V sobotu 16. února se konala první spontánní demonstrace s asi 1000 účastníky v Kolíně nad Rýnem. Akce si všimlo i Heise Online a přináší reportáž (automatický překlad).

    • 27. března v Bruselu, Lovani, Nové Lovani a Monsu,
    • 28. března v Bruselu, Lutychu, Namuru a Gentu,
    • 30. března v Nové Lovani a Lutychu.

Mapy

  • Lukas Loos z HeiGIT představil první beta verzi programu OpenStreetMap History eXplorer (ohsomeHeX). Používá ohsome (OpenStreetMap History Data Analytics Platform) pro agregaci OSM dat o prvním použití zvolených vlastností do sady celosvětových hexagonálních mřížek v nastavitelném časovém rozlišení.

  • New York Times použili OpenRouteService API pro zjištění vzdáleností chůze od hlavních stanic metra v New Yorku pro svůj analytický článek “Kde metro omezuje občany New Yorku s handicapem”.
  • Dmitry Filippov, student oboru “Informační technologie a aplikovaná matematika” na Moskevském leteckém institutu, vytvořil startup “Heavy Geeks”, kde přetransformoval mapu celého reálného světa do hry “Parallel 42”.

OSM CZ

Zkopírujte odkaz a napište nám zprávu!

(Nabble)

  • 20. února byly uzavřeny nominace pro volby do rady OSM US a pět křesel tak bude obhajovat pět lidí.
  • Mapperem měsíce února 2019 byl belgickou komunitou vybrán Volker Schmidt (OSM voschix). Přispívá do OSM téměř devět let a nedávno byl aktivní v okolí italské Padovy, kde momentálně žije.

Nadace OpenStreetMap

  • Byli oznámeni vítězové mini grantů z akce Open Data Day, které vypsala organizace Open Knowledge.

Nová verze dovoluje svým uživatelům sdílet stopy v zadaném časovém rozmezí a zaslat svou pozici s časovačem (například přestat zasílat aktuální pozici po uplynutí zadaného intervalu).

  • … o LocalFocus-Batch-Geocoder? Tento geokodér používá data z OSM, OpenAdresses a Who’s On First a k jeho ovládání je využito copy-and-paste (zkopíruj a vlož) principu.

About us

  • We have good news! weeklyOSM will have a version in Brazilian Portuguese (pt-br), aimed mainly at the Brazilian community. Collaborators are welcome! Please contact us if you want to help.

Mapping

  • Yuu Hayashi postponed the start of voting for the proposal of Japan Tagging/Road Type. As the content of the proposal has changed due to the discussion, he has asked for further feedback.
  • Mateusz Konieczny created wiki pages for tiger:CPI, tiger:CLASSFP, tiger:FUNCSTAT, tiger:LSAD, tiger:MTFCC in an attempt to document unclear meaning of these tags since each is used more than 22,000 times. Anyone aware of the meaning and use of any of these tags is welcomed to contribute. Currently all of them are described as “it is dubious whatever it should be present on any object”.
  • The recently released version of JOSM now complains about a popular imprecise tag shop=yes, used over 149,000 times despite better tagging usually being available. In the next release, available as JOSM-latest, there are some other new warnings, for example about: leisure=nature_reserve on nodes, boundary=administrative and landuse=residential tagged on a single object and suspiciously narrow highway=pedestrian.
  • The proposal for the key departures=, which was designed to indicate the departure times for any given stop, was declined.
  • The proposals for natural=peninsula and natural=isthmus have both been approved.

Community

  • Issues with attributing OSM when using our data are nearly as old as our project. Richard Fairhurst addresses the issue of non-compliant attributions in a comprehensive post on the mailing list. Based on the responses it appears that the issue is not that important for other mappers or they are resigned to current practices. (Nabble)
  • The annual general meeting for the Swiss OpenStreetMap Association will take place on Saturday 30 March 2019 in Basel, Switzerland.
  • On the occasion of the OSM France’s donation campaign (we reported) ZDNet presents the OSM project under the title “Small fundraising for large project”.

Imports

  • Giovanni Cascafico announces the planned import of Italian fuel stations using a dataset from the Ministry of Economic Development (Ministero dello Sviluppo Economico).
  • Microsoft has released 12,663,475 computer generated building footprints for Canada under the Open Data Commons Open Database License (ODbL). Canadian contributors signal problems that need to be fixed before import. Please discuss it with the community if you plan to use the data. This follows the release of 125,192,184 building footprints for the USA some months ago.
  • After the Digiroad Bus Stop Import by the Finnish Transport Agency (FTA), the Helsinki Region Transport Authority (HSL) is now also planning an import of stop positions in the Helsinki region and announced their intention in the Finnish OSM forum. Further information can be found on the corresponding Wiki page.

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • The minutes of the OSMF board meeting on 20 February were published. They discussed the GlobalLogic issue, Brexit, the 2019 budget, and whether the Etiquette page should stay on the editable OSM wiki.
  • FOSSGIS e.V., the German OSMF chapter, will fund (de) (automatic translation) the operation of the server infrastructure for openstreetmapdata.com, a data download service provided by Jochen Topf and Christoph Hormann.
  • OpenStreetMap UK reports about the success of their Talent Directory as Andy Mabbett delivered an OSM training event for Open Data Manchester. They hope to announce further exciting projects which any UK-based user can join here.
  • Kate Chapman, from the OSMF board, sent an email to all OSMF members and announced a “regular update email to help OSMF members to stay on top of all the latest”. Kate mentioned the following points in her email: OSMF Updates – February 2019, links to the web pages of the Working Groups, the Board of Directors, the Local Chapters and the Advisory Board, and she also mentioned the page where the previous reports can be found.
  • The association OpenStreetMap France has published (automatic translation) a post explaining the services provided by the association. It also gives an idea of the change in the demand on their servers and tries to explain its variation.
  • The minutes of the Membership Working Group meeting of 22 February have been published.

Events

  • Impressions and recordings of the lectures of last year’s State of the Map Asia, in Bangalore, have now been published.
  • OpenStreetMap is offering scholarships to attend the State of the Map 2019 in Heidelberg thanks to funding from sponsors. Three levels of scholarships exist and you can apply until 30 March 2019.
  • The call for participation for the State of the Map 2019 is now open. If you can contribute with a talk or presentation for one of the tracks: OSM Basics, Community and Foundation, Mapping, Cartography, Software Development, Data Analysis and Data Model, or User Experiences you are asked to submit a proposal by 25 April 2019. Two innovations need to be highlighted:
      1. The track “OSM Basics” for presentations intended for people not overly familiar with the OSM ecosystem (20 minutes – like most other lectures), and
      1. The category “Extended lecture” for “Great ideas” (40 minutes).

Presentations for the “Academic Track” can be submitted until 30 April.

  • Melanie Eckle reported about two OSM related events during the International Week against Racism in Heidelberg. On 11 March the Mamapa project is being introduced (teaching immigrants about humanitarian mapping) and on 21 March there is a related mapathon.

Humanitarian OSM

  • HOT is asking advanced mappers using JOSM to map buildings in the Colombian region Barranquilla to prepare for a refugee influx from Venezuela as the political situation continues to deteriorate. The call is limited to experienced mappers due to problems with some pre-existing errors from prior mapping.
  • HOT is offering a job as an “Advisory Board member” focusing on finance.
  • The Heidelberg University details the past and future of MapSwipe, an app for phones that can be used to map human settlements from satellite imagery. During the past 2.5 years the app has helped to identify places that have not been mapped so far. The team is currently working on extending the scope to allow the mapping of individual building footprint geometries.
  • CartONG and 510/ Netherland Red Cross have measured the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 2.8. “Achieve universal health coverage” in DR Congo and Malawi using the openrouteservice isochrone API to assess the accessibility of health centres. They also developed a demo dashboard using openrouteservice for that. More info.

Maps

  • [1] Sara Acosta investigated (es) (automatic translation), on eldiario.es, an image of the cycleway infrastructure of Europe, that is often shared on the Internet, and why this version, created from OSM data, is incorrect. By contacting Andy Allan, developer of OpenCycleMap, she found that the exact origin of the graphic is uncertain. The OpenCycleMap presents the existing OSM data in much more nuanced manner.

switch2OSM

Open Data

  • After a two-month competition, OpenStreetCam now has more than 2.2 million images in Australia and New Zealand. The Telenav Map Team used these contributions to train OpenStreetCam so it can now automatically detect more than 80 sign types specific to those countries.
  • Esri revealed in the ArcGIS Blog the possibility of displaying large datasets in 3D using the ArcGIS API for JavaScript. This removes the previous limit of 2,000 objects. The article explains, with examples, how to create a 3D map overview with OSM data.

Software

  • HeiGIT introduced openfuelservice. This new service offers close to “real world” estimations in terms of fuel consumption (gasoline and diesel), emissions (CO2, CO, NOx, THC) as well as cost assumptions for a growing number of car models. A first experimental version has been integrated into openrouteservice maps. This way you can check for the ecological footprint of your planned route. At the moment it is using a combination of data from the British “Vehicle Certification Agency” and the steadily growing “Open Citizen Science Platform” enviroCar.
  • The OSM Tools plugin for QGIS has been superseded by the ORS Tools plugin. Nils Nolde points out the various changes that have been made to the plugin besides the name change. Emphasis is placed on the revamped GUI. The plugin integrates Openrouteservice APIs into QGIS.

Programming

  • In his OSM diary user kastellano presented the project Videomapia. It combines georeferenced videos on YouTube in a map view with an OSM layer. The stored trips are displayed as an overlay and make it possible to exactly start the videos at the selected location.
  • The OpenLayers project has asked for donations for work on version 6. Of the USD 300,000 collected so far, USD 150,000 have come from Swisstopo.

Releases

  • Quincy Morgan announced the update of iD to version 2.14.3. The new version allows the user to toggle validation rules on and off, improves validation functionality, fixes five reported bugs and brings some more improvements.
  • A new stable version of JOSM has been released. Version 19.02 mainly introduces support for Canadian English and adds a new function for calculating distance to the nearest GPX point, as well as various other minor enhancements.
  • Tilemill 1.0.0 has been released and is a reunion with the fork Tileoven by florianf. Tilemill was originally developed by Mapbox as a development environment for CartoCSS styles, before they switched to JSON-based styles and a proprietary software-as-a-service platform called Mapbox Studio and left Tilemill to its own devices.

Did you know …

  • … freemap.sk, the open, interactive map of Slovakia based on OSM?
  • … the campaign “Fridays For Future”, the Friday protests of students across Europe which were triggered by the 16 years old Swedish activist Greta Thunberg? The interactive map is based on OSM.
  • … the difference between cycleway= opposite and cycleway = opposite_lane? Both indicate that cyclists are allowed to ride in either direction down a one-way street. “opposite_lane” additionally adds that the cycle lane is marked.

Other “geo” things

  • Clemens Jacobs has been looking into the data quality of citizen science observations of organisms. This research aims at using geographic context as an information source for estimating the plausibility of an observation, e.g. of a bird, which was reported to a citizen science portal collecting such data from volunteers. To this end, approaches were developed which use OpenStreetMap to capture the geographic context. He used the ohsome, OpenStreetMap History Analytics platform by HeiGIT, to predict the plausibility of a new observation of a species.
  • For the online magazine CityMetric, Henry Dyer looked at London railway stations that cross borough boundaries. Using OSM data he consolidated his findings into a short list.
  • The website Sketchplanations illustrates the coastline paradox in a short sketch in its weekly edition.

Uploadfilter – Article 13 EU Copyright Directive

  • Michael Reichert announces that openstreetmap.de will again protest against Article 13 of the EU Copyright Directive. (de) (automatic translation)
  • Heise Online reports (de) (automatic translation) that the German Wikipedia will be turned off for one day on 21 March as a protest against article 13 of the new EU Copyright Directive.

Mapping

  • Following the decision to cease rendering leisure=common in OSM’s main map style Carto, a replacement is being discussed on the HOT mailing list. Apparently the requirements for the replacement are not too difficult; as Andrew Buck wrote “I would accept anything the community comes up with as long as it renders or the rendering rules are updated before the change.”
  • François Lacombe announced on the tagging mailing list the start of voting for the proposal to improve the tagging of substations and the network hierarchy in general.
  • The proposal for highway=via_ferrata and via_ferrata_scale=* for tagging protected climbing routes in the Alps and certain other locations has been rewritten. Comments and suggestions are welcomed.
  • SK53 wrote on his “Maps matter” blog about mapping roof-top solar panels in Nottingham, UK. He summarises what he learnt and makes some suggestions for finding them in other places. Also mcld found that solar panels in London were harder to find. Both activities arose because of an animated discussion on Twitter, initiated by Jack Kelly, about using machine learning to find solar panels.
  • naoliv announced in his user diary the availability of a new JOSM layer specific for Brazilian street names, which can be used to take over street names from IBGE‘s Base de faces de logradouros. In his post he explains the issues with the previous solution and how the new layer can be used.
  • raphaelmirc explains how to use MapRoulette. (automatic translation)

Community

  • We recently reported about the issue of non-compliant attributions by OSM data consumers. Our commentary suggested that, based on the responses, it appears that the topic is not that important for other mappers, or they are resigned to current practices. However, we heavily underestimated the momentum the topic gained after writing the text and we missed the chance to incorporate the feedback right before publishing our last issue. We’re sorry for our oversight.Martin Koppenhöfer is right when complaining about it. The responses on the missing attribution are noteworthy. For example, Paul Norman points to the fact that sometimes users of our data find room for their logo but not for the attribution required when using our data. Martijn van Exel provided an example how to attribute even on an iPhone screen. Simon Poole adds that the majority of data consumers are providing acceptable attribution or at least fix it when pointed to the issue. He also indicated that the community can expect a draft attribution guideline for discussion in the upcoming months. However, there are many, many more contributions to the discussion that are worth reading.
  • OpenStreetMap has been accepted as a mentoring organisation for this year’s Google Summer of Code. On the OSM developers’ mailing list, Tobias Knerr calls for more project ideas to be added to the project ideas wiki page.
  • The Swiss Federal Railways SBB has set up (automatic translation) an internal group of volunteers called “OSM at SBB” to discuss OSM related things.
  • The blog of OpenCage data, the operator of OpenCage Geocoder, has published an interview with Richard Fairhurst, the maker of Deriviste (and a few other things).
  • Jochen Topf wrote a blog post about the changes for openstreetmapdata.com users after the move to a new server following FOSSGIS’ funding agreement for the new server infrastructure.

Imports

  • User Hokkosha published (automatic translation) a proposal for a data import (automatic translation) from Hokkaido Takushoku Bus and asked for feedback. This proposal will be produced in English after discussion in Japanese.

Events

  • The OSM group of Nancy and its surroundings meets (automatic translation) regularly in partnership with the “Fabrique Collective de la Culture du Libre”.

Humanitarian OSM

  • The World Bank Group has contracted the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team to digitise buildings in Tanzania from satellite imagery. By adding this data to OSM it is intended to help develop an off-grid energy sector, to complement the national grid, by allowing businesses to identify sites that could be served by mini-grids and solar home systems.
  • HOT published an article on the International Women’s Day 2019 with their highlights of gender diversity activity from the last 12 months.
  • sevendaysvt.com published an article about a humanitarian mapping event, co-hosted by the University of Vermont’s Humanitarian Mapping Club and Code for BTV, where attendees were introduced to OSM by mapping buildings in rural Africa.

Maps

switch2OSM

  • A German version of the NewsHereNow website/webapp is now available (English version). Simply click on the “Use my GPS location” button to find the physically nearest, non-chain (“local”) restaurants. If your favourite restaurant is missing, please make sure to add it to OpenStreetMap. For convenience, under the HERE/HIER tab is a button that takes you to OpenStreetMap centred at your nearest intersection.

Open Data

Software

  • The support for QGIS 2.18 LTR (Long Term Release) has ended. Users are asked to upgrade to QGIS 3.4 LTR.
  • Wille published a blog post that explains how to set up some tools to receive notifications from OSMCha via Telegram or e-mail. That way you will be notified whenever there are new changesets that match a filter you saved on OSMCha.
  • MapRoulette is now at version 3.2. The latest version of the micro-task platform for OSM features a new design, a new user dashboard, improved task completion flow, and much more. Martijn van Exel summarises the new features in his diary.
  • In his OSM diary Simon Poole celebrates the 10th anniversary of Vespucci and thanks all of the contributing developers. He also gives a preview of upcoming features such as multi-polygon support, turn-restrictions rendering, and a revamped style configuration.

Programming

  • Amon Santana, from HeiGIT, reports about a number of interesting new features in the latest version of the interactive OpenRouteService API Playground.

Releases

  • Version 3.3 of OsmAnd has been released. The team removed Facebook and Firebase analytics from the free version – the paid version OsmAnd+ already didn’t include them. The application now offers navigation for public transport, although still in a beta phase, recieved a redesigned directions menu and improved quick action menu, as well as the information about a route.

Did you know …

  • … Anita Graser’s “Free and Open Source GIS Ramblings“? It is a series of discussions about GIS data analysis.
  • … about Mappics? This is an open source map based travel photos gallery, with automatic place and weather descriptions of the very moment the photos were taken.
  • … that there are shops that sell goods with as little packaging as possible? Customers can bring their own reusable packaging to reduce waste. OSM recognises this using the tag bulk_purchase = yes
  • … the overview of all existing OSM Working Groups?

Other “geo” things

  • Gonzalo López published on NOSOLOSIG an article called “Geocoding of addresses: a pending subject”. (es) (automatic translation)
  • Sascha Fendrich, from HeiGIT, describes a study about semantic association rule learning using OSM data. He presents an example to explain the technique used and its potential for finding exceptions to general rules that can be used for data quality analysis.
  • Martijn van Exel explains how to use the new OpenStreetCam upload scripts.

OpenStreetMap protest against Art 13 of the EU Copyright Directive 1 | © OpenStreetMap

[Actual Category]

  • Michael Reichert suggests turning off OSM services or adding banners to protest against the EU plan to implement the new, controversial, Copyright Directive. However, the question remains as to why the protest against EU politics is more important than existing or proposed restrictions of freedom elsewhere.

About us

  • The transfer of weeklyOSM to the FOSSGIS server and the subsequent necessary maintenance work has been completed. Users might have noticed some minor interruptions in service last weekend whilst this was taking place. We would like to thank Peter Barth and Andreas Hubel for the transfer. We especially want to thank Anthony Bennett aka @internetgeog of www.internetgeography.net for many years of administration of the site, which he has maintained exemplarily since 2014.

Mapping

  • Jan S proposes better differentiation between various kinds of police facilities. Jan has drafted a proposal and is seeking comments.
  • Members of the Polytechnic University of Milan (Politecnico di Milano) created a deforestation mapping wiki page to improve the understanding and mapping of land coverage to make analysis and visualisation of environmental issues such as deforestation easier.
  • Paul Allen asks whether superroutes are good, bad or ugly. In his post on the tagging mailing list he mentions some pros and cons of the controversial construct. During the discussion it was also asked whether relations of type=route containing child relations should be preferred over superrelations.
  • Antoine Riche pointed to undiscussed wiki changes about cycleway tagging which resulted in a long discussion about how to deal with oneway restrictions.
  • German mappers are voting on the deprecation of relations of type associatedStreet in Germany.

Imports

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • The minutes of the OSMF Licence Working Group meeting of 14 February have been published.
  • The OSM Operations Team announced on Twitter that one of OSM’s tile caches received a Denial of Service attack by someone using Amazon servers and an Load Impact User-Agent.

Events

  • The FOSS4G North America, an open geospatial technology and business conference, will take place from 15 to 18 April 2019 in San Diego, USA. The program is available on the conference’s homepage.
  • The next mapathon of MAMAPA will take place on 28 March at the Abendakademie in Mannheim. Beyond the humanitarian objective of the Mapathon, MAMAPA promotes the integration of new immigrants in Germany, in which locals and migrants map in tandem. Through the joint work prejudices and stereotypical thinking are reduced and mutual trust is strengthened.
  • The 7th (seventh!) annual conference organised by OpenStreetMap France will take place from 14 to 16 June in Montpellier (34), on the campus of the Paul Valéry University. Proposals for presentations in 5′, 25′, 55′ or even 2-hour workshops will be accepted until 15 April.

Humanitarian OSM

  • Russell Deffner calls for help with mapping flooded areas in Mozambique and Zimbabwe exacerbated by Cyclone Idai. More information about current tasks and how you can help can be found on the corresponding wiki page.
  • Nina Strochlic covers in National Geographic how the Bidibidi refugee camp in North Uganda is transforming into a permanent city. She points out how humanitarian mapping, HOT in particular, has helped in documenting the transformation and provided valuable data for planning and managing the quickly evolving area.
  • A story on MapGive, an initiative of the U.S. Department of State’s Humanitarian Information Unit, details how updated aerial imagery has helped crowdsourced humanitarian mapping. MapGive helped mapping efforts of Missing Maps in Uganda and Bangladesh by providing support with current imagery. The blog post shows differences in aerial imagery over the years and a before and after comparison of OSM data around refugee camps in Northern Uganda.

Open Data

  • The regional conference and conference on Latin American Open Data Abrelatam19 will be held at Quito from 28 to 30 August 2019.

Software

  • TriMet in 2009 launched the open source trip planner “OpenTripPlanner” that combines public transport transit with walking and biking. The tool, which can use public transport data in General Transit Feed Specification “GTFS” format and is based on OSM data, gained some popularity within the OSM community. The company announced a new version of its tool that can also incorporate data from Uber, SHARE NOW (formerly car2go) and BIKETOWN and uses real-time locations of vehicles and bikes to calculate routes. A beta version with data for Portland, OR, USA is available.
  • The Android app OSMTracker, which is popular with OSM mappers, no longer shows maps as a background to tracks. OSMTracker uses the generic user-agent from the osmdroid library which was recently blocked by the OSM Operations Team. The tile usage policy requires application-specific user agents.
  • Fabian Kowatsch, of HeiGIT, announced that the HeiGIT Big Spatial Data team published a public world-wide instance of the ohsome OSM History Analysis Platform including an API, an updated dashboard and the beta prototype map interface ohsomeHEX (OSM History Explorer). All this allows you to analyse the evolution of any OSM tag for arbitrary regions and time periods in a simple way. Several examples are given in earlier blogs which now can be adapted for arbitrary regions around the world. Ideas for further enhancements are most welcome.

Releases

  • Version 5 of Openrouteservice was published. The service, developed by The Heidelberg Institute for Geoinformation Technology, bears the name of the Jupiter moon Io.

Did you know …

  • … the OSM Software Watchlist (release status) by Wambacher? It has been extended to cover another 15 OSM applications.
  • … the tagging of a centre turn lane? This is described using the tags lanes:both_ways= 1 and turn:both_ways = left.

Other “geo” things

  • Dr. Michele M Tobias asked #gischat on Twitter “Can you tell your GIS/mapping career story in one tweet?” Read the nice stories and please tell your OSM story as well. 😉
  • As Marius Watz has tweeted, the Norwegian municipality Trysil decided not to name streets but numbered thousands of cabin buildings instead. The website nrk.no reported that the step caused chaos for tourists, desperate cottage owners and emergency services.
  • Bryan Housel asks for help to “link branded businesses in OpenStreetMap to wikidata”.
  • The Guardian reports on desire lines: “illicit trails that defy the urban planners”. (Note: there is a small amount of data in OSM identifying such paths, see 1 and 2).
  • In an article on Medium, Caitlin Dewey covers the story of the Fruit Belt neighbourhood in Buffalo, New York which had been replaced on Google Maps by something called “Medical Park”. The article follows the residents and their investigation into how Google may have acquired inaccurate neighbourhood data from Pitney Bowes and how that came to be. She also points out how little control the community had over the mislabelling. In comparison, the neighbourhood had only been added to OSM a few days ago with plenty of room for map improvements in the area.
  • Jorge Andres, a volunteer cartographer for MapAction, discusses, on their corporate blog, how to most effectively represent topographical relief when mapping volcanic hazards. He suggests that 3D visualisations are more effective, and in 2D contour lines tend to obscure significant details.
  • Tom Lee, Mapbox’s lead on policy, testified before the US Senate Judiciary Committee regarding privacy law reform.

Mapping

  • mapmeld made an interesting analysis of language clusters by using Unicode code points. They also detected outliers and odd forms of vandalism.
  • The vote on the proposal “Fashion accessory shop” has begun and runs until 8th April 2019.
  • The vote on “Substations functions” ended. The proposal did not achieve the necessary majority.

Community

  • alexkemp describes how he resolves problems encountered with OSMTracker 0.7 when pictures aren’t georeferenced. He shows how he restores the missing data.
  • SK53 wanted to identify areas of social housing in England. He shows in his blog how he was able to create suitable useful polygons from an open data list of individual properties with PostGIS clustering. He suggests that such approaches may have broader applicability to OSM data.
  • Ilya Zverev recently started working for the taxi company Juno. He describes how GPX tracks from the Juno app are being aggregated and how they can be used to keep OpenStreetMap up-to-date with very fresh data. This data is a lot easier to work with than the GPX tracks stored by OSM, which may cover multiple changes in the road network. He also presented on this subject at FOSDEM in Brussels, and his talk was recorded.

Events

  • FOSS4G Argentina, a conference with workshops and presentations, takes place from 9th – 12th of April 2019 in Buenos Aires. Registration is open and it includes a workshop on how to use JOSM for editing by (@Hernan)
  • The Linuxwochen 2019 tour through Austria will be in Vienna from May 2 – 4. The article contains some links to video recordings of earlier Linux weeks. (de) (automatic translation)
  • Entur and Ruter are hosting an OpenTripPlanner Summit in Oslo on 3rd April. The proceedings will be live-streamed.

Humanitarian OSM

  • HOT has created a new development community for the Tasking Manager with further partnerships with Microsoft and Bing Maps. Over the next few months, work will begin on the design for integrating machine-learning and improving workflow performance of the Tasking Manager. Additionally open building datasets for Uganda and Tanzania will be created.
  • In order to be able to help people in crisis areas quickly, NGO helpers depend on high-quality maps. For many areas, these maps must first be produced. In doing so, Doctors Without Borders is supported by modern technology and by thousands of volunteers. On Tuesday 2nd of April 2019 from 19:00 – 22:00 interested people will meet for a Missing Maps Mapathon in Berlin.

Maps

  • PrivateMajory tweets a 3-D effect map made using QGIS and then enhanced in Blender.
  • DJI appears to be using (in certain countries) OSM data in their Fly Safe GEO ZONE Map
(several examples). A tweet and emails have been sent to DJI requesting correct attribution, but sadly there was no reply from DJI.
  • The OpenStreetMap.be website now has a brand-new “How To” page with some tutorials and example code to demonstrate on how to use OSM and OSMBE base layer.
  • The first version of the Baby Map was published. It represents the tags that are relevant for parents of small children. However, the data in OSM is still a bit thin.

Programming

  • The German forum discusses (automatic translation) the categorisation of notes on osm.org. The forest of “Notes” markers is often dense and a categorisation by urgency or keywords could have a positive effect on the processing of the messages. User miche101 arranges notes on a map assigning different symbols to the markers based on keywords.
  • The GISience News Blog of the University of Heidelberg previews a new way to query spatial links in the OpenStreetMap history database OSHDB.

Did you know …

  • … the 2 Minute introduction videos to help beginners get started with OpenStreetMap and mapping for HOT-projects? Vitor George reminds us of the possibility to add subtitles to these YouTube videos.
  • … how to tag an area that is covered by trees, but neither tagged as landuse=forest nor natural=wood such as for example a cemetery? These can be tagged using landcover = trees along with their default landuse tags.
  • … the smartphone app ViewRanger ?

OSM in the media

  • The Free Software Foundation (FSF) recognised OpenStreetMap with the 2018 Free Software Award for Projects of Social Benefit and Deborah Nicholson with the Award for the Advancement of Free Software. Kate Chapman received the award from Richard M. Stallman at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and gave a speech on behalf of OSM/OSMF community.
  • The Open Mapping Group at McGill University in Montreal, Canada, hosted an indoor mapping party in the face of frosty weather.

Other “geo” things

  • The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) published a report on reliefweb.int about the use of disruptive technologies in disaster management. The digital technologies that are supported by many volunteers around the world in the crowdsourcing projects such as OSM are highlighted in particular.
  • Nazi spies, untroubled by the Soviet authorities, made a complete map of Moscow during the late 1930s.
  • Yahoo Japan news reported that Google Maps data of Japan has deteriorated. Users assume that the data source has switched, because the copyright attribution of Zenrin has disappeared.
  • Grab Malaysia and The Department of Geoinformation, of the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, organise mentoring training for mappers valled Grab Geo*Star in order increase the interest of students in the areas of mapping and OpenStreetMap.
  • Mapbox reports that it enhanced its living map platform with proprietary data from Zenrin, a Japanese map publisher. It is not clear as to whether enhanced was used synonymously for “replaced OSM”.
  • It’s not just OSM that suffers from the occasional broken polygon. Simon Poole spotted woods near Zurich which have disappeared on Here and Bing maps.
  • The book Time for mapping: Cartographic temporalities deals with the entry of the temporal into maps in the digital age and contemporary mapping practices.
  • The children’s book Lindsey, the GIS Specialist introduces the basics of GIS. This is one of a small series published by the US-based surveying firm Bolton & Menk, based on the job roles of their own employees.
  • A Guardian quiz shows population density maps of various cities. Can you identify them? Or do you have to guess?.
  • Esri announces on their ArcGIS blog that the new March version (previously beta) of the OpenStreetMap Vector Basemap is now freely available in ArcGIS.
  • On the south coast of Norway the first underwater restaurant in Europe opened (automatic translation). Potential visitors have to wait half a year to get a reservation due to it being booked out. It is still only mapped as a construction site in OSM.

Mapping

  • User yumean1119 announced that voting has started for the improved proposal (automatic translation) on the use of highway=cycleway in Japan. The vote ends 14 April.
  • Silent Spike proposed leisure=inflatable_park for playgrounds with inflatable equipment and asks for comments on his proposal.
  • If you’ve ever wanted to add a tag to show that a railway track is not used regularly for scheduled services, including trams and subways, you might be interested in SelfishSeahorse’s proposal. The Request for Comments period has just started and feedback is much appreciated.
  • Warin proposes a new way to mark areas of steps such as the Spanish Steps in Rome. His proposal is now up for discussion.
  • The vote on the proposal that was drafted for better differentiation of various kinds of police facilities has been postponed to allow more discussion on the topic.

Community

  • A number of people have expressed concern about the way the development of iD is organised and specifically how iD is influencing tagging in OSM. This time Frederik Ramm, board member of both OSMF and the German chapter of OSM, raised (de) his concerns and asked for feedback. (automatic translation)
  • An issue on GitHub about tagging track type in the iD editor became contentious. @matkoniecz suggested that iD deliberately pushes “probably not safe for most cars” as a definition for highway=track, and Bryan Housel, iD maintainer, responded “I basically just disregard everything on the tagging mailing list and the OSM wiki”. This was used as an example in the discussion referred to in the previous item…
  • The application period for this year’s Google Summer of Code is now open and, as in previous years, OSM has been been accepted as a mentoring organisation. You, as a student, have the chance of getting paid while working on open source software projects such as OSM.
  • Former OSMF board member Ilya Zverev pens a critique (automatic translation) of OSM’s “do-ocracy”.
  • OpenStreetMap Belgium published an article titled Heritage in Flanders and Crowd-Sourced Projects. They explain how to add information about heritage sites in OSM and Wikimedia projects such as Wikipedia, Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons. The article doesn’t just focus on gathering and adding information but also on how to get and use information on historical places.

OpenStreetMap Foundation

Events

  • The Albanian Open Source Conference OSCAL 2019, which will take place on 18 and 19 May 2019 in Tirana, Albania, is looking for speakers.
  • For mappers who like to plan well in advance: The FOSSGIS 2020, a geospatial conference in Germany that covers many open source, open data and OSM topics, will be held on 11 to 14 March 2020 in Freiburg in Breisgau, Germany. The article also features (de) highlights of the recent conference. (automatic translation)

Humanitarian OSM

  • Following requests received by HOT from several humanitarian partners they are providing support to assist on the ground teams already providing humanitarian aid in Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe after Cyclone Idai. HOT is specifically looking for people with experience as Data specialist or Partner liaison. Apparently, HOT also allows applications from people requiring reimbursement for their activity.
  • After Cyclone Idai hit Mozambique and Zimbabwe, HOT is looking for help to support the local emergency response such as Doctors Without Borders. The article lays out different ways you can support the efforts.
  • The openrouteservice instance for disaster management, operated by the Heidelberg Institute for Geoinformation Technology, is supporting HOT’s activation following Cyclone Idai by updating the data for routing almost hourly.

Maps

  • The MapOSMaptic instance at osm-baustelle.de has implemented a hillshading overlay.
  • Andrew Harvey announced the re-launch of a modernised version of BeyondTracks. BeyondTracks started life in 2012 with the aim of helping people find enjoyable walks around Sydney, Australia. The scope of the site has expanded to cover all of Australia and people who would like to suggest a walk are encouraged to contact BeyondTracks.

switch2OSM

  • A Spanish version of the NewsHereNow website/webapp is now available.Simply click on the “Use my GPS location” button to find the physically nearest, non-chain (“local”) restaurants. If your favourite restaurant is missing, please make sure it (including its website URL) is on OpenStreetMap. There is also a direct link to OpenStreetMap centred at your nearest intersection.

Open Data

  • EldoHub and OpenStreetMap Kenya received funding from Mapbox and the UK government to take part in the 2019 Open Data Day, on 2 March 2019. The Open Knowledge Foundation blogged about the events in Kenya. These took place in EldoHub, a technology innovation hub in Uasin Gishu County; and in Nairobi, where an open mapping track was held to discuss topics such as open spatial data and crowdsourced mapping.
  • ČÚZK, the Czech national survey agency, just published some of their data for commercial and non-commercial use as open data. We are getting another great source for OpenStreetMap in the Czech Republic.
  • The map at electricitymap.org visualises CO₂ emissions and other details about countries’ mix of the production and consumption of energy. The map is currently in German only. However, the project is open source and the developers are asking for help with translation.

Software

  • Nick Whitelegg announced the release of Hikar 0.2.0, an augmented reality app for walkers and hikers. The app is available for Android and the code is open source. The app, which helps the user with footpaths and signposts on the camera feed, now covers the whole of Europe.
  • User clementroux writes (fr) (automatic translation) in his blog about his app Next2Me, which finds and displays facilities with the key amenity=* in an adjustable radius around the current location – of course based on OSM.

Releases

  • JOSM has been updated to version 14945. The validator received various improvements and the Add Tag dialog shows now last used tags not only last added tags.
  • Version 0.12 of the GraphHopper Routing Engine has been released. Turn restrictions and turn costs are now supported in the speed mode, the Isochrone module was made compatible with public transit and the average speed calculation was improved.
  • User Wambacher is constantly updating his OSM Software Watchlist, which includes almost all OSM-related software along with the date of their latest release. Most recently Basecamp, Mapillary, Vespucci and many others received an update. Wambacher is highlighting one new addition: OSHDB, a high-performance data analysis platform for OSM’s full-history data.

Did you know …

  • … how to tag a bus bay where buses can stop without blocking traffic? The tag bus_bay can be added to the node of the stopping position of the bus – or it can be added to the road, representing the full length of the bay. JOSM’s PT_Assistant plugin provides support for adding them conveniently on ways with its double split map mode.
  • [1] … the “Magic Roundabout“? On OSM it looks like this.

OSM in the media

  • Le Monde describes (automatic translation) how local mappers in various African cities are using the JungleBus app to map local bus routes.
  • eepublishers in South Africa understand more about the threat to OpenStreetMap posed by the EU Copyright Directive than members of the European Parliament. Or should the EU MPs be interest-driven?

Other “geo” things

  • The deployment of “Strava Scramblers” to reduce conflicts at popular spots made local riders angry.(This April fool’s day article caught many readers off guard).
  • The AGILE conference in Limassol, Cyprus (17 to 20 June 2019), which is about Geospatial Technologies for Local and Regional Development, will organise a workshop called “GEOgraphical and CULTural aspects of Geo-information: Issues and Solutions” and invites you to submit a short OSM paper.

Mapping

  • In a series of tweets, Tyler Busby updates progress on using machine learning to identify rooftop solar panels in Austin, Texas. The data are used to maintain a MapRoulette challenge for adding the data to OSM.
  • Nuno Caldeira announced with a tweet the work done by OSM’s Portuguese Telegram working group. More than 4,000 buildings on the islands of Flores and Corvo, in the western group of the Azores archipelago, were mapped in 35 days.
  • Brian Prangle suggests improving the POI data quality in the United Kingdom as the project for the second quarter. First priority should be businesses that no longer exist or have changed their name. The project follows a successful first quarter where nearly 70,000 addresses were improved or confirmed with use of public Food Hygiene Rating Standard data.
  • Dan S proposes a UK-specific project to map solar electricity panels. He points to wiki pages for rooftop solar panels and large solar farms that have data that should help in completing the task.
  • JM82 is surprised (de) (automatic translation) that the coverage of mapped buildings in Austria seems to be decreasing.
  • Kleper from Colombia invites all active mappers to help complete the following task: 121. It is suggested to start with the area of Chocó, which is affected by constant migration of people from different regions and recently had to deal with a further increase of migration due to the crisis in Venezuela.
  • The intensive mapping of garage access roads in residential areas by employees of newspaper publishers is intensively discussed (de) (automatic translation) in the German forum. User boldtrn has found, in a sample, an error rate of 30 to 50 percent in the posts in his street.
  • LorenzoStucchi has drafted three proposals for the tag landcover. He suggests landcover=cultivated for areas which are cultivated by humans such as farmland or meadows, landcover=artificial for areas that are altered by construction, mining or other human activities and landcover=barren for areas without vegetation and with bare soil. The request for comments period started on 6 April 2019.
  • CapitaineMoustache has drafted a proposal for industrial=grain_storage_centre as a specification of landuse=industrial. The request for comments period is planned to start on 5 April 2019.
  • The British national mapping agency, the Ordnance Survey, tweeted a photo of surveying work starting on Tottenham Hotspur’s new stadium which opened this month. Steve Chilton points out that OSM has had it mapped in detail for a while now.

Community

  • Colin Blackburn is intrigued by a “Clothing Optional” labelled beach in OSM on a route that he has vaguely planned to run. We hope he is not helping Mapillary during his runs.
  • In his diary, hvalentim wrote (automatic translation) some reflections on the mapping of national registered Portuguese-built heritage sites in OSM: some gaps were detected and many other suggestions made for the improvement and standardisation of tagging.

Imports

  • Jason Owen drafted a plan to import water well positions in Harare, Zimbabwe and announced it on the import mailing list.

Events

  • The Call for Proposals for the HOT Summit 2019, that will take place on 19-20 September 2019 directly before the State of the Map 2019 in Heidelberg, is now open.
  • Registration for SotM France, which will take place in Montpellier from 14 to 16 June 2019, is open! (fr) (automatic translation)

Humanitarian OSM

  • HOT brings transparency to staff salaries. While it does not publish individual salaries, it has made the formula/method open. The article, on HOT’s website, explains why they wanted to be more open about the salaries, the different forms of transparency and the difficulties they faced during the process to find a new model to increase equality. The article also details how the new model eliminates inequalities and the effect it had on the payroll after the implementation.
  • This year’s nomination phase for new members at HOT US Inc. has started and lasts until 16 April 2019. As Natalie Sidibe wrote on the mailing list, HOT is allowing self-nominations this year in order to increase the diversity of membership.
  • Gaurav Thapa, from Kathmandu Living Labs, describes the collection process for gathering geospatial data on the ground in Kathmandu Valley, Nepal as part of a project to increase the understanding of exposure to natural hazards and to help minimise risks resulting from these threats.
  • Jorieke Vyncke gave a huge Thank You from Doctors Without Borders to HOT for the work and support HOT has provided after Cyclone Idai.

Education

  • A collection of 200+ videos in English (and another 200 in German) about OpenStreetMap, FOSS4G, OSGeo, GIS, etc. is available on TIB AV-Portal.
  • Mapbox’s article “Your first steps with JOSM” helps you contribute to OpenStreetMap.

Maps

  • Russ Garrett made some enhancements to OpenInfraMap: different aspects of infrastructure are now shown as layers, and a heat map layer of solar photovoltaic generators has been added.

Programming

  • Heidelberg University’s GIScience Research Group released a preview of a new Openrouteservice client for the web and mobile devices.

Releases

Did you know …

  • … the tool comparemaps.drona.ro which allows you to compare OSM with Google Maps, Bing Maps and Nokia Maps?
  • …the App KartaGPS?
  • NotesReview, which you can use to search for OSM notes using search terms?
  • …the webpage Pic4Review? It allows mapping, using Mapillary images, and participating in various missions, such as adding accessibility for wheelchairs, adding ecopoints, or integrating missions over public toilets. You can also add your own quests!
  • … the concept of an “advanced stopping line” for cyclists? These allow bicycles to wait at traffic lights in front of other traffic. In OSM these can be tagged as cycleway=asl.

Other “geo” things

  • Even vultures can recognise the international border between Spain and Portugal. (Or rather, the difference in legislation between both countries regarding abandonment of cattle carcasses.)
  • Many economists claim that larger cities are more productive than smaller cities, usually known as the agglomeration effect. Tom Forth, of ODI Leeds, writes in CityMetrics that this does not apply to Birmingham because of poor public transport.
  • In a tweet, Simon Küstenmacher refers to a publication by the World Economic Forum. The publication explains five “maps that reveal the world’s remaining wildernesses.”
  • Mike Blackmore posted an animation on Twitter showing how almost all rivers in Europe have “developed” or straightened over the past centuries.William du Plooy posted a similar shocking comparison: The deforestation in Mozambique.

Mapping

  • Joseph Eisenberg restarted the proposal process for camp_site=camp_pitch.The tag has already been used over 6800 times to add individual tent or caravan spots within a tourism=camp_site area.
  • Joseph Eisenberg also proposed golf=cartpath for golf cart paths, rather than highway=path or highway=service with golf_cart=designated.
  • The tag shop=fashion_accessories, which was suggested by SelfishSeahorse for shops focusing on selling fashion accessories, was approved.
  • The tag place=locality is currently used about 1.3 million times. The tag is used for a lot of different purposes such as ghost towns and railway junctions in the USA or in combination with locality=townland and locality=subtownland in Ireland. This led Joseph Eisenberg to ask whether locality=* could be used to specify the type of locality.
  • Since 15 March, about seven-eighths of all associatedStreet relations in Germany have been replaced by tags on the buildings. The proportion of redundant relations has been reduced from 58% to 7%. dktue posted a simple evaluation (automatic translation) on the forum.

Community

  • Tigerfell invited all contributors to vote about the proposed Deletion policy for wiki pages and files.
  • Alan McConchie wrote a blog post with his thoughts about the unusual election for the OpenStreetMap US Board. Four candidates — Jonah Adkins, Ian Dees, Bryan Housel and Alyssa Wright — were approved by a simple confirmatory vote and Minh Nguyễn was elected by a ranked choice voting for the seat vacated by Maggie Cawley. In his post, he explains the details of those voting procedures. Maggie Cawley resigned six weeks after being re-elected to take on the role of executive director of OSM US.
  • The Conversation, a website for news from the academic and research community, published an article entitled Better city bike maps are made by volunteers, largely based on investigations of data from Canadian cities. It concluded that OSM is more up-to-date and includes more local details than many other sources, including data from the Open Data portals of the cities studied.
  • Martijn van Exel introduces a simple approach on how to measure the “well mapped-ness” (or just “mappedness”) of a town in OSM. In his step-by-step guide he explains how he used the name= tag as a proxy for POIs, which he then uses to define completeness, and to visualise the “mappedness”.

Imports

  • The Swedish community plans to import landuse data from the Swedish Environmental Agency (Naturvårdsverket). A discussion about this is on the mailing list talk-se. (automatic translation)
  • Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) recently published (ja) (automatic translation) farmland data for the whole of Japan. nyampire provides some details about this huge dataset with 30,951,173 polygons. He concluded that an import “..could be challenging”.

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • The minutes of the 14 March meeting of the License Working Group of the OSMF have been published.

Events

  • Christine Karch, chair of SotM Working Group, points out, once more, an important deadline via a tweet. The deadline for the “Call for Presentations” for this years’ conference in Heidelberg is next Thursday, 25 April 2019. Here is the link to register your presentation.
  • Neil Matthews will be presenting an Intro to OpenStreetMap at the Open Data Bristol meetup on 23 April 2019.

Humanitarian OSM

  • The University of Capetown featured an article about its efforts to support the disaster relief operations after Cyclone Idai in Mozambique together with its partners Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team and Missing Maps.
  • Also mapping after Cyclone Idal, as reported by the website physicsworld.com, were members of the European Geoscience Union (EGU). Their efforts were to aid relief operations in Zimbabwe.
  • HOT has selected eight community projects out of applications from over 30 countries as recipients of the 2019 HOT Microgrants. The article gives short introductions to the projects in Asia, South America and Africa.
  • The La Vanguardia newspaper from Madrid reports (automatic translation) about a mapathon in which more than 500 people participated. The Mapathon was organised by Doctors Without Borders, the Geographical Faculty of the University of Zaragoza and Missing Maps.

Education

  • The newspaper Volksfreund Trier reports (de) (automatic translation) about the Erasmus+ project of the Geschwister-Scholl-Schule, a vocational school in Saarburg, Germany. The students will be introduced to OSM, as in two previous projects (1), (2), this time with a focus on mapping for humanitarian purposes.

Maps

  • [1] miche101 has introduced Notes Map, a tool which tries to categorise notes reported on OSM’s website based on their content. According to his forum post (de) (automatic translation), he is using 774 pre-defined words to sort the notes into 25 categories.
  • Qwant Maps now has route calculation (automatic translation).
  • The MapOSMatic fork maintained by Hartmut Holzgraefe now uses a Weblate instance for localisation instead of Transifex.

Open Data

  • FOSS4G has organised a competition for new open source applications using the large amount of data gathered by earth observation satellites. The competition will be open until the FOSS4G conference on 26 August 2019.

Licences

  • Frederik Ramm asks on the Legal-Talk mailing list about the extent to which Share-Alike should be applied to the evaluation rules and results of machine learning.

Software

  • The OpenStreetMap History Database (OSHDB) has received an update. Please check the bugfixes and new features on GitHub.

Programming

  • Users of systems using Osmosis to obtain the minutely diffs should check whether their system continued functioning properly after 11 April. On that day, a diff was published that Osmosis could not handle. See the mailing list Talk for more information.
  • The OSM API does not yet have a reasonable concept of how to deal with diff uploads that have been sent to the API and no answer received e.g. due to network problems. Most clients try to upload the diff again and therefore often create new objects twice. User mmd has started a discussion on GitHub.
  • In the iD bug tracker, there is a discussion about supporting the lifecycle tagging scheme. The main developer quincylvania has already implemented this in the Git branch lifecycle-tagging.
  • Muramoto announced that a new version of OpenSwitchMap has been released and now works with not only Chrome but also Firefox. This app is a browser extension to open the position displayed in Google Maps with another map provider or OSM QA tool. F4map developer jazzzz has made a great contribution to developing the new version and supporting Firefox. The name of the project could be difficult in light of OSM’s trademarks.

Releases

Did you know …

  • … how to tag the name of a bridge, which is usually different from the name of the road passing over it? The matching tag is bridge:name, while the road stays with the usual name tag. You can also add foreign names using the language suffix scheme like bridge:name:ja. The same concept exists for tunnels as well: tunnel:name.
  • laengengrad-breitengrad.de (automatic translation) for fast conversion of geocoordinates?

Other “geo” things

  • Nick Weir wrote an article on towardsdatascience.com about automated analysis of imagery and mapping, for instance in monitoring de-forestation or disaster response. The article discusses the typical difficulties faced by automated solutions: imagery displacement and distortion, lighting, object occlusion, and resolution. In this context he discusses the top five winning algorithms of the SpaceNet Off-Nadir Building Footprint Extraction Challenge.
  • The Swiss newspaper Tagesanzeiger has published a quiz on Swiss cities with graphics by “Figuregrounder” by Hans Hack.
  • Facebook’s AI team created a population density map of the whole of Africa.
  • Android Authority reported that Uber paid $58 million for using Google Maps between 2016 and 2018. The source is the prospectus for the upcoming IPO.
  • New scenery editor for X-Plane with OpenStreetMap as overlay has been released. (de) (automatic translation)

Mapping

  • Andy Mabbett looked at some high-use wikidata tags and (while also noticing some accidental mistagging) raised the question whether each branch of a company should be tagged with the wikidata= code of the parent or if -with the exception of the headquarters- brand:wikidata= or franchise:wikidata are better options to tag the belonging.
  • Dave F wanted to know whether junction=yes on polygons is used somewhere. According to the answers from Mateusz and Tobias, it is used.
  • Valor Naram created a proposal for tagging baby changing tables and asks for comments.
  • The tagging proposal Police Facilities, which was supposed to introduce additional detail tags for police facilities, has missed the approval threshold slightly.
  • Leif Rasmussen has drafted a proposal for improving road lane connectivity information as he thinks that the current model with turn:lanes= does fails to store all information for complex junctions. Simon Poole points to a similar proposal for a transit=-key from 2015 that has been abandoned.
  • Joseph Eisenberg wants to map plateaus, mesas, buttes and tablelands and asks on the Tagging mailing list for a suitable tag value for it. Various options are suggested; others believe that some large imprecisely defined areas that are difficult to verify on the spot do not really fit OSM’s data model at all, but should be stored elsewhere and made accessible to map stylists.

Community

  • Ilya Zverev announces the opening of nominations for the OpenStreetMap Awards 2019.
  • OpenStreetMap is turning 15 this year and at the time of writing only one event has been scheduled so far. Thank you, Michael, for the reminder.
  • The OSM Portugal Community has debated, through the mailing list Talk-pt, about the mapping of a new hospital on Madeira Island. If this hospital is under construction, how should it be mapped? If it is ready and closed, how should it be mapped? If it is ready, working without a license (and therefore illegal) how should it be mapped? Who should check the possible (i)legality of the operation? What should the mapper do? Map when to open without a license? Ignore until everything is licensed? These are some of the questions that have been asked by the Portuguese community. (pt) (automatic translation)
  • Michael Reichert suggests (de) (translation) an OSM-Wikicamp to discuss all the OSM-wiki related issues – and there are a lot of them. As he writes in his post, chances are that OSM’s local chapter in German, FOSSGIS e.V., funds the accommodation.
  • The cleanup of our wiki gained some popularity recently. Apparently even pages which were deleted 7 years ago as been outdated still find readers today. Ilya Zverev criticised the deletion of a wikipage about the testing of the API 0.6. Unfortunately (but highly predictably) the following discussion about the wiki deletion policy derailed to a semantic dispute about the recent progress of the OSM API, the use of the word “vandalism” and the existence or non-existence of gatekeepers in OSM.
  • API 0.6 turned 10 years last week: it went live on 21st of April 2009. Ilya Zverev recalls the history (ru) (automatic translation) of switching from API 0.5 and explains why he thinks we will never see a version 0.7 of the API.

Imports

  • Grigory Rechistov prepared an import of forests, farmland and other types of land cover from Sweden’s Environmental Protection Agency and documented his plan in the wiki. Criticism voiced on the Imports mailing list seems to have been largely ignored.

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • Christoph Hormann has discovered that the board meeting on April 24 contains a non-public agenda item about GlobalLogic.
  • Rory McCann asks whether GlobalLogic indirectly pleads guilty because they offered to withdraw the memberships of their employees.

Events

  • Potential organisers can now apply for the State of the Map 2020. Applications close on June 15 2019.
  • Christine Karch and Denis Helfer plan (de) another OSM meeting in Strasbourg in May. The meeting, which will be scheduled every six months from now on will be held in German-French-English-Alsatian.

Maps

  • Philip Pierdomenico introduced his recently created OpenStreetMap Coffee Map on Twitter.
  • As Mapillary reports in its blog, the Departments of Transportation of the US states Utah, Florida, Arizona, Connecticut and Vermont have uploaded images covering 430,000 km of roads to Mapillary where they were automatically processed to detect traffic signs and other features.
  • The Neue Züricher Zeitung reports (de) (translation) about the origin and development of Wheelmap by the association Sozialhelden and introduces its founder Raúl Krauthausen.

Open Data

Programming

  • yaugenka filed a feature request for iD in 2017 to “unglue” an entire landuse area from a line with a shortcut. Quincy Morgan implemented this function recently and provided a short animation how it works.
  • The PgAdmin4 Geometry viewer nice feature is added to PgAdmin4 since v3.3 with an OpenStreetMap background. While testing PostGIS scripts, programmers simply switch between Data And Geometry viewers and avoid moving data to other tools to visualize.
  • jguthrie100 created a pull request for the iD editor which warns if an address is used multiple times.

Releases

  • MapRoulette is now at version 3.3. The latest release adds a brand new review system. You can mark each task you solve as ‘review wanted’. Mappers can volunteer to review other mappers’ solved tasks within MapRoulette. Other new features include a new Portuguese localization and opt-in email notifications.

Did you know …

OSM in the media

  • On El Pais’ article about the 2016 Spanish General Election showing voting maps. 11 of the 12 maps displayed on the article do not have the required attribution. The 2019 election was on 28th April.

Other “geo” things

  • The Guardian reports about the fight of a man from Ilford, a London borough in North East London, for the postal code E19 which would indicates the belonging to London. He is concerned that than the current IG1 – IG6 is not always recognised as a London postcode and could be misread as part of Essex. His “fight” has lasted for 15 years now.
  • Mapbox announced the release of its Vision SDK during the Shanghai Automotive Show. The SDK allows developers to add functions like augmented reality navigation and lane guidance, live traffic alerts and many others into own driving applications. The SDK also combines processed live data from sensors and cameras with classic map data, called AI Maps.
  • Kenneth Field and Max Roberts show that schematic maps are a subject about which highly emotional debates can be carried out in public.
  • A Blog Post from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation reports how collection of data at the local level with gps helps monitor Malaria desease with spatial analysis of the data.
  • The National Geographic reports that the ice melt in the Himalaya will threaten more people to suffer from flash floods than thought. Researchers have included OpenStreetMap data in their investigations.
  • Nico Belmonte, formerly head of visualization at Uber, has joined Mapbox as General Manager in charge of maps.
  • You are invited to submit workshop- and presentation proposals for the URISA 2019 Caribbean GIS Conference, which takes place 18-21 November 18-21 in Port of Spain, Trinidad.

Mapping

  • Winner of the 2018 Greatness in Mapping Award, Tshedy (Mats’eliso Thobei), organised a 24 hr mapathon of Lesotho on Friday 26th April, to bring the map of the next level. On Twitter she thanks all participants for the support and for the encouraging messages.
  • Colin Blackburn reports on his long planned investigation of a “Clothing Optional” area mapped in the Netherlands, and finds no on-the-ground evidence for this name tag.
  • The voting for landcover=barren, a tag for areas without vegetation and with bare soil, started but the voting is not going well at time of writing this. Peter Elderson has probably given the reason in a comment to his vote: “… your thinking does not match the mainstream OSM mapper’s view”
  • Voting started for the key golf_cart=*, intended to express access restrictions imposed for golf carts and similar small, low-speed electric vehicles.
  • The distinction between waterway=river and waterway=canal is not as easy as one might think. A discussion about the differences was started by Dave F, who felt that other mappers incorrectly tag the canalised sections at lock gates along rivers as waterway=canal.
  • Joseph Eisenberg has added a section about non-verifiable geometries such as natural=bay, natural=strait, and place=*. However, not all agree with the changes he made as the post from Tobias Knerr indicates.
  • Instead of starting the proposal process, Joseph Eisenberg skipped this step and created a wiki page for natural=mountain_range as the tag is already used over 600 times by over 80 different mappers.
  • Joseph Eisenberg created two new proposal pages, one for natural=mesa and one for natural=butte. A mesa is a geological formation also known as table or tableland, potrero or tepui. A butte is and quite similar but smaller than mesas.
  • Jan S brought a stripped-down version of the recently declined proposal for police facilities forward for voting. The new proposal consists only of the police=* tag.
  • fanfouer created a proposal to allow a better specification of traction substations, i.e. substation=traction and asks for comments.
  • Anna and Karen from the Geographical Institute of the University of Heidelberg will improve (de) the mapping of Heidelberg, in particular data on accessibility, entrances to buildings and general infrastructure, to enable visitors of the State of the Map in September 2019 to find their way through the nice town and navigate in the best possible way on the basis of OSM data. It would not be Germany if the very first response after the intention was announced, would not point you to the rules. A wikipage was created (de) to coordinate the mapping efforts.

Community

  • Fanevanjanahary and SeverinGeo shared a tweet and a Twitter moment about #ActionOSMMG2019: two weeks of training in OSM and open geomatics at Antananarivo (Madagascar) for local students and professionals from both the private and public sectors.
The courses were facilitated with the help of members of Chadian community and a Togolese mapper thanks to support from the International Organisation of La Francophonie (OIF). During the workshop, a several days long mapathon has been organized around lake Itasy at the request of the decentralized cooperation Région Itasy/Nouvelle Aquitaine. This activity is documented on the wiki OSM, following the OSM Foundation’s organised editing guidelines.
  • The coastline/icesheet extracts, formerly hosted at openstreetmapdata.com, have been migrated to osmdata.openstreetmap.de. In a blogpost Jochen Topf provides some background information about the move.
  • The meaning of park in leisure=park and boundary=national_park, and, also, the distinction between different kinds of parks lead to an extensive discussion on the Talk-us mailing list.
  • Jinal Foflia from Grab recently shared a post about Grab’s team in Thailand who has been uploading Mapillary imagery for areas around Chiang Mai. It is already ~82% complete; covering 1,667 km of roads. They are aiming for the upload to be completed by end of this month!
  • For the Opencities Africa project, initiated by the World Bank, Potentiel 3.0 and the local OSM community (OSM-RDCOSM-RDC) collaborated with OSFAC (video fr) using innovative solutions to help make local communities in Kinshasa more resilient to erosion and flooding. The work ongoing since June 2018, used a whole host of techniques: participative mapping; drones; training in data collection with local administrators and citizens using phones and tablets; focus groups to analyze maps and identify challenges to meet; and quality analysis tools to evaluate mapping.
  • The deletion of wiki pages remains unregulated. The proposal for a deletion policy for the OSM wiki failed. The main point against were the bureaucratic hurdles that would have been implemented by this policy although some, who rejected the proposal, accepted the need for some form of rules. As time passes and the number of outdated pages increases the question might re-appear. In our last issue we reported about a prominent complaint about a deleted wiki page.
  • flowolf and his colleague started to create a free business directory based on OSM (yellowosm). This has been presented in a talk at the Grazer Linuxtage 2019. Currently the map shows only businesses in Austria.

Events

  • Adam Steer shares the proposed program for FOSS4G SotM Oceania, which will take place on 12-15 November 2019 in Wellington, NZ, and asks for comments before end of May, when the calls for papers and workshops need to be started.
  • The call for talks and workshops for the FOSS4G UK, the conference about free and open source geospatial software, is now open. The conference will be held in Edinburgh on the 19 – 20 September 2019, with an Ice Breaker the day before and a Code Sprint the day after.

Humanitarian OSM

  • In a blog post on HOT’s website Lauren Bateman from the American Red Cross explains how the data and maps provided by HOT and OpenStreetMap helped the aid response after Cyclone Idai.
  • The University of Luxembourg and Médecins Sans Frontières will host a mapathon on 23rd May 2019 to help MSF’s humanitarian response efforts.
  • The minutes for HOT’s board meeting on 18th April 2019 are now available.
  • The MapSwipe Community and the Heidelberg Institute of Geoinformation Technology started working on a MapSwipe extension that will allow users to find changes by comparing two satellite images to help humanitarian mapping efforts.
  • Heidelberg University’s GIScience Research Group will hold a session titled Usage and Analyses of OpenStreetMap for Development at the 11th Information Communications Technology for Development (ICT4D) Conference, which takes place at 30 April until 03 May 2019 in Kampala, Uganda.

Maps

  • Along with his collaborators, Jochen Görtler received the Best Paper award at the Pacific Visualisation conference for his work on “Stippling of 2D Scalar Fields” (mainly meaning maps).
  • [1] Stefan Keller from the University of Applied Sciences Rapperswil published a “Castle Dossier Map of Switzerland”. This is currently the most complete web map of castles and palaces in Switzerland, including nearby foreign countries (Germany, France, Italy) – right up to Neuschwanstein Castle. The multilingual web application mashes OpenStreetMap with Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons (images) and Wikipedia. The project’s source code is available at GitLab.
  • The historic.place extended its content and also shows the new map of castles in Switzerland based on Wikimedia’s castle data (de).
  • The official London Marathon App surprisingly used the OpenStreetMap tile servers which failed to cope with the load (probably because of improper configuration of their CDN). See also the Tile Usage Policy and switch2osm.org for tutorials to set up your own infrastructure.

Open Data

Licences

  • Oracle is changing its license model for the Java platform. How this affects the usage of JOSM is discussed in the German forum (automatic translation).

Software

  • Development Seed created osm-coverage-tiles, which visualises infrastructure information, specifically, buildings and roads from OSM in order to improve the validation of machine learning results. Pilar Gabriela Serrano Quispe explains some more information in an article on medium.com.

Programming

Releases

  • The JOSM team has released a new stable version. Version 15031 fixes a bug where a changeset comment was uploaded despite an empty changeset comment field with the last one used. The functionality of the download_along plugin has been added to JOSM and is now available under “More Tools”. As always, there are many other improvements, bugfixes and new features linked in the changelog.

Did you know …

  • … the tags for timetables at stops of public transport services? The traditional timetable posted at the stop can be tagged as departures_board, while the newer electronic kind with up-to-date information is tagged passenger_information_display.
  • …that you can quickly add turn restriction relations with Vespucci or iD editors?

OSM in the media

  • The Saarbrücker Zeitung reports (de) about Carsten Grammes, board member of a private association, which cares about the mining history of the Saarland. With excursions through old tunnels and the work on the history map Historic.Place in OpenStreetMap, he has combined both hobbies and now runs guided tours (fr)/(de) of the Velsen adventure mine.
  • This blog post from apnews.com shares how they combined and analyzed data from the U.S. Census Bureau, Cal Fire and OpenStreetMap to evaluate exit routes for Californians living in areas at risk of a fire-related evacuation.

Other “geo” things

  • Daniel Huffman reminisces about LineDrive linear cartograms and posts a link to an old blog post.
  • Far & Wide presents some interesting Facts on World Maps.
  • An article in Wired magazine explains the difference between geocodes and addresses in the context of post-hurricane operations in Puerto Rico.
  • On 14-17 May the OSGeo Community Sprint 2019 will take place in Minnesota, USA.

Mapping

  • The voting for the proposal camp_site=camp_pitch was started, exactly 4 years after it was drafted by user n76. The proposal allows mappers to mark locations of individual sites for tents or caravans within a camp site.
  • User amilopowers suggests surface=whispering_asphalt or surface=silent_asphalt that would allow noise pollution assessments for roads. However, most responders on the tagging mailing list prefer other ways of tagging such as asphalt:type=* or asphalt=whisper or noise_reducing_surface=yes.
  • iD now has a tag for something that is not allowed to exist in many countries: shop=cannabis
  • Valor Naram’s proposal to mark the possibilities to change the baby’s nappy with changing_table=* received mixed feedback after it was moved for voting.

Community

  • Enock Seth Nyamador, founder of OSM Ghana, has been accepted on a masters GIS course in Munich. Unfortunately he was not successful in obtaining a scholarship through Erasmus Mundi, and is now trying to raise funds to enable him to follow the course by crowd-funding on Go Fund Me.
  • The Mexican TV station TV UNAM aired an interview with Miriam Gonzales and Céline Jacquin from the Mexican OpenStreetMap community about OSM.
  • Valeriy Trubin started a series ([1](automatic translation), [2](automatic translation)) of interviews with Russian OSM mappers. They talk about how they came into OSM, how they see its future and what they would like to change in OSM.
  • In Russia, an initiative, “Spring staircases” (automatic translation) took place at the end of April. During the one week, contributors mapped entrances of staircases in residential buildings and associated flat numbers. As a result (automatic translation), fifteen hundred staircases were added to OSM.
  • Maitraye Das, a PhD researcher, at North-western University in Evanston, Illinois reports, at ACM CHI 2019, a conference of the Association for Computing Machinery, about an investigation of gender-biased contributions to OpenStreetMap in the USA. Where possible a gender was assigned to the top 2000 contributors, and scored mapping of ‘masculinised’ and ‘feminised’ (their terminology) points of interest. In line with other studies OSM contributors were identified as predominantly male (~95%), but “we do not see evidence of gender-based self-focus bias in their contributions”.
  • Pokhara, a metropolitan city in Nepal, launched Map Book, a paper atlas made using OpenStreetMap. The atlas was created using new and existing data uploaded to the Secondary Cities (2C) projects’ Geonode web portal and OpenStreetMap (OSM). The local geospatial data was generated by Kathmandu Living Labs (KLL), supported by the 2C Pokhara project. KLL worked directly with the local administration to add many POIs related to health, water supply, education, and business.

Imports

  • Robert Bell (Itsamap! on OSM & bjjptq on Reddit) provides a highly detailed view of how they approached obtaining access to local data and then imported it into OpenStreetMap. Persistence and extended dialogue with local officials (especially in the GIS department) were key to obtaining data. In addition there is a lot of detailed advice about how to then structure the import.

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • The minutes of the OSMF Board meeting on 24th April, with the exception of a non-public item concerning GlobalLogic, have been published.

Events

  • Srikar Arepalli is looking for someone to talk about OSM at the VNR GNU/Linux Users Group in Hyderabad, India during July.
  • The SotM Africa conference will take place in Grand Bassam, Côte d’Ivoire, from 2019-11-22 until 2019-11-24. Deadlines are :
    • 20th May for scholarship applications;
    • and 31st May for talk submissions.
  • During the ESA Living Planet Symposium conference two tasks (on the teachosm platform) will be presented and launched. The tasks are concerned with climate change, rising sea levels and deforestation.
  • OSM France announced (fr) details of the Annual General Meeting of the association to be held in Montpellier in the course of SotM-FR 2019. The deadline for proposing candidates for the General Council and motions for the meeting is June 1st.
  • In two blog articles geologist recaps his experience with the Maker Faire Vienna 2019 where OSM AT participated as exhibitor (day 1 automatic translation, day 2 automatic translation).
  • OpenSaar e.V. organizes together with Doctors Without Borders, Germany and the Erasmus+ project of BBS Saarburg euYoutH_OSM in the run-up to LGM2019 a first mapathon in Saarland on May 29th from 15:00 to 18:00. Please register.

Humanitarian OSM

  • Kuo-Yu Chuang introduced HOT and Missing Maps to hundreds of participants at one of the biggest mapathons ever held in Taiwan.
  • Melanie Eckle from the Heidelberg University’s GIScience Research Group will join the Multi-Hazard Early Warning conference on 13th -14th May to provide insights into the benefits of Missing Maps and to the disaster related services which are already been provided by the University.
  • During the past months a team of HOT has analysed the mapping and validation workflows of the Tasking Manager to prepare it for the next big update with machine learning and more open data support. In a blog post Leihla Pinho details the undertakings to improve data quality, increase the speed of mapping, and improve user return rate.

Maps

  • Museos Abiertos is a non-profit organisation that works to open up the heritage of museums and helps different governmental and private organisations to manage their heritage and digital archives efficiently. They have now published a map of the museums in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
  • Jeisenbe has submitted a pull request for the rendering of ridges and arêtes in OSM’s main (Carto-CSS) style. This is still work-in-progress, but the discussion and ideas may be informative for anyone interested in mountainous countryside.
  • National Rail, the association of train operators in Great Britain, have developed a map showing accessibility information for railway stations. The base map uses OSM.
  • In Belgium the four public transport operators worked together to create a Smart Mobility Planner where trajectories can be looked up that take real-time data of each operator account. The itinerary is shown on a background based on OSM.

Open Data

  • The UK Ministry of Industry has been supporting an initiative for local governments to make transport data more readily available for many uses. One transport provider, Nottingham City Transport, has recently announced a suite of open data to meet these objectives. Along with their own data on bus routes, stops, timetables and tickets, they also provide an extract of OpenStreetMap data (in XML format) relevant to their route network.

Licences

  • In response to our article last week about Oracle’s licensing changes in Java, the JOSM developers published a statement explaining that nothing changed for the free version of Java, OpenJDK, nor Oracle’s JRE 8. Therefore, the licensing changes do not affect JOSM and the developers recommend that you keep using your current Java version, applying any update and wait for an OpenJDK published by the community that will be available on every platform. weeklyOSM started to translate the statement into German, French, …

Software

  • Bryan Housel announces that the next version of iD will prevent users deleting features with a wikidata tag. The context shown in the twitter thread is that inexperienced users often delete place nodes without realising. The ‘child safety lock’ can be bypassed if one deletes the wikidata= tag first.
  • Fabina Kowatsch has published the fifth part of the blog series “How to become ohsome“.
  • [1] Pascal Neis in a twitter discussion about building quality announced the detection of unsquared buildings by osm-suspicious within your country/area . To monitor building imports, it is possible to filter comments for import and key filter for building.

Programming

  • This year 5 projects were accepted for Google Summer of Code:
    • Iason Manoloudis: 3D Traffic Sign Rendering in OSM2World
    • Thomas Hervey: HOT Task Manager Integration
    • Tanya Haddad: Adding Wikidata to Nominatim
    • Vishal R: Tool to Generate Bounding Nodes for Buildings and Quality Assurance
    • Ashish Singh: JOSM's PT_Assistant plugin
  • Simon Poole writes in his OSM diary about the potential problems for mapping apps with Google’s introduction of scoped storage for Android.
  • Ilya Zverev writes (ru) (automatic translation) on his blog about the rise and fall of the Open Source Routing Machine, OSRM for short, which Mapbox stopped contributing to after taking over the Valhalla development team a year ago.

Releases

Did you know …

  • … that to please Christopher Beddow, Pascal Neis has added Richard Fairhurst’s Deriviste editor to “How did You Contribute” (HYDC) to OSM.
  • Harry Potter Wizards Unite is a new location-based augmented reality game from Niantic, the creators of Ingress and Pokémon Go. The latter became somewhat famous within the OSM community as a continual source of dubious edits, because it used OSM data for background maps and game data . These edits were mainly parks; added by gamers in the hope of increasing the number of Pokémon creatures in a given area (known as the ‘spawn rate’).
  • Richard Fairhurst’s cycle.travel? It is a website dedicated to cyclists using tags such as surface= or bicycle related access restriction to make it as useful as possible.
  • … there are different tags for recycling of appliance batteries (recycling:batteries) and automotive batteries (recycling:car_batteries)? And that our Wiki knows about 70 different things that can be recycled?

OSM in the media

  • Infofunes.com.ar reports (automatic translation) about the work done by Franco Benedetti (@mweper) in the small town of Funes, Argentina. He improves OSM by cycling through the city, taking pictures with Mapillary and enriching his contributions with Wikipedia information.

Other “geo” things

  • Pascal Neis uploaded all his OSM presentations (most of them in German) to github.
  • The History online magazine Entre-Temps reports
on the work done by Old Maps Online over the last 10 years to digitize and georeference Historical maps from libraries around the world. You can see old maps of your town and even «diamonds» like Orbis terrae compendiosa descriptio by Mumoldus Mercator (1587).
  • Guy Shrubshole, of UK Friends of the Earth, has written a book Who Owns England about land ownership in England (reviewed in The Guardian). For several years he has been blogging about aspects of the research done for this book, including a recent post about the surprisingly large area (17% of the country) which is not registered with the cadastral authority, the Land Registry.
  • May 2nd was the 500th anniversary of Leonardo da Vinci’s death. He drew maps and city plans, as seen from the air, like this one of Imola in 1502. A short film by VOX provides a little more explanation.

Mapping

  • Osmose now uses the MapCSS validation rules of the OpenRailwayMap project to validate railway infrastructure.
  • Dr Erin Ryan found a number of gaps and errors in OpenStreetMap data around Charlottesville, Virginia when trying to geocode arrest data. Various types of errors were noted: apparent multiple locations for a prison and the complete absence of the suffix “Extended” on some roads (e.g. Avon Street).
  • Christopher Beddow, from Mapillary, has been travelling and recently he was lucky to have good weather whilst capturing some splendid scenery in Scotland.
  • A golf simulator using OSM data leads to very detailed mapping of golf courses.
  • Nick Bolten wants to change the way we tag pedestrian crossings as he thinks that crossing=* has problems in terms of orthogonality, understand-ability and semantic correctness. With his proposal for crossing=marked he is disturbing a wasps nest: the tag has already been implemented in iD but the usage is disputed.
  • Quincy Morgan, one of the maintainers of the iD editor, introduced a new tag nonsquare=yes. This is meant for buildings with some, or all, corners not being a right angle. The idea is to avoid such buildings showing up as validation issues. He ignored requests to discuss such a change with the OSM community. This is criticised by multiple users on the Talk mailing list.
  • TBKMrt wants to extend the range of values for the key toll= beyond yes/no, which are currently 98.98% of the values. He suggests toll=<COUNTRY CODE>:<TYPE> with <TYPE> being one of fee, vignette, meter or no. The key toll:type= could be used with distance or time.

Community

  • dktue, a German OSM mapper, asked (automatic translation) on Talk-AT why postal codes in Austria are not recorded nationwide, as they are in Germany. In the course of the discussion it turned out that he means postal code multipolygons, which cannot be recorded easily due to the lack of data in Austria.
  • Well-known Russian mapper Ilya Zverev started a podcast about GIS-technology “Mapokalypse” (in Russian) with Sergei Golubev and Maxim Dubinin (CEO of NextGIS). Together they discuss one specific topic connected to GIS in each episode. The last podcast “OpenStreetMap kills” (automatic translation) was about the negative impact of OSM.
  • alexkemp analysed the spam flood that has reached OSM diaries since the end of April with up to 30,000 spam-posts daily. In his blog post he details his suggested “no-edit, no-diary” rule to stop the spam.

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • The German local chapter FOSSGIS received funding requests for an OpenLayers code sprint (de) (automatic translation) and a replacement for the Overpass development server (de) (automatic translation). The OpenLayers developers want to spend five days to make the open source Javascript library faster, easier to use and more error-free. The requested Overpass server will replace the existing, five year old development machine.
  • The minutes of the Licence Working Group meeting on 11 April were published.
  • The OSMF Board will meet physically in Brussels later in May and asks for topics and issues that the community thinks should be considered. If you have a topic, you are asked to fill out the survey.
  • The Open Source Initiative approached the OSMF last year and asked whether OSMF wants to become an affiliate and follow organisations like the Linux Foundation, the Python Software Foundation, Wikimedia Foundation and many more. The OSMF board decided in favour and the application has been accepted.

Events

  • The website of FOSS4G Hokkaido 2019 has been opened (automatic translation). The meeting will be held in Sapporo on July 12 and 13. Applications for presentation and workshop subjects will be accepted until May 24.

Humanitarian OSM

  • Mapillary and HOT are collaborating to speed up map data collection in undermapped regions with the launch of the #map2020 campaign. #map2020 asks local mappers to submit street level imagery using projects that collect data for humanitarian purposes. The two winning projects will be invited to the HOT Summit in Heidelberg, Germany in September this year.

Maps

  • Bexhill-OSM, a detailed map of Bexhill-on-Sea, England, added a feature to view 1300 photos of notable buildings, including 360 panoramas, in full screen. A short guide is included in this tweet.
  • The public Swiss geoportal made an OSM-based vector tile map available. As Boris Mericskay points out (fr) (automatic translation) in his tweet, the test map style can be customised to a certain extent.
  • The Russian OSM website openstreetmap.ru has recently updated POI and address information.
  • Dmitriy Konoshonkin created a guide around Krasnoyarsk (Russia). As a base map he used OpenStreetMap. (ru)

switch2OSM

  • OpenStreetMap US points to an Associated Press article on how data from U.S. Census Bureau, Cal Fire and OpenStreetMap were combined to evaluate fire-related evacuation routes.

Open Data

  • CycleStreets wrote a blog post about the proposed release of information on 240,000 cycling infrastructure assets in Greater London by Transport for London as open data. The blog article points to a newly created demo map for selected areas to allow OSM mappers to evaluate the data. Please note that we are not yet allowed to use the data for OSM purposes.

Software

  • CleanTechnica, a cleantech-focused website, promotes A Better Route Planner (ABRP), a router dedicated to electric vehicles, and OpenStreetMap, on which ABRP is based. The website explains why OSM matters and how users can start editing to improve electric-based mobility.
  • geohacker from Development Seed introduces the offline-first field mapping tool called “Observe”. The comprehensive blog post covers the motivation, a short user guide, future plans and asks for feedback.

Releases

  • Leaflet version 1.5.1 has just been announced. If you had troubles with the module export regression, whose fix is the only changelog entry, then you should update.
  • Westnordost has released version 12 of StreetComplete. The new version added the new quest “What is the name of this place?” and comes with some minor improvements.
  • Many new tests have recently been added to the Jungle Bus validators for JOSM (which improve the quality of public transport data in OSM):
    • on the new tags interval, opening_hours and interval:conditional
    • on line colours
    • on the tag differences between the route_master relationship and its route relationships
    • on the walking bus lines
    • on the geometry of bus stops and bus stations
    • etc.

These validators can be enabled in Preferences > Data Validator > Attribute Checker Rules tab.
Your help is welcome to translate these new tests.

  • The OsmAnd team promised to bring the iOS version of its navigation app up to the same level as on Android. Version 2.70 has recently been released. Their blog post details the new features. However, there is still some way to go as the Android version was upgraded to 3.30 in March 2019.

Did you know …

  • … the Lifecycle prefixes with which you can describe the current status of an important object? The prefixes are mainly used to separate objects and facilities that are planned or under construction or that have been closed, expired, removed (also translocated) or destroyed from currently existing objects, in order to continue to find them in the OSM database.
  • … how to tag a door that opens automatically? The key for this is automatic_door. This can be important information for handicapped people who may need to know if they can use a door without help.
  • … this video clip (pt) from the Portuguese channel TVI? It was pointed out to us by a reader and documents the usage of OSM at the public Civil Protection authority.
  • openSenseMap, the map with open sensor data? The senseBox offers students and interested citizens an OSM platform to collect and publish measurement data.

OSM in the media

  • In Russia an interview (ru) (automatic translation) with Russian cartographer Nikita came out on the radio station “Echo of Moscow” on the programme “Inside”. In his interview Nikita often mentions OpenStreetMap. For example, he thinks that the basics of OSM should be taught in schools in geography lessons.
  • OpenStreetMap was featured (ja) in the latest issue of Japanese GIS magazine (Map Central). The contents were about crisis mapping, mapping parties, ODbL, and so on. Of course community members contributed those articles. (automatic translation)

Other “geo” things

  • Timofey Samsonov et.al. describe in a paper (PDF) the automated addition of intermediate contour lines. Software for the generation of main and counting contour lines has been available for about 50 years. However, intermediate contour lines are only drawn where there is space and it makes sense for the terrain to be shown. An ArcGIS version can be found on GitHub.
  • The Linux Foundation, backed by a number of large companies, has established the Urban Computing Foundation, which is dedicated to open source software with a focus on mobility.
  • ZDNet reports on a project started by the UK’s national mapping agency, the Ordnance Survey, that aims to create a highly precise real-time map for 5G planning and autonomous driving. It is intended to collect the data by processing imagery taken by the camera-equipped cars of utility companies.

Mapping

Community

  • For several weeks now the desirable contributions in the OSM user blogs have sunk under a deluge of spam. There are people who are calling for countermeasures, such as forced moderation for all new user accounts. alexkemp, who has been involved with forum spam for some time, suspects that the current wave of spam is just the beginning.
  • OSM Foundation Japan had a meetup (ja) between board members and local mappers to build a better community. Many proposals for improvements were made holding mapping parties and the promotion of OSM.
  • Ilya Zverev in his blog “SHTOSM” ponders (automatic translation) why anyone in the 21st century would need paper maps.

Events

  • As Laura Mugeha has tweeted, SotM Africa, which will take place on 22-24 November 2019 in Grand-Bassam, Ivory Coast, needs more workshop proposals.
  • So far only one of talks for the State of the Map US has been submitted by a woman. The organisers are determined to change that, though the target of more than 50 percent of all talks to be submitted by women appears challenging.

Education

  • Heidelberg University’s GIScience Research Group has used the example of health-related amenities to explore the development of OSM data over time. The results provide deep insight into mapping patterns such as the saturation of an area with a given tag, spin-offs in the form of tag diversification such as amenity=hospital -> amenity=clinic and the erratically increasing usage of the tag as usually seen when a country gets into the scope of the humanitarian sector.

Maps

  • Can you escape from traffic in a city? Hans Hack has created (de) a map for Berlin showing the places which are farthest away from a road.
  • The public Swiss geoportal, which has recently introduced an OSM-based vector tile test map with customisable map style, has updated its map with the Mapbox rendering engine. Jeff Konnen from Luxembourg announced that geoportail.lu will “copy” this. Gonza from Argentina reports in a tweet that mapa.ign.gob.ar has also integrated OSM into its base map.
  • Greenpeace has created a map of air quality in Russian cities. It uses OpenStreetMap as a basemap.

Open Data

  • …Almost a year ago Tolyatti city administration (Russia) made its official GIS-portal “EMGIS” open to everybody. The portal is now under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International licence. Moreover, the OSM community received permission (automatic translation) to use the portal.

Software

  • OSGeoLive 13.0 has reached Alpha status and the developers are looking for volunteer testers. OSGeoLive is a Linux Live distribution, which is equipped with current Open Source GIS programs.
  • Peermaps wants to become a distributed, offline-friendly alternative to commercial map providers such as Google Maps. It plans to use peer-to-peer network techniques to share the hosting of files. The project has received funding to build an initial prototype which will display a regularly updated OSM-based map.
  • Russian OSMers Alexander Pankratov and Alexander Istomin have developed a JOSM map style “Building_Levels_Labels” for highlighting objects without specified “floors” attributes. The map style has been translated into English.

Did you know …

  • … Pascal’s blog post #100? Pascal’s tools are an integral part of the OSM ecosystem.
  • … the Russian company NextGIS developed an interactive map showing the dynamics of the political borders of Russia and its predecessors. Also they share insights about how this map was created.
  • … how to tag shops offering vegan, halal, kosher or gluten-free products? The keys diet:vegan, diet:halal, diet:kosher, diet:gluten_free and several more can be added to mark them.
  • Long-serving OSMers may still remember how the Maxheight map started in 2012. In its current form, the map not only shows worldwide missing maxheight= tags, but also provides overlays for other truck-related tags. The documentation on the Wiki describes the various ways you can help improve the map.

Other “geo” things

  • In the Strike Tracker project, Amnesty International used satellite imagery and crowdsourcing to analyse air strikes on the Iraqi city of Raqqa. More than 3000 volunteers collected the data; an analysis website including an OSM map summarises the results.
  • Mapillary’s #CompleteTheMap is back. The challenge kicks off in June—read more in the Mapillary blog.
  • Microsoft follows Niantic, who has published the augmented reality games Ingress and Pokémon GO, and announced an AR version of Minecraft, called Minecraft Earth. The announcement had extensive press coverage, for instance in Wired and CNN. The game is expected to use Microsoft’s Azure Spatial Anchors , which is Azure’s cloud system combined with OpenStreetMap data, rather than GPS for positioning. It remains to be seen what impact the game will have on OSM.
  • Garmin launched a device with an OSM-based topo map pre-installed. The Garmin Overlander comes with a proprietary road navigation and topographic OSM map and costs €699. OSM as a map source is only mentioned in the German press release (de) (automatic translation).

Mapping

  • Christopher Beddow, from Mapillary, has written a blog post about two different ways contributors can use Mapillary data to edit OpenStreetMap.
  • Joseph Eisenberg drafted a proposal for golf=cartpath, which is intended for paths within golf courses that are designated for golf carts.
  • Leif Rasmussen incorporated feedback on his connectivity= proposal and asks for final feedback before he moves to the voting phase. The proposal aims to improve the ability to store much richer data about lanes than is currently possible with turn:lanes=.
  • Joseph Eisenberg proposes unifying the tags for individual pitches within a campsite and suggests deprecating camp_site=camp_pitch and camp_site=pitch and replacing these tags with tourism=camp_pitch.

Community

  • Tense discussions about iD and the legitimation of the iD maintainers to unilaterally decide mapping questions such as the implementation of new tags without the OSM community resurfaced following the widely, on GitHub, OSM’s tagging mailing list and the general mailing list disputed decision to implement a validation rule asking to add highway=footway to railway/public_transport=platform.
The disputes followed shortly after the invention of nosquare=yes to “resolve all unsquare way issues” which was also widely challenged on GitHub and the general mailing list.
During the discussion some ideas like an iD fork or potential policies for developers were raised. Unfortunately the discussions escalated and led the iD maintainer Bryan Housel to lock a ticket in GitHub which was seen as rant by others and led SomeoneElse to submit a code of conduct complaint about the used comment.
The discussion spilled over to the mailing list of the OSM Foundation, where Christine Karch offered a slot at the upcoming SotM on 21–23 September 2019, an offer declined by iD’s key maintainer Bryan Housel.
  • Researchers from Denver & Singapore published a paper entitled Corporate Editors in the Evolving Landscape of OpenStreetMap in the ISPRS International Journal of Geo-Information (an open-access journal hosted by MDPI).The paper describes the influence of corporate editors such as Apple, Microsoft, and Facebook on the development of OSM in the historical development of these activities. The investigation, which was carried out on the basis of 10 selected companies, found that corporate mapping focuses thematically on roads and raised questions about how OSM should deal with the growth in corporate edits.
  • The latest issue of the International Journal of Geographical Information Science has a number of papers about “Volunteered Geographical Information”, many based on analysing OpenStreetMap contributions. Hakaly et. al. provide an overview in their editorial.
  • Apparently, the OSM forum is having issues with right-to-left written scripts. The failure to support scripts used in large parts of the world collides with OSM’s mission to build and support local communities. (The forum link requires OSM login to view.)
  • A new UN report notes growing interest in crowdsourced maps and calls OpenStreetMap “foundational to almost all risk sciences”.

Events

  • State of the Map France announced the provisional programme for the 2019 conference, to be held in Montpellier in the middle of June. They encourage you to register.
  • Ticket sales for the State of the Map conference 2019 in Heidelberg, Germany, has just started. Early Bird discounts are available for a limited albeit undisclosed time.

Humanitarian OSM

  • Missing Maps report on their blog a recent mission by member organisation CartONG to Burkina Faso. Prior to on-the-ground mapping, informal settlements around Ouagadougou were mapped remotely in mapathons. The team from CartONG collaborated with a local group, Yaam Solidarité, to train surveyors and collect map data.

Maps

  • Campaigning has started for the municipal elections in Chelyabinsk, Russia. A website showing (ru) (automatic translation) the electoral districts and their candidates is based on OSM.
  • Steve Coast pointed to a First You Make the Maps titled story-map that explains how cartography has made global trade possible.
  • Mapbox announced that it now offers traffic data that can be used in conjunction with HERE, TomTom and OSM maps. The traffic data is collected by 45,000 Android and iOS apps and the daily total is 300 million miles driven globally.
  • gicycle used OSM data to show that a plan to ban betting shops from within 800 m of schools in Salzburg would amount to a complete ban.
  • The Russian portal “Current time” published an OSM-based interactive map (automatic translation), which shows the current formal status of the Russian language in all former Soviet republics.

switch2OSM

  • [1] Greenpeace switched its “Recycle map” in Russia from Google to OSM. Now the project is in the beta-testing phase.

Licences

  • Nuno Caldeira isn’t very happy with Facebook not attributing OSM and expresses this in a Tweet.

Software

  • Maps.Me has again started to make a weekly upload of maps for its navigator. However, the installation should be done manually.
  • Russian non-profit “Social technology greenhouse” created a plug-in for WordPress, which makes it possible to place an OSM map into the blog. They would be glad if anyone tested this plug-in and gave them feedback.

Programming

  • Pierre Béland has added preliminary versions of PostGIS Orthogonal Functions, for transforming building polygons, to the OQ_Analysis Github repo.

Releases

  • A new version of iD has been released. The new version v2.15.0 comes with a major improvement of iD’s validator, the ability to square unclosed lines and individual corners, straightening is now possible on sub-sections of lines and many more improvements, new features and fixes.

Did you know …

  • …the R242 road to Malin Head on the Inishowen Peninsula in County Donegal, Ireland was recently renamed to R2D2 in tribute to the robot from Star Wars. The area features in The Last Jedi (Star Wars Episode VIII) filmed in 2016. The road has not yet been updated on OSM as there was concern this was a hoax.
  • … how to tag a historic stone block? It might be a megalith: historic=archaeological_site and site_type=megalith.

Other “geo” things

  • Ed Freyfogle (OpenCageData) was interviewed about geocoding on the MapScaping podcast.
  • update: Mapillary opened a marketplace for street-level imagery and the manual validation of geospatial data extracted from images using Mapillary’s Machine Learning technology.
  • Mapbox changed their pricing scheme to use a new calculation method. Details can be found on the Mapbox Blog. The old pricing can be viewed on the Internet Archive.

Mapping

  • The latest version of “How Did You Contribute” by Pascal Neis now uses osmose to display information about the quality of the user’s edits.
  • Facebook’s Maps Team announced the RapiD Editor based on iD, which enables mappers to convert data they extracted using machine learning into OSM features.
  • WiGeoGIS, a contractor of the fuel station chain OMV, announced plans to improve and maintain fuel stations of the brands OMV, AVANTI, Petrom, FE Trading and EuroTruck in OSM. See also the discussion on the Talk mailing list (May, June).
  • Valor Naram put a revised version of changing_table=* tagging to a vote.
  • Developers of the Maps.me navigator, which uses OSM data, created a validator for underground railways (subways/metros) all over the world.

Community

  • Simon Poole made some suggestions on the Tagging mailing list on how to deal with the increasing number of messages and proposals there. There were lots of replies.
  • Recently the Kazakhstan OSM community created a Telegram chat.

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • Joost Schouppe reports about the OSMF Board meeting in Brussels (including discussing the survey that was carried out beforehand) on the OSM Foundation’s blog.

Events

  • OpenStreetMap Argentina announces a local State of the Map to be held on Saturday 27th July in Santa Fe.

Humanitarian OSM

  • HOT shares on their blog about an experimental version of the Tasking Manager which incorporates machine learning assistance for various tasks.
  • Simon Johnson writes on Medium about how “big data” in the humanitarian community is often at odds with the idea of “minimum viable data” – the idea that less data is actually more valuable because it’s better quality and easier to verify.
  • In Better Bombing with Machine Learning Frederik Ramm points out that computer vision/machine learning could be used by military forces for aerial bombing, and the OSM community should consider whether we should be so jubilant regarding companies that use those technologies for improving OSM.

Maps

  • Richard Fairhust tweets an example of using Lua to automatically transliterate names whilst processing OSM data for rendering. Post-processing OSM data in this way often removes the need for many name:<iso-code> tags.
  • The map of electoral districts on the website of the Magnitogorsk City (in Russia) is based on OSM.
  • A map of roads that are or will be repaired has been posted on the website of the Russian federal program “Safe and high-quality roads”. It is based on OSM but first you need to choose a region.

Releases

  • A new stable JOSM version (15155) was released. Category icons and a field for filtering background image settings have been added. Dynamic entries in the Background Images menu are displayed in submenus as well as many more improvements.
  • The OsmAnd Online GPS Tracker has been updated to version 0.5. New features are contact search, proxy settings, GPS settings and active markers.
  • Thanks to v2.0 of Babykarte, babies will not lose their way anymore. Or rather, it will become easier for parents to find baby and toddler friendly amenities (map).

Did you know …

OSM in the media

  • This short podcast from BBC Radio 4 asks the question: are there more stars in the universe than grains of beach sand on Earth? A contributor to the programme, using the OSM Planet File, computed an approximation for the amount of beach sand on the planet Earth.
  • An interview with Russian mapper Ilya Zverev has been posted (ru) on Habr. He spoke about what he did during his two years on the OSMF Board, why the American OSM society is the most friendly and why you need to participate in offline conferences. (automatic translation)

Other “geo” things

  • How to make a Simpsons-inspired map with expressions.
  • John Murray has been using the recent release of Rapids AI, a data science library for GPUs, to compute distances to everywhere in Great Britain from a point in a few seconds.
  • An extract from a forthcoming book by Barbara Tversky discusses “What makes a good map?”
  • An outdoor clothing company has been sneakily adding photos of its products to Wikipedia articles, in an attempt to get their brand higher up in Google image results. Just another danger of an open wiki system that we must be aware of.
  • Daniel J-H announced the release of a new version of RoboSat, which can detect roads and buildings in aerial imagery.
  • Die Welt has an article (automatic translation) about the best apps for water sports enthusiasts.

Mapping North Korea a new project from Maarten van den Hoven 1 | Map data © OpenStreetMap contributors, ODbL

Mapping

  • Jean-Louis Zimmerman tweets (fr) a few unusual curiosities which may challenge OSM mapping and tagging. (automatic translation)
  • Joseph Eisenberg has posted his proposal for the tag waterway=tidal channel to the tagging mailing list for discussion. It is based on a discussion that took place in September 2018 to map natural tidal waterways.
  • The OSM mapper Simon Legner reported (translation) on the Talk-at mailing list that he added the new layers of the Austrian government’s Open Data portal (OGD) to the editor layer index. He describes more about it on his github page.
  • [1] Mapping North Korea is a new project from Maarten van den Hoven to remotely map North Korea, with a Tasking Manager style web interface.
  • In order to be able to help people in crisis areas quickly, helpers depend on high-quality maps. For many areas, these maps must first be produced. In doing so, Doctors Without Borders is supported by modern technology – and by thousands of volunteers. On 25 June 2019 from 19:00 – 22:00, meet interested people for a Missing Maps Mapathon at Wikimedia in Berlin.

Community

  • Nicolas Chavent published a Twitter moment about two weeks of OSM and free Geomatics training in Brazzaville (Congo) targeted to the local OSM community and stakeholders from the research, development and local authorities. The courses were facilitated with the help of members of Congolese communities and a Togolese mapper with the support of the International Organisation of Francophonie (OIF).
  • On the mailing list OSM-talk the question was asked whether there are volunteers who want to organise a discussion forum at the upcoming SotM about the OSM Editor iD. However, a suggestion was made that it is not a good idea to hold a “tribunal” on iD, but that it would be better to collect ideas by September 1st and then discuss them.
  • The OSM user Joseph Eisenberg asked on the mailing list OSM-talk whether the element data item on OSM Wiki pages should be used for description texts. The reason for this is that he found no or only very short descriptions for the tags, natural=peninsula and natural=isthmus on the wiki pages. When editing the wiki pages he could not find an element for the description and was referred to the element data item by other OSM users. Eisenberg also says that the wiki page for the element is very confusing and therefore its use is not clear to him.
  • A discussion (translation) about the mapping of “unpacked” stores on the German forum, previously tagged with bulk_purchase, was followed by a discussion (translation) on the French forum on the same topic, but independently of each other. Now new tagging is discussed together in English under the heading “Tag[ging] shops accepting that customers bring their own containers”.

Imports

  • HOT have set up a Tasking Manager for computer vision imports.

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • The minutes of the meeting of the OSMF Data Working Group on 22 May 2019 have been published.

Humanitarian OSM

  • The website geospatialworld has published an article about the Missing Map project. It introduces the project and its goals.
  • Intel Folsom hosted a mapathon with the Missing Maps Project. Estimated attendance was 56 mappers, plus 2 volunteers from the Red Cross and 1 volunteer from Intel to answer their questions. You can read more here.

Maps

  • Said Turksever tweeted about ICT4Society in Turkey, a project using OSM and Mapillary to help improve social inclusion for people with disabilities, and links to the resulting map.

Licences

  • Following a long discussion with Facebook and their map suppliers (Mapbox), Nuno Caldeira asked the Board of OSMF about terminating Facebook’s rights under ODbL. As source of his request he mentioned chapter 9.4 c) of the ODbL. This follows a long discussion about attribution of OSM in February and March this year on the main “talk” list.

Software

  • K_sakanoshita published (Twitter, Facebook) new version of “Machi-aruki Map maker“, used for creating printed maps for disaster planning etc. New features are now available to add cafes and restaurants, fire hydrant icons and labels.

Programming

  • Quincy Morgan suggests in a GitHub ticket that iD from version 3.0 should become a general GeoJSON editor.

Releases

  • In the new release of OsmAnd 2.80 (iOS), Mapillary photos are displayed for navigation, as is already the case on Android. In addition to performance improvements there were many other adjustments. You can read more about this in OsmAnd’s blog.

Did you know …

  • … a few lines of code with the 3-D Tool 3D OSM Buildings lets us rotate a panoramic view.

Other “geo” things

  • The longest glass floor bridge in the world was recently opened in East China as a new attraction in the “Huaxi World Adventure Park” at the Great Wall of China. With a length of 518 m it replaces the previous record holder (488 m). Here’s where you can find this on OSM.
  • Margaret Lee describes in Mapbox’s blog “The route from a blank map to a live map”.
  • Malvika Mahesh, a research intern of the Observer Research Foundation, writes in his article “Drawing Lines On The Internet: Border Conflicts And The Politics Behind Digital Maps” on the different treatment of borders in digital maps. He also praises OpenStreetMap’s “on the ground” rule (see also OSM’s Disputed Territories (PDF) policy – itself not always accepted across the board in OSM) , and criticises Google’s current approach. An interesting link from that article is a map summarising worldwide disputes.
  • World Environment Day took place on 5 June. A post at the University of Heidelberg’s GIScience News Blog links to the global OSM-based climate protection map, with a call to contribute to climate protection through more sustainable lifestyles.
  • The changes in Berlin from being a car-friendly to a bicycle-friendly city can be seen at FixMyBerlin, where the current state of cycle-friendliness is also displayed.
  • BMW published (translation) “safety-relevant traffic data”, collected by BMW vehicles, under the CC-BY-NC-SA license, which excludes commercial use, but which a BMW press release incorrectly describes as “free”.

The talks held at the recent State of the Map France are available online. 1 | Photo © Thomas Lombard, CC0

Mapping

  • Mateusz Konieczny plans to remove duplicates tags such as sustenance=fast_food together with amenity=fast_food and atm=yes with amenity=atm. Like all mechanical edit plans, this one has caused some discussion on the tagging mailing list.
  • Joseph Eisenberg revived his idea to tag individual pitches within a campsite with his proposal of tourism=camp_pitch. His previous rejected proposal was named camp_site=camp_pitch.
  • On the Talk-at mailing list, OSM mapper Christian Aigner asked (automatic translation) how to map schools for Shiatsu training. Since he didn’t find a suggestion in the OSM Wiki, he asked if he should use the tags amenity=education and education=shiatsu. This was denied because amenity=education was set to be deprecated. Another OSM mapper referred him to the German OSM Forum.
  • The revised version of the proposal Key:changing_table has been accepted, and it now replaces Key:diaper. Valor Naram has written an orientation guide for mappers who may be familiar with the old key.
  • Geofabrik has rewritten the Routing View in OSM Inspector, which is used by many mappers to find unconnected roads and other routing-related issues. The blog article at the company’s homepage provides some more details on the changes.
  • OSMCha now supports creating groups of OSM mappers, and either filtering or hiding changesets made by group members.

Community

  • Starting with the Milton Keynes South parliamentary constituency on 12 June 2019, the UK OpenStreetMap community launched a series of UK 24 hours mapathons to improve the map of the UK. Parliamentary constituencies were chosen as they have roughly equal populations.
  • The Swiss OpenStreetMap Association has published a blog post detailing its activities in 2018 and the outlook for the near future.

Imports

  • Alexis Athlan from L214, a French Animal Welfare Organisation, announced the plan to import tags which describe the availability of vegan and vegetarian food in 1400 restaurants in France.
  • David Morais Ferreira requested feedback concerning a possible import of around 500 remarkable trees in Luxembourg.
  • Atakua wrote about the things he has learnt during the import of landuse/landcover data in Sweden. The comprehensive blog post is a must read for all those interested in the topic as it covers a lot of practical guidance and goes far beyond the content of this topic in the OSM wiki.

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • The OSMF published the Annual Report (PDF) of FOSSGIS e.V., its local chapter in Germany.
  • The minutes of the License Working Group meeting on 9 May have been published. The draft Attribution Guidance was discussed during the meeting and readers may remember that the attribution topic caused some noise in the community recently.

Events

  • [1] The talks held at the recent State of the Map France are being posted online (fr).
  • SNCF engineers presented the joint work of SNCF and Geofabrik, Karlsruhe, on the development of a routing tool for calculating train paths on the European rail network. Their innovative clothing also impressed many during the SotM France. 😉
  • OSM Mapper ScubbX has posted on the Talk-at mailing list that there are still 10 free Expo tickets available for AGIT 2019. The AGIT (2 to 5 July) is the largest geo-exhibition in the German-speaking area. The OSM community will be represented with a stand, where help is still needed.
  • Philippine OpenStreetMap contributor GOwin reported about an upcoming local conference, Pista ng Mapa, to be held on 1 to 3 August in Dumaguete City. The conference will feature workshops, talks about open geodata, OpenStreetMap, and discussion panels about the concerns of the local mapping communities. The conference is open to the general public (requires RSVP), and is available free of charge.

Humanitarian OSM

  • HOT welcomed 38 new voting members.
  • The daily newspaper Trierischer Volksfreund reported about a mapathon in Saarbücken. Vocational school students supported the organisation Doctors Without Borders by using their mapping skills acquired in an Erasmus+ project to make it easier for beginners to take their first steps in JOSM. Together they improved the map data in Congo.

Education

  • After enjoying SotM-FR user Polyglot decided to organise a series of Hangout sessions in French to explain how the PT_Assistant plugin works for editing public transport itineraries. The first will be on Wednesday 26 June at 19h30 CEST.

Maps

  • OpenStreetMap Belgium announced the availability of new hillshades based on public height data in the Flemish Region and Wallonia and showcase the new layers in an online map.
  • uMap instances are becoming increasingly popular. The local German OSMF chapter FOSSGIS has funded (de) (translation) the new uMap instance at openstreetmap.de.
  • Since mid May 2019 a Twitter bot named “OSMTrekkingTips” has been tweeting a link about a castle or a palace on the “Castle Dossier Map” from the account @trending_places (translation) starting at 12 noon on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The bot was developed by Geometa Lab (Prof. Stefan Keller) to promote OSM in Swiss tourism. (Python Source Code).

Open Data

Licences

  • The OSMF License Working Group has completed an investigation (PDF) as to whether a better license exists for map tiles generated by OSMF servers than the current CC-BY-SA 2.0.

Software

  • Frédéric Rodrigo has forked the iD editor and made the version available on id.openstreetmap.fr. He has reverted some controversial, much discussed, changes made in the main branch.
  • The heads of OSMAnd and Maps.Me joined (ru) their efforts on a new project – OpenPlaceReviews. It is expected to help to map points of interest in OSM and also store reviews about them. (automatic translation)
  • The largest festivities in the Azores, Portugal, take place 21 to 30 June in Angra do Heroísmo on Terceira Island. Azoid Eco Technology (automatic translation) published an app and added an OSM-based map to every event. The app is available for iOS and Android. To know more go to www.sanjoaninas.pt (automatic translation). Maybe in 2020 they could correctly attribute and mention the origin of the data. 😉
  • The MapOSMatic instance at osm-baustelle.de now supports Umap GeoJSON files via the Umap API without browser interaction. In a blog post Hartmut explains how to do this and gives some background info.

Programming

  • There is speculation that Mapbox has stopped working on version 3.0 of its Mapbox Vector Tile specification. However, it is a fact that the Open Geospatial Consortium is working on a vectortile specification.
  • JasonManoloudis details his Google Summer of Code project in his OSM user diary. He aims to implement the ability to render traffic signs with custom text in the 3D renderer OSM2World.
  • Changeset uploads are now handled by cgimap (written in C++) instead of the Rails Port (Ruby on Rails implementation of the OSM API), making uploads faster from editors like JOSM and iD. Ilya Zverev explains (translation) the details in his blog “SHTOSM”.
  • The developer from 2GIS (a well-known navigator in Russia) writes (translation) in a corporate blog about how one can create one’s own navigator from open sources in just a couple of days.

Releases

  • The latest release of Maps (a Maps.Me fork on F-Droid), 9.1.6, finally fixes a longstanding bug preventing users from authenticating into OSM. Now it is possible to edit using the app again.
  • In his user diary Simon Poole details the changes made in the minor release of the mobile editor Vespucci, which consists of mainly UI improvements.
  • The iD maintainers have created a pull request which reverts some of the controversial
    changes, which were discussed recently.

Did you know …

  • … how to tag a a public cabinet that is used to store books to be borrowed by everybody? That’s a amenity=public_bookcase.

Other “geo” things

  • The world as a flower ball in the shore garden on the flower island Mainau in Lake Constance.
  • An online map portal for European geodata was presented at the Geospatial World Forum in Amsterdam. It was developed by thinkWhere to demonstrate the potential of a single access point to public data.

Mapping

  • In the Austrian province of Tyrol, there is often an increase in traffic on long weekends during the summer holiday period. This often results in long-distance traffic, coming to or from Italy and Germany, clogging up local roads when seeking a diversion from main routes. Politicians have now tried to prevent this by ordering weekend restrictions on long-distance traffic using local roads until 14 September. The information on the closures has been transmitted to navigation equipment manufacturers via the Ministry of the Interior. Rainer Fügenstein therefore asks Talk-at how this information can be handled in OSM.
  • Michael Brandtner suggests amenity=power_supply to mark places that provide free or paid access to an electrical outlet. The proposal includes subtags to describe the used socket, the fee, the operator, the capacity and some more. (Nabble)
  • After surveying the area and discussing with local inhabitants an Australian mapper suggests that parts of the Gwydir River mapped in OSM from “official” sources isn’t there any more and should be removed, due to changing water use. The mapper assumes that the “river on the map may be a political imperative for government.
  • Richard Fairhurst describes the latest addition to the on-line editor Potlatch-2. Specific relations can now be assigned to a function key thus simplifying the process of adding ways to a route relation. In the comments he also provides some additional hints as to how function keys can also be used for adding groups of tags.
  • WoodWoseWulf provides a lot of information in his user diary about Niantic’s Pokémon Go from an OSM perspective. He explains the game terms, how the game mechanic is influenced by OSM data and the types of “vandals” with their motivation and the type of OSM data manipulation.

Community

  • The OpenStreetMap website is available in မြန်မာဘာသာ. As you probably know, it is Burmese, officially language in Myanmar with 33 Million native speakers. In the announcement tweet Andy Allan asks for help to get your language above the 25 percent threshold.
  • Andy Allan and Ian Dees are looking for ways how to overcome persistently unfriendly and destructive behaviour which occasionally surfaces in the OSM community, especially in some mailing lists and on GitHub, and change it to a supportive and welcoming community. Ian Dees asks for an Open Source Community Manager who can help with the harsh manners that people experience too often when using OSM’s more or less anonymous communication channels.
  • Candidates for this year’s OSM Awards can be nominated until 15 July.
  • A team of five volunteer mappers from the Ghanaian OSM and Open Source communities travelled Ghana the Open Source Way; mapping, capturing street-level images and building capacity in OpenStreetMap and FOSS.
  • Following the OSM community survey asking for the main topics from a contributor’s perspective that should be discussed in the recent OSMF board meeting, the OSMF board published the outcome of the survey. In a blog post Christoph Hormann criticizes questionable ideas and tendencies and shares his thoughts on surveying the views of the community.

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • We would like to join the JOSM team and many others in spreading the message of the Operations Working Group, which is looking for volunteer helpers.

Events

  • Christine Karch asks on Osmf-talk for ideas where the SotM 2020 could take place as there are no candidates yet.
  • The State of the Map 2019 conference is just around the corner. The program for this major OSM event, taking place on 21 to 23 September 2019 in Heidelberg, Germany, is available at the SotM homepage.

Humanitarian OSM

  • At the World Refugee Day on 20 June, medium.com published an article about the joint efforts of Oregon State University, HOT and Development Seed to find refugees and internally-displaced persons following a conflict or a disaster to allow support of these people. The article explains the scale of the issue, how the task is solved and concludes with hopes that AI will allow to help more people in the near feature.
  • Maptime Salzburg will hold two YouthMappers workshops at the upcoming AGIT. The first workshop provides an introduction to humanitarian mapping, whilst the second deals with the establishment of a network of YouthMappers-Chapters in European institutions in order to promote and formalise their cooperation. The YouthMappers initiative was founded by students from US universities and already includes 143 YouthMappers Chapters in 41 countries.
  • The nomination for the upcoming HOT board election closed on 17 June 2019. There are 8 candidates for 7 available seats. Following a decision of the board the size of the board will increase by two to seven members.
  • Rebecca Firth from HOT explains how street-level imagery is used to improve OSM data in undermapped regions, in particular data about waste management, road conditions and other pressing issues.

Education

  • The small e-learning project OpenSchoolMaps from the Swiss chapter SOSM was supplemented with special teaching material (PDF): “Mapping the environment yourself”, currently in German only. Information for instructors and a worksheet for participants explain how to organize an “outdoor mapping event” and what participants should know about it. Outdoor mapping events include mapping parties and project days for school classes. Feedback is welcome, preferably as an issue on the GIT repository.

Maps

  • Sven Geggus has disabled the Open Brewpub Map and instead started the Open Brewery Map with the osmpoidb technique in the backend.
  • The Portuguese version of the Historic Place website has been updated. Currently the website has a complete interface in Brazilian Portuguese.

Open Data

  • The Yandex Company, simply put the Russian version of Google, allowed (ru) (automatic translation) OSM to use information from Yandex.Panoramas for specifying data in OpenStreetMap. This time by e-mail.

Software

  • Mateusz Konieczny has received a grant from NLnet as part of NGI Zero to work on StreetComplete. He will work mostly on open issues in GitHub.
  • The online service Sight Safari, which can build sightseeing routes, became a mobile app for Android. It’s now in the beta-testing stage. Of course, it uses OSM as a base map.

Releases

  • QGIS releases both the latest version 3.8 (Zanzibar) and a long-term release (LTR) (3.4.9). LTRs remain current for at least a year.

Did you know …

  • … the periodic table of PostgreSQL?
  • … the mobile app “OsMo monitoring” by Konstantin Moshkov? It’s a GPS tracker which allows you to share your location with others. You can also arrange a group tracking. It uses OSM as a base map, but the naming of the data origin leaves a lot to be desired.
  • … that the Russian company NextGIS together with the international non-profit organization “Memorial” created a map “It’s right here: Moscow. Topography of terror”. The map shows places in Moscow which are connected with terror in Soviet times. They use OSM as a base map.
  • … the difference between amenity=post_box and amenity=letter_box? The first one is the place you put letters to be sent, the second one is the private mailbox to receive letters. These can serve as orientation points in very rural areas where mailboxes are placed along the main roads far away from buildings.

Other “geo” things

  • The Twitter user cartocalypse has published his souvenir of a QGIS-CH meeting.
  • WGS84 is the way in which OSM data is stored, but it turns out that it’s not as simple as first appears.
  • The Africa Geospatial Data and Internet Conference 2019 will take place between 22-24 October 2019 in Accra, Ghana.
  • A report by orf.tirol shows how important geodata are for the missions of blue light organisations. It mentions the GIS tiris, which supports 358 fire brigades in the form of a web GIS.
  • According to the website thedailystar.net Facebook has unveiled an exclusive high definition area map generated by their AI team. The company claims that their population map is three times more detailed than any other source. Facebook will make the map available to the public, mainly for humanitarian purposes.
  • Michael Sumner tweets about a work that deals with the geolocalization of animals with light-detecting data loggers.
  • Google seems to struggle with hundreds of thousands of fake business listings that appear on Google Maps each month. According to an article at The Verge there are currently more than 11 million fake profiles in Google Maps.
  • A couple of Economists report on how customer ratings of food outlets in tourist areas is negatively correlated with proximity to tourist sites. Their analysis used Yelp ratings and OSM geographies.
  • The district Berlin Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg has published a map, and the underlying data, of drinking fountains.

Mapping

  • A new iD feature, which adds Wikidata and Wikipedia tags for brands of retail chains, caused issues when restaurants with very similar names were tagged mistakenly, according to a GitHub bug report. One proposed solution is to use the tag not:brand:wikidata= to avoid the tag being added again. Quincy Morgan, one of the two iD maintainers, points to the approval process before introducing it.
  • iD’s decision to support natural=water with water=reservoir instead of landuse=reservoir and to flag the latter for a tagging change led to a discussion on GitHub. The decision that was disputed isn’t new and goes back to December 2018.
  • Emily Eros from SharedStreets has published a comprehensive article about kerb management, such as parking restrictions, which is becoming an important topic for businesses and local government. She noticed a comparative absence of data in OSM on the theme and was wondering why. She analyses current usage, highlights some difficulties and proposes new ways of adding the information.
  • The addition of two new sections on the “Good Practice” wiki page led Joseph Eisenberg to consult the tagging mailing list. He felt that the new sections “Check the history of important objects” and “Don’t map insignificant, perishable and mobile object” are duplications of previous sections and removed them.
  • Leif Rasmussen announced the start of voting on the connectivity relation proposal which intends to improve the mapping of lane connections at intersections.
  • The tag tourism=camp_pitch for individual pitches within a campsite has been approved.
  • Russian OSMer Pavel Gavrilov wrote a big and comprehensive article in WikiOSM about how Strava (ru) (automatic translation) data could make OSM more accurate.

Community

  • The Data Working Group announced that it hid a handful of blog entries in the OSM user diaries which involved insulting comments.
  • The FOSSGIS, OSM’s local chapter in Germany, announced (de) (automatic translation) financial support for mapping parties at OSM’s 15th birthday on 10-11 August.
  • Chris Beddow from Mapillary blogged about the evolution of OSM, mapping technologies and OSM’s communities. His conclusion is that every mapper, every single community in OSM matters and the ties between all stakeholders, be it commercial companies or volunteers, should be made stronger.
  • A number of changes in the imagery layers within OSM editors have been made at the request of Maxar (the parent company of Digital Globe, whose products are being rebranded). Kevin Bullock of Maxar wrote a diary entry explaining these changes in more detail.Regular OSM contributors may have already noticed that the Digital Globe imagery layers have disappeared from the online editors. They will have also noted the appearance of two equivalent, but generally more up-to-date, layers called Maxar Premium and Maxar Standard. JOSM is following suit, but some performance issues will not be resolved until later in July.

The removal of the Digital Globe layers was implemented as a pull request by Bryan Housel.

  • At the beginning of June a Mapathon “June floors” took place (automatic translation) in Russia. During the week (3 to 10 June) the Russian OSM community assigned floors to buildings which didn’t have them before. 184 mappers took part in this event. Floors were updated for 7643 objects.

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • In an email to the OSMF and the Talk lists, SeverinGeo points out that the Organised_Editing_Guidelines are obviously not taken seriously. A discussion has started about this topic regarding how to handle this situation. A list of all current organised editing activities should be here.
  • Gregory Marler advertises the hosting of the next State of the Map conference with a blog post titled “Why your community should host State of the Map”.

Events

Humanitarian OSM

  • Médecins Sans Frontières is looking for helpers for two mapathons to be held in Hong Kong on Monday, 5 August and Sunday, 1 September.
  • The minutes for the HOT board meeting of 13 June 2019 have been made available.

Maps

  • Kontur has created a map showing the density of OSM objects per unit of population, mostly to help with humanitarian mapping.
  • The Nizhniy Novgorod (Russia) City Administration created (translation) a GIS-portal which shows mobile retail facilities (street kiosks) and advertising structures. OSM is used as a base map.
  • The French search engine Qwant, which targets privacy sensitive users, is starting its own map service. The privacy-preserving service Qwant Maps is based on OSM data.

switch2OSM

Software

  • omgitsgela published a guide on how to use JOSM on a Chromebook in their OSM user diary.
  • The MapOSMatic instance at osm-baustelle.de has added “OSM Notes” as an overlay you can add to your map and map index.

Programming

  • tchaddad detailed the work done on the Google Summer of Code project to add data from Wikidata to Nominatim. The first step, according to the blog post, is the update and improvement of the existing Wikipedia extraction scripts.

Releases

  • Different versions of the webapp Noticias Aquí E Agora are now available in Portuguese, French, Spanish, German, and English. The webapp Noticias Aquí E Agora makes it easy to find the nearest local independent restaurants, cafes and bookstores, which compete against chains, such as McDonalds, Starbucks and Amazon. If your favorite food location or independent bookstore is missing from OpenStreetMap, please add it to OSM. Please include the site link (URL) so that access to the menu of any nearby restaurant will be just a few clicks away.
  • Wambacher always keeps his OSM software list up to date with the latest releases. He has received further suggestions for OSM-using software to add to his list from the forum. (de) (automatic translation)

Did you know …

  • [1] …this methodology aimed at improving the completeness, precision and consistency of the major road network? This work was recently presented at SotM-Fr 2019. It measures OSM data against open data references like gROADS to assess the quality and quantity and to find areas which need improvement through Tasking Manager projects and prioritization uMap tasks. The developers are asking for contributions to this project, started in 2015 and currently covering nine African countries. A specific Directed Editing sub-page has been created in the OSM wiki.
  • …that the Russian mapper Rainbow Fox wrote (translation) WhereIsMyPhoto which simplifies searching through collections of photos? When the image has geodata the shooting location is shown on the OSM basemap.
  • OpenAndroMaps? The website offers downloads of different styled vector maps for smartphones. The styles are regularly updated and improved. As a user please note the Elevate 4 update.
  • On the website Wo ist Markt? you can see the weekly markets, vegetable markets and flea markets of different cities in Germany. Besides an information page (de) (automatic translation) you can find further details on the GitHub Repo page.
  • … the ghost town of Kitsault in Canada, with a single inhabitant? The mining settlement was abandoned in 1983, but the houses, land, hospital and shops have since been maintained by an investor using a few local people to prepare for a future generation of miners. An 18-month old article in Stern (automatic translation) provides more background, and a short film about it. (It remains to consider whether the tagging with place=city is correct.)

Other “geo” things

  • The reporting platform RADar! uses OpenStreetMap and is an online citizen participation and planning tool of Climate Alliance. The RADar! app or the Internet can be used to draw attention to disturbing and dangerous spots along the cycle path. The messages can be viewed on the website and are often well suited for updating the current state of cycle paths in OSM 😉
  • Michael Marz has started (de) (automatic translation) a personal project which offers all primary map features (distinct keys) in their own separate downloadable package. Further information can be found at the GitHub page.
  • The Japan Times reported that Benin is now proud to have a modern digital map to replace the last map from 1957. A lot of work was needed, carried out by 30 Beninese cartographers. The project was initiated by the United Nations (UNDP) with financial support from the European Union.
  • Saadiq Mohiuddin described how he created a map of curb parking rules in Calgary.
  • Is there an OSM key on your keyboard? The keyboard of user ImreSamu has one.
  • Be careful when working with data, a slight misalignment of coordinates meant a property developer qualified for tax cuts for the poor.
  • To avoid traffic congestion, Google diverted almost 100 cars in Colorado onto an unpaved dirt road where they got stuck.
  • The Wikimedia Foundation has blocked a long-time administrator of the English Wikipedia for a year because due to a code-of-conduct violation, without giving details. The community is appealing against the lack of transparency and the circumvention of typical decision paths. Individual admins have delivered a user-block edit war with the Foundation. BuzzFeed News reports about it. The June issue of The Signpost, an internal monthly magazine of the English Wikipedia, has several articles on the subject.
