Výzkum OSM

  • John Bryant z Overseas Development Institute zveřejnil pracovní verzi článku Digital mapping and inclusion in humanitarian response.

Nadace OpenStreetMap

  • Michael Collinson jako facilitátor publikoval oficiální sadu otázek a instrukcí pro kandidáty do rady Nadace OSM. Ti by měli zaslat odpovědi a svůj manifest do nedělní půlnoci 14. listopadu.

Mapy

  • [1] Účastníci výzvy „30 Day Map Challenge“ pokračují na Twitteru v tvorbě map s využitím dat OpenStreetMap:
Časté volby byly témata s vodou a místa s modrou v názvu.

  • Komadinovic Vanja nabízí rychlý úvod do používání OSM autentizační služby OAuth 2.

About us

Mapping campaigns

Mapping

  • LySioS compared (fr) > en before and after mapping of a park, which was recommended to him for children’s activities.
  • SK53 looked at some worldwide solar data (we reported last week) and compared it with OSM data for China.
  • Polish mappers discussed (pl) > en, on the forum, whether any special mapping is required for areas currently under emergency regulations on the border with Belarus.
  • Requests have been made for comments on the following proposals:
    • snow_chains to map where and when you need to use snow chains on your vehicle.
    • defensive_work=* to tag defensive structures in historic/pre-modern fortifications.
    • network:type=basic_network to distinguish nameless connections in the cycle/hiking route network from named routes and numbered node networks.
  • The outlet=* proposal for tagging culvert or pipeline outlets with more details, was approved with 20 votes for, 0 votes against and 0 abstentions.

Community

  • [1] Over more than 10 years, successive cohorts of students of the Colegio Salesiano in Duitama, Columbia under the guidance of Professor Leonardo Gutierrez have been continually mapping, refining, and expanding the public transport data available to the people of Duitama via the BusBoy app. Professor Leonardo Gutierrez is a long-time OSM contributor. In late 2014, he organised a live teaching session with his students and Humanitarian OSM contributors.
  • Jaime Crespo provided (es) > en
short notes from an informal online meeting of members of the Spanish community which have been added (es) > en to the wiki.
  • Charlie Plett reports on his effort to map all Primary and Secondary schools in the Corozal District, Belize.
  • Cyberjuan presents a thematic summary of what was discussed at the event Building Local Community in OSM: Tips, Tricks and Challenges, organised by the HOT Community Working Group on November 8th.
  • Jennings Anderson revisited an old graphic exploring OpenStreetMap contributor life spans. The original work, published in 2018 (as we reported), used data up to 2014. The updated graphs cover the period to 2021.
  • On Wednesday 1 December at 20:30 (UTC+1), Adrien, Donat and Florian will have their first Live mapping session (fr) on their new YouTube channel Tropicamap. Live mapping sessions will take place on the first Wednesday of each month and aim to reach a younger public. This first mapping session will be aimed at the French toy shop cooperative JouéClub.
  • PlayzinhoAgro took (pt) > en his second anniversary as an OSM contributor as an opportunity to report on his OSM activities over the past year.

Education

  • During the UN Map Marathon 2021, which will take place from 22 to 26 November, UN Mappers are offering two online training sessions:
    • ‘Running with JOSM’, on Monday 22, aimed at those who want to approach the use of JOSM for the first time;
    • ‘From marathon to maps: how to use OSM data’, on Friday 26, focused on the use of OSM data with QGIS.

The sessions will be held in English, French and Portuguese. Once registered, it will be possible to participate in the mapping competition. The best mapper of the map marathon will be announced on Friday.

OSM research

  • Annett Bartsch was interviewed by Doug Johnson, from ArsTechnica, about the study she and her team published criticising the poor quality of mapping data above the Arctic Circle. The study claims to depict a more accurate representation of the local human footprint and its long-term impact.

Maps

  • The #30DayMapChallenge, which we covered last week, and the week before, continues. Once again we have selected some of the maps using OpenStreetMap data:
    • Day 10: Raster – Not surprisingly, given that OSM is a vector dataset, entries were somewhat scarce. A 3-D jigsaw puzzle by D&G Placenames stood out.
    • Day 11: 3D – gonsta’s tactile map of Cherkasy (Ukraine).
    • Day 12: Population – OSM data were used to show where people live in the French commune of Orsay (Come_M_S).
    • Day 13: Natural Earth data – Federica Gaspari managed to include some OSM data as well as those of Natural Earth.
    • Day 14: New tool – Prettymaps (by Marcelo Prateles, reported earlier) was a popular choice for a new mapping tool (Bill Morris, Heikki Vesanto, University of Pretoria Youthmappers). Clare Powells’s 3-D visualisation of buildings of Dubai using Cesium also demonstrated OSM data nicely.
    • Day 15: Without using a computer – needless to say this was one challenge where OSM was not a lot of help, but Justin Roberts worked out a way, mapping a GPS trace of a route for later incorporation in OSM.
  • Did you know it was possible to find all the maps published during the 30DayMapChallenge by searching on Twitter ‘30DayMapChallenge Day‘ followed by the day number?
  • Cartographer John Nelson, of ESRI, provided some general advice as to when to add a north arrow to a map.

Open Data

  • skunk has written (de) > en a small tool that helps to match open government datasets with Wikimedia (Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, Wikidata) and OpenStreetMap.

Software

  • Rohner Solutions has (de) > en put up a doner kebab search tool using OSM data, but it requires you to enter or select a place name or to share your location to get a result.

Did you know …

  • …that JOSM is used by less than 10% of the contributors, but since 2010 has provided the majority of the total of OSM edits? UN Mappers opened a poll, during GISDay, to explore the reasons and to propose free training sessions on this powerful editor. You can still participate this Sunday!
  • … that you can deactivate all quests at once in the task selection settings of StreetComplete? Then you can activate the questions that interest you – for example, questions about incomplete addresses.
  • … the European OpenGHGMap, by the Norwegian University of Science and Technology and collaborators, show a city-level carbon dioxide emissions inventory for Europe?
  • … the tool showing the content of relations with type=destination_sign, direction_* tags on guideposts, as well as destination tags on highways and guideposts?

OSM in the media

Other “geo” things

  • Google’s flood forecasting system is now live in all of India and Bangladesh, and they are working to expand to countries in South Asia and South America.
  • grin described the setup they have been using to collect real-time kinematic positioning data (we reported earlier).
  • Our favorite #30DayMapChallenge: the Mapping Cube video from ArtisansCartographes. Have fun practising your mapping cubic dexterity.

About us

  • Kai Michael Poppe has extended his multi-purpose-bot to also inform the D-A-CH Telegram group when a new issue of weeklyOSM is published.
    • Kai invited other Telegram groups that are interested to make use of this service too, using a new bot.
    • We have created a spreadsheet in which we ask administrators to enter the Telegram group that they want to be served directly when a new weeklyOSM is published.

Mapping

  • Managing imagery alignment has always been a problem; bdhurkett found a solution for Burnie (Tasmania) as suburb polygons are well aligned with fences and other property boundaries. They outline how they are incrementally adjusting OSM objects to match these alignments more consistently.
  • SherbetS showed a setup for river mapping using a PlayStation controller and JOSM.
  • SK53 continued his examination of how natural=heath is used in Wales with a detailed example of a small hilltop heathland which was previously unmapped.
  • Voting is underway for the following proposals:
    • motorroad=yes (ja) > en, to formalise a definition of motorroad for Japan, until Saturday 4 December.
    • ref:EU:bwid=*, to record the unique identifier of a bathing site, until Monday 6 December.

Community

  • Canadian cartographers discussed, on the forum, the relevance of special mapping for flood disasters and landslides in various areas of British Columbia.
  • The Local Chapters and Communities Working Group presented the ‘OpenStreetMap Welcome Tool’. The tool is designed to make it easy to welcome new mappers to your country or region.

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • On the OSMF mailing list Heikki Vesanto suggested a ‘made with OSM logo’ along the lines of those of Natural Earth and QGIS. Note that this is subtly different from an OSM mark, an idea which was recently revived (as we reported earlier), in that it would be additional to, not a replacement for, existing attribution requirements.
  • Michal Migurski, candidate for the OSMF Board, asked on MetaFilter about ‘organisations that form in spite of their grassroots counterparts’, and asked how ‘new members’ could ‘circumvent a community organisation to form something larger and more organised’.

Events

  • Both State of the Map Africa and the HOT Summit occurred last weekend (20 and 22 November), a little too late for inclusion of highlights in this week’s weeklyOSM. One talk several people noted on Twitter, was by Alazar Tekle from AddisMap, one of the earliest OpenStreetMap startups anywhere in the world. No videos, at present, but you can view their, virtual, presentation at State of the Map 2010 on YouTube.

Education

  • Pascal Neis left a message on the changeset of a Chinese newcomer to ask why they deleted lots of data. Another user in the comments pointed out that this was OSM mapping homework assigned to students by an instructor at Central South University. Other mappers from China also showed their disappointment (zhcn) > en with these homework changesets. Should teachers be responsible for such improper behaviour of students? How should we deal with the teacher’s assignment of editing in OSM as homework?
  • Videos of presentations by Heidelberg Institute for Geoinformation Technology (HeiGIT), given at the recent FOSS4G conference, are now available online. Subjects include: an OSM Confidence Index developed using the ohsome.org framework, and an introduction and update on MapSwipe .

OSM research

  • Alexander Zipf’s group has received funding to start a new project related to climate change actions – ‘GeCO – Generating high-resolution CO2 maps by Machine Learning-based geodata fusion and atmospheric transport modelling’.

Maps

  • Here are some selected OpenStreetMap-based maps from the penultimate week of the #30DayMapChallenge, which we have been following all month:

Software

  • The website Visionscarto announced (fr) > en the launch of three tools built with OpenStreetMap and uMap to identify available agricultural lands and their uses by the association ‘Terre de liens’.
  • Hauke Stieler created a web application called OSM Open to find POIs that are open at a selected point in time. The data can also be filtered by tags and the source code is available on GitHub. He has chosen to hide the OpenStreetMap attribution by default.

Did you know …

  • … the existence of the xmas:feature key? While scarcely used (about 2000 items) and mainly in Germany, this ‘in use’ tag was introduced in 2009 and grows each year by a few hundred or so. Its use has been debated and a merging proposal with the temporary: namespace was made, but the proposal has been inactive since 2016.
  • [1] … the Open Indoor Viewer called ‘OpenLevelUp‘?
  • … there is a list of new keys recently created in OSM? Most of them involve typos or ignorance of established tagging principles. Comes with direct links to correct them.
  • OSM Streak, the gamified web application that encourages you to do small tasks in OpenStreetMap every day? There is also a Telegram account named @osm_streak_bot, which you can configure to remind you of your daily task.

OSM in the media

  • The government of France has unveiled (fr) > en its action plan for open source software and digital commons which, as its name suggests, aims to strengthen the use of open source and encourage the opening up of public data. A specific objective is to reference open source software and digital commons such as OpenStreetMap, a free and collaborative digital tool from which other tools such as transport.data.gouv.fr (fr) > en are derived.

Other “geo” things

  • Archival geodata are now available (pl) > en as WMS layers from the Polish national geoportal.
  • The general secretariat of the German Red Cross (GRC), based in Berlin, is looking (de) for a ‘Manager Geoinformatics’. The position is responsible for the implementation of the project ‘Development of geoinformatics for the international humanitarian aid activities of the GRC – Strengthening the cooperation with the Heidelberg Institute for Geoinformation Technology’. The person chosen will also help develop programmes and basic approaches for the use and support of OpenStreetMap.
  • Reibert wrote (ru) > de about the official state register [uk] > de of permits to harvest timber in Ukraine.
  • SkyNews reported that Mapbox’s route to a stock market listing, through a Softbank SPAC (Special Purpose Acquisition Company), has run out of steam.

Mapping

  • Enock4seth complained about changeset comments consisting solely of hashtags. These make it difficult to understand exactly what changes people are making in Ghana, so he is now asking new mappers to provide explanations as well.

Community

  • LuxuryCoop was interviewed about OpenStreetMap in South Korea, as part of the Geomob podcast series.
  • Contributor LySioS has illustrated the ’10 commandments for the OSM contributor’ as a short presentation slide deck (fr). There is also a related discussion (fr) on the OSM-FR forum.

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • What type of memberships are there in the OSM Foundation? You can apply for a free membership if you have mapped on 42 or more days in the past year. If you contribute to OpenStreetMap in ways other than mapping, but equivalent in effort to the mapping requirement, you may also qualify. Note that new members will not be eligible to vote at this year’s Annual General Meeting.
  • Existing OSMF members have until Saturday 4 December 00:00 UTC (at midnight Friday/Saturday) to renew their membership via the Application form for active mapping contributor membership (i.e., 42 days or more of OSM mapping in the last year).
  • Allan Mustard has published the 2021 Annual Chairperson’s Report and reminded the members of the OSMF that the Annual General Meeting is just around the corner (online in the IRC chat room #osmf-gm on the IRC network irc.oftc.net, starting Saturday 11 December at 16:00 UTC). Voting to elect four new members of the OSMF Board of Directors (six candidates) will begin Saturday 4 December and there is also a proposed amendment to the Articles of Association, to count time as an associate member for board candidacy requirements. Please be sure to vote!
  • On the OSM-wiki one can find links to the answers from the 2021 OSMF Board election candidates and their manifestos.
  • Did you know that the monthly board meetings of the OSMF are public and broadcast live on the web? The dates are published in an OSS calendar.

Events

  • The State of the Map Africa 2021 took place online from 19 to 21 November. Here are a selection of some reflections on this event:
    • Erick Tamba STATE OF THE MAP AFRICA 2021: (SMCoSE YouthMappers)
    • Maria Nabuwembo Celebrating the open mapping culture and its impact across Africa
    • Vickystickz My Experience @ State of The Map 2021
    • Sheila Job Development of solutions using data.

Education

  • stragu published their RStats and OpenStreetMap workshop which was presented both at State of the Map 2021 and ResBazQld (Research Bazaar Queensland).
  • Taiwanese Mapper Supaplex pointed out the Organised Editing Guidelines to community members, suggesting that they could constrain obvious assignments appointed by school teachers, and register contact information and mapping purposes. As mapping requires state permission in China, it might not be a good idea to ask people from China to follow the Organised Editing Guidelines, which would require they register their contact information and mapping project purposes.

Maps

  • Sundellviz showed ‘where to get a drink in Europe’, a map on which all the cafés, bars, pubs and beer gardens in Europe are displayed as different coloured dots. As argued in the comments section, the fact that each type of establishment is called by different terms in each country seems to be the cause of some inconsistencies on the map.
  • Bristow explained (fr) > en how to get aerial views in OSMAnd and in particular those of of the French National Geographic Institute.
  • [1] Here are some selected OpenStreetMap-based maps from the final week of the #30DayMapChallenge:
    • Day 23: GHSL: the second challenge based on a non-OSM data source. Dror Bogin felt they had to add some OSM data to ‘make it interesting’ for Iceland.
    • Day 24: Historical map: Heikki Vesanto animated the ongoing effort by the OSM Irish community to map all of the buildings in Ireland.
    • Day 25: Interactive map: Zihan Song demonstrated the new clustering features in ArcGIS with an interactive a map of shop locations extracted from OSM.
    • Day 26: Choropleth map: Topi Tjukanov, who started the Challenge, divided Helsinki into segments based on the closest shop of each grocery retail chain.
    • Day 27: Heatmap: Hans van der Kwast pointed to the concentration of bicycle parking in South Holland, the Netherlands, mapped in OSM.
    • Day 28: The Earth is not flat: Fedir Gontsa depicted coverage for the biggest private postal and courier company in Ukraine using OSM data.
    • Day 29: Null: Ryan Hart found a Null Road in the OSM road network of North Carolina, USA.
    • Day 30: Metamapping: on the last day of the Challenge, while most people took a break, Marie Anna Baovola mapped buildings and roads in Kigali, Rwanda, obtained from OSM.

Open Data

  • The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) launched (pt) > en the Continuous Vector Cartographic Base of the State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil on 27 October. These IBGE data are freely available for use in OpenStreetMap.

Software

  • Sarah Heidekorn blogged about the new ways to access the ohsome API, an application that allows non-programmers to analyse the rich data source of OpenStreetMap history. Tools to help analyse OpenStreetMap data are available in packages for Python, R, QGIS, and JavaScript.

Programming

  • Colin Angus, VictimOfMaths, for some time now has been making available the R code for all plots he shows on Twitter. A side effect of his participation in the #30DayMapChallenge is that the code for his isochrone map is available on GitHub.

Did you know …

  • … the Web to OSM Opening Hours converter? You can copy and paste website content, including tables, into a form field that will extract the textual content and try to convert this into values that conforms to the opening_hours key.

Other “geo” things

  • In Australia, ABC News reported on the detailed Lidar analysis that has uncovered failures by the state logging company to abide by strict laws designed to protect valuable water catchments in Victoria.
  • The Laotian Times reported that the government of Laos has introduced large fines for unauthorised mapping or use of unauthorised maps.
  • BBC News profiled Geograph a website where contributors share geographically located photographs, grouped by 1 km grid squares. Geograph covers Great Britain and Ireland – there is also a German equivalent. Photographs are licensed CC-BY-SA.

Mapping campaigns

  • [1] The UN Mappers – IIEP UNESCO mapping campaign, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education in Madagascar, brought together almost 900 volunteers to advance education planning: 9845 km of roads were mapped around the Vakinankaratra region in Madagascar. 97% of schools are now connected to road network data, compared to just over half at the beginning of the project. The road network produced is processed using the IIIEP-UNESCO school catchment plugin to assess travel times children undertake every day from home to school, and to design better interventions.

Mapping

  • darkonus gave instructions explaining how to install JOSM on a Mac with Apple Silicon.
  • Forteller shared the adventure of surveying by bike and then mapping more than 100 parks in Oslo, which led to an opportunity to discover new places.
  • Requests have been made for comments on the following proposals:
    • amenity=library_dropoff for mapping a place where library patrons can return or drop-off books, other than the library itself.
    • ele=* to allow the use of any of the documented height units for tagging elevations.

Community

  • OpenMapChile reported on their progress on the mapping of urban trees, specifically in the city of Valdivia, where they have achieved a total of 15,062 trees added.

Maps

  • Yves noted having added the remaining missing functionality of the OpenSnowMap website to the mobile-friendly version, it’s time to de-commission the older version. In case you feel lost, you can still find the old version (at least for a while) from the menu option ‘LEGACY OPENSNOWMAP.ORG’

Open Data

  • Michael Cieslik demonstrated how open elevation profile data can be used to compare buildings heights with LOD2 style 3D renderings of OSM data. The discussion in Michael’s tweet (de) focuses on the differences in the datasets and potential means of synchronisation.

Software

  • While discussing the topic of software governance Roland Olbricht pointed out that the Overpass API has a low bus factor. mmd added (de) > en that the existence of their fork doesn’t necessarily increase the bus factor and things other than the number of developers can help a project survive in the long term.
  • The development team behind the OSM Welcome Tool recently wrote instructions on how to use the tool (available on the tool’s wiki page) and are looking for feedback from new users.
  • Robhubi explained (de) > en the workflow they use to import data from GIP to compare with OSM. The Graph Integration Platform (GIP) is Austria’s online system for collecting and sharing transport route information.

Mapping

  • PoliMappers tweeted a suggestion to take your mapping skills to another level with JOSM.
  • Bo Percival reported on the results of an experiment carried out by HOT to compare traditional mapping with AI-assisted mapping (we reported earlier). They learnt that AI can assist and amplify the efforts of mappers to produce more map data. However, this comes with a condition: AI assistance amplifies the speed of map data creation, but does not significantly improve data quality (nor does it worsen it).
  • Gonéo continued (fr) > en their discussion on the workflow they are using to import Lyon (France) bicycle parking information.
  • Muluba, a contributor from Butembo, DRC, has published a diary entry about using the KoBo ToolBox to collect field data with a smartphone and transferring the data to OSM. He would like to discuss this subject with others.
  • Requests have been made for comments on the following proposals:

Community

  • Amanda McCann reported what she did in OpenStreetMap in November 2021 both as a mapper, and as a member of the OSMF Advisory Board and the Communication Working Group.
  • French professor Cyrille Borne wrote (fr) > en about Simon Weckert’s Google Maps traffic hack back in 2020 (we reported earlier) and the relationship between data, ethics and the physical world.
  • Christoph Hormann announced that he will no longer participate in OSMF-hosted communication channels, citing his dissatisfaction with the Board’s intentions for the moderation of mailing lists.
  • The city government of Tijuana, Mexico is interested in importing their building polygon data (es) > en.
  • UN Mappers organised last week in Valencia (Spain) the Unite Maps Conference, a meeting with 60 representatives from UN peacekeeping and special political missions from all over the world. During the conference, UN Mappers along with other UN entities (IIEP-UNESCO, UNHCR, and the World Bank), speakers from humanitarian actors (Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team, YouthMappers, Les Libres Géographes, and IFRC) and local communities (OSM Mali, OSM Somalia and OSM Democratic Republic of the Congo) presented the benefits of using OpenStreetMap in their activities and the positive impacts on communities.

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • Mateusz Konieczny answered his own question, from January 2021, by pointing to the wiki page which explains that the OSMF does not have any employees. A list of contractors hired by the OSMF is on their wiki.

Local chapter news

  • OSGeo Oceania have published their annual report for 2020–2021. OSGeo Oceania’s OSM Special Interest Group is the Local Chapter of the OSMF in Oceania.

Events

  • The call for speakers at the State of the Map US 2022 has been extended to Saturday 8 January.

Open Data

  • What does (de) > en the rapid transit system of Karlsruhe (Germany) look like to wheelchair users? This is an updated visualisation, including new underground sections opened on 12 December, of the stops in Karlsruhe (and also the rest of the KVV transit authority area) that are accessible for wheelchair users. You can move the slider back and forth to compare.

Software

  • Previously we reported that Marcelo Prates has developed Pretty Maps to render maps based on OSM data. A Chinese developer, Haoming Zhuang, was inspired by this tool and has developed pretty_gpd, which lets users of local geographic data draw similar style maps in a Python GeoDataFrame.

Did you know …

  • … [1] MyOSMatic, an easy way to generate a map of a city (also with street index) from OSM data and download it in different data formats for free? Choose from 14 different menu language options after opening.

Other “geo” things

  • Maxar shared satellite imagery of the Amazon warehouse in Edwardsville, Illinois before and after the recent tornado.
  • Despite it appearing to have been lifted straight from the SotM Heidelberg map book, Julien Coupey tweeted that he was unable to resist the Plans de Villes calendar.
  • @KartForData tweeted that Kart is now available as a QGIS plugin. You can now work with version controlled data directly within your desktop GIS – see your data history, commit incremental changes and create and merge branches.
  • Ilya Zverev noted (ru) > en the release of Natural Earth v5.0.0; a public domain map dataset available at a scale of 1:10,000,000 (and smaller).

About us

  • The weeklyOSM team thanks you for your interest and we wish you a Happy New Year.

Mapping

Imports

  • Okada Tsuneo plans to import the bus stops around Hiroshima City, Japan. More information can be found on the wiki.
  • The Spain OpenStreetMap community is carrying out an import project. The objective is to add buildings and addresses in parts of the country where they are not present, or to improve data if they already exist. They have recently started preparing a series of video tutorials explaining how to participate in the import. The first video is already available on YouTube (es) ((en) subtitles available).

Mapping campaigns

  • Marjan, from TomTom, informed us of the project they have planned in the Dominican Republic (similar to those they have carried out in many other countries). They compared their data with the data in OSM and opened a MapRoulette Challenge to check the missing roads.

Mapping

  • A Taiwan mapper 琉璃百合, mentioned (zhtw) > en the traffic light tagging issue in the Talk-cn mailing list. She believes that some Chinese mappers incorrectly tag traffic lights at road intersections, and gave some proper examples.
  • DeBigC had set targets for 2021, which he reviewed at the end of the year, and set his OSM targets for 2022. His summary is provided with interesting links.
  • User Bxl-forever made the first changeset of 2022 (UTC) according to OSMCha.
  • Martin Wieland, from the unsurv project, has set himself the task of compiling a database of already installed video cameras that is as up to date as possible. Tools for the largely automatic mapping of such electronic eyes are to help with this project.
  • Jeremy G describes (fr) in his OSM Diary the process he used in adding the ‘industrial trail walk’ at l’Argentière-La Bessée in France as a relation.
  • Johnwhelan detected a lot of mistakes after some completed projects in the HOT Tasking Manager which did not have appropiate validation and made some recomendations on how to clean up after completing a project in the tasking manager.
  • The proposal amenity=small_vehicle_parking, to tag parking locations of any kind of small road vehicle, apart from bicycles, is waiting for your comments.Voting is open for defensive_works=*, to tag military constructions or buildings designed for the defence of territories in warfare, until Tuesday 18 January.

Community

  • 48 contributors mapped every single day in 2021. Interested in more statistics? Just have a look at OSMStats by Pascal Neis.
  • User AndreyGeograf wrote (ru) > en about his experience with micro and nano mapping.
  • Janet Chapman reported on her experience with six years of ‘Crowd2Map‘.
  • OpenStreetMap Belgium’s Mapper of the Month for January is Koos Krijnders from The Netherlands.

Local chapter news

  • Cartographers from the Digne area in France wrote (fr) > en about naming and tagging practices for pedestrian trails and how different renderers show them.

Maps

  • [1] Alex (user Supaplex030) continued to explore the boundaries of the level of detail that can be rendered based on OSM data with his public space map for Neukölln, Berlin. A blog post by Tobias Jordans shows many interesting details such as cycleways, turn lanes and junctions and explains how the data is processed to allow this rendering. One conclusion is that a collaboration on pre-processed OSM data for streets would be of huge benefit.
  • Reddit user burgerking_foot shared a map showing places named Å from Katapult. Funnily enough, all of them are distributed in northern Europe.

Software

  • The software Flatmap has been renamed to Planetiler. Working in a similar way to Tilemaker it allows production of OSM-based map files in Mapbox Vector Tile format (MVT).
  • OpenMobilityIndicators has been extended (fr) > en to the whole of France. The toolbox uses OpenStreetMap data to measure pedestrian accessibility in a given area.
  • qeef wrote about the second year of ‘Divide and map. Now.‘, which, as an example, enabled a simultaneous mapathon of 200 mappers by dividing up an area.

Releases

  • Dietmar Seifert has provided (de) an analysis of how many addresses in Germany are already mapped (de) in OpenStreetMap.

About us

  • The over 10-year success story of weeklyOSM, as well as our editorial team, continue to develop but are also subject to change.
    • With new support, weeklyOSM will therefore be available from issue 595 not only in ZH-TW (Chinese Traditional) but also in ZH-CN (Chinese Simplified).
    • However, issues will no longer be published in PT-BR, as we can no longer ensure quality due to a lack of native language support. We suggest that readers use the PT-PT edition until we find someone who wants to fill this gap in the editorial team.

Mapping campaigns

  • qeef correctly stated in his blog post that ‘data quality matters’. Taking a cue from Johnwhelan’s cleanup suggestions, which we reported on in issue #598, qeef describes three steps that are useful for quality assurance to clean up the geometry of an area following a distributed mapping action when using the Divide and map. Now tasking manager.
  • Christoffs presented (pl) > de us with a new website showing all the defibrillator locations (menu and description only on (pl)) in Poland mapped in OSM.
  • Enock Seth Nyamador announced the start of an organised mapping activity in the Eastern Region of Ghana on the Talk-gh mailing list. The focus of this campaign is to add the smoothness tag to highways that have been surveyed as part of a research project in the area.
  • Following the large oil spill in Peru, the Peruvian OSM community has established two mapping tasks with its Tasking Manager to facilitate medical care in the affected region:
    • #4 Mapping of buildings (es) > de in Wachapea, Pakun, Umukai and Nazareth communities affected by oil spills.
    • #7 Mapping of access roads (es) > de to Wachapea, Pakun, Umukai and Nazareth communities.
  • UNGSC-DTLM-Ale_Zena works and maps for the UN Mappers Project. In a blog post, Alessandro expressed frustration about the poor quality of buildings added by beginners from a HOT task manager project for an extremely dense area, causing ‘another chaos in Mogadishu’.

Mapping

  • Ivan Ruggiero shared, on the Talk-africa mailing list, a problem with tagging he found in Cameroon. From an overpass query, he found more than 2000 nodes with 138 different invalid values for the place=* tag.
  • Emmanuel Jolaiya started a conversation on how to tag ‘football viewing centres’ on the Talk-africa mailing list. He describes them as a type of public football viewing centres which do not fall under cinemas or pubs/bars with television. Responses to the thread show that they are present in other African countries.
  • Mateusz Konieczny made a short summary of some interesting parts of the 2021 editor usage statistics.
  • Minh Nguyen shared his insights on how to detail school classifications, which has long been a tricky subject in OSM.
  • OSM now has over three million notes in the database. Unfortunately, note #3000000 (es) > en was closed as invalid.
  • Requests have been made for comments on the following proposals:
    • To deprecate embassy=embassy and promote embassy=yes instead.
    • New tag tourism=cabin for a small, single-unit, rentable building (or group of buildings) with few amenities designed to accommodate lodging.
  • Voting is underway for the following proposals:
  • The proposal for the new tag amenity=parcel_locker was adopted with 47 votes in favor, 12 against and 1 abstention.

Community

  • Gigi Meikle described in her very detailed article the enormous importance of mapping small isolated communities and seasonally difficult-to-pass routes to them with OSM to help Operation Fistula (improving maternal health related to labour-related fistula formation and its treatment) succeed in Madagascar.
  • OpenCage continued its interviews with members of the OSM community in 2022. In the 9 January issue, Ronald Lomora (aka Romeo from Juba South Sudan) answered OpenCage’s questions.
  • Amanda’s OSM Activity Report for December 2021.
  • MapSãoFrancisco has begun (pt) > de its projects in the Velho Chico basin with collaborative mapping of lakes and marginal floodplains in the lower São Francisco in OSM. To select the project areas that can be mapped, access can be made either through MapSãoFrancisco or through the HOT Tasking Manager.
  • Simon Poole has updated the contributor statistics reports on the wiki.
  • Thomas Straupis shared his personal and very critical opinion of OSM and its governance for discussion against the background of his participation in the ‘International Cartographic Conference 2021’.

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • Microsoft donated $10,000 to OpenStreetMap in their latest FOSS Fund award round.

Events

Education

  • b-unicycling has started a new video series on Youtube. As she reports in her blog post she will present the Derrynaflan Heritage Trail. In the first episode she maps the first buildings on the trail and shows how she created a route relation for the trail.

Software

  • GraphHopper Maps for Android is a Capacitor-wrapper (Capacitor is an open source native runtime for building web apps) for the navi branch of GraphHopper Maps, which provides directions and (experimental) turn-by-turn navigation for car, bicycle and foot. There are many known limitations for the turn-by-turn navigation feature (which are also in the browser version).
  • With his diary entry lubosb [sk] > en addresses people who come to Slovakia for tourist reasons. He recommends freemap.sk as a planning tool and OsmAnd for on-road use.
  • Manuel Reimer announced (de) > en a Firefox add-on called OSM Everywhere, which replaces maps by Google, Bing or Here with OpenStreetMap tiles on every website you visit.
  • Victor Shcherb, the founder of OsmAnd, summed up the features added in 2021 and ventures a view of what’s planned for 2022.
  • SomeoneElse presented his way of making a map-related prediction about flooded footpaths in relation to water levels measured at close upstream and downstream gauging stations.
  • wowirleben.de (where we live) (de) > en is a web project that takes OSM data, and groups the data by ‘is it relevant to a specific road?’. The results are presented in list form with a map view and it puts a focus on web links. It may become an interesting tool for checking the accuracy of links around places you know. For now, it’s only available for Germany. The website uses Google Analytics and AdSense. It is also possible to propose an entry, which can get promoted with a payment.

Did you know …

  • … that the Wikipage ‘3D Demo Areas‘ contains many links displaying 3D buildings on a large scale?
  • … the Open Etymology Map, an interactive map that shows the origin of names of streets and points of interest based on OpenStreetMap and Wikidata?

Other “geo” things

  • Matthias Maurer took Russian Orthodox Christmas as an opportunity to show two wintry Russian river landscapes from a high altitude.
  • Allan Mustard pointed out a highly interesting map of medieval Europe showing the situation in 1444 at the rise of the Ottomans. We also found a video showing the territorial development of Europe including the respective population figures from 400 BC to the year 2017.
  • French confectioner Mr. Laurent has created (fr) a topographical chocolate of Pic du Midi d’Ossau using public data from the French National Institute of Geographic and Forest Information (IGN).

Breaking news

  • Dorothea Kazazi has announced that the next OSMF board meeting will be on Thursday 27 January, at 13:00 UTC. The email contains a lot of useful information, including the agenda.

About us

  • [1] This is number 600 of weeklyOSM!
    • For the cover image, inspired by Yousuke Ozawa’s SatelliteFonts, we scanned OpenStreetMap for the alphabet. Maybe you have a letter-recognising AI to extend the list?

Mapping campaigns

Mapping

  • Supaplex expressed, in his OSM diary, his opinion about the editing of NSI objects in Taiwanese Hokkien language (not Taiwanese Mandarin). He explains that some Chinese contributors’ changeset boundaries are so big that most QA tools can not visualise the changeset, which might raise suspicions about the changeset. Unfortunately, even though the whole article is composed of Chinese characters, most Chinese users are not familiar with the Hokkien variety, and could not read the article.
  • redsteakraw presented three requests regarding the handling of POIs in OSM. His requests: 1. simple editor: 2. POIs with expiration dates: and 3. a temporary layer for POIs. These ideas stimulated a diverse discussion.
  • Clifford Snow found that Nominatim’s QA tool is very good for cleaning up existing data in preparation for building and address imports.
  • Mannivu illustrated (it) > de the creation of a custom link in JOSM.
  • G1asshouse took advantage of the comments section of Mateusz Konieczny’s diary entry, on editor usage statistics (which we reported last week), to express his frustration with some underlying issues he claims to have noticed in the StreetComplete app.
  • Requests have been made for comments on the following proposals:
  • Voting is underway on the proposal to deprecate embassy=embassy and promote embassy=yes instead, until Wednesday 2 February.

Community

  • AngocA celebrated (es) > en that all open notes in Colombia have been successfully closed and explains how he formed a working group to achieve this.
  • The OSM editor usage statistics for 2021 have been published.
  • RATP, the transport provider for Île-de-France, France, opened two new metro stations, extending its network. Less than one hour after being officially open to the public, their data was already updated on OpenStreetMap.
  • The Open Source Festival 2022 will be held as a hybrid event on 24 to 26 March in Nigeria. The call for papers closes on 26 January at 23:30 UTC. Among other things, the call explicitly applies to ‘Geospatial Technologies (OpenStreetMap, QGIS, Location Intelligence)’.

An analysis of OSM-related publications from 2016 to 2019 and seven interviews conducted with members of a research group engaged in OSM-related research are described.

Maps

  • MyOSMatic officially crossed the 200,000 maps rendered threshold, having rendered the very first test request on 3 May 2016.

Open Data

  • In GraphHopper’s GitHub repository open-traffic-collection there are URLs to traffic information portals containing open data. Maybe this is the beginning of OpenStreetMap based navigation with traffic jam avoidance?
  • The National Library of Scotland is looking for volunteers to help transcribe place names and footpaths from 18th and 19th century maps. The results will be released as an open dataset.

Mapping campaigns

  • Organic Maps presented the results of their Subway Validator. This is a regularly updated status overview of all known networks. Networks with errors might be fixed directly in OSM with the help of the metro mapping guide.

Mapping

  • roptat described (fr) > en the different methods and apps for mapping by foot and car. He concluded that for him it is most efficient to collect as much information as possible and map later on a computer.
  • Florian Lainez pointed out that there is no need to update the coastlines dramatically changed by the Honga Tonga volcanic eruption. They have already been revised in OpenStreetMap using 30 cm PléiadesNeo imagery.
  • AngocA continued his series of articles about OSM notes. In one article (es) > en he described the different types of notes one may encounter, while in another (es) > en he lists several useful techniques for resolving them.
  • Littltebtc shared (zhtw) his thoughts about the new section of National Freeway 4 and Section of Provincial Expressway No. 74, opened just before the Lunar New Year Holiday in Taiwan. He said the Taiwan community’s mapping might not be perfect due to the newest satellite images not being available, resulting in some map mistakes after the National Freeway was opened to the public. He observed that the initial mappers of new highways might not check road connections to see if they are correct, warning there might be some risk if you solely depend on OpenStreetMap data for navigation purposes.
  • kubahahaha described (pl) > en
how he was updating bus stops in the GZM metro area (Poland) from a very old style of mapping the stops as nodes on the road.
  • Should private areas used for personal leisure activities be mapped using landuse=recreation_ground? This question (de) > en
was asked on the German forum and provoked a lot of discussion.
  • The following proposals are waiting for your comment:
  • Voting has been completed for the following proposals:

Community

  • Taichi Furuhashi claims that Niantic is free-riding on the OSM community and should show its flag (ja).
  • Daniel Akor, a final year undergraduate student in the Geography Department, University of Nigeria Nsukka, reported on how his quest and passion for mapping got him into the LionMappersTeam-Nsukka.
  • Joshua Kwame Bensah-Ziwu, who helped found the Survey School Mappers and acts as its president, shared his insight about the impact of COVID-19 on a New YouthMappers Chapter.
  • OSM Fukushima members have released (ja) a video introducing weeklyOSM 588.

Local chapter news

Events

Education

  • Aman Sandhu has started a series of introductory videos for OsmAnd. While the first video introduces the app, the second explains how to plan a day trip.

OSM research

  • Moritz Schott presented a guide on how to filter OSM data down to only the data you need before starting any analyses or visualisations.

Maps

  • The Hidden Cities project will reveal overlooked or obscured histories of selected cities. At the moment it provides five primary case studies: Exeter, Valencia, Hamburg, Deventer and Trento.

Open Data

  • Microsoft has released new and updated building footprints for the United States of America, Nigeria, Kenya, South America, Uganda, Tanzania, Canada and Australia, which are licensed under the Open Data Commons Open Database License (ODbL).

Software

  • [1] After the recently accepted proposal for amenity=parcel_locker (we reported earlier), OpenStreetBrowser now includes parcel lockers.
  • OsmAnd gave away 20 of the ‘All World Maps’ promo codes for iOS and 20 promo codes of OsmAnd Maps+ for Android. Follow this link to join the next OsmAnd giveaway.
  • The HOT team has created ‘a new model for Tasking Manager that aspires to get the Tasking Manager back to its community software roots’. Now, they are offering a volunteer position ‘Tasking Manager Collective Guide’.
  • After introducing a new routing engine (we reported earlier), OpenSnowMap now renders icons where something is tagged as piste:type=fatbike, aerialway=t-bar, aerialway=j-bar, aerialway=platter or aerialway=rope_tow.
  • Hoerli has (de) > en written instructions on how to display Google traffic information in OsmAnd.

Programming

  • Amanda described, in her OSM Diary, how to find OSM users who comment on changesets but don’t contribute by editing the OSM database. She used her anglosaxon tool, about which we reported earlier.
  • osm2pgsql release 1.6.0 has been published, which is a bugfix release only.

Releases

  • Martin Raifer released an update of iD’s tagging presets: Version 3.2.0 includes a lot of improvements, new presets and fields, as well as bug fixes and translation updates. Notable changes are the update of the parcel lockers preset to the new amenity=parcel_locker tag, and the addition of a preset for crossing=traffic_signals. See the changelog for the full list of changes.
  • Pieter Vander Vennet reported that MapComplete 0.14 has been deployed. Apart from lots of bug fixes and performance improvements, a new theme showing OpenStreetMap notes has landed. The filter function should come in handy. And of course, there are plenty of (new) themes, such as the street lighting theme (thanks Robin!) or the postboxes and -offices map (by nicolelaine).

Did you know …

  • … there is a website that provides basic JOSM installation steps and troubleshooting information?

Other “geo” things

  • Sameera Khan showed a couple of European maps filled in by Americans. Could you do better with a map of Africa? Or the Americas?
  • Edward Snowden revealed that the CIA station he worked at had a large world map to teach new arrivals the location of countries.
  • Yannick Brouwer tweeted a marvellous animated map showing railway passenger traffic in the Netherlands over a 24 hour period.
  • Reddit has a post showing a comparison of the 1820 map of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, superimposed on the current city map, showing land reclamation done over the years that has contributed to the expansion of the city.
  • Jeff Foust reported on ESA’s consideration of moving up the launching of a new radar satellite after the Sentinel-1B malfunction.
  • Bartosz Ciechanowski wrote an in-depth explanation about how the Global Positioning System works, with a superb animation of the globe and the GPS satellite trajectories around it.
  • Steve Coast showed us TomTom’s latest project named ‘RoadRunner’. It is used to automatically create maps based on vast amounts of GNSS traces. One-way streets and road classes are detected automatically. OpenStreetMap is used to provide street names. RoadRunner can be explored via their web application or you can download a PBF.
  • An article in The Guardian discussed the use of maps to illustrate literary works. Apparently James Joyce was adamant that no maps should be included in editions of Ulysses: perhaps he was worried people would try and draw routes avoiding pubs.
  • Only 11 days separate these 3 satellite images! The images are of Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai island, on which a volcanic eruption occurred two weeks ago. According to an article published by BBC News, NASA believes that the eruption was hundreds of times more powerful than the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima during World War II (the eruption is estimated have been equivalent to somewhere between 4 and 18 megatonnes of TNT).

OSMERS Fukushima talk about issue 597 of weeklyOSM on Youtube
[1] | © | map data © [OpenStreetMap contributors]

About us

  • Pete Masters, Head of the Community Team at HOT, promoted weeklyOSM on Twitter and colleagues from OpenStreetMap Spain joined in. Actions recommended for imitation 😉

Mapping campaigns

  • In response to the recent enormous explosion at Apiatse near Bogoso, which leveled the entire town, OSM Ghana has created a project on the HOT Tasking Manager to help map the area.
  • Cristoffs wrote (pl) > de about the project to systematically record all defibrillators (emergency=defibrillator) in Poland. The findings have also been used to expand the Polish Wiki page (pl) > de.

Mapping

  • Christoffs recommended (pl) > de, in his blog post, ‘JOSM settings useful for editing data in Poland’.
  • On the German forum there is a discussion (de) > en about a massive retagging of churches. The goal of the retagging was to ‘adapt’ OSM to a flight simulator. Streckenkundler did the revert (de) > en of the rule breaking automatic/mechanical edits. Frederik Ramm clarified (de) > en the OSM position on the flight simulator users’ forum.
  • Starting out to systematic map solar modules, SK53 ended up with outdoor automatic rotary milking parlours.
  • Alexander Marx described (de) > en how he started contributing to OpenStreetMap with StreetComplete.
  • ‘Are maps only made by tough men in wooden ships or can you do it too?’ is (nl) > de the provocative question of TauvicR, who also wants to encourage you (nl) > de, to contribute by mapping your surroundings in a spirit of neighbourhood help.
  • TauvicR writes (nl) > de about his neighbourhood outreach activities and the need for passable sidewalks from fit to handicapped pedestrians to wheelchair users. His question at the end is ‘Does OpenStreetMap see a role in providing information about well-maintained footpaths?’
  • YouthCheese explained how he started mapping because there were too many white spots on the map in his area of interest in Australia.
  • Ilya Zverev analysed (ru) > de micromapping, in particular examples by Alex Seidel (Supaplex030), and concludes that ‘Supaplex030’s work shows that well-placed tags replace micromapping and complex geometries’.
  • miroslavuzice87 compared the before and after micromapping of Uzice, a medieval town in Serbia, and reflected on the pros and cons of micromapping.
  • Requests have been made for comments on the following proposals:

Community

  • [1] OSM Fukushima members have released (ja) a video introducing weeklyOSM 597. They also evaluated the newly proposed cartography of the official Japanese national map.
  • Episode 113 of the Geomob podcast is an interview with Dustin Carlino about OSM-based transport planning service A/B Street.
  • Mateusz Konieczny opened a discussion in his OSM diary by affirming that having deprecated or duplicate tagging schemes in use is not a critical issue to OpenStreetMap.
  • Sunil Bhattarai, from Tribhuvan University, talked about his experience with the Youthmappers mapping project in Chepang, Nepal.
  • Sam Wilson reported about the first OpenStreetMap meetup in Claremont, Perth, Western Australia.
  • Florian Lohoff refers to the contribution of Littlebtc, who points out that due to the lack of current aerial images for the validation of new roads in Taiwan, there is a certain risk in relying exclusively on OpenStreetMap data for navigation purposes. Florian, on the other hand, recommends actively using OSM routing in order to find and correct routing errors more quickly.

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • At the 27 January OSMF Board meeting, Seth Cochran and Dolly Andriatsiferana presented Operation Fistula in Madagascar. Dolly showed (fr) > en the well illustrated tutorial with gif animations of building tracing and tracing/classification of roads in the African context.

Events

  • Martijn van Exel showed in a tweet the mapping progress in Tucson, Arizona, the venue for this year’s SotM US. Minh Nguyen, in his comments on our coverage of the event in Issue 601, explained that SotM US recommends that all participants be vaccinated against COVID-19 or provide a negative test result. However, the University of Arizona (the owner of the venue) is prohibited by law from requiring vaccination as a condition of entry.

Education

Maps

  • The city of Magdeburg (de) > en now offers a map (de) based on OpenStreetMap to display public recycling bins. Unfortunately, the recycling bins are only an overlay and not sourced from OpenStreetMap.

Open Data

  • Christian Quest tweeted that orthophotos of five departments in France have been updated (fr) on wms.openstreetmap.fr (fr) > en.
  • OpenStreetMap user raibach wrote (de) > en about the Geoportal Hesse (de) > en, which has provided a lot of open data since 2019. Be aware that the available data is not licensed to be directly imported into OpenStreetMap.

Software

Did you know …

  • … Pascal Neis’ statistics page for OpenStreetMap notes?
  • … the wiki page with an overview of all the possibilities for creating high resolution paper maps?
  • … how to become a UN Mapper?

OSM in the media

  • Cory Doctorow’s latest book Attack Surface contains a reference to OpenStreetMap.

Other “geo” things

  • Xirong7 visually compared the size of south-east Asia with some states.
  • L.A. Dork tweeted about ‘One of the oddest maps of the Valley’, the ‘Hand that feeds Los Angeles’.

Mapping campaigns

  • Cristoffs showed (pl) > en some statistics on the progress of mapping defibrillators (AED) in Poland.

Mapping

  • Marjan, from TomTom, has initiated a MapRoulette challenge to add missing roads in the Caribbean.
  • Florian Lohoff is puzzled about a strange behaviour of the OSRM routing engine that he uses to monitor the road network in OSM.
  • Jherome Miguel, from Alberta, Canada, proposed developing and documenting a new highway classification scheme covering trunk roads and motorways, based on one being implemented in the USA. In Quebec, thousand of kilometres to the east, mappers are satisfied with the road classification as it is. Pierre Béland, author of Highway Tag Africa, suggested documenting (fr) > en the classification of the forestry roads, sometimes hundred of kilometres long, managed by the forestry industry. On unpaved roads, heavy trucks have priority over other vehicles that access things in these areas such as chalets, fishing, or hunting.
  • Gruff Owen started a discussion on Talk-GB about the mapping and tagging of what he called a ‘goat track’ in OpenStreetMap, which is a potentially dangerous path, and there are concerns that this could lead inexperienced walkers into dangerous situations.
  • After complaints, Vespucci is removing Bing aerial imagery for third-party builds, e.g. F-Droid.

Community

  • YouthMappers is inviting (es) > de people to a one-hour information session at 14:00 Friday 18 or 15:00 Saturday 19 February (Guatemalan time). The event is for students from Guatemala and anyone interested in starting new YouthMappers groups in Latin America.
  • On Mastodon, MapAmore summed up the result of phase two of the OSMaPaaralan school mapping project in the Philippines.
  • OpenStreetMap Belgium’s Mapper of the Month for February is Mustafa Kamil from Sudan.
  • User contrapunctus proposed a mapping event in Delhi, and got quite a bit of interest.
  • User Ziegenfritze wondered (de) > en how to best plan where to walk with his goats from Überlingen to Meißen, 583 km from Southwest to East Germany, using OpenStreetMap.

Imports

  • Sofia Kozidis announced a proposed import in Bayfield County (Wisconsin, USA) of Emergency Location Markers.

Local chapter news

  • The OSM-US February Newsletter has been published here.

Events

  • HeiGIT, the Heidelberg Institute of Geoinformation Technology, is presenting (de) a lecture on ‘ohsome quality analyst (OQT): assessing the quality of OpenStreetMap data’ at the FOSSGIS conference (de) > en on Wednesday 9 March from 16:30 to 16:50 CET.

Maps

  • Enzet has mapped the ‘Large Millimetre Telescope’ in Mexico in great detail. He created a ‘before and after’ animation in colour and with roof slopes with his Map Machine software.
  • @RandoCarto (fr) published a new hiking map. This time, you can go and hike in the volcanoes of the Puys de Dôme, France with a printed paper map made from OSM data.

Open Data

  • Pascal Neis has written a blog post comparing (de) > en German Federal Government and OSM data for amenity=police and government=healthcare in Germany (the Government data was from the Federal Agency for Cartography and Geodesy). He concluded that ‘at least in Germany’ … ‘no more data imports should take place’. Data reconciliation is, in his opinion, a promising way to improve data quality on both sides. Tobias suggested (de) > en possibilities for realising this idea.

Programming

  • Nicolas Lambert has published bertin.js, an easy to use D3.js-wrapper on GitHub, that can be used to create thematic maps.
  • A change to API 0.6 will be deployed in the near future. After the change the OSM API will reject relations exceeding a certain number of relation members (significantly more than used in any current relation). The reason for the change is that extremely large relations can cause problems to downstream data consumers. The largest current relation is Tongass National Forest, which is already too large to be visible on the OSM website’s ‘relation view’.

Releases

  • Kontur posted a Twitter thread which featured a new version of Disaster Ninja – a tool for mapping coordination and spatial analytics. It is now possible to get OpenStreetMap analytics within administrative boundaries or freehand polygons to know where to put your mapping efforts.
  • The iD editor was recently updated from 2.20.2 to 2.20.4, including various improvements such as security fixes, improvements to screen reader accessibility, enhanced preservation of the history of OSM objects, bugfixes and more. See the changelog for the full list of changes. This version of iD will be the last to support Internet Explorer 11.
  • Richard has released a new version of the Potlatch 3 OSM editor, which contains several fixes. Once running it can be invoked from OSM by remote control, just like JOSM can.

Did you know …

  • … the map farmshops.eu (de), a ‘Code for Karlsruhe’ project? You can find farm shops, markets, milk vending machines and other direct marketers between Brussels and Brno. The data comes from OSM, of course.
  • the true size of a country? After selecting a country you can move it with the mouse on a world map (Google Maps, unfortunately) in Mercator projection and it changes the displayed size according to where it is placed.
