Mapping campaigns

  • Puxan can see (es) > en a major problem for map quality in online mapathons, which, according to him, have multiplied during the pandemic. He recommends two measures to help improve the quality of data created during mapathons.

Mapping

  • Requests have been made for comments on the following proposals:
    • waterway=check_dam to tag structures placed across channels primarily to reduce runoff velocity.
    • leisure=bathing_place for places where access to water to bathe or swim is possible.
    • Survey markers to create a standard way of defining the structure and condition of survey markers.
  • Voting on the tourism=giant_furniture proposal for tagging any kind of giant furniture meant to be a viewpoint or a tourism attraction has started (till Wednesday 16 June).

Community

  • The Spatial Data Infrastructure agency of the province of Cordoba, Argentina (IDECOR (es) > en), is inviting (es) > en you to join the community and map the province in OpenStreetMap. The article was written by Ariel Antieri, a member of the local chapter of the Foundation.
  • OpenStreetMap Belgium’s Mapper of the Month for June is Ly Racky (racky) from Côte d’Ivoire.

Local chapter news

  • French user Lejun has mapped (fr), in his city, about a dozen vending machines for free menstrual products. While not being the first vending machines of their kind, they seem to be the first to be tagged so thoroughly in OpenStreetMap according to taginfo.

Education

  • Arnaud Champollion created (fr) a short video in which he shows how OpenStreetMap can be used to create simple maps. While dedicated to educational and orienteering purposes, the ideas given could be applied elsewhere.

OSM research

  • At the 12th International Symposium on the Digital Earth, Tahira Ullah, Dr. Sven Lautenbach and others will present their research, on deriving indicators for Points of Interest (POIs) and analysing mixed activities in urban areas. They will suggest a new approach that applies concepts from ecology to POIs from OpenStreetMap to quantify mixed activities.
  • Jan Pisl, Hao Li, and others are proposing a method of transferring a building detection model, which was previously trained in an area well-mapped in OSM, to remote data-scarce areas. The proposed model can detect individual buildings by generating bounding boxes around each of them which leads to a significant improvement in the f1-score. They have also presented a walkthrough on how to train your own building detectors using ohsome2label and the TensorFlow Object Detection API.

Humanitarian OSM

  • HeiGIT is updating the Open Healthcare Access Map to include all the countries of Central and South America as well as South and Southeast Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa. The application provides insights on travel times to healthcare facilities and population coverage at different scales for a variety of countries.
  • HOT has announced the Open Cities Latin America programme, a collaboration with the Global Fund for Disaster Reduction and Recovery and SwissRE Foundation.
  • Practical Action Bolivia has completed their microgrant supporting communities in mapping areas affected by forest fires in the Amazon.

Maps

  • The CargoBikeIndex aims (de) > en to make riding your cargo bike as smooth and effective as possible by helping you to find the smoothest route through motorised traffic. It categorises all the streets in Germany by their cargo bike friendliness, marking them with different colours.
  • [1] OpenHistoricalMappers mapped the boundaries of the Inca Empire, which could be the first interactive digital map of the Inca civilisation, whose expansion lasted approximately from 1438 to 1533.
  • VISOV used (fr) uMap to map alternative hotline numbers during the recent 7 hour emergency phone line breakdown in France caused by the telephone operator Orange.

Open Data

  • Supaplex found out that there were no Wikidata items for several villages in Taiwan, resulting in 74 OpenStreetMap villages having no Wikidata link. Supaplex called on the Taiwanese OpenStreetMap and Wikidata communities to take action (zhtw) to establish the missing village items on Wikidata, and link the newly added Wikidata items to the corresponding OpenStreetMap relations.
  • Christianlauer shared his experience working with OpenStreetMap data and using open data for business insights.

Licences

  • Nuno Caldeira is opening old wounds about a ‘lovely OSMF corporate member’. He says that ‘it’s been years and nothing changed regarding OpenStreetMap attribution from this company, but still “maps are at the centre”. Thanks @Strava & @Mapbox for your constant lack of respect towards our community’.

Software

  • HeiGIT presented another ‘evolution-animation’ dealing with the development of mapped buildings in Nairobi using the ohsome API, in their blog post series ‘ohsome Region of the Month’. The blog post series provides information on potential applications of the ohsome API.
  • raphaelmirc is introducing a road mapping tool in OpenStreetMap where it makes mapping in OSM very easy. The tool detects unmapped roads in OSM through artificial intelligence and makes life easier for the mapper.

Programming

  • HeiGIT and the GIScience group at Heidelberg University are releasing the R code underlying their intrinsic data quality analysis of the completeness of the road network and health sites in Jakarta. The analysis is based on OSM data.
  • As part of the Summer of Code, four people showed what they are working on to improve OpenStreetMap software:
  • Rob Grant, an open data specialist, explained how to access OpenStreetMap in R, a free programming language that allows you to analyse and visualise large datasets.

Mapping

  • [1] Voting is underway for the following proposals:
  • Deane Kensok of Esri shared that historical versions of Esri World Imagery, called Esri Wayback Imagery, can also be used for mapping.
  • User Heinz V lamented (de) > en that his efforts to encourage mappers to leave meaningful changeset comments in Nepal, rather than a string of hashtags, have had little effect. A broader analysis reveals that this issue occurs in edits across the world.
  • Christopher Beddow speculated about how the level of community participation in OSM compares with proprietary maps from Silicon Valley firms, which, like Apple recently, often focus on detailed mapping of major tech hubs such as San Francisco.
  • Voting on the following proposals has closed:
    • tourism=giant_furniture to tag any giant furniture meant to be a viewpoint or a tourism attraction was rejected with 9 votes for and 19 votes against.
    • man_made=stupa to substitute man_made=tower with tower:type=stupa was approved unanimously with 18 votes.

Community

  • LittleMaps explored in detail the sealed and unsealed Australian roads in OpenStreetMap and reflected on the effort it took to get to where the map is now.

  • OSM Fukushima (Japanese prefecture where SotM 2017 was held) mappers have published videos (ja) that talk about weeklyOSM and mapping topics.

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • The OSM Foundation is calling for volunteers to serve on a special committee to examine takeover protection.
  • Guillaume Rischard, the treasurer of the OSM Foundation, has announced the Foundation’s possible move to the EU in a long email that is well worth reading. As was to be expected, the number of comments on this issue is extremely high.
  • Board director Rory McCann belatedly summarised his OSM-related activities in March.

Local chapter news

  • The OSM UK articles of association stipulate that two directors step down each year, and as they need a minimum of five directors to operate, they will have to appoint at least two new directors. Gareth gave more information here.
  • The association of shopkeepers and craftsmen for the French town of Pontarlier have opened (fr) their data to OpenStreetMap. Information on its 500-ish members businesses is now fully integrated and up to date thanks to local group efforts. Monthly updates are planned.

  • The State of the Map 2021 Working Group is pleased to announce that the Conference Programme (9 to 11 July) is now available.
  • Christoph Hormann (Imagico) previewed his State of the Map Q&A session on ‘Understanding the Map’. To assist in this he has set up a wiki page to collect examples suitable for discussion. The same information is also available on an etherpad.

Education

  • A workshop, held by the Erasmus+ project euYoutH_OSM, explains step-by-step how to use uMap to create a map that shows locations of schools along with pictures of the schools, links to the schools’ websites, their phone numbers and social media links. This is an excellent example for developing your own projects.

Maps

  • Amazon talked with Thomas Rosen about QueerMap, an OSM based LGBTQ+ map.
  • AnyGIS (as we reported earlier) provides links to bulk download raster tiles from online maps for various apps. Not only is bulk downloading prohibited by some map providers, the maps packages provided by AnyGIS allow Locus to do so by faking user-agent and referrer headers in the requests Locus sends to map providers.
  • Nicolelaine wrote about the possibilities of displaying post offices and postboxes using uMap and the Overpass API.
  • Tomas Straupis highlighted an open source version of the Wang–Müller algorithm developed by Motiejus Jakštys. The algorithm tries to generalise lines according to cartographic requirements, such as saving or even exaggerating characteristic features.

Software

  • French group Linux Alpes is hosting an instance of OSM24 covering South Eastern France. The application aims to display opening hours of different POIs using current OpenStreetMap data.
  • The ‘Plastic Tracker’ is a tool to illustrate the fate of floating plastic 20 years from now, should you lose it today from your location or anywhere else in the world. Where will it go? How probable is it that it will reach the ocean? This tool will give you a possible answer to these questions and shows how far plastic can travel from its starting point.

Did you know …

  • Cycle Travel? It helps find the best and safest cycling routes in Europe, the USA, Australia and New Zealand. The next update features routes which avoid busy roads in many of these countries.

OSM in the media

  • Thierry Jean is co-founder and president of the AddressForAll Institute, a collaborative, open and free database that aims to collect addresses. In this interview with Geocracia, he explains (pt) > de why the best way to do this is through platforms like AddressForAll and OpenStreetMap.
  • Top Gear’s Philippines site informed us about the progress of the project to improve the mapping of Manila’s bicycle routes in OpenStreetMap.

Other “geo” things

  • Nicolas Ottersbach described (de) > en the status of the creation of a digital 3-D twin (de) of the city of Bonn.
  • Allen Downey spotted a very unusual colour ramp on a map used to illustrate a Washington Post article. One of the comments in the thread provides some explanation of its purpose: apparently this is to pick out a range of different cloud-top weather phenomena.

Mapping campaigns

  • CartONG hosted an online bilingual (FR/EN) mapathon on World Refugee Day on 21 June to map refugee locations. This event was organised jointly with MAMAPA, HuMap Trier and OSM Ghana.

Mapping

  • Wille Marcel produced some statistics about the usage of different editors in each region of the world over the past 10 years. He also provided some insights based on the data.
  • James Pain detailed what he has been mapping in the Riverside Estate, Colchester (England).
  • User Mapman029 has been concentrating their mapping on features which are likely to represent ecological corridors. Whilst doing so they remarked (fr) > en
on how few hedges have been mapped in Brittany, and invited others to join in rectifying this omission on OSM.
  • fanfouer’s proposal on substation=*, to improve power substations and transformers mixing on the same node for small substations, awaits comments.
  • Pascal Neis introduced two quality assurance features to ‘How did you contribute to OpenStreetMap?‘ profiles. They now contain some information about the user’s reverted map edits and rollbacks carried out by the user. Pascal is asking for feedback.
  • Veniamin Veselovsky wrote a blog post on ‘An Automated Approach to Identifying Corporate Editing Activity’.

Community

  • As part of the Everywhere She Maps program, YouthMappers is launching an internship match program. This will help organisations match qualified YouthMappers students who identify as women and/or non-binary with internship opportunities. Details are contained in a Google Document.
  • Jerry Clough (OSM user SK53) marked the 10th anniversary of the East Midlands local group (UK) with some remarks about the group and their meetings.
  • Pedro Tharg described (pt) > en his personal journey to becoming an OSM mapper.
  • Rob Nickerson, from OSMUK, explained how 27 million addresses in the UK could be opened up using two existing open datasets and deriving address centroids, which can then be used for mapping (e.g., using MapComplete).
  • Robhubi wrote (de) > en about why he is turning away from Mapillary and towards Kartaview (formerly OpenStreetCam).

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • Mikel Maron invited people who are part of a local chapter or a local community, putting together an organised project or developing software, to present it at an OSMF Board meeting.
  • Christoph Hormann described, in great detail the ‘good and bad things’ in the OSMF’s draft of the new attribution guidelines. The phrase ‘a few words’ in the title is no doubt intended ironically, after all there are more than 3,600 of them ;-).
  • One of the OSMF Board members has changed her name to Amanda McCann.

Local chapter news

  • FOSS4G/SotM Oceania are having a logo contest for their joint 2021 conference.
  • Jess Beutler, of OSM-US, provided advice on how OSM mapping can help emergency responders. Although the advice is pitched at US mappers, much is probably just as salient elsewhere. There are also a couple of examples of the direct benefits of using OSM in these situations.

Events

  • State of the Map 2021 is taking place online from 9 to 11 July. Here are the programmes for:

SotM 2021 is present on Twitter and Youtube.

  • From 19 to 21 September, FOSS4G-IT 2021 (it) > en will be held online, organised by GFOSS.it and Wikimedia Italia.
  • Charles Millet and Antoine Riche, from the French association Mieux se Déplacer à Bicyclette, organised (fr) > en a bicycle parking themed two-day mapping party. Through the weekend, four hundred locations were added to OpenStreetMap and more than a hundred notes are (fr) still pending.
  • Ilya Zveryev provided an overview (ru) > en of State of the Map for Russian speakers.

OSM research

  • The team at HeiGIT has written a walkthrough on how to train your own building detector using ohsome2label and the TensorFlow Object Detection API. You can find all the necessary scripts and detailed walkthrough tutorials in the GitHub repo.
  • Users of the MeinGrün App in Dresden and Heidelberg are being asked one last time to take part in a survey and provide information for possible future development. On 28 June, HeiGIT and their research partners in Dresden, will present the results of the research (de) > en and the meinGrün (de) web portal at the Dresden Land Use Symposium (DFNS). The app is based on OSM data.
  • The team at HeiGIT has published a tutorial on how to analyse which country has the longest coastline, using OSM data. They used the ohsome platform, which makes OpenStreetMap’s full-history data more easily accessible for various kinds of OSM data analytics tasks.

Humanitarian OSM

Maps

  • Randall Munroe’s xkcd cartoon featured a map of US placenames easily confused with better known places.

switch2OSM

  • Neuland21 (de) is in the process of creating a ‘forest fire app(de) > en to help Brandenburg fire departments fight forest fires.

Licences

  • Peter Wells, formerly of the UK Open Data Institute, raised some interesting points on sui generis database rights and the EU Data Act. In the Twitter thread he points to a consultation response by Paul-Olivier Dehaye, which raises issues regarding copyleft licences such as ODbL. Dehaye notes that OpenStreetMap have not responded to the CEC consultation.

Software

  • [1] NL Maps provides a natural language interface to search OSM. It’s already been tested by Jez Nicholson (director of OSMUK) and Allan Mustard (chair OSMF)
  • Miroslav Suchý created a script, greeter-osm, that sends greeting messages to new users in your region or country. It utilises Pascal Neis’s Latest OSM Contributors feed. The script is fully configurable using a config file and made to be run as a cron job. An Ansible role for easier deployment is provided. greeter-osm is based on a similar non-public script from the Slovak OSM community.
  • After a test run, user Escallic recommends mapping curved features by tracing with a mouse or a suitable touch gesture. To enable this they have released an open source patch for the iD editor. To avoid overloading drag operations this is enabled in-editor as a distinct mode.
  • Tom MacWright promises that Placemark will be the fast and powerful way to edit geospatial data.

Programming

  • The Regionalverband Ruhr has used the potential of HeiGIT’s openrouteservice (ORS) in a new QGIS extension. The tool, ‘Location and Route Optimisation of Addresses’, allows you to search and locate addresses and to find the optimal routes between them.
  • Matija Nalis has recently implemented RSS feeds to announce when the weekly created BitTorrent files (in total 428 GB) of the complete OpenStreetMap data are available to download.
  • CycleStreets have released an R package to interface with their routing API. Routes are returned with extensive metadata and, as with any client, access requires an API key.

Releases

  • The current version of QGIS (QGIS 3.20.0 ‘Odense’) was released on 18 June and is named after the third largest city in Denmark. This version has a number of data management improvements including basic support for coordinate epochs of dynamic reference systems. For a description of the other changes made you can read the change log.

Did you know …

  • CyclOSM? This is one of two bicycle maps featured as layers on the main OSM site.
  • … Anvaka has made a tool to render a map of all the streets of a city, in a free selectable two colour mode? The result can be saved for other purposes, such as printing on a mug.
  • … Erick De Oliveira Leal has a tutorial on using the Strava high resolution layer for OpenStreetMap (JOSM or iD)?
  • … the broad spectrum of services provided by the Heidelberg Institute for Geoinformation Technology (HeiGIT) in the form of technologies, projects and case studies?

OSM in the media

  • Techtimes presented the best Google Maps alternatives from a privacy perspective. Of course, OSM is number one.

Other “geo” things

  • The Guardian took a look at Cool Walks, which maps shady spots to guide Barcelona walkers along cooler routes. Cool Walks aims to help pedestrians avoid dangerous heat and find public drinking fountains. Last year we reported on a similar service for Heidelberg and Dresden.

Breaking news

  • Kai, an active mapper with disaster management expertise, shares his urgent recommendations for mapping the impact of the flooding in western Germany which happened earlier this week on 15th and 16th July.

About us

  • Erratum: The StreetCompleteness web interface that lists the completion percentage for some selected StreetComplete quests (we reported last week) was not created by Tobias Zwick, who created the StreetComplete app, but by Wieland Breitfeld (de) > en. We apologise for the error.
  • Good news: Our Korean contributor and translator, Donga Hwang aka LuxuryCoop is back from his co-literary duty (doing military service with the Air Force) and therefore our Korean edition has been back since last week. 😉

Mapping campaigns

  • TomTom have created five MapRoulette challenges aimed at checking and improving OSM for vehicle navigation. Each challenge covers a different part of Africa, and TomTom indicates that they are based on both regular OSM quality control tools, such as Osmose, and data and validations internal to TomTom. No details have been provided about how to modify the tagging.
  • Edoardo Neerhut announced on talk-au that OSGeo Oceania has allocated $2,500 AUD funding specifically for OpenStreetMap-related initiatives.
  • The Swiss OSM Association’s July Project of the Month is targetted at data improvement of campsites and overnight sites for recreational vehicles (RVs or motorhomes). Detailed instructions are available on the wiki ((fr) or (de)).
  • [1] The third UK Quarterly Project of 2021 is focused on tourism: facilities and areas of interest for visitors, such as hotels, caravan parks, public transport hubs, public footpaths, and places with historic interest.

Mapping

  • Naming the Schneeberg, an Austrian mountain, has turned out (de) > en
to be controversial. It is a steep-sided undulating limestone plateau with several summits (see this old account of other aspects of mapping in the area). The problem is that there is apparently no good way to name the whole range on OSM, and therefore some have advocated either using the name for the highest peak or appending the name of the range to the peak ‘Klosterwappen (Schneeberg)’.
  • AngocA outlined (es) > en his views on and experience with OSM notes in a detailed diary post.
  • PkBuzios blogged about his mapping progress at the Seale-Hayne campus, located in Devon, UK. The campus was purpose-built as an agricultural college about 100 years ago, and was later a campus of the University of Plymouth until teaching stopped in the 2000s.
  • [1] Requests have been made for comments on the following proposals:
    • defensive_structure=* for tagging defensive structures at all modern and historic fortifications.
    • man_made=video_wall for mapping large digital screens.
    • barrier=cycle_barrier to extend the tagging for cycle barriers in order to determine the passibility of these kind of barriers for different vehicle types, especially cargo bikes, bikes with trailers or wheelchairs.
  • Voting on the following proposals has closed:
    • leisure=bathing_place, to tag a place used for bathing and swimming, was not successful with 8 votes for, 9 votes against and 3 abstentions.
    • building=fire_lookout and emergency=fire_lookout, to tag fire lookouts, was approved with 21 votes for, 2 votes against and 1 abstention.
    • The survey marker proposal to tag the structure, condition, and purpose of a survey marker, was approved with 13 votes for, 2 votes against and 5 abstentions.

Community

  • Amanda McCann last week released her ‘activity reports’ for April, May and June.
  • The OSM Iran community mourns [fa]
a young contributor, Mohammed Reza Norouzi. (Translation is available on Twitter.)

OpenStreetMap Foundation

Events

  • Martijn van Exel reported about State of the Map 2021 from the perspective of task-based editors and MapRoulette.

OSM research

  • Oliver Fritz noted that the 2021 AGIT symposium (de) > en has accepted a new paper by a HeiGIT research team. The paper discusses a different approach to the global analysis of OSM data completeness. This is accomplished by generating reference data from demographic and socio-economic indicators, as well as sporadically available open General Transport Feed Specification (GTFS) datasets via a regression model.
  • Linda Sendlinger reported on a publication by Yeboah et al. concerning the analysis of OSM data quality for different stages of the mapping process in slums. The authors have developed four novel definitions of completeness based on the total number, length, and area of OSM objects. All definitions were formed at arbitrary timestamps, allowing for these objects to be assessed for completeness at any time during the mapping process, as well as the estimation of potential disparities.
  • Michael Szell and colleagues used OpenStreetMap data to explore the limitations of different urban bicycle network models’ growth before rendering them.

Humanitarian OSM

  • Spatial Collective, Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team, and OpenMap Development Tanzania facilitated a final workshop with key government officials to share the methodology, collected data, and had discussions on how they can use the data for disaster management and risk reduction in Ilemela and Nyamagana. The aim was to ensure that they have the data collected, update and add more data according to their needs by using free and open-source software and other cost-effective tools used in data collection.
  • Seven OSM communities in Tanzania have been selected to receive OpenMap Development Tanzania Community Impact Microgrants.
  • OpenMap Development Tanzania recently held their first workshop for potential ‘Open Skies Fellows‘ candidates. Sixteen people from different regions of mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar attended. The candidates were exposed to different technologies including drones and 3D printing. They learned how to assemble 3D printers and design, assemble and fly drones, as well as plan drone missions.
  • HeiGIT, TdLab Geography and the GIScience Research Group at Heidelberg University are collaborating on the transdisciplinary HEAL project which supports people, especially at-risk groups, during heat waves. This is accomplished by involving target groups and stakeholders, as well as by integrating public smart city data into a routing system.

Open Data

  • Geoalert, a startup, published an Open Urban Mapping update using new Mapbox satellite imagery, which is aimed at contributing to OSM. The number of extracted building footprints increased by x2.5. They explain why why Chechnya is the most poorly mapped among all the regions of Russia.

Software

  • AntoJvlt gave a few insights into his Google Summer of Code project ‘Nominatim QA Analyser Tool’, capable of analysing Nominatim’s database to extract suspicious data from it and presenting the results in a graphical interface so they can be corrected.
  • Baato announced the beta release of a tool to compare OSM mapping of a particular area at two different times, thus facilitating before–after comparisons.
  • The Android app GeoNotes creator, hauke-stieler, gets feedback from time to time and they have made some changes. Among other things, the export to GeoJSON, a list of all notes and a feedback option via email for non-GitHub users have been added.
  • goodudetheboy gave an update on the progress of the OpeningHoursEvaluator and also an outlook for the next steps.

Programming

  • rainerU showed (de) > en how to use the UNIX bash shell to download the locations of Mapillary sequences in a given bounding box and convert them to a format usable as an overlay on a Garmin GPS.
  • Ujaval Gandhi announced a major update to his Mastering GDAL Tools on SpatialThoughts (free access to course material).
  • Yunzhi, a Facebook employee, describes with examples in her blog post how Facebook uses automated validation processes to find erroneous data in OSM before creating their fork ‘Daylight’.

Did you know …

OSM in the media

  • The Addison County Independent interviewed Adam Franco, OSM contributor and creator of Curvature, a website for planning motorcycle rides on curvy roads.

Other “geo” things

  • Reddit user Morwon posted two versions of a population map of Europe where each square represents ~500,000 people,
  • OpenCage’s geoweirdness thread of the week: South Africa 🇿🇦

  • Mappers in the German OSM Forum (de) > en and on the Talk-de mailing list (de) > en discussed how to deal with the floods in Western Germany. Damaged roads which will stay impassible for a longer time should be tagged as under construction or demolished. Buildings should not be edited/deleted for the time being. Road closures for a relatively short time and closures of passable roads should not be mapped.
  • Mark Altaweel took a look at map vandalism in OpenStreetMap. They describe what map vandalism is and what strategies are used to fix it or prevent it from happening.
  • If you map in Washington state it would be worthwhile reading jake-low’s diary entry on how to use the Department of Natural Resources LiDAR in iD.
  • MKnight questioned (de) > en some of the reasons given for voting against the leisure=bathing_place proposal (we reported earlier).
  • Philippe Lacour noted that there are now more objects in OpenStreetMap than people on the planet.
  • portalaventura asked (pt) > en why Apple editors feel the need to bend streets.
  • User syntex shared a progress update on his quest to replace all the mapped buildings in Warsaw with outlines from a government dataset, BDOT10k.
  • Requests have been made for comments on the following proposals:
    • cultivated=no/semi/fully to add sub-tags to natural=scrub that could be used to further refine these bushy areas based on objective criteria.
    • tennis=wall to map tennis training walls, used to practise tennis shots without the need for an opponent.
    • headlight=* for tagging when vehicle headlights must be used.

Community

  • How many hours a day do you map? Jennings Anderson investigated how much time mappers spend on the task and concluded that while some mappers might only ever make a single edit to a map, there are plenty of ardent, dedicated editors that map like it’s their job – and for some of these mappers it might be, but definitely not all.
  • Nama wrote, as Regional Director of HOT, about the foundation and activities of the (Mobile) Open Mapping Hub Asia Pacifik.

  • The proceedings of the Academic Track at State of the Map 2021 have been published.
  • Ilya Zverev made (ru) > en a HotWashUp on the SotM, mainly impressions and about his own activity.

Education

  • AngocA answered (es) > en JuanMelo’s question ‘how do I improve the map of Colombia?’.

Humanitarian OSM

  • HOT has opened applications for their Data Quality Internship. It is a three-month, full-time, paid opportunity. HOT is looking to fill 20 positions, and women, nationals of developing countries, and members of other under-represented groups are strongly encouraged to apply. Applications close Sunday 15 August.
  • The HOT Disaster Services Team has launched a new landing page featuring a detailed projection of the task areas they are focused on mapping. The new map display is powered by Kontur.
  • HOT has opened the call for proposals for their 2021 Summit. Releases

  • OsmAnd 4.0 (iOS) has been released. It adds new features such as snapping recorded routes to roads to enable better navigation, exporting and importing of settings, data, and maps between Android and iOS devices, and fixing freezing issues on CarPlay.

Other “geo” things

  • Liberty caps – or Psilocybe semilanceata – are psilocybin-containing mushrooms that grow naturally in many parts of the world. Are you interested in finding some of them in your neighbourhood? Just have a look to this ‘Magic Mushroom Map’.
  • prawo.pl reports (pl) > en that 10 new settlements in Poland are proposed to gain city status on 1 January, 2022. Administrative boundaries of some municipalities will change as well. • [1] … and CycleStreets followed up with their own detailed blog post.
  • Some members of the OSM Discord channel have questioned the use of source=Google on various elements mapped in Haiti in January 2010. As Mikel Maron explains, this usage was explicitly permitted during the response to the 2010 Port-au-Prince Earthquake, and is documented on the wiki.
  • The somewhat vexed issue of German names in Poland has been raised again on the forum. Reference was made to the German ‘Standing Committee for Geographical Names’ (StAGN), which has a list of German exonyms (de)/(en), and the corresponding Polish institution (KSNG).
  • Trufi’s SotM presentation on their approach to mapping public transport in Nouakchott, Mauritania is now online.
  • Voting for man_made=video_wall, to map digital outdoor screens, is underway until Friday 6 August.
  • Joel Reid asked, on OSM Help, how to map a range of buildings he encountered whilst doing some remote mapping in Nigeria.
  • Reddit user Larken Young asked ‘Which part of a way that is split keeps the history?’. The answers only discuss how JOSM does it.

Community

  • Frederik Ramm reported (de) > en in the forum how a misspelled street name in OSM led to the discovery of two websites that use OSM data without attribution. The two were admonished by FOSSGIS.

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • The LCCWG Moderation subcommittee is seeking feedback on its DRAFT Process for Moderation, which would apply to both osmf-talk and talk mailing lists. Discussion is open for comments on the OSM wiki until Wednesday 18 August.
  • In the context of maintenance of the iD editor, former maintainer, Bryan Housel made some strong allegations regarding change of maintainer.

Events

  • Geofabrik extends an invitation to the next OSM Hack Weekend in Karlsruhe on 18 and 19 September. Registration on the wiki is required.

Maps

  • Alexander Tolksdorf is the creator of ‘Elektroauto Ladestationen in Deutschland’, a web application that shows charging stations for electric cars in Germany. There is also an app for Android and iOS.
  • Back in 2017 Topi Tjukanow wrote a guide to animating routes with QGIS. Using this tutorial, Joe Davies has created his ‘Optimal routes from Madrid to 800 locations across mainland Spain’.

Software

  • NextPit reviewed (de) > en the new Autobahn app released by Autobahn GmbH des Bundes (the state owned corporation that is responsible for German motorways), noting its advantages and disadvantages. After all, ‘© OpenStreetMap’ appears in the map view. That’s something. App menu entries are only in German.

Programming

  • Zohaib summarised progress made on their Google Summer of Code project over the last 5–6 weeks.

Did you know …

  • … the flosm OSM theme maps and the site (de) > en to create your own individual map themes?
  • … the open source geo data search engine Geoseer? The query for ‘OpenStreetMap’ returns this record.
  • … there is a list of OSM-based services? This is an alphabetically ordered list of projects and websites that use OpenStreetMap data. An example is the multilingual Historic Place, which offers worldwide rendering of all historical tags within OSM and additional special maps.
  • … that 237 ventilation shafts of the London Underground metro have been mapped on OSM?

Other “geo” things

  • Mapbox Horizon (Beta), now being distributed with the Navigation SDK V2, predictively delivers relevant roadway information to drivers, such as speed limits, incidents, congestion, or developer-defined custom datasets such as parking spot availability.
  • Steve Mouzon compared the similar sized areas of a freeway interchange in Atlanta with the medieval and renaissance core of the city of Florence.
  • For the cities of Gdańsk and Gdynia there are (pl) > de new road, rail, industrial and aircraft noise maps. Click here (pl) > de to go to the noise monitoring portal.
  • Twitter user Uputronics spotted that GPS is currently broadcasting that a zero second leap second will happen in about four months’ time. This is due to the ‘drought’ of leap seconds and it will have been 256 weeks since the last one was added on 31 December 2016. The same thing also happened in 2003.
  • Tomasz Larczyński, in an article for Trojmiasto.pl, described (pl) > en his quest to find the true source of the river Strzyża in Gdańsk, giving us a tour of historical maps and conducting a field survey.

Happy Birthday, Happy Mapping [1] | © Jessbeutler – 17th birthday 😉

Breaking news

  • [1] Quick, get your act together! As we go to press the OSM 17th birthday global mapathon will be underway. The mapathon starts at 03:00 UTC (13:00 Australian Eastern Standard Time) on Sunday 8 August with the OSGeo Oceania community. A different OSM chapter takes the lead each hour until 19:00 UTC (12:00 PDT; 17:00 EDT) when OSM US concludes the mapathon. Most communities have chosen thematic mapping activities.

Mapping campaigns

  • MoiraPrime pointed out, on the talk-us list, that the Amazon corporate mappers are now working on college and university campuses across the US. They appear to be making extensive use of existing campus maps, which may or may not be compatible with OSM.
  • Eiim set out their ambitious plans for mapping Oxford, Ohio.
  • OSM US are working to map playgrounds in Philadelphia. The project is a collaboration with KABOOM!, a not-for-profit devoted to improving access to playgrounds for poorer children.
  • OSM Uganda is joining with Nairobi-based social enterprise Upande to collect map data related to agriculture and food security.

Mapping

  • Frederik Ramm from the Data Working Group highlighted that automatic problem fixing can be considered to be an automated edit, and therefore subject to the automated edits policy. Andy Townsend, also from the DWG, provided an example of the type of issue that DWG is finding when contributors apply ‘tag fixes’ suggested by editors inappropriately.
  • AngocA continued (es) > en his series of diary posts on OSM Notes with advice about how to post a note in various applications and websites. The advice focuses particularly on people wishing to have their business mapped on OSM.
  • Another numeric milestone surpassed, user gpserror reported that the USA now contains over 1 billion nodes.
  • The proposal foraging=* to indicate whether or not foraging for plants/fruit/fungi etc. is permissible for a given location or plant is open for comments.
  • The following proposals are waiting for your vote:
    • cycle_barrier=*, cycle_barrier:installation=*, corners=*, deflection=*, spacing=*, opening=* and overlap=* to indicate type, design, size and width specifications for cycle barriers – i.e. barriers along a path that slow or prevent access for bicycle users. Voting is open until Monday 16 August.
    • maintained=no/yes/rarely/semi/intense to indicate how maintained a natural feature is. It is initially meant for mapping shrubbery as natural=scrub but can be used on any natural feature. Voting is open until Tuesday 17 August.
  • User SK53 blogged about two unusual pavement (sidewalk) features: deterrent paving and perforated kerbs. The former is difficult to walk or drive over; the latter helps to improve surface water drainage.
  • User SK53 also provided some detailed notes on tactile paving used in the United Kingdom, and recommends using them to estimate widths of crossings and pavements (sidewalks).
  • Simon Poole reported (de) > en that orthophotos from the SwissTopo geoportal are now available directly in the iD editor. Previously these needed to entered as a custom layer.

Community

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • Allan Mustard, chair of OSM Foundation, requested for feedback to help flesh out the draft Strategic Plan for the foundation.
  • User pnorman summarised his recent SotM 2021 presentation on the OpenStreetMap Standard Layer and who is using it.

Open Data

  • Google Research Ghana has released the OpenBuilding dataset. The open dataset contains 516 million buildings, across an area of 19.4 million km² (64% of the African continent). The data are licensed with the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 licence, which is not directly compatible with OSM.

Licences

  • OpenStreetMap France tweeted (fr) that more than 10,000 websites have integrated maps that use OSM data. For domains using such maps without attribution, of which there are over 200, a special tile is served partially replacing some map tiles.

Software

  • Mapswipe announced a new release including updated translations in various languages. Italian is newly supported.
  • WhatOSM outlined (ru) > en some developing issues with using WGS84 as a baseline for geodata, some of which we have reported earlier. These are most acute for objects located on the Australian tectonic plate which has moved 1.8 m relative to the original specification but applies elsewhere too. Most geosoftware, and data formats, including OSM, make inadequate provision for the best way to handle WGS84 coordinates, the use of epochs. For many uses, the best practice is to use a local coordinate system unaffected by plate tectonic shifts.

Programming

  • User SomeoneElse shows you how to programme a watchdog for changes to long-distance paths on OpenStreetMap.

Did you know …

  • … of the detailed map of roads throughout the Roman Empire? Known as the Tabula Peutingeriana, the existing source is a 13th century parchment map, but internal evidence, such as the presence of Pompeii, suggests the original source was compiled in the 1st century CE.

OSM in the media

  • The New York Times analysed how governments and other organisations have used geospatial data to plan COVID-19 vaccination campaigns (paywall). The article mentions a range of other purposes in using geodata and GIS during the COVID-19 pandemic by US authorities. In less-developed nations, it also features the joint mapping initiative of, amongst others, Alcis, CartONG, HOT, iMMAP and MapAction, ‘Geographic Information Management Initiative for COVID-19 Vaccine Delivery’.
  • Esquire Philippines dove deep to look at the activities of Mapbeks in providing mapping of LGBTQI+ spaces using OSM data. The article provides detailed background on three of these: the LGBT Safe Spaces Map, HIV Facilities and Support Map, and Mapbeks Stories Map.

Other “geo” things

  • Twitter user RevK reported that an emergency service in England is only accepting postcodes or what3words locations.

Arnalie reflected on how State of the Map worked from the perspective of an organiser [1]

About us

  • Mariotomo, from Panama, explained some of the problems faced by our readers in countries with poor and/or expensive internet connections. He has a relatively simple solution: using a bash script to pull items from the RSS feed which may be of interest to others. The weeklyOSM team are interested to hear of similar issues or solutions. Our aim is to reach as many as possible in the broad OpenStreetMap community wherever they are.

Mapping

  • TomTom has introduced a new QA tool. The announcement coincided with OSM’s 17th anniversary.
  • Reddit user midforty asked, on the OSM subreddit, about mapping unofficial hiking trails. They had mapped one which someone else had then deleted. Various opinions are expressed about whether this is good practice or not in the comments.
  • Requests have been made for comments on the following proposals:
    • catholic=* for a more precise tagging of the Catholic denomination.
    • transformer=* for refining power transformers classification.

Community

  • You are invited to upload photos from various OSM 17th birthday parties to the wiki.

Imports

  • Kirill Setdekov posted on the OSMF-talk mailing list hoping to make a request to import Google’s Open Buildings for Africa into OSM. The post met strong opposition by mappers in several African communities who deemed that the building footprints were of low quality and would only exacerbate poor quality edits in the region.

Events

  • [1] Arnalie reflected on how State of the Map worked from the perspective of an organiser, and made some recommendations for future online only events.

OSM research

  • Researchers from HeiGIT have studied the impact of large data imports on OpenStreetMap by comparing contributor activity both when imports are active and when they are paused.

Maps

  • RobJN recently created an MVT (Mapbox Vector Tile) layer of property data (UPRNs) in Great Britain, but many labels were duplicated. In his latest post he describes how he overcame this issue by styling the layer in JOSM. The general principles are more widely applicable to other MVT layers.

switch2OSM

  • Niceboard posted on Hackernoon explaining why they switched from Google Places to Mapbox for their Autocomplete API.

Software

  • José Juan Montes showcased the DDD project’s capabilities in generating and showing 3D scenery built from OpenStreetMap data.
  • Felix Delattre has announced a new version of mod_tile and renderd (to generate raster tile images and deliver them via a web server). At the same time the software packages have just became available in the official sources of the brand new stable Debian 11 (bullseye) and Ubuntu 21.04 (hirsute).

Releases

  • The Android version of OsmAnd 4.0 has been released. This version offers cloud backup, the ability to colour tracks by altitude, speed or slope, and other interesting new features. Note that this release introduces new subscription models.

Did you know …

  • … you can easily extract administrative boundaries such as country, state and regional borders or equivalents from OpenStreetMap using OSM-Boundaries?
  • … of the South-pointing chariot (our historical map-related item of the week)? A Chinese invention which used a mechanism to take movement of the chariot’s wheels and ensure a pointing device was always oriented to the south.

OSM in the media

  • Bloomberg CityLab reported on HOT’s various projects for mapping informal settlements (slums) in less-developed nations.

Other “geo” things

  • This week OpenCage’s geo weirdness thread returns to Europe to take a look at Belgium.
  • Whilst doing some mapping in the London suburb of Mill Hill, SK53 noticed roads named after famous scientists with one female (given) name amongst the (male) surnames.
  • Bloomberg reported that the attempt to establish a union at Mapbox failed. Although more than half of the voting employees had become union members, Mapbox opted to exercise their legal option to force an additional ballot. A majority of those voting in this ballot did not support union recognition.
  • Matt Parilla asked the rhetorical question ‘why does sunlight come from the north in shaded relief maps?’. He shows in the answering thread that it is related to how the human brain interprets light and shade to detect objects in three dimensions.

  • A long thread on how to tag recreational routes designed for multiple transport modes led Kevin Kenny to suggest that striving for a Platonic ideal of tagging is not necessary.
  • oh8mxl wrote a blog post about ‘how to check cycling mapping mistakes and fixme tags in your area’.
  • Requests have been made for comments on the following proposals:
    • A new role ‘transfer’ for recreational route relations. There is no wiki page but you can find the mail list thread here.
    • cadet=military for mapping the meeting place of a local military cadet unit.
    • club=cadet for mapping the meeting place of a local youth cadet group.
  • Voting is underway for the following proposal:
  • Voting has ended for the following proposals:
    • cultivated=no/semi/fully to add sub-tags to natural=scrub was unsuccessful with 25 votes for, 18 votes against and 2 abstentions.
    • barrier=cycle_barrier to extend the tagging for cycle barriers was approved with 31 votes for, 2 votes against and 0 abstentions.

Community

  • OSMF Board member Amanda is now up-to-date with their activity report for the month of July.
  • Discussions about using Discourse to replace the OSM forum have been happening
for some time. The French community has migrated their forum from phpBB to Discourse and also migrated (de) > en all the existing posts from the old system. On the German forum, the question is raised (de) > en how to deal with old posts (for example: NL > 60,000, RU > 260,000 and DE > 300,000) when migrating from https://forum.openstreetmap.org.
  • User mariotomo took a detailed look at the projects hosted on the HOT Tasking Manager, gathering statistics on how many have been started, how many have finished, and how long they have been active.

Imports

  • In an email from MSF, GIS officer Roxana Nazarie outlined a planned way to share non-sensitive data collected and approved by field teams with OSM. The context is that the import process is too long-winded when data needs to be shared for a rapid response. Most replies suggested that the proposed method was an import anyway, and a number of other approaches were suggested.
  • Attila Kun and Brian Sperlongano are proposing an import of West Virginia State Forests.

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • The draft Etiquette Guidelines, proposed by the Local Chapters and Communities Working Group Moderation Subcommittee, are open for comments until Wednesday 8 September. They will apply to the talk and osmf-talk mailing lists. However, the authors recommend applying them to all OSMF-run platforms (forum, wiki, and national mailing lists) as well. Comments can be written and reviewed on the discussion page.

Maps

  • In the streetscape map of Neukölln you can see how streets, sidewalks and street-side parking can be represented with OSM data. Tobias Jordans describes (de) > en in his blog post which data is visualised and where it comes from.
  • Dirk Brockmann invited people who want a global view of the COVID-19 situation to check out this visualisation.
  • Ashley Pinner and Harry Wood discussed, on Twitter, how various OSM maps show railway platforms.

Open Data

  • Since 2018 the UK government has been lavishly funding the Geospatial Commission, or at least their contractors: predominantly, management consultancies. It is therefore somewhat of a surprise that their recently published list of geospatial data from trustworthy organisations seems to have lots of gaps. Peter Wells spotted, that the report not only fails to mention OSM at all, but deems that there is no authoritative source of addresses for most of the country.

Licences

  • สุทธิสาร ปานสัสดี reflects > de on a wide variety of licensing options in the context of OSM. He asks for feedback.

Software

  • Yash Srivastava gave a final update, illustrated with screenshots, about his Google Summer of Code Project. The Nominatim Feedback Reporter will allow users to submit OpenStreetMap search (Nominatim) errors. These can then be added as test cases by the developers.
  • [1] User mmd demonstrated how a query to count addr:housenumber nodes across all EU member states, broken down by country, will run in 30 seconds on an Overpass development branch version. ATTENTION: The same query will not run on current production versions.
  • OrganicMaps (an OSM-based mobile app) has started a donation campaign to help pay for servers and fund development.

Programming

  • User mahdi1234 published a short article on building a Matrix chatbot to report statistics from taginfo in the Czech community channel #osmcz:matrix.org.

Did you know …

  • … about the Swiss cartographer Eduard Imhof? Our historical map-related item of the week. He was a pioneer of creating maps with shaded relief (as aspect of which we featured last week), and author of an influential text book. He also created, with skilled technical assistants, a number of large scale relief models, some of which can be seen in the Swiss Alpine Museum in Bern.
  • … you can keep up to date with the happenings in the OSM software world with Walter Nordmann’s software watchlist?
  • … about Pascal’s website Unmapped Places? This tool shows place tags that don’t have a road within 700 m of them, suggesting the presence of an unmapped settlement.

Mapping campaigns

Mapping

  • Anim Mouse noticed a changeset that spans four continents and contains only a single change. Although it was pointed out in the discussion that a changeset should contain as small an area as possible, sometimes it is not possible when the element itself is very large, in this case France, including its overseas territories and départements.
  • Bora Can wrote (tr) > de about his efforts to clear up divergent district boundaries in Turkey.
  • Russ Garrett summarised his thoughts on how various recently released government open datasets might be used to improve address mapping the UK.

Community

  • State of the Map Africa 2021 is happening online on 19 to 21 November. Listen to the July episode of the Geospatially podcast, featuring Geoffrey Kateregga who discussed SotM Africa and how they will bring OSM communities in Africa together.
  • Manoj, Ark, and Awantika took a look at the history of OSM Kerala and its continued efforts to strengthen the use of OSM in Kerala (India) for disaster response and community development.
  • One has learnt that Christoph Hormann’s ‘couple of words’ tend to be a bit longer than the phrase implies. His theme discussed this time is the implications of the draft OSMF Etiquette Guidelines. Although a DeepL translation to English is provided, he emphasises that this will lack nuances of the original German text: an issue which he feels affects any contributor needing to use English when it is not their native language.

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • weeklyOSM strives to notify you, our readers, about upcoming OSMF board meetings. Unfortunately, at present announcements of upcoming meetings are being made within a week of the meeting, so it is not possible for us to announce them accordingly. If you are interested in the public board meetings, you should follow the OSMF mailing list, subscribe to the Board’s iCalendar feed, or keep an eye out for them in our Upcoming Events section.
  • Former OSMF Board member Peter Barth expressed his concern about the attribution of OSM on maps provided through Mapbox services.

Events

  • The Community Working Group (Humanitarian Open Mapping) organised by HOT invites local OSM community organisers, leaders and members (new and old) to come together and share their tips, tricks and challenges related to starting and sustaining local OSM communities. Two Zoom meetings will be held on Friday 3 September at 06:00 UTC and 16:00 UTC. Register if you wish to participate.

Humanitarian OSM

  • HeiGIT is working on routing that incorporates current data from disaster areas, such as areas subject to flooding or destroyed streets. To help with the current flood disaster in Germany and neighbouring countries, HeiGIT has taken up-to-date flood data derived from satellite images by the European Copernicus Emergency Mapping Service (EMS) and integrated them into the routing services developed by HeiGIT.
  • In mid-August HOT, in collaboration with local communities in the respective regions, activated two disaster response campaigns: Haiti Earthquake 2021 and Mediterranean Fires 2021. You can check the updates here and see other active responses.
  • The Humanitarian OpenstreetMap Team (HOT) Summit 2021 Call for Proposals has been extended. The new deadline is Tuesday 31 August.
  • The finals of the 2021 HOT Staff OSM FIGHT Heavyweight Championship were held at a recent HOT all staff meeting.

Maps

  • [1] Ever wondered how old that building in Penza (Russia) is? Then this is the website for you. In addition to OSM, data from wikivoyage, wikidata and wikimapia, among others, have been used.
  • Nicolelaine is still having trouble getting their uMap of world post boxes to work, due to Overpass timeouts. Any help would be appreciated.
  • PlayzinhoAgro shared (pt) > de the results of a survey of online map use and knowledge of OpenStreetMap in Brazil.

Software

  • Recently we covered the KGeoTag application. There is a similar application called geotagging, a tool for manipulating the geographical information stored in JPEG images (Exif metadata). The geographical information could be obtained from GPX or manually by drag-and-drop. The application is packaged as an EXE or as a flatpak. Feel free to contribute translations or code.
  • Trufi’s OSM-powered bike app will put bikes at the centre of multi-modal journeys like no other app. The app will launch in Hamburg at the ITS World Conference.

Programming

  • The final reports for projects that were part of the 2021 Google Summer of Code are in:
    • Vuong Ho’s opening hours tag evaluator
    • Zohaib Ansari’s stand-alone library to display multiple versions of any selected OSM element and allow comparison between different versions
    • Antonin Jolivat’s Nominatim QA reports extraction tool.

Did you know …

  • The Panorama of the River Thames? This is a website which shows panoramic views of parts of the River Thames through Greater London both from watercolours of 1829 and photographs from the present day.
  • … that you can use OSM Smart Menu in Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox to open links related to OpenStreetMap, based on parameters from the current page? It helps OpenStreetMap contributors to easily switch between different maps and analysis tools.
  • … that LearnOSM is dedicated to helping people learn how to map in OpenStreetMap? The guides start from the basics of what OSM is and how to get mapping, through to advanced topics such as osm2pgsql and manipulating data with Osmosis.
  • … you can check out who is the busiest on MapRoulette by viewing the leaderboard?

OSM in the media

  • Woxx carried a couple of articles on OpenStreetMap. The first (de) > en is an introduction to OpenStreetMap and features an interview with OSMF Board member Guillaume Rischard. The second (de) > en article describes to readers a number of ways that they can also participate in OpenStreetMap.

Other “geo” things

Voting for the board election will start one week before the annual general meeting and this year there will be at least four positions available. To be eligible to vote you must have been a member or associate member for 90 days prior to the date on which the meeting is held, that is, paid up by Saturday 11 September.
  • The OWG is planning to host vector tiles generated by Tilemaker as an experiment. The goal is to get something others can work with to see where more work needs to be done.

Education

  • User Lübeck was seeking IBIS-Budget Hotels for a trip. They asked (de) > en for assistance in writing an Overpass query to find all the variations in naming the hotels have in OSM.

Mapping campaigns

  • Радченко Алексей invited (ru) us to participate in the OpenStreetMap markup contest (ru) > en running from 10 to 30 September. There are simple instructions and dozens of prizes to be won. Join in.
  • The OSM-US project to map playgrounds in Philadelphia (we reported earlier) was completed on 1 September.

Mapping

  • Jeroen Hoek noticed a page on the wiki relating to a proposal to regularise the tag china_population. The tag seems to designed to change the way some larger cities in China are rendered.
  • The authorities of the French commune of Torsac have recently completed a project to name streets and assign house numbers. Wilfried, a commune representative, asked (fr), on the OSM-FR forum, why these addresses and street names do not yet appear in OSM. The answer turned out to be somewhat complex, as the long thread in the forum shows. However, the issue was resolved by Christian Quest.
  • Andrés (User AngocA) from Bogotá explained (es) > en in a diary entry how to analyse Notes and how, if there are many Notes open in the area of interest, you can develop a strategy to close them.
  • [1] User Lejun has written up some interesting tips for mapping individual parking spaces.
  • Monika Tota asked (pl) members of the OpenStreetMap Polska group how they tag properties that are somewhat subjective, like smoothness=good vs intermediate or wheelchair=yes vs limited. People responded with many methodologies they use, pointing out that reality often resists clear-cut classification and that this question is related to the issue of cartographic generalisation.
  • Voting is open until Sunday 19 September for the proposal club=cadet, intended to be used to map the locations where various Youth Cadet groups meet, together with details of each group.

Community

  • User Assange expressed their dismay at mapping changes in China and Taiwan which they perceive to be politically driven. For example, is this a vacation school or concentration camp?
  • GeOsm has launched its open-source, globally distributed map database service for countries around the world.
  • JaLooooNz wrote a diary entry about the use of service=driveway and the ‘need’ for a service=residential_driveway.
  • OpenStreetMap Belgium has chosen Constantine Tumwine from Tanzania as Mapper of the Month and interviewed him.
  • Noé discovered (fr) that a town in Ivory Coast with a population of over 30,000 bears his first name, Noé. It wasn’t mapped on #OpenStreetMap, so he took care of it.
  • Feye Andal shared that Youthmappers in the Philippines grew from four to nine local chapters in just one year.

Humanitarian OSM

  • HOT published their Annual Report for 2020 (covering the period from July 2020 to June 2021). Note the report is large and may load slowly.
  • The Open Mapping Hub – Asia Pacific, organised by HOT, is launching a newsletter to share highlights of open mapping projects, communities, and opportunities across the region and invites you to subscribe.

Maps

  • SmokyMountains.com has released a 2021 Fall foliage prediction map showing the progressive change of leaves’ colour through the USA.
  • Tif.hair used (fr) > en data from the French national statistical institute, INSEE, in order to map 4,000 hairdressers in France with, mostly bad, puns in their names. While using OpenStreetMap as a baselayer, clicking on a shop marker links to Google Maps.
  • The Ordnance Survey, Britain’s national mapping agency, withdrew support for OS Open Space on 31 August. OpenSpace was launched in 2008 using OpenLayers. OSM’s founder, Steve Coast, worked as a consultant to the OS on the initial project. Replacement services continue to be available via the new hub, but a number of existing applications and websites no longer work.

Open Data

  • After a small pilot project in 2017, the Church of England announced their intention to map graves in all 19,000 churchyards in their care. The mapping, funded by Historic England, the National Lottery Heritage Fund and Caring for God’s Acre, uses LiDAR and is expected to take seven years. It is hoped that the resulting data will be open.

Software

Programming

  • Christian Quest wrote (fr) > en about his summer work on optimising performance for the new French tile server.

Releases

  • Bryan Housel announced release 1.1.7 of RapiD, including bugfixes and validation improvements.
  • A September release (2021.09.01-6-android) of Organic Maps on Android is now available on Play Store.

Did you know …

  • OSMCha is a tool for checking OSM changesets for data quality? The tool was developed by Wille Marcel in 2015, and Wille remains the maintainer.
  • … that you can find user names or the user id associated with a partial user name using Who’s That? Particularly helpful if you can’t remember how a user name is capitalised.

OSM in the media

  • Natfoot provided an audio-visual version of weeklyOSM 580 on YouTube.

Other “geo” things

  • The Guardian previewed the new book Atlas of the Invisible by UCL geographer James Cheshire and graphics designer Oliver Uberti. The book contains many visualisations of geographic data relating to climate change.
  • Episode 84 of the Geomob podcast featured Dave Gee, creator of hand-drawn Doodle Maps.
  • OpenCage’s latest #geoweirdness thread is focused on Canada.

Castle Dossier Map Switzerland [1] © IFS Geometa Lab | map data © OpenStreetMap contributors

Mapping campaigns

  • The Swiss OSM Project of the Month for September is the mapping of electrical vehicle charging stations (de) > en.

Mapping

  • A long thread on the Swiss mailing list, split over several months, discussed how to map the border between Switzerland and Italy around Monte Generoso, where the precise line is uncertain. Earlier discussions occurred in July and August.
  • John Stanworth wants to further improve his mapping of smoothness=* and mtb:scale=* and asked other cycling contributors for comments on his views.
  • Hiddenhausen asked (de) > en, on the German forum, what the use of the tag landuse=street_green might mean. It appears to be an ad hoc attempt to refine the use of landuse=grass for grassy highway verges and medians.
  • Voting is underway, until Saturday 25 September, for headlight=* to reflect the legal requirement on some roads to use your headlights.
  • SK53 clarified with examples that, in his opinion, there is widespread misuse of the sac_scale=* tag for real alpine climbing routes, which the Swiss Alpine Club grades with a completely different scale.
  • User Koreller asked for feedback on their contribution a guide to mapping North Korea available on the OSM wiki.

Community

  • Amanda McCann shared with us what she did in OpenStreetMap during August 2021.
  • Numerous OSM contributors have received ‘friend’ requests through the OSM website which appear to be phishing attacks. Not surprisingly this has received comments on the German forum (de) > en
    and OSM subreddit.

Imports

  • Marius David (marius851000) intends (fr) > en importing open data about restaurants in the Pays de la Loire (France), and he is seeking inputs on how to do it before starting.

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • Simon Poole justified his insistence that the OSMF register trademarks, whilst he served on the LWG, by referring to a recent trademark debacle involving PostgreSQL. A Spanish not-for-profit registered ‘PostgreSQL’ as a mark in Spain, and has recently applied for broader coverage in the European Union and USA. The latter application was recently abandoned, but the ‘PostgreSQL Community’ is still live.

Education

  • The UN Mappers team has announced the launch of an internship programme. Several open positions relate to OSM in mapping and feature extraction, social media and communication, geospatial analysis, and map visualisation and design. The internships are fully remote or in-person at the UN duty stations in Brindisi (Italy) and Valencia (Spain), and are open to all nationalities. These internships are an opportunity to work in an international environment, gaining experience and developing high skills in the humanitarian field. The deadline to apply is Saturday 9 October.

Humanitarian OSM

  • The monthly HOT Tech Working Group meeting has been put on hold. The hot_tech team has convened a number of working groups specific to individual technologies or projects such as the OSM Galaxy Project. Anyone who wishes to participate in these is requested to fill out a form.
  • HOT announced the appointment of Dr Ibrahima Cisse as Director of the Western and Northern Africa Open Mapping Hub.
  • The Open Mapping Hub Eastern and Southern Africa (ESA), organised by HOT, announced a range of Open Mapping grants. Expressions of interest are invited immediately, with formal proposals expected during October.
  • The HOT Quality Control and Assurance Working Group have developed and released the ‘Problem User Escalation Document’, which outlines the steps in escalating data quality problems encountered with users (mappers/validators).

Maps

  • [1] The Institute for Software at the Technical University of East Switzerland (IFS OST) invites (Video (en)) us to check out their video regarding mapping technology for the Castle Dossier Map The video forms part of an entry for the Prix Carto of the Swiss Society of Cartographers.
  • Jaisen Nedumpala reported on how he used OSM to help map a 3 km buffer zone during the recent Nipah virus outbreak in Kerala (India), with the personal support of Heinz_V from Germany and OSM contributors from Kerala.

switch2OSM

  • Sustrans, the UK cycling infrastructure charity, asked for local input for improving a national cycle route in the city of Durham. Gregory Marler’s (user livingwithdragons) advice, given somewhat tongue-in-cheek, was to switch to OSM.

Programming

  • The momepy Python library for analysing urban form is now at version 0.5.0. Of particular interest is the addition of the COINS algorithm for classifiying street hierarchies.

Did you know …

  • … what the charging regime is for using the HOT Tasking Manager? Also known as the Tasking Manager Sustainability Model.
  • … there is a page on the OSM Wiki for noting sites that use OSM but don’t provide correct attribution?
  • … that OpenCage post geographical trivia via Twitter on the last Friday of each month (hashtag #fridaygeotrivia)?

Other “geo” things

  • The Colorado Department of Transport falsely changed the status of an open road to closed, not only on their own site (albeit briefly), but directly on Google, Waze, TomTom and AppleMaps. A major highway Interstate-70 was actually closed due to mudslides, causing an increase in traffic on a minor road. The fictitious road closure was meant to discourage further traffic build-up.
  • Using the example of the ‘Chinese Name of Lidl’ Yunus reflected on the challenge for western companies to select a Chinese name for their brand.

b-unicycling: Survey → StreetComplete → Notes → Editor → OSM Data [1] © b-unicycling | map data © OpenStreetMap contributors

Mapping

  • Requests have been made for comments on the following proposals:
    • natural=fumarole to map an opening in a planet’s crust, which emits steam and gases.
    • outlet=* to map culvert or pipeline outlets with more details.
    • historic=creamery for tagging an industrial building where butter, cheese or ice cream was made from milk.
  • The proposal club=cadet, intended to be used to map the locations where various Youth Cadet groups meet, together with details of each group, has been approved with 15 votes for, 0 votes against and 1 abstention.
  • [1] Anne-Karoline Distel aka b-unicycling, an Irish craftmapper, showed in a video how to capture details of vacant properties in OSM. When walking on site, she uses StreetComplete to leave notes in OSM, which she then edits in iD.
  • Carl Myhill complained to Komoot that it was routing cyclists in Richmond Park (London) on paths where cycling is forbidden, and subject to a £60 fine. Komoot requires formal notification of such issues and this was provided by the Royal Parks. In the UK ways mapped as track, service, or path cannot be assumed to allow any access mode other than private without other explicit tagging. Komoot, however, does not follow these defaults.
  • Over a period of five days, participants of University Battle Mapping 2021 mapped over 93,000 buildings in Indonesia.
  • Barry McGuire suggested a large scale revision of how the highway=trunk and highway=primary tags are used in the UK, including an associated proposal on the wiki. Unfortunately, instead of assessing feedback on the mailing list, and the wiki, he made a number of edits following his new scheme. Judging by changeset comments these were not popular and have now been reverted.
  • On the forum NicoHood asked about using the class:bicycle key for the left and right sides of highways. Most responses suggest using alternative, more objective, tags.
  • LysSioS reported (fr) > en
that they have finished mapping addresses in the commune of Alès. Mapping rural addresses proved to be much more time consuming than urban ones.
  • mariotomo described in detail how to capture missing road sections using Strava’s low-res heatmap. However, he notes slightly ironically: ‘The mapping practice described here is completely manual, and its speed is obviously inversely proportional to the desired precision’.
  • mdroad has come up with a decision matrix for classifying roads. For beginners, the wiki pages Highways and Highway_tagging_samples/out_of_town with their pictures are also very helpful.
  • Reddit user sporesofdoubt has now completed micro-mapping the 183 city parks in Phoenix, Arizona over the summer (we reported them reaching the 100 park milestone earlier).

Community

  • The recordings of HOT’s webinar Local OSM Community Building: Tips, Tricks and Challenges are now available.
  • cmoffroad outlined their experience of being a new OSM mapper in Thailand. AlaskaDave, nitinatsangsit and Bernhard Hiller tried to ease the frustrations of the beginner with their local knowledge.
  • Free Local Mappers from Guinea, in its drive to promote GIS and openness of spatial data, recently conducted(fr) > en a series of GIS and remote sensing training sessions for employees of an international firm based in Conakry.
  • The State of the Map conference has begun uploading videos from July to YouTube and media.ccc.de. The talks that had audio translations into other languages will be uploaded when they have been finalised by the volunteer translators.
  • Trufi Association has hired a staff of five professionals, graduating from the public transport mapping organisation’s two-year run as an all-volunteer NGO.
  • User Tirkon complained (de) > en, on the German forum, about OSM tiles not refreshing. The ensuing discussion covers a lot of ground regarding how map updates get to users’ screens.

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • The Engineering Working Group of OSMF is looking for people with knowledge of the technologies used in OSM’s key systems: Rails port, Ruby on Rails in general, and the cgimap implementation of the OSM API. Knowledge of user interface design would be also welcome.

Humanitarian OSM

  • OSGeo and HOT signed a memorandum of understanding with the goal of fostering the use of open-source geospatial software, to enable participatory community-driven development.

Maps

  • The French air quality observatory ATMO’s Atmo Data released (fr) a map showing measured data nationwide which uses OpenStreetMap as a baselayer.
  • Tracestrack is inviting people to trial its tile service. Users can do this for free until March 2022. The map is based on the OSM-Carto style, with some unique characteristics: support for several extra tags, such as highway=busway, embankment=yes, and landuse=aquaculture, semi-transparent highway areas, separated language labels and 3D buildings. Unfortunately the appropriate attribution is hidden.

switch2OSM

  • SomeoneElse has provided additional documentation for building a tile server on Ubuntu 21.04. This is not a long-term support release so Ubuntu 20.04 LTS is still the preferred platform for production. He also notes a couple of issues which may occur whilst following these instructions.

Open Data

  • The website datos.gob.es, a platform where the Spanish government promotes open data, has included (es) the Organic Maps (es) > en app in its catalogue, highlighting that it is an open source app and is based on OpenStreetMap data.

Licences

  • Owen Boswarva reported that open data on power infrastructure in the UK are scheduled for release in October. Jo Walsh (ultrazool) asked about which licence would be used, resulting in a short discussion about the suitability of various open licences for non-government open data.

Software

Programming

  • The Overpass API Python Wrapper project is looking for a new maintainer. Martijn van Exel started this project 7 years ago, but he has indicated that he does not have the time to maintain it any more. The project has been starred on GitHub more than 260 times.

Did you know …

  • … the English county of Devon has adopted special notation on road signs? The goal is to indicate that specific roads or routes are not suitable for various types of vehicles, including those towing caravans.
  • … the wiki page on homonymous keys? The page is largely maintained by Minh Nyugen, and it identifies keys that mean different things according to how they are used.
  • … the complete tools collection for OpenStreetMap built by Pascal Neis?

Other “geo” things

  • GeoHipster is planning to publish a calendar again for 2022 and is asking for submissions of your maps.
  • Ars Technica reported on new technical analyses of the Vinland Map (of the North American Atlantic coast), long suspected of being a fake. The new data remove any residue of doubt that it is, indeed, a fake. X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy was used to analyse the elemental composition of the entire map. This confirmed the presence of titanium dioxide, a pigment which only started being used in the 1920s, throughout the lines and text of the map. A true medieval gall ink would have had considerable quantities of iron instead.
  • Jdanni’s diary is less about whether smartphone track logs pollute the OSM map, but much more about GNSS position accuracy in various scenarios reported in the links.
  • The Thermal Energy Company of Gdynia has published (pl) > en
a map showing thermal energy losses across the city and adjacent communities.
  • Yarik32 has written (ru) > de a tutorial on how to create OSM-based memes using Overpass Turbo and QGIS.

Nadace OpenStreetMap

  • Technický tým OSM oznámil nové servery, které byly instalovány v irském Dublinu.

Události

  • Francouzská komunita OSM spolupořádá (fr) aktivity pro oslavu svého desátého výročí.

Vzdělávání

  • Gregory Marler vytvořil video průvodce, kde vysvětluje, jak přidat do OpenStreetMap kostely, mešity, synagogy, chrámy a další místa pro uctívání. Používá k tomu Field Papers a editor iD.

Mapy

  • Několik profesionálních geologů a vulkanologů na Twitteru komentovalo rychlost mapování během aktuální vulkanické erupce na La Palma.

Software

  • Trufi vytvořil aplikaci pro plánování cest ‘ve všech režimech na jedno kliknutí’ — auto, spolujízda, taxi, autobus, vlak, sdílení kol, nákladní kolo, osobní kolo a další.
