the GNIS US 2009 import.
  • Florian Lainez announced proudly on the French mailing list, that in Accra, the main city of Ghana 320 minibus lines with stops are now available in OSM thanks to Jungle Bus. A week after he asked for help with rendering on a website, the rendering of Mapanica was adapted and now you can see all the lines here.
  • The discussions about large-scale modifications of the wikidata=* tag started by Yuri Astrakhan (we reported in our last issue) are still going on and have been amended by further discussion topics and threads:
  • We reported in September Statistics Canada workshop in Ottawa to present a pilot project with the local OSM community to map all buildings in Ottawa. This time on Talk-ca StatCan, propose a goal for the OSM community to add all buildings in Canada by the year 2020. Some contributors on the talk-ca list expressed the opinion that this goal is not realistic with the difficulty to negotiate licenses with municipalities and without a clear engagement from StatCan.
  • Martijn van Exel from Telenav asks on Talk-ca mailing list how to tag bilingual destination signs (e.g. “Rue Regent St”).with key destination:street
  • User Gorm presents a new JOSM plugin: Roundabout Expander, to help mapping these features from a single node.
  • Mateusz Konieczny proposes to generate lists of objects that need our attention, like statues referring directly to a person instead of using subject:wikipedia/subject:wikidata tags or OSM objects for which Wikidata has a web url, that can be added to OSM as website tag.
  • Voting is open on the Fire Hydrant Extension wiki page proposal until October 15th. It adds new tags but also replaces existing ones.

Community

  • Matthew Darwin proposes to the folks on Talk-ca mailing list to meet at State of the Map US (20th–22nd October) and discuss about founding a local chapter of OSMF.

Imports

  • Enock Seth Nyamador wants to import 216 District Borders into OSM and asks for advice.
  • The buildings import for Denver Metropolitan area is ready. Russell Deffner wrote an update at the import mailing list. At the wiki, you can read about the import in detail.

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • Tom Hughes confirms on OSM-dev that the OSRM routing service is not available anymore. The demo server on osm.org was provided by Mapbox and has been put down without any prior notice. There is an ongoing discussion in this pull request about commercial services and various possibilities around using them.
  • Joost Schouppe started on osmf-talk the discussion about sponsored OSM Foundation memberships with the expressed objective to help increase diversity among members.
  • Already participated in the survey of the DWG? (we reported last week).

Events

  • Rob Nickerson one of the organisers of the State of Map shared a budget for a generic large State of the Map events, this will be a useful reference for organising similar events in the future.

Humanitarian OSM

  • The DailyMail reports how the Nigerian youth “armed with smartphones and boots” mapped flooded areas in Niamey.
  • The developers of Ushahidi, a tech platform for social activism, attended the HOT summit 2017 and share their experience in a blog post.

Maps

  • [1] Pascal Neis updated his map of unmapped places around the world.
  • Ilya Zverev wrote a script to inventorying railway=subway stations in major cities around the world for use in MAPS.ME. which means it will be the first app that uses solely OSM data for routing passengers. Michael Reichert informs that Geofabrik also develops a Public Transport version 2 validator.
  • There was an issue raised in help.openstreetmap.org about a delay in updates between OpenStreetMap and Strava maps which uses Mapbox. Mapbox states that they can’t guarantee a timeframe for the edits to appear but they appreciate everyone’s contributions and are continuing to work hard to make sure their maps are up-to-date.
  • The University of Heidelberg has produced a map “osmlanduse.org” that analyses OSM landuse in an area (and also uses some remote sensing data). An introduction is here and the map is here.

Open Data

  • Heise writes (automatic translation) about a proposed EU directive compelling open source platforms to monitor their data for copyright infringements at high expenses.

Software

  • Kort Game, an app for Android and iOS to add missing information to existing objects in OpenStreetMap got published. The app follows a gamification approach that pays out so called Koins for each question answered, and only when a response has been verified by another user, and then is it added to the OSM database. The question remains how such a verification will allow to get edits in rural areas added to OpenStreetMap. The development of Kort happens on GitHub. The translation on Transifex. The Kort Game App is available for Android and iOS. It is already being used – and discussed.

Programming

  • In OSM help forum, karussell, account of the developers of Graphopper routing engine, seeks an answer for the default access values that should be assumed for a ferry, a ford and a barrier when it comes to a routing engine.
  • Chris Whong has written an express.js server that allows to quickly load Mapbox GL styles from any project into the Maputnik Style Editor.

Releases

  • Mapbox Navigation SDK for Android v0.6.0 adds a prebuilt user interface similar to the one in the iOS version

Did you know …

  • … Achituv Cohen’s thesis (PDF) on “Building a Weighted Graph based on OpenStreetMap Data for Routing Algorithms for Blind Pedestrians”?
  • Marble, the online globe for Linux, Mac, Windows and Android with OSM maps?
  • update:WHODIDIT to analyze OpenStreetMap changesets? Ilya recommends a faster fork. 😉

OSM in the media

  • The New York Times reports on “A Mapathon to Pinpoint Areas Hardest Hit in Puerto Rico”.
  • A reddit user shares an animated GIF that shows hurricane Jose predicted path.
  • TV network WCPO reports about a mapping event at Miami university helping to face the hurricane damage in Puerto Rico. OSM is only mentioned in one brief direct quote, though.

Other “geo” things

  • An article in The Guardian reports on the wheelchair accessibility issues of metro networks around the world. The results are discouraging.
  • HOT is searching for a Director of Finance & Administration (Part-Time) to join their senior management team.
  • According to The Guardian, “Google Maps must improve if it wants cyclists to use it”. However, commenting users (apart from some militant pro- and anti-cycling trolls) seem to be managing just fine without it. Cited competitors such as CycleStreets, Map.Me are not clearly identified as being part of the OSM Ecosystem.
  • NASA has released a tool that makes it easy to discover satellite images of recent natural phenomena such as hurricanes, forest fires, icebergs, algae blooms, volcanoes and more. Additional information was shared by a developer on Reddit.

About us

  • For more than two years now, TheFive has been developing a content management system called OSMBC (OSM Blog Collector) to meet the special requirements of the editors of weeklyOSM. Without this FOS software, which has been continuously developed since then, it would impossible to publish the blog almost simultaneously in six languages. Thank you TheFive! TheFive has recorded the development in a blog post worth reading and shows that this tool can also be used in other environments easily.

Mapping

  • Harry Wood updates a list of the longest name tags in OSM. There are now 80 more of them than last year.
  • The mailing list tagging discusses whether aeroway=airstrip, which originates from the New Zealand LINZ import, is a legitimate tag or whether you should use aeroway=runway instead.
  • There is a proposal to start distinguishing between public transport bus and coach services. Coach would be a long distance service, that skips most of the stops regular buses would serve and where coach buses with a different level of comfort are used.
  • The feature proposal for sinkholes refinement needs more votes to pass, so voting was extended.
  • Martijn van Exel came up with a better way of tagging center turn lanes, compared to the one he used initially when turn:lanes mapping wasn’t established yet.
  • Martijn van Exel tries to formulate his own definition of highway=trunk in the US. He also notes a few places in Utah where the current tagging doesn’t meet his expectations and is asking for help.
  • User westnordost announced in the German forum that his application StreetComplete will tag from the next version maxspeed:type=*. There is criticism for his “top-down approach”.
  • Discussions about wikidata=* tags are ongoing (which we reported in our two previous issues):
    • Frederik Ramm asks to pause any automated, semi-automated, query-driven, “challenge” driven edits on Wikidata tags in OSM until ongoing discussions have come to an end.
    • People at the German OSM forum discuss (de) (automatic translation) how much Wikidata in OSM is useful.

Community

  • Michal Migurski tweets that OpenStreetMap contributors are listed in the credits of the new feature film Blade Runner 2049.
  • There is a call for membership to join OSMUK to improve OSM in the UK.
  • Around thirty members from Projet EOF association have started this week in 8 different countries (Benin, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, Haiti, Mali, Niger, Senegal and Togo) to implement 15 workshops (each one with a duration of five days) about OpenStreetMap, free Geomatics and open data, in capital and regional cities, 15 mapathons and 21 one-day workshops that will reach at least 150 people during October. Follow it on Twitter through #ActionOifProjetEOF.
  • Rebecca Firth has written (.pdf download, 4.5 MB) an article for the journal – “Science Without Borders: Making the SDGs successful” about OpenStreetMap and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). You can read more about the SDGs on Wikipedia.
  • On October 7, 2007, version 0.5 of the OpenStreetMap API (and thus of the data model) went into production – 0.6 is the current version. Martin Raifer reminds us of this in his user blog and that many API calls, which we find to be commonplace today, were introduced back then.

Imports

  • Christoph Hormann suggests to prefix any tag that was added by a bot with bot: in the key. He hopes this could help us to overcome the problem of the increase of (bad) mechanical edits.
  • Abishek Nagaraj published a paper with the title Information Seeding and Knowledge Production in Online Communities: Evidence from OpenStreetMap. As data of two different stages of age and quality was imported during the TIGER import, he could analyse the effect on so-called information seeding on later contributions. He measured that counties with the older TIGER data got 38.8 % more contributions than the control group and concludes that information seeding is not as beneficial as assumed. There is also a small discussion on the Talk mailing list.

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • The minutes of the IRC meeting of Communications Working Group on 28th September is online.

Events

  • In the town of Chiavari (Liguria, Italy), teams composed by one mapper and one volunteer from the Protezione Civile (Civil Protection, governmental body which deals with exceptional events management) ran a pilot data collecting project (organised by the municipality and the CIMA Foundation) focused on a flood scenario alongside the Rupinaro creek. While the volunteers collected information of the buildings (levels, entrances and flood preparedness), the mappers improved OpenStreetMap adding the details in the area, and photomapped with Mapillary. Local newspapers (automatic translation) and tv stations reported.
  • The DINAcon 2017 conference will take place in Berne on 20th October. It is intended to correspond to the development of open data and digital sustainability. Among other things, there is a session on “Using OpenStreetMap for sitemaps and online stories” with Michael Spreng and Stefan Keller. The DINAcon Awards will also be presented at this event. Simon Poole, Michael Spreng and Stefan Keller are also nominated, representing the community. Simon Poole will also offer a lightning talk.

Maps

  • Nils Vierus has published a map service to find ATMs, thus stimulating a lengthly discussion on the tags used at ATMs and banks network=, operator= and brand=. (de) (automatic translation). Has there ever been a quarterly project on this subject? – Maybe together with communities from other countries? 😉

Software

  • Anton Khorev wrote (ru) (automatic translation) down his opinion in regard with the usability of MAPS.ME as OpenStreetMap editor and the resulting changesets.
  • In a commentary to an old article by Roland about Overpass, user mmd refers to his branch and related test measurements, which suggest a significant reduction in the daily CPU consumption.
  • [1] Richard Fairhurst enhanced turn-by-turn instructions on his website cycle.travel. They now mention node numbers of cycle node networks and the names of mountain passes along the route.

Programming

  • Sven Geggus wonders if the new PostgreSQL 10.0 combined with PostGIS 2.4 brings advantages for an osm2pgsql database. The gain is less for the standard use case, but the increased parallel processing abilities will be beneficial if the database will be used for further analysis.
  • Pascal Neis describes how to conveniently process compressed OSM.PBF files with Java.
  • Christoph Hormann has written a blog post about landcover rendering on small zoom levels.

Releases

  • The stable version of JOSM contains the following major enhancements:
    • Add links to external changeset viewers to the History and Changeset windows
    • Allow users to request feedback when uploading by adding the review_requested=yes changeset tag
    • Automatically uses a proper node count when creating circles depending on the diameter
    • Extends the command line interface parameters
  • OSMaxx has been updated: In addition to the existing formats, the original OSM format (pbf) and the universal shape file of the future, GeoPackage (gpkg), can now be exported.
  • Mapbox shares the release about their support to React Native Mapbox GL and started a rewrite of their current experimental React Native library and released an alpha.
  • … for further information please refer to the OSM Software Watchlist.

Other “geo” things

  • How are urban areas in Australia connected with Sydney. Topi Tjukanov visualized it using QGIS, GraphHopper and OpenStreetMap data.
  • Bollards were often re-used cannon.
  • Luca Mandolesi has collected the previous splash screens of QGIS.

Mapping

  • Michael Reichert aka Nakaner has written a proposal for an “expiration date” of the “Validity of Public Transport Route Relations”. Or at least a date by which the route relation should be looked at again, because changes in the schedules might affect the itineraries or the stops served
  • We reported previously on Yuri Astrakhan’s (in OSM, “nyuriks“) proposition to bring in line “wikidata” and “wikipedia” urls, and the discussion about the mechanical edits that he was doing. Yuri’s now created a “Quick Edit” tool to make mechanical edits in general easier. The consensus of the discussion is that this tool, like other similar ones, is governed by the Automated Edits Code of Conduct. The discussion on the talk mailing list is here.
  • The proposal Fire Hydrant Extension to extend and change the hydrant tagging has missed the required majority with 28 ‘yes’ and 21 ‘no’ votes.
  • You can cast your vote on the proposal River Classification which wants to add the tag river=major/big/small for rivers. See also the discussion on the Tagging mailing list.
  • Mapping “dog droppings bag dispenser”? Not only in Germany. 😉 Alejandro Moreno asks on the Tagging mailing list how to tag a dog droppings bag dispenser with a trash bin.
  • Following complaints from local mappers, the DWG had to block a number of students from Carleton University in Ottawa due to problems with a student mapping project. There is also a discussion on Talk-Ca mailing list about this. There were a number of issues (including duplication), but the main one seemed to be that it was misunderstood that OSM was a set of live data – if something obviously incorrect is added there, it gets fixed, which made it difficult for students to find their individual submissions.
  • Bryan Housel accepted a pull request for the iD editor which adds a tagging preset for place=plot to the iD editor.
  • Christoph Hormann presents in his blog as a replacement for the name=* tag a concept in which only name:*=* is recorded and the boundary relations specify a formatting formula in the form of a tag, which language(s) should be rendered in which order, so that the usual local labeling is achieved.
  • Nakaner writes a longer article in his user blog why he rejected the Proposal Fire Hydrant Extension.
  • Contributor nammala posted an OSM diary entry describing the latest updates to “OSMCha“. OSMCha was originally written by Wille Marcel; see his diary for details of OSMCha’s new API.
  • On the talk mailing list, Dave Swarthout asks for the best practices for tagging oil fields – both the larger “concession” area as well as the actual infrastructure.
  • [1] The quality assurance tool Osmose now uses vector technology to display the markers (Source).
  • Shirini writes about a mini workshop using a TelegramBOT to translate strings for OpenStreetMap.org at Chennai

Community

  • Last week, first camps of Association Projet EOF “OSM, FreeGIS and opendata” program funded by OIF/DFEN got started in Togo and Niger and a one day event (mixing conference, hands on sessions and mapathon) in Benin, Burkina and Ivory Coast. Since 16-October, 10 similar camps of 5 days have been starting in Dakar, Bamako, Kayes, Ouagadougou, Abidjan, Bouaké, Niamey, Cotonou and Adjara/Porto Novo. To be followed on Twitter through #ActionOifProjetEOF.
  • Michelle Thong reports from her participation at the National Day of Civic Hacking in San Jose on 23rd September 2017. She thinks that Code for San Jose (the local Code for America group) could learn from OSM how to attract new contributors.
  • Geochicas, the OSM Latin American women community, launched a survey to learn about the gender gap in the OSM community. User «code elusive» mentions on Diversity-talk mailing list that the survey uses Google but asks for some personal details. You can find the survey written in EN, DE, ES, FR, PT, AL.
  • Contributor GOwin from Philippines, shares the new interesting initiative the local OSM community has come up with to engage, and expand the community of OpenStreetMap contributors in the country. The concept is that the local community will take care of the pizzas, all you need is mapathons, hacking events and most importantly, passion!
  • PierZen wrote an interesting diary entry with a statistical analysis of the OSM userbase, titled The Pulse of OpenStreetMap Contributors.

Imports

  • The San Jose Sidewalk Import (we reported earlier) attracted attention due to its poor quality. Sidewalks were uploaded although they have not been connected to the remaining network. Local mapper Minh, who is one of the primary mappers in the affected area and has mapped
42% of the sidewalks in San Jose by hand before the import started, replies to the mailist list saying he welcomes this import for a broader, long-term effort to improve OSM’s quality in the area.
  • Frederik Ramm starts a discussion on Talk-US mailing list how to deal with the many junk imports from NHD in future.

Events

  • At FOSDEM in February 2018 in Brussels, a yearly event attracting 8000 developers of Free Software, there will be a GeoSpatial room again. If you want to propose a talk, please do.
  • FOSS4G and State of the Map Argentina 2017 is happening from 23rd-28th of October. Here is the detailed scheduled of the event.
  • Miami’s Department of geography’s mapathon unites faculty and students to help provide aid to hurricane in Puerto Rico.
  • This year’s State of the Map CZ will be held at the Czech OpenAlt conference in Brno on 4th and 5th November. (cs) (automatic translation)
There will be talks from companies working with OSM data and a talk on the topics that the Czech OSM community is dealing with currently: hiking (cycle,horse,etc..) trails mapping, landuse and building tracking from official registers, photos for mapping support (PhotoDB) or upgrades to the national OSM portal osmap.cz.

Humanitarian OSM

  • Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team is calling to help provide critical data in response to the Mexico Earthquakes, South Asia Floods, Caribbean Hurricanes and West Pacific Volcano threats.
  • OSM contributor Mapanauta writes a brief about Open Humanitarian Mapping in response of Mexico earthquakes.

Open Data

Software

  • Threema can now share the user’s location via OpenStreetMap. The WLAN location determination has to be added as an authorization for this.
  • With Windy Maps, the creators of mapy.cz have released an OSM-based map app for iOS and Android.

Did you know …

OSM in the media

  • Government Tech writes about the importance of maps during disasters such as hurricane Irma, as they’re a “reliable visualization of areas that are likely to be changed by storms.”

Other “geo” things

  • As part of a deal with Parks Canada, Google is now showcasing Street View images of one of the remotest places on the planet – Quttinirpaaq National Park
  • Japan launched the fourth satellite for its regional QZSS (Quasi Zenith Satellite System). All four satellites are on geosynchronous orbits over the Asia-Oceania Region.
  • Lots of people (including CrunchBase) are reporting that SoftBank has invested $164 million in Mapbox, driven amongst other things by the growth in autonomous vehicles. Mapbox’s own blog reports it here.
  • Wired writes about how the crowdsourced mapping efforts on OpenStreetMap are guiding Puerto Rico’s recovery

SotM US

The group photo of the SotM US 2017 1 | Photo © Justin R. Miller.

About us

  • Christoph aka TheFive has announced that he will no longer support the automated conversion of the calendar (OSMCAL) from the OSM Wiki. The event which triggered TheFive’s announcement was the sudden deletion of a comma. Read more about this on Github and the user discussion page (archive) of the user. The editors deeply regret this, as the calendar is an essential source of information for our readers. We understand that a “quick hack” is not future-oriented and that it can stand in the way of further development and are now looking for someone who can come up with a technical solution for a regular publication of the dates in weeklyOSM. Unfortunately, transferring this information manually to weeklyOSM is not practically feasible.

Mapping

  • User velmyshanovnyi, who had been criticized for the use of the improvable JOSM plugin ScanAerial in Alaska, has started a discussion on the talk-US mailing list
  • How would you tag an amphitheatre, which is made of stairs? Or are these stairs, which are also used as an amphitheatre? This question got asked on Reddit.
  • Stephan Knauß has updated the Loose Ends map, which shows Asian pathways that end in nothingness and where aerial photos would be available to continue drawing. No polygon of the cover is now used anymore, but an algorithm decides whether high-resolution aerial images are available at the respective position. On the webpage, there is also a detailed explanation of what exactly is displayed. After a test phase in Thailand, the coverage has now been extended to other countries in Asia.

Community

  • Stewart writes in the talk-ca mailing list about a possible import initiated by the Statistics Canada – effectively, the Canadian Federal Government. This import comes with a goal of having all the Canadian buildings on OSM by 2020.To begin working on the efforts, Mapbox is collaborating with StatCan in engaging the Canadian universities to participate in the Building Canada 2020 project by hosting mapathons during OSMGeoWeek (November 12-18, 2017).
  • The Italian community takes the first place in the total number of mailing list posts ladder. Some users (automatic translation) wonder if this record is good or if it signals a tendency of bikeshedding instead of more productive activity.
  • Last week, the conference on digital sustainability DINAcon was held in Bern for the first time this year. OpenStreetMap won the DINAcon award in the Open Source Hero category (https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/File:DINAcon_2017_award.jpg). Representing the community Michael Spreng, Stefan Keller and Simon Poole received the award.
  • After the 10 workshops of last week, the members of association “Projet EOF“, supported by “Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie” (OIF) have started with five “OSM, FreeGIS and opendata” workshops from 23rd October in Saint-Louis (Senegal), Lome (Togo) as well as Saint-Marc, Cap-Haitien and Port-au-Prince (Haiti) for 75 participants. Follow this on Twitter through #ActionOifProjetEOF.
  • Seppe Santens is “mapper of the month” for October 2017.
  • The Belgian Community just released the latest issue of their newsletter.
  • “Where is OpenStreetMap in 2017?”, a blog post from Gregory Marler, outlines the state of OpenStreetMap.

Imports

  • Michael writes to import mailing-list about the change in the Facebook’s wiki on AI-Assisted Road Tracing, to which Drishtie from Facebook replies about the change reflecting changes in the process.

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • The next meeting of the OSMF Board of Directors took place on 26th October at 19:00 UTC on Mumble. Main topics are a model agreement on the use of the “State of the Map” brand and the Advisory Board.
  • Frederik Ramm has published the results of the OSMF survey to design a guideline for paid and organized editing.

Events

  • [1] State of the Map US took place in Boulder, Colorado last weekend.
    • the obligatory group photo is on flickr
    • video recordings are on Youtube
    • Jordan Wirfs-Brock shared some of her sketchnotes on Twitter.

Humanitarian OSM

  • Christoph Hormann expresses on the Talk mailing list, his impressions, and feelings, which he has as a non-Hottie for Tasking Manager 3. It is about the use of the word mark OpenStreetMap. The discussion is ongoing.
  • Issue 13 of the HOT Newsletter has been published.
  • Version 3.0 of the HOT Tasking Manager was released. Read the changes here.

switch2OSM

  • The German Federal Agency for Cartography and Geodesy (BKG) uses OpenRouteService (ORS) with OSM data as its own routing service, including the geocoders and isochrone APIs from ORS. In addition, the ORS API has been extended by special functions, e.g. relevant to cycling.
  • The platform for open data of the French government disseminates an article on the topic how to generate hiking routes in France with OSM. (fr) (automatic translation)
  • The Austrian Mail and researchers from TU Graz develop a robot to deliver mail. The ORF (Austrian Broadcasting Corporation) reports (de) (automatic translation) about it and mentions OpenStreetMap as a data source.

Software

  • Toursprung now offers a paid map editor called Printmaps to design printable maps. Output formats are PNG and layered PSD (Photoshop).
  • If your JOSM menu bar is gone after an upgrade to Mac OS High Sierra, you have to change “look and feel” in the JOSM preferences dialog (F12) from “Mac OS” to “Metal”. Other Java applications have the same bug. Oracle claims that it is a bug in Mac OS.
  • The CityZen App, which focuses on privacy, can now also edit OSM data

Programming

  • Mapbox’s iOS SDK v3.7.0 ensures maps for blindness or visual impairment which is fully compatible with the VoiceOver screen reader built into iOS.
  • The JOSM developers work on a stronger modularisation of the programme and declared some classes and methods which are relevant for plugins as deprecated. The affected plugins have to be modified until end of 2017.

Releases

  • OsmAnd 2.8 (for Android) has been released. There are various improvements concerning map markers, favorites and distance measuring.
  • Mapbox Navigation SDK for iOS v0.9.0 comes with a more reliable and customizable user location indicator and improved battery performance.

Did you know …

  • ….OSM-vis? Interesting is the Comparison of the different publication dates of tags in the wiki and in the database by Martin Raifer and Franz-Benjamin Mocnik.

Other “geo” things

Upcoming Events

This service will be discontinued on 01.01.2018, if there is no technical solution for a regular publication of the dates in weeklyOSM. If you want to help/can help to maintain the service, contact us on blog [at] openstreetmap [dot] de.

Mapping

  • [1] Geofabrik announced a revision of the public transport views in OpenStreetMap Inspector on their blog. Now, they show validator issues for Public Transport v2 route relations.
  • Simon Poole suggests (de) (automatic translation) the removal of note=* tags from carsharing provider “Mobility”‘s stations – these tags currently ask mappers not to modify these objects.
  • Frederik Ramm of the Data Working Group has deleted numerous POIs or removed their description tag in the last few days, on the suspicion of spammy edits performed by Search Engine Optimization (SEO) “sock-puppets”. There are several changeset discussions [1] [2] [3] [4] regarding Frederik’s changes. The “algorithm” for finding these POIs underwent some changes during the process.
  • There’s a discussion in the German forum (translation) about mapping streets as areas. There are a couple of suggestions, including area:highway. This sort of mapping is popular in Poland (see for example around here).
  • The contributor ionr asks the German forum about how to deal (de) with review_requested=yes. Besides the discussion, there are tips (de) on tools to find such tags: Find Suspicious OpenStreetMap Changesets, OSMCha and osm-qa-feeds.

Community

  • Topi Tjukanov (@tjukanov) tweets an animation showing the “optimal routes by car from the geographic centre of the contiguous United States to +3000 counties”. The author posted a blog on how he creates these visualisations.
  • Contributor acette wrote a post about the creation of OSM Visual History, an improved version of OSM Deep History. It features a more interactive user interface, with a map that shows older versions of OSM elements. Have a look for yourself and feel free to provide feedback to the author.
  • The note in our previous issue that weeklyOSM will discontinue the calendar server on end of this year prompted a discussion on the Talk mailing list as to whether one of the users involved in the dispute should be banned from the OSM wiki.
  • User Natenom reports (de) (translation) about his first major change, which he made to OpenStreetMap with the help of the community, which included a new roundabout with corresponding relocation of the public transport relations and much more.

  • On the Imports mailing list, a Swiss mapper shared details of a semi-automatic import planned at canton Basel-Stadt in Switzerland. A similar import had been initiated in 2015/2016 without the review of the Imports mailing list. However, the new proposal, currently in the planning stage, seeks review on the Imports mailing list.

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • OpenStreetMap UK asks if they should purchase a 360-degree camera for OpenStreetMap events and for renting it to OSM UK members.
  • This year’s Annual General Meeting of the OSM Foundation will take place on December 9th. Voting will be limited to the fully paid members and members who have registered 30 days prior to the AGM date. If you are interested in voting, you need to register as a member or renew your subscription now!
  • The minutes of the OSMF Board of Directors meeting on October 26th are now online. The topics were: guidelines for the use of the “State of the Map” trademark, a mailing list of the Advisory Board, planning the 2017 Annual General Meeting, a status report on current application procedures for new regional representations, and employment of administrative support for SotM activities.
  • Members of FOSSGIS e.V., the de-facto local OSM chapter in Germany, discussed a proposal (de) (automatic translation) by Frederik Ramm which asks to support a new routing server which could provide OSRM-powered routing on openstreetmap.de and openstreetmap.org.
  • The State of the Map Working Group blogs about the experience of the 15 scholars from around the globe who attended State of the Map 2017. For all of them, the conference has been an inspiring experience, and a window to the international OSM community.

Events

Humanitarian OSM

  • Dale Kunce announces the new HOT code of conduct on the HOT mailing list.
  • John Whelan complains on the HOT mailing list about the excessive amount of automatic emails sent by version 3 of the Tasking Manager following a Task evaluation.
  • Safwat Halaby complains on the Talk mailing list about a HOT project in the West Bank, which has a number of problems. In the discussion following, voices are raised about a lack of quality awareness among the creators of HOT mapping projects and mapathon organisers.

Maps

  • Support Klimaschutzkarte (climate protection map) with OpenStreetMap: The Climate Protection Map Germany of the Department of Geoinformatics at Heidelberg University helps to inform about local sustainable consumption, renewable energy, climate-friendly mobility and other aspects of climate protection in your region. Help to increase the awareness of this by entering corresponding locations to OSM.
  • Christoph Hormann proposes a set of rendering solutions that improve map readability at high zoom levels in his blog. It is unthinkable to keep the same rendering of a certain type of way at all zoom levels. Paper cartography solved it by using different styles for each map; digital cartography has the extra challenge to keep rendering both consistent and clear at any scale.

Open Data

  • Nathaniel Vaughn Kelso announces the immediate availability of the Natural Earth dataset, version 4.

Software

  • Daniel Patterson from Mapbox announces an update to the OSRM demo server and explains the benefits of the changes.

Programming

  • Thomas Gratier points out “An analysis of the Mapbox GL JS library by Delft University of Technology students (master-level)”.
  • Mapbox announces GL expressions with the release of Mapbox GL JS v0.41.0.
  • Roland Olbricht explains in detail in his blog post why he considers the Linux init system systemd unsuitable for the operation of the Overpass API. Systemd has recently repeatedly caused corrupt databases and serious errors with Overpass. Roland also presents alternative approaches.

Releases

  • JOSM 13053 is the latest stable release. Usability on high-DPI display has been improved, among other things.
  • For other software releases, please refer to OSM Software Watchlist from Wambacher.

Other “geo” things

  • Shareloc, the free map API for creating and sharing OpenLayers maps, now offers the TopPlus-Web-Open map service of the BKG as a layer in the official demo. TopPlus-Web-Open is based on multiple free data sources, including OSM.
  • Phil McLaughlin from Esri Ireland presented his thoughts about the Open Data Camp 2017 in Queens University, Belfast from a geographer’s point of view.
  • A detailed test of the Casio WSD F20 Pro Trek-Smartwatch was published on Pocketnavigation.de (de). Among others the accuracy of the GPS receiver and navigation with different apps based on OSM and Google Maps map data was tested.
  • The “Geoawesomeness” blog published an introduction to the Discrete Global Grid System (DGGS) standard announced by the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC).
  • As of next year, Ghana will no longer use a Google-based system for address locating and thus save $400,000 in annual license fees. Instead, a self-developed system from the Ghanaian postal service will be used.
  • An article on Atlas Obscura presents the challenges climate change poses to cartography.
  • Everton-supporting pranksters have turned local rivals Liverpool blue by “defining” a new search term for Anfield.
  • A press release reported on the collaboration between Telenav and Waylens, which has developed a special wide-angle Horizon car camera, whose GPS data and recordings are automatically transferred to the Telenav Cloud to improve OSM data for autonomous driving.

How did you contribute with new features 1 | © Pascal Neis

About us

  • SunCobalt has written a parser in Python for the wiki calendar based on the new hCalendar format. The parser has already been successfully integrated into OSMBC so that the OpenStreetMap calendar will remain a part of WeeklyOSM even after 2017-12-31. Big thanks to Thomas on behalf of our readers as well.

Mapping

  • An enthusiastic tweet from Pascal Neis celebrating the reaching of one million members who contributed at least one changeset to OSM. The responses suggest that figure is a little high if one takes into account unsuccessful edits (empty changesets), and that the actual mark of one million data contributors will be passed in the next couple of months.
  • Antoine Riche reports (fr) about a procurement market to add and maintain bike-related data in OSM around Paris, France. A mapper has been hired and the ongoing work is tracked using #CartoVeloIDF. Carto’Cité will handle connections with the OSM and biking communities. In the light of the recent discussions on paid mapping, they make a point of documenting the whole process on the wiki.
  • Strava has updated its heatmap and written an article about the update. Evaluating three trillion latitude/longitude points (10 terabytes of raw data), the heatmap can also be used in iD and JOSM.
  • User ypid reported in his blog that there are nearly 1 million recorded opening hours in OSM.

Community

  • [1] Pascal Neis’ tool “How did you contribute to #OpenStreetMap?” was updated. Pascal marked the changes in the tweet image. A blog post has been announced, but not yet published.
  • Since October 23rd, members of Project EOF, supported by OIF, carried out seven “OSM, FreeGIS and open data” workshops in Niamey (Niger), Ouagadougou (Burkina-Faso), Saint-Louis (Senegal), Lomé (Togo) as well as Saint-Marc, Cap-Haitien and Port-au-Prince (Haiti) and also 15 one-day actions mixing conferences, technical sessions and mapathons. Follow this on Twitter through #ActionOifProjetEOF.
  • The OSM community was recently awarded at the DINACon conference on digital sustainability. The announcement includes the list of this year’s OSM Awards, awarded at SotM 2017.
  • The Nigerian OpenStreetMap community now has a Twitter account.

Imports

  • After Paris and Nice, Vincent Frison plans to import building heights in Montpellier, France. He created a dedicated wiki page to document the process, based on different ground models and open data provided by the city.

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • The provisional minutes of the meeting of the Licensing Working Group of OSMF on November 2nd are online. Main topics are the directive on the use of the “State of the Map” trademark and data protection issues in connection with the new EU Data Protection Basic Regulation.

Events

  • The State of the Map LatAm 2017 program is online! You can find out more about the activities here.

  • User MKnight writes (de) (automatic translation) a diary post about the user interface of Tasking Manager version 3.

Maps

  • Sven Geggus, maintainer of the German fork of OSM Carto reports about its current state and the recent difficulties.
  • The developers of OSM Carto discuss a proposal to increase the minimum zoom level of some features whose rendering currently starts on zoom levels 5 to 7. Propositions of different rendering based on density/realities of different countries are rejected because of limits of the rendering tool.

Software

  • User baditaflorin wrote a diary entry on how to create a translation file to convert shapefiles to OSM data. Furthermore, Cygnus is used for conflation.

Programming

  • Bryan Housel merged a pull request bringing OpenStreetCam imagery into the iD editor.
  • Carto users ask more and more often to quickly render large geographic datasets with the PostGIS-Mapnik toolchain. Paul Ramsey provides an accurate performance analysis of the various processing steps, alongside with available optimisations and future development plans.
  • User Convergence presented a new 3D renderer on Reddit with New York as an example.

Did you know …

Other “geo” things

  • Through a Twitter moment, user sev_osm showcased over 10 outreach and training workshops on CarteInnov run by Les Libres Geographes (LLG) and local OSM mappers. This project supported by International Organization of Francophonie (OIF) aims at building an open map of Digital Innovation stakeholders in Haiti, Madagascar and 12 African countries. The data is hosted in OSM and edited with MapContrib.
  • You can cast your vote on the revised version of the Fire Hydrant Extensions proposal until November 27th. The original version did not achieve the required majority.
  • The voting of the proposal Metro Mapping has started and will end on November 24th. Several people including companies which already map stations criticize the proposal on the Tagging mailing list.
  • Gabe Appleton presents his suggestion for the timing of traffic lights and expects constructive criticism.
  • BeKri complains (de) (automatic translation) in the German forum about a remarkably large number of new Wheelmap users in Munich, who very often enter POIs twice or place them at wrong locations. Holger from Wheelmap promises a new editor which can only edit wheelchair=* and toilet:wheelchair=* tags.

Community

  • The developers of Jungle Bus shares a tweet on Twitter for help to translate their app.
  • The Atom Feed interface of Pascal Neis Suspicious OpenStreetMap Changesets has now got the optional bbox parameter. The parameter country can then be omitted. (Source)
  • User ChristianA wrote a blog post about the drawbacks of open data. The lack of outdoor and more armchair mapping.
  • An incorrect wikidata link in OSM caused an area of the Bronx to be mislabelled on Mapbox Vector tiles.
  • Kathmandu Living Labs invited the current Women Leaders in Technology ([WLiT(http://wlit.org.np/)) fellowship holders to join a special OSM session. Participants gained their first experiences in the use of OSM through hand-on mapping. They also had a chance to learn about mapping and OSM, as well as possible ways to contribute to the global OSM database.
  • Sterling Geo describes in their blog how they compared Sentinel-2 data with OSM land use data.

Imports

  • The company Cybo which operates a yellow pages directory wants to offer its POI data to OpenStreetMap. There are two parallel threads on the Imports and Talk-us mailing list. the coordinates seem to be retrieved using Google’s geocoding API and cannot be used by OSM due to legal reasons.

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • Just less than three years ago, a member-initiated initiative proposed to reorganize the terms of office for OSMF board members and limit the terms of office. Simon Poole writes to the Osmf-talk mailing list about getting a clear statement from the board on addressing this in 2018
  • Data Working Group has published its activity report (PDF) for the third quarter of 2017.
  • Members of FOSSGIS e.V., the de-facto local OSM chapter in Germany, discuss about a grant application (de) (automatic translation) to sponsor a secondary production server for the German instance of the Overpass API (overpass-api.de).
  • This year’s meeting of the OSM Foundation members will take place on December 9th via IRC. Details can be found in the invitation email. Two new board members must be elected. OSMF members can register as candidates until November 25th. Details on the elections in the OSM-Wiki, and there is also a page for voter questions.

Software

  • Pieter Vander Vennet shows how to write your own OsmAnd routing profile.

Programming

  • Richard Fairhurst describes in his user diary how to debug Lua scripts of Osm2pgsql and OSRM without re-running a time consuming import each iteration.

Did you know …

  • … that you can create new nodes in JOSM while you are in the extrusion mode (key X) by doing a double-click? It saves pressing A and X. (via a thread (de) in the German OSM forum)
  • Latest Changes on OpenStreetMap by Martin Raifer? It shows all changed objects in the last seven days in an area.

Other “geo” things

  • An interview by MARTECHSERIES with Javier de la Torre, the founder of CARTO (including the basic map of OSM).
  • In its latest issue, the Spanish online magazine NOSOLOSIG reports on the first maps of the Palaeolithic period. The map carved in a stone, which clearly contains geographical references, was found during excavations in the cave of Abauntz near the village of Arraitz about 20 km north of Pamplona, Spain, and is therefore called “the map of Abauntz”. A translation of the article with deepl is worthwhile. 😉 (es) (automatic translation)
  • Gulf News reports that the 2nd “Louvre” was opened in Abu Dhabi. Of course, it is already recorded in OSM. The tagging is obviously still not complete. 😉
  • Theodolite, an app for “Augmented Reality”, which according to prMac contains excellent OSM data even in “the middle of nowhere” is coming for iPhone X.
  • A tourist from Milan got stuck with his vehicle in a medieval alley in Como because he trusted his satnav more than his eyes. The map data was not from OpenStreetMap, but the incident inspired the local OSM comunity to recheck the area for possible mistakes.

Mapping

  • Erkin writes in the tagging mailing list about voting related to proposed tag – Education Reform Alternative.
  • There is a proposal on Differentiation for routes of public transport which adds a standardized way to differentiate between route scopes (local, regional, national and international) and public transport route types (like express, long-distance bus service vs. urban city bus or high-speed intercity train vs. regional commuter).
  • Safwat Halaby created an auxiliary website where you can enter a changeset ID and get redirected to the visualisation of this changeset by Achavi.
  • The next version of Vespucci comes with a new C-Mode to help you find objects that need your attention in an ever more densely mapped world. The warnings are based on the presets Vespucci shares with JOSM and are user configurable.
  • In Belgium a road completion project was started using MapRoulette. It proposes roads that are in the Wegenregister/GRB (Flemish reference base of geodata), but not on OSM. Some of them are private driveways though, so a (local) mapper’s discretion is definitely called for.
  • User wille announced in his blog that he set a new layer automatically accessible in JOSM and iD providing street names for Salvador da Bahia in Brazil, using the public domain data about city blocks segments provided by IBGE (the Brazilian Institute for Geography and Statistics). He proposes to repeat it for other Brazilian cities and will publish the code for the whole process.

Community

  • Pascal Neis posted about the recent updates to his project HDYC: “How did you contribute to OpenStreetMap?”. Users can now opt-in to make their profile public. A few more modifications on the statistics and visualisation are also part of this update.
  • Horea Meleg and Florin Badita were chosen as the mappers of the month in Belgium. Both work for TeleNav and mostly improve North America. In the interview they give an insight to their work.
  • blogs.openstreetmap.org, the website which provides a collective feed of lots of OSM related blogs, did not show new entries due to a bug on 12th and 13th November.
  • Zverik wrote a disheartened diary entry about his last proposal about metro mapping improvements. He shares about how a proposal can be criticised and blocked beyond its technical merits, because votes have the power to override constructive discussions.

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • Martijn writes to the Talk-de mailing list, sharing the announcement of FOSSGIS eV on the application of official German representation (Local Chapter) of the OpenStreetMap. He asks the Community to share – any questions, comments or concerns they have so that they can go ahead and pursue this.
  • The first candidates have stood up for election for the upcoming elections to the OSMF board of directors. Links to the candidates’ manifestos can be found on the OSM wiki. Everyone can ask the candidates questions and read their responses to other users’ questions.
  • The 2017 Annual General Meeting of the OpenStreetMap Foundation will take place online in the IRC chat room #osmf-gm on the IRC network irc.oftc.net, on Saturday 09th December 2017 at 16:00 UTC. Further details on the Board election are available on the wiki.
  • As part of his candidacy for the board of the OpenStreetMap Foundation, Joost Schouppe opens up Reddit thread –
AskMeAnything in which he gets asked questions of users from all subjects.
  • Due to limited demand and a lack of disk space, the Operations Working Group is thinking about not offering all old planet dumps for download any more.

Events

  • For the fourth time there will be a Geospatial devroom at FOSDEM, and it will be happening on Sunday, 4th of February, 2018 in Brussels, Belgium! The participation is free of charge and open to all. The deadline for submitting your talk (either 10-minutes or 20-minutes long) is December 1st. All information is available in the devroom announcement.

Open Data

  • An article in the Frankfurter Allgemeiner makes the case that data collected on behalf of and paid for by taxpayers should be freely available – they shouldn’t have to “pay again” to see it (automatic translation).
  • Jakob Miksch, Martin Sudmanns and Karina Krampf won second place at the EU Datathon. They presented their webappLightOnEurope“, which allows to notify the public about open datasets, by drawing polygons around the area for which data is available.

Software

  • User nrdegroot writes in the forum about making a 3D renderer for OpenStreetMap using Mapzen and babylon.js.

Programming

  • Github user Halhen shows how to produce traffic density maps in Rstats using road networks from OpenStreetMap.

Releases

  • The new release of Mapbox Maps SDK for React Native v6.0.0 has been rewritten from the ground up to support runtime styling and animations
  • Car parks have changed from yellow to grey on the main Carto map on OSM. Kocio-pl summarises this and other changes with the new release.
  • Mapbox Navigation SDK for Android v0.7.0 comes with a redesigned turn banner, improved voice guidance, feedback screen and dropdown directions list.
  • Mapbox Navigation SDK for iOS v0.10.0 comes with a redesigned turn banner and step table, dynamic zoom levels to show more of the road ahead, improved voice guidance, alternative routes, iPhone X support, German and Dutch localizations
  • The new release of MapboxDirections.swift v0.12 uses the current system language by default for instructions
  • Lily Kaiser summarizes the changes of Mapbox SDK 5.2.0 (Android) and 3.7.0 (iOS) on the Mapbox blog.

Other “geo” things

  • Map of Jacaranda trees in Buenos Aires made by Buenos Aires Ciudad using Carto.
  • Stéphane Péneau tweeted the pictures of the encounter of two Mapillary contributors, one in a car, the other on a bike.
  • Johan Åhlfeldt writes a blog in Pelagios about building the Roman Empire vector tile map using Maputnik.
  • Cartida, a product of Omniscale, sells individual posters and canvases based on OpenStreetMap in different colours and shapes from 29.00 €. 😉
  • Maps.me is the cycling app of the week at road.cc.
  • Google has done a redesign to its map product Maps, which is supposed to benefit from clarity. Reddit users criticizes the poor implementation for color-blind people.
  • Businessinsider.de explains (de) how specific “mistakes” on Google Maps are intentional and are used to track copyright violations. The process of adding nonexistent streets or even whole settlements to the map is not new to map producers, and the extra map features are known as trap streets.

Frederic Stats

The currently most active OpenStreetMap contributors in almost realtime 1 | © Frederik Ramm

Mapping

  • Martijn van Exel is working on a new version of MapRoulette and asks users to name the feature they miss the most.
  • Selfish Seahorse asks on the mailing list how to tag correctly a street with a barrier but double-sided passage for pedestrians and cyclists.
  • The Telenav Mapping Team is active in Ecuador and invites the community to collaborate. Activities will initially focus on Quito, Guayquil, Cuenca, Machala and Loja.
  • On Reddit the question was raised if it is useful that StreetComplete adds the tag cycleway=no to roads that were reviewed with the app.

Community

  • [1] Frederik Ramm has published a visualisation website which shows the currently most active OpenStreetMap users in almost realtime.
  • Edward Betts has written a tool that makes it easy for OSM newcomers to find a mailing list relevant to them from the OSM environment. Local mailing lists could be added to the tool.
  • Geochicas celebrate their first anniversary!
  • This week SotMLatam 2017 in Lima is underway! Mappers from communities in Costa Rica, Chile, Colombia, Bolivia, Argentina, Mexico and Peru meet at the Faculty of Social Sciences of the National University of San Marcos in Peru. There is also the participation of public officials, technology researchers and open data to explore solutions for different topics.

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • Four people are now candidates for the two vacancies in the OSMF board of directors. The additional candidates are: Paul Norman who is seeking re-election and David Dean. Although the mailing list osmf-talk discussions can be heated, dedicated mappers will certainly find good arguments for their election decision. The discussions revolve around: gender equality (although it remains unclear how this equality is to be measured); the possible influence of HOT US Inc. on the OSMF; to a possible influence of companies; and the under-representation of areas where few people are mapping. See also the Q&A with candidates on the wiki.
  • The Data Working Group released a draft Directed Editing policy (formerly known as ‘Organised Editing Policy’ or ‘Paid Editing Policy’). There is a short discussion on the Talk mailing list and a longer discussion on the OSMF-Talk mailing list where some people express their concern that the policy will impede the work of humanitarian mapping activities.
  • After many years of activity, the OSM community in the United Kingdom announced the decision to form an official OSM Local Chapter. The formally registered organisation plans to continue the good work on improving data collection, import and use, and on strenghtening the local community.

Humanitarian OSM

  • Nate Smith reports about HOT’s technology planning for 2018: more recognition and validation of volunteer roles; development of further partnerships for more training and tool development; more involvement of the community in the planning of core HOT tools and processes.
  • ThinkWhere, a Scottish GIS company, worked with HOT – the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team – to develop version 3 of the Tasking Manager.
  • The University of the Philippines is using OSM to develop resilience and natural disaster planning for its campuses.

Maps

  • OpenStreetMap is used in newly published paper Michelin maps for the islands of La Reunion, Martinique and Guadeloupe.

switch2OSM

  • Milad Moradi points out an MSc thesis on the quality of OSM for the Canadian road network. Hongyu Zhang from the University of Western Ontario finds OSM data is of comparable quality to other sources.

Open Data

  • The UK Finance Minister Phillip Hammod announced that a new Geospatial Commission will be formed to maximise the value of all UK government data linked to location. The mention of the possibility of the release of the national map agency (Ordnance Survey) MasterMap has excited lots of commentary: here, here and here; discussion on talk-gb; and a statement from OSM-UK.

Programming

  • Oleksiy Muzalyev writes that he has written a simple tool to report averaged values of ele tags on OpenStreetMap
  • Simone Primarosa (aka simoneepri) published a tool that
extracts GeoJSONs of the boundaries of OpenStreetMap and other open databases.

OSM in the media

  • Bike Citizens Mobile Solutions a Graz software company (automatic translation) helps cities to better understand cycling. Their app allows cyclists to share issues with the cycle network. This generates data that provides information about behavior, obstacles or the choice of routes in urban cycling. Kofler explains, “We help the city planners to better understand the cycling traffic and thus adjust the infrastructure accordingly,”

Other “geo” things

  • Richard Fairhurst uses a railway map to offer a few hints about poor cartographic choices.
  • Helios Pro, an augmented reality app for iPhone and iPad, uses, among other data sources, OpenStreetMap buildings to render a 3D reconstruction of buildings.
  • ESA will soon be launching Galileo satellites number 19 to 22 from Kourou. (de) (automatic translation)
  • GIS finds its space on campus at the Center For Geospatial Analysis (CGA), it is housed on the second floor of the Earl Gregg Swem Library. This would become a space for anyone who is working on any type of GIS project.
  • Ahmed Loai Ali from the University of Bremen looks for participants for a study on the influence of human cognition on data classification in OSM.
  • Inside Culture, a programme on the Irish Radio station RTE1, provides an introduction to the Situationists, and also covers the recent 4th World Conference of Psychogeography (4wcop) in Huddersfield and psychogeography in Dublin. OSMer Tim Waters’ blog gives more links to 4wcop talks.
  • Wired suggests that “cartography is the new code” and that there is a developing skills shortage of skilled cartographers.
  • The weekly journal “Der Spiegel” published an article “How to dream” and talks about four interesting books (also for the wish list 😉 ) (de) (automatic translation) – Please observe all books are available in English as well.
    • Alastair Bonnett, New Views, The World Mapped Like Never Before: 50 maps of our physical, cultural and political world
    • Edward Brooke-Hitching, The Phantom Atlas: The Greatest Myths, Lies and Blunders on Maps
    • Georg Braun, Franz Hogenberg, Cities of the World, The Colored Tables from 1572-1617
    • Jasmine Desclaux-Salachas, The Art of Cartographics
  • The MIT Media Lab Emerging Worlds programme discusses on their blog the suitability of various address schemes for India.

Snímek obrazovky nového pluginu pro JOSM QuickLabel 1 | © přispěvatelé OpenStreetMap

OSM CZ

  • Překryv oblastí landuse=meadow a zimních sportů a obecně překryv několika oblastí landuse.

OSM SK

  • Poradní výbor OSM UK není spokojen s návrhem politiky Directed Editing (řízená editace] a proto zaslal svůj vlastní návrh.

Nadace OpenStreetMap

  • Severin (aka sev_osm) píše ve svém deníku o své frustraci a důvodech své rezignace z HOT US.

  • … o affiliate odkazech u Amazonu? Pokud nakupujete vánoční dárky na Amazonu, zvažte prosím využití tohoto programu pro pomoc OpenStreetMap 😉

Obsahuje mnoho vylepšení a nových vlastností.

Election results of the four candidates for the OSMF board election 1

Mapping

  • Volker Schmidt starts a discussion on tagging sidewalks which present difficulties for people in wheelchairs.
  • Marco Boeringa noticed that the value college is missing on the wiki page for building=*, and is of the opinion that the tag building=school is not suitable for this purpose.
  • After his first proposal was rejected for a number of reasons, Ilya Zverev has a fresh proposalt called PTv2 Improvements with regard to Rapid Transit, to change various minor details of the public transport scheme (version 2). See also the discussion on the Tagging mailing list.
  • JavaCoyote shares in a blog post how Pokemon Go inspired him to start contributing to OSM.
  • Thomas Liebig illustrates the pitfalls of monetary incentives for OSM contributions. His real-world example is of mappers collecting Bitcoin rewards from OSMAnd for adding surface=asphalt to motorways.

Community

  • The Regional Court of Dessau-Roßlau passed sentence in the case of the murder of Ulf Möller. Ulf Möller was a mapper, developer and a former member of the OSMF board of directors. He was murdered on 9 January 2012. The Federal Court of Justice in Karlsruhe (Germany) had reversed the first sentence and referred it back to the Regional Court. Spiegel Online reports (de) (automatic translation) about it.
  • Geochicas are the new Mappers of the month.
  • Users in the German OSM forum discuss the possibility of a public transport tagging reform.

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • The results from the elections to Board were announced, we congratulate Heather Leson and Paul Norman for winning these elections!
  • Heather Leson thanked the community for her election to the OSMF board. She has however not yet responded to nebulon42’s questions in the comments.
  • Tobias Knerr has published an analysis of the results of the OSMF board elections in his user blog. On the OSMF website, there is also a screenshot that helps explain the counting process.
  • SunCobalt observes that the number of OSMF members is increasing significantly before elections, and concludes from this that such elections should take place more often. 🙂
  • Kate Chapman, chairperson of the OSM Foundation, has published her annual report in the run-up to the meeting. nebulon42 a critical user on the OSMF mailing list remarked that the report was severely lacking in facts. In response to this Dorothea Kazazi has produced two yearly summaries – a kind of index for the minutes.
  • Frederik Ramm, in his role as Treasurer of the OSM Foundation, has published his annual report. In the discussion this sparked on the OSMF mailing list Christoph Hormann asked for a breakdown of travel expenses for scholarships to State of the Map ’17, which Frederik then provided.
  • Marc Prileau introduces the counter-proposal of a guideline for organized editing of the Advisory Board of OSMF to the OSMF mailing list called Organized Editing Best Practice. This is the Advisory Board’s reaction to the draft Directed Editing Policy of the DWG (reported in an earlier OSMWeekly.)
  • The OSMF reports in the official OpenStreetMap blog that OSM received a $25,000 donation from the American Red Cross to purchase a fallback server for the OSM API’s main database server. This server is already up and running.
  • Frederik Ramm announces that the board of the OpenStreetMap Foundation recognized FOSSGIS e.V. as a Local Chapter of the OpenStreetMap Foundation in Germany.

Humanitarian OSM

  • The Humanitarian OpenStreetMap blog shares insights from the OSM & QGIS training session for geology students in Bamako, Mali.
  • The OpenStreetMap Niger team received a microgrant by HOT to enable more local mapping efforts to complement the remote mapping.
  • An article on dailynews writes about the call made during the State of the Map Tanzania’ meeting in Dar es Salaam where the government and development stakeholders have been urged to rely on the open mapped data results to implement various projects.

Education

  • Lukas Toggenburger suggests on the Talk-ch mailing list to offer interested beginning mappers individual mapping trainings.

Open Data

  • The city of Dormagen in Germany now has an open data portal! In the OSM forum it is presumed that this might be a case of openwashing though: In contradiction to the Germany Zero 2.0 data license they should be using, some uses are banned again immediately in additional texts, meaning the data no longer meets the requirements for a free license. This means the data of the city of Dormagen can’t be reused in OSM.

Software

  • OsmAnd enables adding Holiday Season’s POIs like Christmas markets.

Did you know …

  • … the site raumbezug by Torsten Teubert? He regularly generates OSM maps for Garmin GPS devices.

Other “geo” things

  • The app AR-Globe – David Rumsey Maps for the iPhone (iOS 11.0 upwards) provides a playful visualization of historical globes in the current world.
  • Using Waze or Google Maps is highly problematic in the Gaza strip. Whether the use of a road is advisable or even allowed depends on whether one is Palestinian, Israeli or a resident of specific zones. Local Palestinians had to start creating their own maps, mostly helped by using Maps.me.

Cattle grids

Mapping

  • Imagico, one of the maintainers of the carto rendering style of the default map on OSM’s website, warns that rendering decisions by the “OSM Carto” map style may push mappers to create giant multipolygon relations in order to see collections of small elements, covering a larger area together already appear at lower zoom levels, than they do at present.
  • Martin (dieterdreist) proposes a new tag for an emergency=dry_riser_inlet. These are used for fighting fires in buildings.
  • There are discussions in the German OSM forum about possible changes to the public transport tagging scheme: routes, segments and variants, stop position and platform, objective of a modified public transport model. Contributor Polyglot has shared his thoughts for a public transport tagging change in his user diary.

Community

  • Dale Kunce, president of hotosm.org, claims on Twitter that the OSM mailing list is a “viper pit of racism and misogyny”. This triggers yet another round of heated arguments on the OSMF-talk list until finally a career diplomat intervenes to apply some common sense.
  • Bryan Housel, the chief maintainer of the iD editor has unsubscribed from the HOT mailing list when an “I hate you, iD devs” comment (thankfully, immediately condemned as soon as it appeared) became the final straw.
  • From the ongoing discussions related to code of conduct in the osmf-talk mailing list, John Gilmore shared an article from The Atlantic that focuses on how trigger warnings are hurting mental health.
  • Former HOT board member and former OSMF board candidate IknowJoseph writes a post about his perspective around how the mailing lists are becoming a place to develop a dangerous feedback loop of inappropriate behaviour. Others participate in this conversation by adding their take on it.
  • This (translation) post of “openstreetmapper” in the German forum (saying that only half the addresses of Ludwigsburg had been mapped) motivated several other mappers to map the other half in a matter of days. “openstreetmapper” is visibly amazed.
  • “Skinfaxi” talked in the German OSM forum (automatic translation) about what he’s been doing and how he’s promoted OSM in Sweden this year, also referring to the discussion (translation) about paid community managers on the German OSM forum.
  • Hokko-sha submitted a poll to players of Niantic’s Ingress game in Japan, asking them whether the in-game map improved around their area since the switch to OSM. 146 Agents (Ingress players) answered and 63% of them say the map became worse. He says he will propose OSM mapping activities for Agents to improve the map.

Imports

  • The marketing company Brandify plans to import all Walmart branches across the United States into OSM (in co-operation with Maps.Me). Zverik has created a page to validate the data via OSM Conflator.
  • Following on from the Navads/Shell import, Paul M. Gillard asks on talk-gb mailing list why we do not pull more shop lists from large companies’ websites and import them into OSM.

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • The first State of Map Conference in Tanzania was successfully organised by the Tanzanian OSM community and the Ramani Huria project in Dar es Salaam. A major focus was engaging local communities in different parts of Tanzania.
  • With the German association, FOSSGIS e.V., now as a new OSMF local chapter, Frederik Ramm calls upon German mappers to put OSM activities on their calendar.

Maps

  • SomeoneElse has added rendering of cattle grids mapped as ways instead of nodes (barrier=cattle_grid) in his personal fork of OSM’s Carto map style.

switch2OSM

  • Niantic’s switch to OpenStreetMap for all the in-game maps of their games, like Ingress, Pokémon Go and the upcoming Harry Potter Wizards Unite is permanent. How often the changes to OSM will flow back into the games remains to be determined.
  • The Hamburg Port Map on the port authority website shows all the facilities of the largest seaport in Germany, with live vessel positions, onto a 3D map built with OSM and MapboxGL.

Open Data

  • Rob Nickerson writes to the talk-gb mailing list about OSM UK receiving written permission to use the Emu Analytics’ “English Urban Areas Building Heights” in OpenStreetMap.
