Mapping

  • Dabohamda announced in a tweet (fr) the creation of the first bus line in Conakry following a field survey. OpenStreetMap Guinea will complete the bus network in the coming days. (automatic translation)
  • Satoshi Iida (User nyampire) announced last week on Twitter(1, 2) (ja) about fresh aerial imagery for Japan. OSM now has permission to use aerial imagery published as open data from Nerima-ku (specified districts in Tokyo Metropolis) and Fukaya city. He created map tiles and explains how to use them on the wiki Nerima-ku (ja) (automatic translation) and Fukaya (ja) (automatic translation). The imagery is of very high resolution, which will help us to enrich OSM.
  • Martin Koppenhoefer asks on the mailing list whether the decision of the Data Working Group regarding the Crimean peninsula should be changed. Russia has been in control of the area for four years and changes are not expected.
  • Frederik Ramm of the DWG warns on the Talk-de (de) (automatic translation) mailing list and in the German forum (de) (automatic translation) that users who continue to participate in verbal fights in changeset comments of new users against or for ‘gluing’ landuse areas to other features will be temporarily blocked from editing. He also started a discussion (de) (automatic translation) about this topic to try and resolve one of the oldest contentious issues in OSM, i.e. the gluing of linear features to area features. Mappers pro gluing don’t want to leave blank artefacts in between when rendering at high zoom levels; mappers against find it is extremely time consuming to do further editing when glued together.
  • Researchers at Cardiff University have used OSM data to develop a novel method for finding the safest routes for pedestrians. Their work is to be published in the journal Accident Analysis & Prevention.
  • Joseph Eisenberg suggests bringing some order to the tagging of hot springs and geysers. The current tagging goes back to a proposal from 2008 that was never approved.
  • Gregory Marler presents the 360° cameras which are available for hire from OSM UK for its members in an unboxing video on YouTube.
  • With a mail to the tagging list, Allan Mustard draws attention to the proposal about distinguishing embassies from consulates. The aim of the proposal is to bring structure to the current set of informal tagging rules, to let OSM reflect international law.

Community

  • The user Adrian O´Connor shares a tweet about the launch of OpenStreetMap Ireland at Maynooth University. Ciarán Staunton (aka DeBigC) reports the founding of OpenStreetMap Ireland, which aims to become the local chapter of the OSMF in Ireland.
  • Simon Poole has submitted a pull request that will add links to new OSM Terms of Use in the Welcome box and on the About page.

Imports

  • An import of natural monument trees in the Italian region Friuli Venezia Giulia is planned. Giovanni has created a wiki site and is looking for help.
  • Leif Rasmussen announced a ready-to-go import for missing buildings and address data in Miami-Dade County.
  • An import of electric charging station for cars in Norway, Sweden and Finland is currently in preparation. As outlined in the wiki page, electric charging stations are quite important in Scandinavia as nearly 50% of all cars sold are electric cars or plug-in hybrids.
  • While most imports are carefully prepared, documented and discussed, some aren’t. As reported on the Canadian mailing list, a mapper added administrative boundaries in a questionable way and ignored comments from community members.

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • The draft meeting minutes for the License Working Group meeting of October 11th were published.
  • The meeting minutes of the recent OSMF Board have been published.

Events

  • Opensaar e.V., a German FOSS organisation, will host a meet&talk on November 15th at Saarbrücken in Germany. In addition to talks about OGC standards, Mapserver, Postgis and QGIS, Guillaume Rischard (OSM: Stereo) will talk about the experience with open geodata in Luxembourg.

Humanitarian OSM

  • The OSM GeoWeek will take place between November 11-17th. OSM GeoWeek is a celebration of geography and map making with OpenStreetMap. Last year there were 230 events in 48 countries. The homepage of the OSM GeoWeek helps you to find or register an event.
  • HOT endorsed the Principles for Digital Development, which comprise nine guidelines designed to help digital development practitioners integrate established best practices into technology-enabled programs.

Maps

  • The association “Atvirasis žemėlapis” (The Open Map) together with SpatialForces released a topographical vector map of Lithuania. The map combines OSM data, the SwissTopo style with some minor adjustments and LiDAR based dynamic high resolution hillshading. Further details are described in a blogpost.
  • XCTrails Map provides a dedicated map for climbing routes fully based on OSM data.

Software

  • OsmAnd seems (de) (automatic translation) to partially meet the needs of firefighters, but favourites with links to PDFs (e.g. floor plans) would be very helpful. A user is looking for help in the German OSM forum.

Programming

  • Coder superDoss provided a pull request for iD, that enables it to read and display data in shapefile format.

Releases

  • Daniel Koć announced the release of OpenStreetMap Carto 4.16.0, that brings a bunch of new icons and renderings. There have been a few comments on why ATMs and post boxes are now rendered only at zoom level 19+, and the discussion on the list indicates that it was not a simple decision.
  • Please check the OSM Software Watchlist of Wambacher for the latest releases of all OSM software.

Did you know …

  • … about the possibility to use (de) (automatic translation) mailing lists as a forum?

Other “geo” things

  • A visualisation of rivers in the US based on their average annual flow has been posted on reddit.com/r/MapPorn.
  • The blog on singletracks.com, a site dedicated to mountain biking, has published a test of the outdoor GPS Wahoo Elemnt, that uses OSM maps.
  • The website geospatialworld.com published an article about the increasing importance of satellite imagery for journalism. Aerial views have become indispensable for journalists who want to double check the location of a scene, document deforestation, illustrate devastation of urban areas in recent conflicts and many other purposes.
  • The World Food Programme posted an update about the situation in Nepal. The region suffers from extreme food shortage on a large scale. An OpenStreetMap-based pilot project on trail and infrastructure mapping in the Jumla district concluded in September.

Mapping

  • Jochen Topf introduced a new QA tool called Osmoscope. He wants to avoid the drawback of current QA tools, which is that the person who operates the tool decides which layers are shown. With Osmoscope running on a web server, a user can add QA layers by entering the configuration i.e. a URL that points to a description of a new layer. In other words you create a GeoJSON with possible OSM issues and add it to Osmoscope which takes then care of visualisation. If your GeoJSON contains thousands of potential issues, you should think about using vector tiles. A proof-of-concept implementation is available at osmoscope.jochentopf.com. Issues can be reported on GitHub.
  • Joseph Eisenberg wants to render radio telescopes but noticed that what he considers the “possible tagging mistake” man_made=radio_telecope is used over 200 times while the “correct tag combination” man_made=telescope with telescope:type=radio is only used twice as much.
  • Bren Barnes is asking for suggestions for his proposal to introduce amenity=research_station.
  • The new tag telecom=* was accepted and now enables mappers to add last-mile networks and related equipment like DSLAMs.
  • In Belgium the law was changed to add “School streets” (nl) (automatic translation). These are streets adjacent to the entrance of a school that are shut off from all traffic except for pedestrians and bicycles around the times the schoolday starts and ends.

Community

  • User marc marc started a lengthy discussion on the tagging mailing list by pointing to the topic that crossing=zebra, which is assumed to be a shortcut for crossing=uncontrolled + crossing_ref=zebra, prevents mappers from adding crossing=traffic_signals for crossing with zebra and traffic signals.
However, a much bigger tagging problem became apparent during this discussion: The maintainer of the OSM editor iD adds or removes tagging presets he is “tired of hearing people complain about”. Keeping in mind that one can control the way people edit if one controls the presets in an editor that accounts for roughly 50% of all uploaded changesets, the change of a preset should not be controlled by one or a few developers.
  • Michael Spreng introduced (de) (automatic translation) the new design for the Swiss OSM website. There is still some work to do, such as translations, but it already looks promising.
  • Melanie Eckle announced that HeiGIT/GIScience (de) from the University of Heidelberg and German Red Cross signed a Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen their strategic partnership to conduct joint activities related to research as well as development of GIS technologies, skills, workflows and communities.
  • User cbeddow has started OpenStreetMap Montana, and is seeking mappers from all parts of the state to join and plan local meetup events.
  • The Mapper of the Month October 2018 as chosen by OpenStreetMap Belgium is Aylin Kızılaslan from Turkey.
  • The Wikimedia Foundation has started the call for proposals for the wishlist 2019. WMF is open for ‘feature requests’ from the OSM community.
  • An interesting chart labelled ‘Community OSM’ was drawn by Simon B. Johnson during the GeOnG conference as reported in a tweet by Paul Uithol. Common mappers, who go out surveying rather than tracing aerial images, might have difficulties finding themselves in the chart.

Imports

  • Pieter Vander Vennet announces on the imports mailing list that the Belgian community plans to integrate building footprints from multiple Belgian governmental sources into OSM. The plan is to include external IDs in the import, which received loud criticism as well as support. As it’s more of a slow integration effort, rather than a bulk one-time import, which depends on said external IDs to work efficiently, the plan is to still include them.

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • OpenStreetMap Belgium, the newest local chapter in the OSM family, introduces itself in a blog post.
  • OSM’s local chapter in the UK responded to the Geospatial Commission’s call for evidence. OSM UK supports the efforts to use public and private sector geospatial data more productively. They believe that OSM plays an important role in that area. The whole response is linked to at the end of the blog post.

Events

  • Chetan Gowda announced that the SotM Asia will take place in Bengaluru (a.k.a. Bangalore), India on November 17-18. Don’t forget to register!
  • The community day at the FOSS4G SotM Oceania 2018 will be on Friday, 23rd November. The programme for the day was just announced.
  • Registration for FOSS4G Oceania (20–23 November 2018, Melbourne) is open.
  • Geofabrik usually organises two or three hack-weekends each year in their own offices. Christine Karch tells us in a blog post (de) (automatic translation) that the most recent event had to switch to a larger location at Karlsruhe University, as 9 people joined to plan the next SotM in Heidelberg, plus 7 JOSM developers seized the opportunity to meet face to face and discuss long-standing issues.
  • As part of the non-profit project openminds.at, the Austrian Open Source Award (de) (automatic translation) will be presented for the second time on November 9. An Open Source Ball will take place afterwards.
  • OSMF’s new Belgian local chapter is planning their first official meeting during the week of November 13th.

Humanitarian OSM

  • The United Nations Population Fund reports how Crowd2Map Tanzania is using OpenStreetMap to fill gaps on maps in rural Tanzania to end Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).
  • A short summing-up shows HOT’s preliminary conclusion after 3 weeks of its Hacktoberfest. HOT thanks everyone who has worked on issues related to usability and experience of the Open Source tools, performance, and general bug fixes.
  • There are several Missing Maps events around the globe during November where you may want to participate.

Maps

  • Gastronomy objects will no longer be displayed by small icons in zoom level 17 but by orange dots as they often created a visual clutter.

switch2OSM

  • Recreation.gov combines campsites and facilities from 12 US federal government bureaus, allowing users to search and make reservations. Until recently, search results were displayed on a Google map, but the new website includes a makeover with OpenStreetMap and Mapbox as the basemap.

Software

  • We have reported before rescues of hikers occasioned by the use of OSM without evaluating the terrain by other means, such as topo maps. Now, according to CBC Canada, a hiker had to be rescued by helicopter from the top of a cliff in British Columbia. Allegedly the hiker was benighted because they relied on Maps.me for an estimate of how long it would take to walk in the mountainous terrain. An issue was reported in 2017, but it is not entirely clear if the situation still exists with the current version.
  • The world’s most visited cemetery is Père Lachaise in Paris. Super Lachaise, an iOS app, allows you to easily find historical monuments and prominent graves.

Programming

  • Rémy Mathieu wrote a blog post titled Rendering a map using Go, Mapbox and OpenStreetMap where he explains how to retrieve and draw map data. He plans to write another article as he aims to finally render fantasy styled maps.

Releases

  • JOSM release 14382, version 18.10 is out. The enhancements include a new option to show the object version in lists, an increased default overpass wizard timeout, the cut of overlapping GPX layers when merging, the MapCSS function is_similar and many minor improvements.
  • QGIS 3.4, the first long-term release of version 3, has just been published. New expression functions and code completion for the expression builder have been added to this version.

Did you know …

  • netidee is the largest Open Source Internet promotion in Austria. netidee stands for openness, transparency, and sharing. The results of all funded projects are available to the public for use and further development (“open source principle”).

Other “geo” things

  • [1] Mapping London wrote an article about a map that shows the modelled 2020 annual pollution levels of NO2 based on data from the London Atmospheric Emissions Inventory 2013 (LAEI). The map was created using Mapbox’s 3D WebGL libraries and is client-side rendered.
  • Garmin continues its famous GPSmap series with the Garmin GPSmap 66s. The German biking website gpsradler.de has published (de) (automatic translation) a test of the new GPS handset.
  • The map for historical items at gk.historic.place is now linking to the US National Register of Historic Places (NRHP).

OSM SK

  • Mapa v areálu sportovního centra x-bionic sphere v Šamoríně, je to freemap.sk nebo ne?.
  • Je možné v leafletu jako vrstvu použít TMS freemap.sk? A s jakými parametry?
  • WeeklyOSM CZ inspiruje k podzimním výletům do přírody!

  • Nová verze KAPOR pluginu pro JOSM verze #14385.
  • Rozhovor z předsedou Slovenského cykloklubu Michalem Hlatkým a přístup veřejnosti do registru cyklotras.

  • Leif Rasmussen navrhuje přidání dat z jízdních řádů do OSM dle tohoto schématu.

Komunita

  • Opencagedata.com nabízí rozhovor s Russem Garrettem z OpenInfraMap.org.

  • Třetí česká konference State of the Map se bude konat 17. a 18. listopadu v Brně.

Humanitární OSM

  • Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Erasmus+ Students oznámili na Twitteru, že pořádali dvoutýdenní kurz nazvaný Učení s učiteli. Tento program má široké zaměření a témata zahrnují mapování, Overpass, OSM Wiki, komunikační kanály a další, například témata související s Wikimedií. Program zdůraznil možnosti OSM v rámci podpory humanitárních reakcí a ekonomického rozvoje a průkopnictví vůdců (kteří jsou dobrovolníky).
  • HOT potřebuje během dalších týdnů vaši pomoc s identifikací počtu uprchlíků z Venezuely aktuálně přítomných na ostrově Aruba.
  • Humanitární OpenStreetMap tým dokončil mapování klíčové infrastruktury, převážně obrysů budov, silniční sítě a vodních cest v Semarangu, pátém největším městě Indonézie.

Mapy

Uživatel Stereo (Guillaume Rischard) napsal ve svém deníku o své cestě do Kosova, setkání s lokální OSM komunitou a jednání s radnicí Prištiny o použití OpenStreetMap.

Otevřená data

  • OpenGeoHub oznámil první vydání LandGIS, webového mapovacího systému podobnému OSM obsahující enviromentální data s prostorovým rozlišením od 250m do 1km. Datové sady zahrnují reliéf, geologii, půdní pokryv, využití půdy, vegetaci, indikátory degradace půdy, vlastnosti půdy, třídy půdy a potenciální přírodní vegetaci a jsou kontrolována v otevřeném procesu.

Mapping

  • Gregory Marler made a Youtube tutorial showing how he is using his own 360 degree images from Mapillary for editing with JOSM.
  • It looks as if the mapping done by Grab (the Uber of South-East Asia) does cause major problems. Quote from Russ McD “…what we are seeing is another major organisation, allowing a bunch of amateurs loose on a training ground they call OSM. They are all being paid, while us volunteers, mop up the mess.” But read it for yourself.
  • We recently reported that Telenav has open-sourced the machine learning based street sign detection and the resulting training data that recognises nearly 100 sign types. Telenav makes use of it with its OpenStreetCam platform, a service very similar to Mapillary. The OpenStreetCam JOSM plugin visualises detections in the latest version. Martijn van Exel describes a Power Validator Workflow, that enables you to validate entire trips with many detected signs very quickly on the OpenStreetCam website.
  • The question as to whether Aruba, Curaçao and Bonaire should be labeled as independent country or as part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands was discussed in the forum. The thread gives some insight into different levels of independence of territories belonging still more or less to a kingdom

Community

  • For the past two weeks, the French community has been working (automatic translation) on the completeness of coverage of police stations and gendarmerie brigades (regional police) in France. This project was launched following the recent availability of good quality open data of gendarmerie reception points and their opening hours. The particularity of this update was that each gendarmerie is referenced by a unique key facilitating subsequent updates (address, phone, opening_hours). This project will also clarify the amenity=police without names and identify municipal police. It also involved working on the documentation in the wiki. Collaboration is ongoing with the National Gendarmerie Digital Mission.
  • [1] Arun Ganesh tweeted a teaser for the upcoming SOTM Asia on November 17 – 18, 2018 in Bangalore, India with a series of beautiful visualisations of 10 years OSM in India.
  • The download service from Geofabrik has a lot of users and Frederik Ramm, who operates it, is always trying to minimise traffic by offering data extracts as large as required but also as small as possible. One of the largest extracts for which no subdivision exists, is California. The question how California could be divided extract-wise revealed that Californian’s sensitivities play the most important role.
  • User Nop announced (de) (automatic translation) an update of his Editor Statistic in the OSM Wiki.
  • Five years after typhoon Haiyan hit the Philippines, user seav recounts the OSM related help in his user diary. Read how the typhoon has transformed OSM and its community in the Philippines.
  • The OpenStreetMap Foundation of Colombia has implemented OSM tools in Spanish (especially for Latin America and Colombia), such as the Tasking Manager and Umap and developed other tools that are hosted in a high availability data centre in Germany. A fundraising campaign asks for your help to sustain this infrastructure for at least two more years.
  • The World Bank features an article about OSM and the rise of the local mapping communities. The blog post highlights the participatory mapping in Asia and Africa, something that a regular reader of WeeklyOSM may already be aware of, given the increasing number of such projects we have mentioned, as well as the fact that developers from Silicon Valley, African city planners and even humanitarian workers all work together around our OSM project.
  • tyr_asd used his OSM user diary to express his appreciation to the OSM community in Graz, Geofabrik and the Disastermappers Heidelberg.

Imports

  • Jeff Underwood, from Facebook, posted comprehensive documentation titled So how does Facebook’s AI Assisted Road Import Process work? about their machine learning based data generation for OSM in the user diaries. Facebook is currently uploading data for Thailand and partners with HOT in Indonesia.

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • Tobias Knerr (OSM Tordanik) announced (de) that he will stand as a candidate for the upcoming OSMF board election.

Events

Humanitarian OSM

  • MapAction, a humanitarian mapping organisation, published a report about the help that three volunteers and two staff members have provided in Malawi after the severe flood in January 2015.
  • On 28 November, a Missing Maps Mapathon will take place (automatic translation) in Grenoble from 18:00 to 21:00.

Education

  • The Volksfreund from Trier reports (automatic translation) about the start of an EU funded Erasmus+ project where teachers from five countries met in Saarburg, Germany, for an extensive OSM training. In particular, the article highlights a live link to Severin Menard, who reports on his experiences in Africa. The whole project will run for two years with the aim of inspiring many pupils in the participating European countries to take part in “humanitarian mapping”.

Open Data

  • The UK Geospatial Commission will announce a GBP 1.5 million competition for crowdsourced data on 26th November. The amount is approximately the same as OSM’s total running costs for its entire 14 year existence.
  • The Heidelberg Institute for Geoinformation Technology (HeiGIT) has published the new openelevationservice on GitHub, a Flask application which extracts elevation from various datasets for Point or LineString 2D geometries and returns 3D geometries in various formats.
  • SmugMug, the new owners of Flickr, announced major changes to the Ts&Cs for free Flickr accounts. A maximum of 1000 photos will be retained for these accounts which may affect OSM contributors and bloggers who have used Flickr for photos and other images.

Software

  • OSMCha received important updates. Now OSMCha is compliant with the GDPR legislation and it has a new way to receive flagged OSM features. Wille published two blog posts about this new release.
  • Tessio Novack and colleagues at Heidelberg University published an open access paper about generating customized pleasant pedestrian routes based on OpenStreetMap data and Openrouteservice. They present and evaluate how factors such as greenness, sociability, and quietness are extracted from OSM and used to adapt routes.

Programming

  • A “GDAL Coordinate System Barn Raising” has raised $144,000 to enable improvements to coordinate system libraries needed for the GDAL, PROJ, libgeotiff, PostGIS, and Spatialite open source toolchain.
The new libraries provide for higher accuracy transformations between coordinate systems that avoid transforming everything through WGS84 and eliminate the extra steps that this entails.
  • Andy Allan, a long time OSM contributor, blogged about Moderation, Authorisation and Background Task Improvements for OpenStreetMap. He gives a summary of the recent OSM codebase developments, including the help from the Ruby for Good team which contributed many improvements to OSM during their annual development event.
  • In his blog Christoph Hormann explains (automatic translation) how to deal with Mapnik’s broken support for SVG area patterns, i.e. the representation of areas such as forests and meadows. He developed a script that can easily change the format, PNG or SVG, to get the appropriate format, i.e. SVG for printing and PNG for online maps.
  • Neat: the new interactive Openrouteservice API documentation built on top of vue.js welcomes its new LeafletJS map component. Develop and test your requests made really easy:
    1. build your request graphically
    2. call the service
    3. visualize it on the map and finally…
    4. download it.
  • Christoph Hormann shares his German presentation with us on open map projects of the OSM community that he has used for his speech at the German Society of Cartography and Geomatics.

Releases

  • The German website mobilesicher.de reports (de) (automatic translation) that the OSM based navigation app Magic Earth has removed the ties to Google, Facebook and Twitter from the app and is not sharing user data any more.

Did you know …

  • Anonymaps points out a Mapbox tweet about Porsche, that is using OSM based navigation from Mapbox although it owns a small indirect stake in HERE. We would like to point out that the ownership percentage stated by Anonymaps is wrong.
  • … the curated list of OSM related software?
  • osmoscope by Jochen Topf to fix bugs in OSM? You tried and Osmoscope doesn’t give the data to JOSM? This is probably because your browser does not have a certificate for the JOSM address or you haven’t enabled remote control. Try to access https://127.0.0.1:8112/version in your browser, with JOSM running locally. A certificate error may occur, if so you can enter an exception for it and from there on you should be able to fix many errors in the OSM database. 😉

OSM in the media

Other “geo” things

  • A blog post from Heidelberg University’s GIScience group revisits Wheelmap and the usage of crowdsourced geographic information for improving accessibility.
  • Mapillary launches an open-source software development kit
  • In Germany there is the first cycle path (automatic translation) consisting of solar modules. The start-up company, Solmare, developed a 90m long test track with low voltage modules and installed this in Erftstadt/NRW. The company sees this development as a very successful future technology. The tagging of the cycle path was suggested with surface=solar_panel. There are further solar cycle paths e.g. in the Netherlands (automatic translation) (still without tagging…).

SotM Asia 2018 group photo

State of the Map Asia 2018 brought together the mapping enthusiasts from around 12 countries across the globe. It was two days of interesting sessions and workshops. Find more information on the website and event tweets on this hashtag: #SotMAsia18.

Mapping

  • Dave Swarthout wrote on the tagging mailing list that he just learnt about the power of multipolygon relations. He was applying his new knowledge by mapping bays in Alaska. However, he discovered the disadvantages of mapping very large structures, in his case the Cook Inlet that stretches over 290 km. He asked whether it would be easier to draw a simple shape rather than using a relation with dozens of member ways. However, the following lengthy discussion also brought a simple place node into play and focused on many other problems, mainly rendering. In the end the whole discussion did not result in solving the problem Dave brought up.
  • How to deal with multilingual names is a common question in OSM and there has been a lot of previous discussion about how best to deal with them. Here’s a discussion (de) (automatic translation) about bilingual “city limit” traffic signs in Austria from the Austrian mailing list last week.
  • Simon Poole estimates that half of all addresses in Switzerland have been mapped in OSM already.
  • According to a blog post from Anton Khorev the different floor numbering traditions from country to country make it difficult to understand values in level=. In his comprehensive post, he explains the issue and why it is not as easy to solve as it might appear.
  • The voting for office=diplomatic (formerly Consulate) is underway. It intends to distinguish between diplomatic, consular and other types of government-to-government liaison offices. The proposal was prepared by an expert in this area, an ambassador.
  • Jukka Nikulainen has brought his proposal for mapping tram tracks on highways to voting. Tram tracks are usually mapped on separate OSM ways, even when they are embedded in the highways. For cyclists this presents a danger, so it’s interesting to know where this is the case, so such streets can be avoided for bicycle routing.
  • François Lacombe is asking for comments on his proposal for additional attributes on pipeline and waterway valves.
  • Joseph Eisenberg is seeking advice on how to tag Neighborhood Gateway Signs as they exist in Indonesia and other parts of the globe like Portland and San Diego.

Community

  • Pascal Neis, since October 2018 Professor for Geo-Government at Mainz University of Applied Sciences, made the average number of OSM contributors per country of the twelve-month rolling period available for download as a csv file. According to his tweet, this is the data he is using for osmstats.neis-one.org.
  • The Czech OSM community informs us about the establishment of the organisation OpenStreetMap Česká republika z.s.. The organisation has 14 founding members and will apply to become a local OSMF chapter once fully operational. Tomáš Kašpárek, Marián Kyral and Jakub Těšínský were elected as members of the first board.
  • Jakob Miksch prepared an appealing description of OSM, covering the data model, tags, editing, visualisation and the licence, on his blog. Interesting for beginners!
  • From 5th till 9th of November OSM and GIS training sessions were held for International Humanitarian Organisations in Mali. They were organized at OCHA building by OpenStreetMap Mali community with the support from Francophony international volunteers in Mali.
  • OSM Diaries published a short YouTube video about Gregory Marler’s OSM editing history. In the video he compares editing OSM ten years ago with now.
  • OpenStreetMap Benin – with the support of its International Volunteer of La Francophonieorganised a 3-day workshop on OpenStreetMap digital mapping for young women from various socio-professional backgrounds. The training took place at the Francophone Digital Campus in Cotonou.

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • Rob Nickerson asked the OSMF representation about the status of the Fee Waiver Program, which was decided in 2014 with target date for implementing it by the end of that same year.
  • Paul Normann officially announced the OSMF Fee Waiver Program on the OSMF mailing list on November 15th. The fee waiver program allows those to join who couldn’t previously due to a lack of reasonably priced money transfer options or for whom the cost is prohibitive compared to incomes in their part of the world.
  • The minutes of the Licence Working Group meeting of November 8 has been published. One of the topics was the Directive on dealing with DMCA copyright complaints.
  • The sponsorship for the server that is used to build JOSM and offers the download ends soon. The German local OSMF chapter FOSSGIS has received a request for funding (de) (automatic translation) for a new one. A new server is needed anyway as the old one has reached its limits.
  • Michael Collinson published the official set of questions to the candidates for the upcoming OSMF board elections. The seven candidates are asked to submit their answers and manifesto via email by 30 November. They will be published together.
  • Christoph Hormann describes his impressions of the OSMF board meeting on 15 November in a blog post that he titled The most surreal and memorable OSMF board meeting yet. He names the person he thinks is in charge of softening the Organised Editing Guidelines and criticises that a policy draft from an anonymous company remains locked away.
  • The Data Working Group of the OSM Foundation published its decision that the Crimean peninsula belongs to Russia – OSM border data-wise. The decision lays down rules for the (non-) use of addr:country=* as well as requirements for changeset comments in the region. This decision replaces the previous rules.

Events

  • SotM Asia happened this weekend! It was attended by around 280 participants from 12 countries around the globe for two days filled with enthusiasm, excitement, interesting sessions, panels, workshops related to using OpenStreetMap for conservation, mapping, data visualisation and everything maps. The organising team is thankful to one and all for making this event a success! The SotM Asia Twitter account gives you an idea of the presentations and talks held as well as many visual impressions. It is planned to upload the presentations on a dedicated YouTube channel, so stay tuned!
  • The FOSDEM 2019 in Brussels, a long standing free-software conference that attracts 6000+ developers, will take place on the 2nd and 3rd of February 2019. For a few years the conference has included a Geospatial devroom, which is now calling for talk proposals.
  • More than 110 people, invited by Doctors Without Borders, came (fr) (automatic translation) on Friday 16 November to the UPNA to map two crisis protected areas in Caracas and Niger by satellite imagery.

Humanitarian OSM

  • Melanie Eckle has published the minutes of the HOT board meeting of 8th November. It was the first board meeting that was open to the membership.
  • HOT is using open source tools to fight against malaria in Guatemala. In an article HOT explains how they partner with the Clinton Health Access Initiative and the Guatemala Ministry of Health. HOT added more than 1,600 buildings to OpenStreetMap in the area of Escuintla to help the coordination of indoor residual spraying.
  • On 28th November CartONG and the refugee community SINGA Grenoble invite (fr) (automatic translation) you to a special mapathon in La Coop. The mapping is done in pairs so that people with a migrant background or hardly any technical know-how can expand their knowledge together.

Maps

  • With the newest update, OpenStreetBrowser supports drawing patterns (e.g. arrow heads) on ways, which is now used on the cycle routes map and the public transport map.
The cycle routes map gets the directions from the ways’ role (forward/backward), the public transport map from the connection to the previous/next way (as defined in PT Schema v2). read more. To prepare for the Christmas season, there’s a new “Christmas features” category.

switch2OSM

  • Gmaps, claiming to be the number one map module for ExpressionEngine, changed its name using the formula Gmaps – Google = Maps. Google’s fee increase and the cuts to its free services caused a shift by the developers towards open source and the support of a couple of map providers, including OSM.

Software

  • Richard Fairhurst wrote that his bike route-planning website cycle.travel now also covers Scandinavia and parts of Eastern Europe.
  • The surveyor app StreetComplete reached 1000 stars on GitHub.

Programming

  • The GIScience HD github repository already contains over 50 open source repositories and it’s still growing. Most are somehow related to OSM, from routing, processing, managing, analysing to visualising, etc. Who wants to participate? https://github.com/GIScience
  • If you’ve always wanted the upload of edits to be faster, now’s your chance to help. The upload of changes has been completely reimplemented and testers are wanted (de)(automatic translation) to test the code with iD, Potlatch or JOSM. mmd also published instructions on how to help with testing in English, so not speaking German is no longer an excuse 😉

Releases

  • Martijn van Exel upgraded MapRoulette to version 3.1.1 on maproulette.org. In his user blog Martijn explains the new features, which include the availability of Mapillary images on MapRoulette, rebuilding tasks and a public Leaderboard for each challenge
  • Wambacher has updated his comprehensive listing of OSM related software. Most recent updates include Naviki Android 3.1810.1, OpenStreetCam Android , Traccar Server 4.2 and Vespucci 11.2.0.
  • Potlatch 2 is still alive and actively maintained. Richard Fairhurst announced two small updates.

Did you know …

  • … the service Shareloc that allows you to create and share OpenLayers maps?
  • … the German city Schnöggersburg? The city, which is used as a training ground for armed forces, was featured by a news magazine (de) (automatic translation) in 2012. A mapper “rediscovered” the city which sparked a new discussion (de) (automatic translation) in the German forum about tagging and mapping of military installations.

Other “geo” things

  • Doug Rinckes launched a Plus code grid service on grid.plus.codes. The Plus code system, or the Open Location Code as it is officially called, was originally developed by Google. The system is seen as controversial in OSM and has caused heated discussions on GitHub, the mailing list and other places.
  • The New York Times published an article titled A Map of Every Building in America that provides different perspectives on the development of settlements in the USA and the arrangement of buildings in that context. The article discusses maps at different scales, from a nationwide figure-ground diagram to a map of the squiggly suburbs in Mesa, Arizona. A behind-the-scenes article in the New York Times covers the story of how the maps were drawn using the building footprints that Microsoft released this year (and are available for use in OSM as well).
  • The biking website road.cc has tested the bar-mounted GPS Hammerhead Karoo. In the article the author, Dave Atkinson, explains why the device is the best available GPS for its purpose, nevertheless he thinks there is still room for improvement.

Mapping

  • John Whelan shares his view about the project Building Canada 2020 and how to proceed with mapping buildings. The release of government data and the expectation that Microsoft will release building footprints as they did for the US makes him conclude that the addition of metadata might be better than having inexperienced mappers tracing buildings using iD.
  • A proposal (de) (automatic translation) has emerged from the discussion in the German forum about rules for the use of relations with type=multipolygon. The intention of the proposal is, simply said, the avoidance of multipolygon relations if the geometry can be mapped with a single way representing the area, i.e. no inner areas and less than 2000 nodes for the area’s outer way. The topic is currently being discussed on the German forum (de) (automatic translation ) and German mailing list (de) (automatic translation) and is intended to be a guide to best practice for Germany initially.
  • The voting on the tagging proposal boundary=aboriginal_lands for the official territories of indigenous groups has started eight years after its drafting and is open until 8th December 2018. Alan McConchie created a GitHub issue for the OSM Carto map style as well and proposes a rendering with a brown outline colour.
  • Warin felt that the Wiki for antennas needed some rework to allow a better specification of the antenna type. As he is confused by the values of the key antenna:type in the German part of the wiki and he also does not favour that particular key, he is looking for alternative options.

Community

  • InfosReseaux wrote a post on his OSM diary about the mapping of infrastructure like power networks.
The article describes how infrastructure knowledge is changing from proprietary to open knowledge with OSM and how infrastructure mapping makes OSM better.
  • If you have recently used Pascal Neis’ How Did You Contribute website, you may have noticed a new section called Recently utilized presets – Top 3. In a blog post Pascal explains that it is intended as a new quality indicator.

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • The recent DWG decision on the Crimean peninsula has provoked many discussions:

    • a summary in Russian language in Zverik’s OSM-Blog (ru) (automatic translation)
    • A discussion in the Ukrainian OSM-Forum (partly English, partly Ukrainian) (automatic translation)
    • A discussion on the talk mailing list started by a post criticising the decision.
    • Several OSM diary entries by Ukrainian mappers objecting to the decision including this one and this one by Kilkenni (with many comments, including some objecting to the ad-hominem attacks it contains).
    • Over on reddit
    • Multiple people have suggested how to map disputed and claimed territories on the Talk and Tagging (1, 2) mailing lists. (proposal by johnparis, proposal by Rory). It was also discussed whether it made sense to store such claims in OSM at all.
    • Someone has sent a formal complaint to the OSMF board of directors.
  • The OSMF board informed the members that it has declined a request to reject the membership application requests related to a "mass sign-up of 100 new accounts on 15 Nov 2018 from India, most coming from one single IP address from a company ‘well known’ to OpenStreetMap". The new members are not eligible to vote this year. However, the decision was followed by a long discussion on the mailing list.
  • Joost Schouppe, candidate for this year’s OSMF board election, analysed the OSMF membership per country in total and relative to the numbers of contributors.
  • The minutes of the Data Working Group meetings of 10 July, 13 September and 15 November have been published in the foundation’s "working group minutes" area.

Humanitarian OSM

  • The Erasmus + European Youth Humanitarian OpenStreetMap (euYoutH_OSM) Students announced in a tweet that on November 23th, some ESJEA teachers began their training in OpenStreetMap in a session guided by teachers Nuno Azevedo and Elizabete Oliveira. Teachers worked with JOSM putting Terceira Island more and more on the map. euYoutH_OSM announced on November 26th, the Sports Technician course had the opportunity to receive training in JOSM. The graduates of this course have learned how to design buildings, properties and to label structures yet to be mapped.
  • HOT and Kathmandu Living Labs will cooperate with the mapping of Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal. KLL will map buildings remotely before information will be gathered on the ground to complete the assessment. The results will be used to validate the data sets for Nepal that show the exposure of a region to natural hazards.
  • Three data science students are asking for "validated regions" for a machine learning project. The plan is to download a dataset to train and test automated mapping models using the satellite images.

Education

  • The Data Wrangling part of Udacity’s Data Analyst course uses Openstreetmap as a project. Students are introduced to OSM and the data model and have to export, filter and analyze a large area from OSM.

Maps

  • Ingress agent Hinata Kino published (ja) a real-life locations map for the ingress anime. He mapped (ja) the place where the event happened with anime using a map based on OSM.
  • Wikipedia user Triglav wrote (ja) about a way to embed OSM on wikipedia pages. You can combine OSM relations with Wikidata and highlight it with Wikipedia.

Software

  • Cadcorp, a British provider of GIS services, to local authorities in particular, have updated their software and now it includes an OSM layer.
  • An alpha version of Atlasr, an open-source map browser, has been released. Atlasr consists of modules like a map data database, a map renderer, a tile server, a geocoder and routing. It aims to offer a smooth, fast, reliable, pretty, and open source alternative to GoogleMaps, based on open data,. The software is available on GitHub.

Programming

  • Matthias(OSM username !i!) experimented with speech recognition and connected it to JOSM – speech2josm. The prototype is written in Python. Matthias wants to find someone who can create this as a new JOSM plugin. He writes more in his blog post. (de) (automatic translation)

  • The website The Better India is proposing its readers pick up a new hobby: OSM. The short article covers some basics about OSM, what OSM can do for the civil society and mentions the recent State of the Map in India.

Other “geo” things

  • The Open Data Institute (ODI) calls on the government to break the dominance of commercial online giants of the UK’s geospatial data by moving the business model of public bodies more towards open data and thinking about mandating access to the geospatial data of private companies. A broad, public debate should discuss the role of public and private organisations in the context of geospatial data.
  • Municipal Dreams tweets a photo of an old map of London’s main sewage system.
  • The German state Baden-Württemberg has released many 3D models of historic castles, palaces and monasteries under a proprietary license. The repository Sketchfab holds a directory for the, so far non-downloadable, 3D models. The only other disadvantage is that Neuschwanstein Castle is in Bavaria.
  • Paul Ramsey blogged about the response by an ESRI sales representative when Paul spoke to a local GIS user group about the risks of being tied to a single software vendor. (via @anonymaps)

– 24. února. Termín pro návrhy je do 13. prosince.

Humanitární OSM

  • OpenGovHub hostoval 4. prosince mapathon v OpenGov Hub ve Washington, DC.
  • HOT poskytl aktuální stav svého programu “Mikrogranty pro rok 2018” spuštěného v dubnu. Mikrogranty obdrželo osm komunit s cílem zlepšit OSM a minimalizovat dopady přírodních katastrof.

Mapy

  • OpenStreetBrowser má novou podkategorii v kategorii “Zábava, sport a nakupování”.

Web Bluewin.ch poskytuje (de) (automatický překlad) některé informace o provedení a testuje, zda mapa funguje. Bohužel mapa pokrývá jen Švýcarsko.

Pierre Béland appeals for experienced mappers to help improve data quality 1 | © OpenStreetMap contributors

Mapping

  • Jean-Louis Zimmerman tweets about the need to consider new approaches to editing OpenStreetMap data, both to help non-mappers and to handle increased data density. He is particularly inspired by Deriviste, a proof-of-concept created by Richard Fairhurst.
  • OSM-DRC continues its mapping in the DR Congo to help combat the Ebola outbreak in North Kivu. On twitter Pierre Béland appeals for experienced mappers to help improve data quality.
  • Toutelatitudes tweets about the three remarkable trees they’ve added to OpenStreetMap in the department of Loiret, France.
  • dktue would like to propose the tag emergency=control_centre for the place where emergency calls are responded. The tag is already used over 200 times, but only in Germany.
  • John Paris announced the fourth version of a proposal on how to map disputed boundaries. Delimitation of disputed boundaries is an important but difficult and sensitive issue for many reasons. After John received feedback for his proposal, he wrote that he will rework it and incorporate the suggestions.
  • Have you ever run into the problem of mapping a hiking trail & needing to check if any part was mapped before? Many communities use wiki pages to provide lists of trails and their relations. User Cascafico describes, in his diary, tools to automate collection of data from OSM and transformation to wiki format.

Community

  • The OpenStreetMap Niger community organized a training camp (fr) at Campus Numérique Francophone in Niamey for 15 participants. Over 3 days the subjects studied included OSM, QGIS, and open-data.
  • Jennings Anderson wrote, on his user blog, about a data analysis workshop he and Seth Fitzsimmons ran at SotM US 2018. Jupyter notebooks were used for speedy, interactive analysis and visualisation of the OSM data. In the article, he explains preparation of datasets using osm-wayback and osmesa, the creation of CSV-files and loading the data into Jupyter.
  • After Mapbox hired the Valhalla team from Mapzen, most if not all core OSRM developers seem to have quit their job. However, there is no official statement from Mapbox as to whether they plan to maintain both projects in the future.
  • Tim Couwelier blogged about Road categorisation – OpenStreetMap versus Flemish Planning Documents, where he explains the differences between OSM and public road categorisation. He points out the public categories based on the originally intended purpose of the roads vs OSM, with its ground-truth principle, based on the actual use.

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • Nicolas Chavent describes in an email that he believes that HOT US Inc. wants to achieve gradual dominance on the board of OSMF. Severin Menard continues that two OSMF directors were previously on the board of HOT, another current OSMF director was HOT Executive Director, a candidate of the current election is employed by HOT and a candidate of the current OSMF board elections is a voting member of HOT US Inc.
  • The OSMF Board reviewed the decision of the Data Working Group to change the boundaries of Crimea on OSM and has rescinded the DWG resolution. Accordingly, Crimea is included within the borders of both Russia and Ukraine: thus returning to the mapping which has existed since 2014.As might be expected there is a certain amount of commentary on this decision: Ilya Zverik in his WhatOSM blog (automatic translation) places this controversy in an overall OSM context. Others feel that how the decision was reached and communicated did not meet stated goals of transparency. Richard Fairhurst relates this to his perception that over the years the OSMF Board has often failed to support Working Group volunteers..

Events

  • The FOSSGIS 2019 (de), the German conference around geospatial topics and OSM’s main local meetup, is just around the corner. There is already an agenda for social events (de) available.

Humanitarian OSM

  • HOT wrote how OSM data will help to determine the exposure of a region to disasters. A model will be developed based on the data collected and will improve the resilience of the cities in more than 46 countries.
  • The Democratic Republic of Congo suffers from an Ebola outbreak, rebel attacks, and population displacements. With recent imagery, OSM-DRC is active in North-Kivu and opened Tasking Manager jobs. In a mail on the HOT mailing list, Pierre Béland is recapping the work from a quality point of view and recommending steps to fix the issues and improve the quality of future mapping activities.

Maps

  • OpenStreetBrowser has been updated to version 4.2. The new version allows its users to export visible map features as JSON, GeoJSON, and XML. As the project reports on their homepage, users with own repositories on OpenStreetBrowser Dev can now load categories from git branches and the broken Twitter feed in the news bar was replaced to show news from a blog instead.
  • Qwant, an European search engine that respects your privacy, just released an alpha version of their new product Qwant Maps, a map fully based on OSM data and opensource ecosystem. For now, it mainly works in France, but the good news is that you can contribute to make it work in your home country too.

Open Data

  • The City of Zurich publishes a 3D-model of the outer shells and roof structures under a Creative Commons CC0 license.

Software

  • Martijn van Exel wrote an illustrated guide on how to get started contributing to OpenStreetCam, the free and open platform for street-level images built by Telenav.
  • Jiri Vlasak introduces the LiveJOSM project. LiveJOSM is a Debian based Linux live system with JOSM and some JOSM plugins preinstalled that can be used on events, such as mapathons.

Releases

  • The OSM editor iD received two updates recently. The mega update v2.12.0 includes a seemingly endless list of new features, improvements, and bugfixes, including the implementation of two-finger trackpad gestures for Mac users, drawing of ways with a direction like cliffs and coastlines and the possibility to resize the sidebar or hide it completely. The update to 2.12.1, one day later, includes some minor bug fixes.
  • An update for the HOT Tasking manager has been released after it received nearly 60 different commits. The improvements include new layouts for mapping tab and the task history, the support for the markdown format in the task description and contribute card and the implementation of a new function called Expert Mode that will cover more advanced mapping and validation features
  • Simon Poole released the first beta for version 12 of the Vespucci editor.
    • It features a new simple action mode, which adds a big green button to add new features, instead of the somewhat difficult to explain long click.
    • Support for Maproulette.
    • It adds an intent, which means any geo: urls can be opened directly using your an OSM app of your choosing.

Did you know …

  • … the JOSM BuildingsTools Plugin by user Upliner that contributes to OSM quality? You can draw regular rectangular or round buildings by simply pressing b and 2 or 3 mouse clicks! Precisely and quickly!
The Ctrl-Alt-B shortcut key opens a configuration panel with options to modify the form, type and more.
  • OSM Streak? OSM Streak is a gamified contest that makes you do daily small tasks for OSM and earn points for completing them. The goal is to motivate mappers to edit persistently.
  • … the list of Quality Assurance tools that can be used to improve the data in OSM?
  • … how you can successfully complete the missing addresses in your district with MAPS.ME? Here is how.

OSM in the media

  • German is known for its extra-long compound words and apparently, this applies to road names too. According to a news article (de), an investigation based on OSM data found the longest road name in Germany: Bischöflich-Geistlicher-Rat-Josef-Zinnbauer-Straße. Most common in Germany are roads named after the writers Goethe and Schiller.

Other “geo” things

  • Daniel Huffman writes about old-fashioned map making: on a typewriter.
  • Jelle van Lottum has visualised voyages by the ships of several East India companies from Europe to India and the East Indies prior to 1800. The data are from CLIWOC, digitised records of ships logs.
  • CityLab provides an overview of a new book by Christof Spieler on rapid transit systems in 47 American metropolitan regions. Needless to say, it contains lots of transit maps.
  • Martijn announced an OpenStreetCam competition for Australia. Telenav’s map team is awarding Amazon gift cards for the top image contributors until year end. Telenav’s product OpenStreetCam is a street-level imagery solution like Mapillary that lets you upload your own images and image sequences. It helps to detect errors and gaps in the data and supports you with images while editing.
  • The version 3.4 of ArangoDB, an Apache license native multi-model database, has been released. The new version supports now GeoJSON and includes the new search engine ArangoSearch.
  • The web app Cultural Gems was presented by the European Commission during the closing conference of the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018. The app intends to provide crowdsourced information on cultural and creative spaces in Europe and is pre-loaded with an initial set of points of interest from OpenStreetMap.
  • Katharina Przybill has published an article on “Conceptual compliance analysis with the OpenStreetMap History Database (OSHDB)”.
  • Matt Daniels has developed an OSM-based visualization of the world’s population in 3D
  • NASA provides a new look at Puerto Rico post-Hurricane Maria.
  • Google Maps in Australia have some unusual errors.

  • Tobias Knerr, from Germany, and Joost Schouppe, from Belgium, are the two newly elected board members of the OpenStreetMap Foundation. They take over from Peter Barth and Martijn van Exel. and 681 of 1041 eligible voters cast their votes (61.5%).The final result was determined by Single Transferable Vote.
  • Rory McCann sought the opinions of OSMF board election candidates on the reversal of the DWG decision on the status of the Crimea.
  • Frederik Ramm, OSMF Treasurer, has published his financial report for the AGM. This was discussed on the OSMF-Talk mailing list. There was specific criticism for not exchanging the entirety of the Bitcoin donation into currencies in which the OSMF incurs liabilities.
  • SunCobalt has published his report as auditor of the OSMF for the period 1st January 2017 to 31st December 2017.
  • Kate Chapman has published her report as Chairperson of the OSMF board.

Mapping

  • OSMyBiz (OpenStreetMap My Business), a website where business owners can add, correct, or update their business details in OSM as easily as possible, has been launched by the Geometa Lab of the University of Applied Sciences Rapperswil, Switzerland.
  • As announced on the tagging mailing list, Warin61 has reworked his proposal for ephemeral water. Ephemeral in this context means a very short duration of water flood that occurs infrequently.
  • François Lacombe has started the voting on his proposal for additional attributes on pipeline and water valves.
  • Leif Rasmussen is proposing to add intervals of public transport schedules. On the tagging mailing list he announced the start of the voting.
  • The French OSM community has mapped police stations in November as “Project of the Month”. Noémie Lehuby and Donat Robaux present the results on osm.fr. (fr) (automatic translation)
  • Quartz reports that Grab collect geodata themselves in order to optimise the distance of passengers to their pickup point. The article does not mention that Grab’s subcontractor GlobalLogic was and still is making controversial OSM edits in Thailand and Indonesia.
  • The International Date Line at +/- 180° longitude is causing many oddities. Unselectable nodes in JOSM, neighbouring elements that are thousands of miles apart in editors and maps, unroutable roads that cross this line and many more. A user opened a thread in the forum as he wasn’t sure if it is right to span a way over this invisible border as the way is considered as crossing the globe. However, he solved the issue on his own by splitting the way, half of the way is now in the Eastern and half in the Western hemisphere.

Community

  • The Zürich OpenStreetMap meetup is celebrating its 100th occurrence with a special cake.
  • Three members from the OSM Mali community went to the eastern city of Koutiala to organize, alongside with Saliou Abdou (International Volunteer from Francophonie deployed since January as OSM activist), a three-days training camp called KoriMapCamp in NGO AMEDD’s headquarters, for the benefit of a dozen of people previously trained in August. The program included: field mapping with Field Papers and StreetComplete, JOSM teaching and a one day mapathon. This camp got some financial support from Cafdo (Francophone Africa community for open data).
  • CouwelierTim has started to publish a weekly summary on openstreetmap.be and the forum on what has been discussed by the Belgian community on IRC or Riot, an instant messenger service coupled to it.

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • The passionate debates for HOT US Board elections have moved in the last two years to OSMF Board elections. Three previous HOT Board members/Executive director who lead the re-orientation of HOT are currently on the OSMF Board. The controversy from last year’s OSMF election surged again this year with two HOT members standing for election. For some OSMF members, the relation between HOT US, OSM and the OSMF, the role HOT plays in the OSM universe and if the influence of leading HOT members to the OSM project should be limited. Nicolas Chavent, co-founder and former Board Officer and Programs Director of HOT, pointed to the growing number of OSMF board members with a HOT background. This started a long and sometimes emotional discussion on the list, in which many discussion threads with new side aspects were started. Frederik Ramm, for example, suggested a Humanitarian Working Group within the OSMF, to break the current synonymous usage of HOT and Humanitarian OSM. Rory McCann criticised how HOT’s Code of Conduct is enforced – or not enforced – as the last HOT summit was in a country where same-sex sexual activity is illegal. One repeating topic is the manifesto of Tobias Knerr, who suggested to limit the number of OSMF board members to one per organisation.
  • DWG has published its report for the third quarter of 2018.
  • The minutes of the SotM Working Group meetings of the 8th and of the 29th of November 2018 have been published.

Events

  • Until January 3rd, 2019, scientists and other academics can apply as reviewers for the program committee of the academic part of the State of the Map 2019 in Heidelberg.
  • The event website for the SotM 2019 in Heidelberg just launched.

Humanitarian OSM

  • Kathmandu Living Labs has partnered with HOT US and mapped buildings in 7 homogeneous zones in Kathmandu based on new satellite imagery provided by USAID’s GeoCenter. The aim of the effort is to understand the exposure and minimize the risks from natural hazards. New imagery was used to add new buildings and to fix the quality problems created by the crowd-mapping response to the 2015 earthquake and poor quality imagery at the time. Pierre Béland compares the situation there to the current response for Butembo and deplores the similar ‘Tsunami of Mapathons Hit+Run Newbies’.
  • HOT will launch a fundraising campaign during December to raise $40,000 for 10 new micro-grants in 2019.
  • The 5th HOT Summit will take place in Heidelberg University, Germany September 19th and 20th of 2019. This is just before the State of the Map at the same location, so you have the chance to enjoy 5 days of interesting OSM related talks.
  • Chris Eshun, a third-year Geomatic Engineering student, provides his experience on working with the community mapping team in Ghana as part of HOT’s Open Cities Accra project.

Maps

  • The Wikimedia servers tiles.wmflabs.org and wma.wmflabs.org, that are providing OSM based tiles and a mini atlas, are still running on Ubuntu Trusty and will be shut down by the end of this year if no one volunteers for maintaining the servers. A Phabricator ticket lists some more details.
  • [1] The web art developer Hans Hacker has created a remarkable new online service. With just a few clicks, anyone can create a poster of the buildings available in OSM and download it for free. The poster shows a geographical fingerprint of the settlement of a region. You may want to browse through his other projects too.

Open Data

  • On Twitter Richard Fairhurst points to opentransportmap.info, a website aiming to provide data and visualization of estimated traffic volumes for the whole EU. The road network of OSM is used as the primary source.

Software

  • Fabian Kowatsch from Heidelberg Institute for Geoinformation Technology explains how to visualize the historical evolution of OSM buildings of your city using the ohsome platform for OSM History Analytics and QGIS.

Programming

  • Jochen Topf released the Osmium library 2.15.0, the Python bindings for Osmium PyOsmium, 2.15.0, the Osmium command line tool 1.10.0, and the OSMCoastline 2.2.1 program recently. The new Osmium library uses a lot less memory, with savings up to 50 percent. PyOsmium now uses PyBind11 internally to connect the C++ Osmium library instead of building on Boost as before. Jochen explains further enhancements on his blog.

Releases

  • JOSM is now available as Flatpak on Flathub, a software deployment utility with a sandbox environment and permission management in which you can run applications in isolation.

Other “geo” things

  • Twitter user Ash shows his greatest invention: the Mercator Globe.
  • Le Point stresses out the increasing importance of digital tools in Africa, as they help citizens to get involved and weigh in on political matters. An OSM based electoral map from Senegal is used as an example of citizen engagement.
  • Andrew Douglas-Clifford created with OpenStreetMap , LINZ and NIWA data a Far From Any Road map, showing New Zealand’s hardest-to-reach places. Some more information can be found at Reddit and NewsHub.

Mapping

  • OSM South Africa are raising funds on GoFundMe to purchase historical topographic maps of Namibia. If funding is successful, the maps will be tiled for use in OSM editors, just like the topo maps of South Africa itself which are already available.
  • Peter Elderson wants to revive the highway=trailhead proposal from 2015. According to his post on the tagging mailing list, in the Netherlands mappers have added the tag at all starting points for trails which have some infrastructure (parking, information, etc). However, there is some confusion over whether the term trailhead is appropriate for the purpose and who is already using it in OSM.
  • Apple has posted potential data problems in Korea such as building-road intersections, highway links without classification and roads with excessively sharp angles to MapRoulette where the challenges can be solved by volunteers.
  • Apple announced that they will map buildings in Buenos Aires manually using imagery sources and GPS resources.
  • On Techcrunch.com, Jon Russell reports how Grab is jamming the OSM community in Thailand by making inferior changes. The article quotes a local mapper with the words “OpenStreetMap is mostly craft, but they [Grab] attack OSM with an industrial mentality”. The article also mentions that 100 employees of Grab’s mapping subcontractor GlobalLogic of India have become members of the OSMF.
  • Grab responded to the critical TechCrunch article: Bangkok mapper Mishari Muqbil provides an extended reply to Grab’s press release.
  • The German community continued their annual ritual and mapped Christmas market features that can be seen on the Christmas market map (loads slowly). The fact that the map is quite D-A-CH-centric may be a result of the insufficient translation of the wiki site but more likely relates to the German passion for this kind of market.

Community

  • Phase 2 of Community Africa Francophone for Open Data (CAFDO) mini-grants (automatic translation) funded various OpenStreetMap activities organised by members of local communities in Western Africa: a mapathon in Koutiala, Mali; one week of training in Zinder, Niger; mapping of tourism-related objects in Ouidah, Bénin; a three-day training dedicated to ladies in Ivory Coast; a promotional workshop in Burkina Faso and a conference for local authorities in Senegal.

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • There are discussions in Australia to set up a local Open Source Geospatial organisation OSGeo Oceania as an OSMF local chapter.

Humanitarian OSM

  • The minutes of the board meeting of HOT US Inc. on December 6 have been published. The topics discussed during the meeting included the setup of an advisory board and the planned registration of a European branch in order to be eligible for EU programmes.
  • HOT announced a partnership with tech hub iLab Liberia and the local OSM community to introduce the Open Cities Monrovia project. As 90 percent of the population in Monrovia is living in areas with very high flood risk, the project aims to improve understanding of unplanned settlements and make the slum communities more resilient to natural disasters.
  • The project mamapa is teaching immigrants in Germany to contribute to international humanitarian mapping initiatives. The project, which is supported by BASF (Ludwigshafen) and CartONG, helps in a number of ways, i.e. assisting the activity of humanitarian relief staff on the ground, teaching immigrants new skills in geography and modern cartography, hastening their integration into German society and providing a directly appreciated humanitarian contribution.

Maps

Open Data

  • The Open Data Institute (London) announced four successful bids for funding under their local open geospatial data initiative. Two of these, maybe more, make use of OpenStreetMap data: in Oxfordshire local mappers and cycle advocacy groups will work with the council to improve cycle infrastructure, whilst Falkirk aims to improve access by community groups and individuals to a range of facilities.

Software

  • Stefan Keller announced (automatic translation), on the Swiss mailing list, an experimental tool for converting free text (German only) to the OSM opening hour syntax. Two different approaches are available for testing.
  • Fabian Schütt from the Statistical Office of the City of Stuttgart determined the walking time to the nearest public transport stop for every place in the city using the QGIS plugin OSM Tools from HeiGIT, which makes the functions of openrouteservice – such as routing, isochrones and matrix calculations – available to QGIS users.
  • Nils Nolde from Heidelberg Institute for Geoinformation Technology (HeiGIT) announced openelevationservice as a new endpoint within the openrouteservice API ecosystem. It queries a remote DEM for every vertex of a LineString or Point geometry and enriches those with altitude values. Ituses SRTM v4.1 as a start and you can easily test it using the interactive documentation in the API playground, even without programming.
  • Simon Poole provides some hints as to new features in forthcoming versions of Vespucci. Firstly, in a diary post, he explains how he has tiled OSM data for offline use in the editor. Secondly, he demos some work-in-progress on adding functionality to enable editing of turn restrictions.

Programming

  • Stephan Bösch-Plepelits made some changes to the Leaflet.TextPath library.
  • And here comes another little Christmas present from HeiGIT: In addition to their highly appreciated Python and R libraries HeiGIT Institute now offers an additional JavaScript API making it simple to use the openrouteservice ecosystem, covering the entire globe based on OSM, in web applications.

Releases

  • Find the changes in OSM Carto v4.18.0 here and OpenMapTiles v3.9 here.

Did you know …

  • this article from a year ago in which SeverinGeo explains why he thinks that the HOT US Inc governance should not to be replicated in the OSM Foundation.

Other “geo” things

  • Matthew Flint found an old, 1950s, town plan of Cardiff in a second-hand bookshop. It uses a very unusual radial grid for locating streets.
  • OSM contributor Mick Hicks tweets about how the extensive use of cul-de-sacs (dead-end streets) in suburban road layouts in the US over the past few decades makes the effective provision of public transport very difficult. He remarks both on his own observations from correcting TIGER data in Minnesota, and on recent press coverage of bus transport in Colorado Springs.
  • The BBC reports about account closures of Slack users who have ever visited a country imposed with US sanctions (e.g. Cuba, Iran, the Crimean Peninsula) or are citizens of such a country (via HOT mailing list).
  • The Guardian has a long article about Google’s commercial relationships with several US intelligence (spy) agencies. Google’s geospatial offerings, notably Google Earth, were a critical component in building this business.

Howto … OSM Promotional Leaflets 1 | © alexkemp, Andy Allan

Mapping

  • OpenStreetMap Ireland suggested a mapping task for the holiday period: adding all the buildings for a single townland. A few mappers (including Ciaran, Earl and Tshedy), had a go, but this may be another multi-year project for Irish mappers as there are over 60,000 townlands.
  • Simon Poole (CH), Christian Quest (FR) and sebastic (NL) performed their customary New Year’s Day edits to update boundaries of communes following mergers. In Belgium it was a group effort, for which preparations had already started back in June, as it involved many street name and building address changes.
  • Daniele Santini suggests adding a top_up=* attribute to a feature if it sells top-ups, for example for mobile phone credit recharge vouchers, over-the-air credit top-up, public transport credit recharge vouchers or credit recharge for prepaid credit cards.
  • Markus proposed a new value for the place key, place=peninsula , for mapping named peninsulas. During the discussion it became obvious that the tagging list is more in favour of natural=peninsula, a proposal declined back in 2008. The discussion also provides some useful information for people interested in philosophical questions, e.g. what is the upper size limit for a peninsula, or what is the difference between a cape and a peninsula?
  • Hufkratzer challenged the wiki description for building=pavilion as being a building providing facilities for users of sports grounds. However, he learnt that the description is fine according to British English, the language we are using in OSM. The question as to whether the term was wisely chosen if it means different things in other countries was not asked.
  • eteb3 was looking for a tag for the planter bike rack that appeared in the UK recently and is double checking if there are any unwritten rules or things to consider before using own values. After the discussion our wiki has one more documented tag: man_made=planter.
  • Axelos suggested implementing some kind of hierarchy for route relations. Others have pointed him to the similar, already used concept of super-routes / super-relations, something that has been very controversially discussed.

Community

  • In Kozikhode, India a team of volunteers is working hard to create a comprehensive digital map of the wards of Koorachundu Grama panchayat using OpenStreetMap.
  • Reddit user tseepra created a nice visualisation of the 70k nodes, 60k ways, and 160k polygons that were added over 2018 in Ireland. In the Reddit thread there is a discussion of how this was made using the QGIS Atlas feature.
  • Peter Elderson is currently working on sectioning very long route relations into relation parts with less than 300 ways. The basic idea is to make such relations more workable by splitting them into sections of one day’s walking. However, he is looking for someone who can help him to create sortable wikitables on a wiki page which are fed from a live query.
  • Wille Marcel, a GIS application developer from Brazil, has been elected as mapper of the month by OSM Belgium. He discovered OSM back in 2010 at an open source software conference and names the development of OSMCha as his biggest achievement.
  • Simon Poole has updated the contributor statistics for 2018.
  • CouwelierTim published a weekly chat summary of the discussions in the Belgian community from December 17th 2018 through December 23rd 2018. We hope you make yourself familiar with CouwelierTim’s weekly offering as we will not publish a regular reminder as part of our weekly digest.

Imports

  • omgitsgela requests comments for the planned statewide import of addresses in Massachusetts. The import of data from MassGIS, the public GIS database of the state, is comprehensively documented in the wiki.

OpenStreetMap Foundation

Events

  • The website for Open Belgium 2019, a conference for Open Knowledge and Open Data, is now online. The conference will take place on March 4th, 2019 in Brussels.

Humanitarian OSM

  • HOT published a series of videos about the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team webinars in 2018 and gave an outlook on the already scheduled webinars in 2019.
  • HOT is asking for proposals to improve the Tasking Manager. The update will enable the Tasking Manager to incorporate results from machine learning, including a validation and deconflicting process before the model output is pushed to OSM.

Maps

  • Larissa Vernier, an epidemiologist from Doctors without Borders, explains the motivation behind her choice of R for Epis (R4Epis) for her work. One reason is the spatial analysis functions, which help her to look for patterns, understand how fast a disease is spreading and decide on a plan of action. It would save a lot of valuable time if all epidemiologists could standardise on a single free software solution.
  • Mapbox is, no doubt, seeing a lot of maps over the course of a year. On their website you can find 18 maps with some background information of the maps that inspired them during 2018.
  • On his user diary alexkemp reports that he ran out of the OSM Promotional Leaflets he had received from Andy Allan. Hence, he tried to get the GitHub-hosted leaflet printed at his local print shop but they did not have the necessary fonts. In his post he describes his journey to get the required fonts.
  • The maposmatic instance on osm-baustelle.de is now offering an overlay style that renders allotments=plot.

Open Data

Software

  • Florian Schäfer announced a new command line tool that can convert between the i18n file formats and the custom format used by JOSM. The new tool langconv is part of the gradle-josm-plugin.
  • The OsmAnd team reports on several nice features and improvements they added over the past year and what we can look forward to in 2019.

Releases

  • A new stable version of JOSM has been released. Version 18.12 fixes memory leaks and outdated imagery entries, provides an animated “Getting Started” page with shining stars 15 days around Christmas and contains a lot of other fixes and improvements.

Other “geo” things

  • UnoSat created a map of the inundated areas caused by the tsunamis in Lampung province, Indonesia.

Mapping

  • A fool with a tool…” (… is still a fool) is probably not the right subject line if you want to address an issue on an international mailing list, even if you encounter an OSM element where name spacing is taken to an extreme level:
  • Disputed boundaries are a sensitive issue, and so are proposals as to how to map them. John Paris announced version 1.6 of his proposal for mapping disputed boundaries in OSM and requests feedback.
  • Konrad Lischka suggested extending the tag amenity=kindergarten with operator=, operator:type=charitable and organisation= to properly tag kindergartens that are operated as independent charitable entities.
  • Following the recent approval of the new key interval= for tagging the time between departures at any given stop (see Headway on Wikipedia), Leif Rasmussen continues with the next step and suggests the key departures= for adding the departure time for a given interval.
  • Minh Nguyen reports about his mapping of Oldenburg (Indiana), a city where street signs are in German.
  • In some countries the number 13 is considered as unlucky. In these countries the 13th floor is often omitted in multi-level buildings. The mapper ‘This Is A Display Name Desu’ asks how to deal with it when mapping building levels.

Community

  • A community representative from the Thai community will meet with the mapping lead from Grab to discuss recent quality issues caused by Grab’s activity. Mishari Muqbil is helping to prepare for the meeting and asks for input from the wider community on what topics should be addressed during the meeting.
  • “What use is OpenStreetMap?” John Whelan was asked by an employee of a municipal government. How would you have responded and where would you refer them to find further information? The answers to his question might help you too.
  • The interpretation of population limits in the OSM wiki for choosing the correct value for a place= tag led to a dispute between mappers in Turkmenistan. The issue is that the importance of a settlement in some countries is not reflected in the same way by the population number as it is in Western Europe for example. Joseph Eisenberg wrote a good summary of how to distinguish between the place-values without using hard population limits. Kevin Kenny reports on a similar discussion in the US and points to the outcome.
  • David Garcia, a cartographer, wrote an article on medium.com about why he is committed to the commons of cartography. As he lays out in the article, his turning point was his humanitarian contribution to OSM after the devastating cyclone Haiyan.

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • We want to repeat a tweet from the OSM Operations Team: “Thank you to @AssoGrifon 🇫🇷 and @iwayAG 🇨🇭 for offering us Tile CDN servers today. Both now up & already serving traffic.”
  • The German company Alpha9 Marketing Gmbh Co KG with its brand auskunft.de joined the OpenStreetMap Foundation as a Bronze Corporate Member.

Events

  • The 4th GeoPython Conference will take place on June 24-26, 2019 in Basel/Muttenz, Switzerland. The topics range from Python in general, geospatial webservices and geovisualisation to indoor mapping and modelling

Education

  • Yongyang Xu, Zhong Xie and Liang Wu from the Faculty of Information Engineering, China University of Geosciences, Wuhan, China, have analysed the road network in OSM and found out that the data in OSM is highly detailed and complex but also includes many duplicate lines which degrade the efficiency and increase the difficulty of extracting multilane roads. The team suggested a machine‐learning‐based approach to predicted multilane roads. Unfortunately the study is behind a paywall, hence, it could not be confirmed whether the research area has indeed many duplicate roads or if it is a misconception about OSM’s data model.

Maps

  • Scott Davies published a nicely styled Chronological Map of Walthamstow on Twitter that he made with OSM, QGIS and inkscape.
  • Paul Norman offers pre-rendered OSM carto tiles at low zoom levels for download. The files that are available for the zoom levels 0 to 6, 8, 9 or 10 could be useful, if you need a world map without high zoom levels and don’t want to set up a database server.
  • Juminet has created (fr)(automatic translation) an OSM map of the Ardennes region. He describes a clever method to determine orientation for markers, and shows the special attention his map gives to Christmas trees.
  • An interesting study about street names in Germany won an award at the Information is Beautiful Awards.
  • OpenSnowMap points out that a number of cross-country ski trails in the Jura are yet to be mapped in OSM.

  • Version 2.12.2 of the iD editor has recently been released. The new version allows a preset to control the “add field” dropdown, improves usability and performance, fixes a lot of bugs, adds localisation to label/description pulled from Wikidata, and further improves the presets.

Did you know …

  • … about get-map.org, a tool to create printable maps?
  • … how to run your own instance of uMap? A user asked in the forum and was pointed to a step-by-step guide.
  • … that Austria’s building coverage in OSM has reached 85 percent? That’s an increase of 21% compared with the beginning of 2016. Even the least-mapped municipalities exceed 50 percent coverage.
  • … Geofabrik’s tile calculator, that returns the number and size of tiles in a given bounding box.

Other “geo” things

  • The theory that the geography of a country determines its development is not new. However, Lionel Page disagrees and points to a road map of the border area between the neighbouring countries Finland and Russia, that shows significant differences although they are very close to each other geographically. To the critics that said one example does not falsify a theory, Lionel responded by naming similar examples in North/South Korea, Austria and Czechia (the Czech Republic), USA and Mexico.
  • Frost & Sullivan, a global business consulting firm headquartered in Mountain View, California, has chosen Mapbox’s mapping and live location platform as 2019 Platform of the Year.
  • The company Here, formerly known as Navteq and Nokia Maps, launched an app for planning and sharing rides called SoMo (derived from “social mobility”). The app aims to combine all public, private and personal transport offerings in a single system and adds social functions to share rides between personal contacts.

Mapping

  • The tagging mailing list has been very busy recently. The voting for four proposals has been started.
    • The key crossing:island=* is intended to indicate the existence of a pedestrian island at a road crossing.
    • The keys prepaid_top_up=*, prepaid_top_up:brand=* and prepaid_top_up:network=* can help in finding a location where you can buy a top-up card for your phone.
    • If you want to specify whether a power line is insulated, you might be interested in the optional key insulated=yes/no.
    • If there is a railway on a highway and this space is shared with vehicles, the new tag embedded_rails= will allow you to tag the highway, although the rails are mapped as separate ways.
  • One question that is regularly asked is the difference between waterway=ditch and waterway=drain. Eugene Podshivalov asked this question on the tagging mailing list and it became apparent that there is not yet consensus on the differences.
  • The city of Cologne, Germany, released (de) (automatic translation) its recent aerial images under a CC0 license and offers WMS services that can be used with OSM editors.
  • Konrad Lischka shows (de) how to query for selected information from OpenStreetMap with the Overpass API and how to visualise it with uMap using churches and church service times as examples (automatic translation).
  • Christoph Hormann continues his ironic recommendations on how to map for the renderer, specifically how to render arbitrary text.

Community

  • Ben Abelshausen is advertising for Open Belgium 2019, a conference that will take place on March 4th in Brussels. In his mail he invites everyone to submit a talk and announces the availability of early bird tickets. He is also promising to organise a community day later this year.
  • Martin Noblecourt mentions job offerings from CartONG on the talk-fr mailing list. The French NGO is looking for a trainee, a Missing Maps animator and more.
  • Martijn van Exel announced the release of a new MapRoulette version. Version 3.1.2 is now available in Japanese too. It allows you to share filtered result lists with others and to edit just the current object in JOSM in areas with a lot of data unrelated to the task at hand.
  • The Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona (CCCB Lab) features an article from Carlos Bajo where he explains how OpenStreetMap contributes to societal development in places where the government fails to provide basic services. He highlights the growing number of local contributions in Africa and the benefits of Open Data and OSM in particular.
  • A discussion in the German forum (translation) asks whether Mapbox are “taking over tagging sovereignty in OSM”.

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • Guillaume Rischard announced that the new Organised Editing Guidelines have come into effect. The guidelines cover “edits that involve more than one person and can be grouped under one or more sizeable, substantial, coordinated editing initiatives.”
  • derFred points (de) to the possibility of becoming a member of the OSMF without the regular membership fee of 15 GBP if you cannot afford membership due to economic reasons. If you are an active mapper you can apply for the Fee Waiver Program. You can also apply if there is no payment option for the membership fee available for you (automatic translation).

Events

Humanitarian OSM

  • Pete Masters thanks HOT Tanzania for helping a hospital in Tanzania to implement a patient origin tracking system by mapping the surroundings and training of the hospital staff. The system is intended to help the hospital locate the source of a disease and it is hoped that it might help to prevent the spreading of diseases and infections too, according to the website ippmedia.com’s reports.
  • Janet Chapman posted a review of 2018 for Crowd2Map, an initiative aiming to map Tanzania, in her user diary. She mentions the invitation to organise a mapathon at the UN, the award the organisation received at the last State of the Map in Milan and some of the talks she held during the year. Further information can be found on Crowd2Map’s website.

Education

  • The new curriculum (pdf) for French high schools states that all students should be introduced to geospatial data usage. One of the expected abilities in that domain is the ability to “contribute to OpenStreetMap in a collaborative way”.

Maps

  • [1] The website openstreetbrowser.org received an update that makes more detailed filtering for buildings available and now includes filters by building attributes such as type, age or height. The new map version also introduced office tags in thematic maps and provides more detailed popups in the Culture categories.

switch2OSM

  • A short tweet about an event in the headquarters of the Ordnance Survey, the national British mapping agency, about “Road Flows” led Richard Fairhurst to ask for more details. The event was about using OpenStreetMap for improving data quality. In addition, the answer revealed that the Ordnance Survey searches for road direction mismatches between their own and OSM data and then sends surveyors to verify if required.

Software

  • Many software projects use the fork and pull model approach for contributions. alexkemp explained the basics of this model in his OSM user diary after he faced this requirement for the first time when he wanted to update a Github-hosted project.
  • Mapillary has just released a desktop application for uploading large amounts of street-level imagery, which can then be used for editing OpenStreetMap. It is currently available for Mac and Windows. Learn more on the Mapillary blog.
  • Adam Rousell from the Heidelberg Institute for Geoinformation Technology reports that the latest version 4.7.2. of openrouteservice also includes information about access restrictions when your route takes you over roads that are marked in OSM as restricted (e.g. destination only roads, private roads etc.).

Programming

  • Karry explains how he wrote his own hillshade tile server for his project OSM Scout for Sailfish OS, a project to bring offline OSM maps to Sailfish OS, after the previously used hillshade tiles from Heidelberg university stopped working.
  • Reddit user nanothrowaway airs a lot of grouses about OsmAnd’s OSM Map Creator. Various redditors tried to explain why the data is kept in memory for efficiency reasons, but the OP maintained that it’s the use of Java which is the problem.

Releases

  • MyOSMatic, a MapOSMatic instance at osm-baustelle.de, has upgraded the front end from Bootstrap v3 to v4.

Did you know …

  • … you can use Traveltime Platform to create isochrones in several countries? One can create travel time polygons on a map, for example, “how far can I reach within 30 minutes by car/bicycle/public transport from my current location?”
  • … the always up-to-date OSM Software Watchlist?
  • outdooractive.com with OpenStreetMap maps?

OSM in the media

  • The German weekly newspaper Die Zeit uses OSM data to visualise (de) the distribution of various sports (from cricket to football) worldwide (automatic translation).

Other “geo” things

  • Matt Caywood, of Washington(DC)-based firm TransitScreen, announced the launch of OpenMobilityData – “the OpenStreetMap of transit” – a joint venture with non-profit MobilityData. The goal is an open data platform for transit and mobility data. The data have been seeded from TransitFeeds, which has been acquired by the new venture.
  • The Hindu, the second most circulated English-language newspaper in India, published an article about OSM, the OSM community in India and the use of OSM in the humanitarian sector.
  • The BBC World Service’s Business Daily programme aired an episode (select the download link on that page) devoted to the poor availability of modern up-to-date maps across Africa. This is the third episode titled “Africa’s Missing Maps” and mainly features businesses such as TomTom and the Ordnance Survey.
  • Maxor Technologies, DigitalGlobe’s parent company, announced that the WorldView-4 Earth observation satellite has suffered a defect in its attitude correction system. Due to this loss of a stability axis, the satellite can no longer be used for image acquisition. WorldView-4 was launched in November 2016, making it the youngest satellite in the DigitalGlobe fleet. SpaceflightNow reports that the planned lifetime was 10 to 12 years.
  • The British Guardian: “Off the chart: the big comeback of paper maps“.
  • Aaron Straup Cope writes about how the term “airport gates” has multiple meanings (for passengers, airlines, aviation authorities) and how this affects where they should be placed on maps of airports.

The OSMF Membership Working Group (MWG) investigated the unusual signups in advance of the recent OSMF board elections. 1 | © MWG © Map data OpenStreetMap contributors

Breaking News

  • The OSMF Membership Working Group investigated the unusual signups in advance of the recent OSMF board elections. The MWG concluded that the signup of 100 employees of the Indian subsidiary of GlobalLogic, an outsourcing firm providing OSM/mapping services to clients like Apple and Grab, was an orchestrated and directed campaign and that the applicants did not sign up voluntarily, personally and individually. The MWG expressed concerns that it was a possible attempt to influence the OSMF board election. The full report details all facts found during the comprehensive analysis of the signups. The report, which has been made available by Guillaume Rischard on the OSMF mailing list, has been sent to the OSMF board in advance (2018-12-26), but the board has not yet taken a stance on it. Also, the company GlobalLogic has not provided comment yet.

Mapping

  • Quite a few OpenStreetMap communities have responded to Facebook’s 10 Year challenge by showing how OSM has developed in 10 years:
  • Saeed Hubaishan challenged the table in the OSM wiki that shows the *_link type for roads that connect different highway types. The following discussion revealed that it seems there is no documented consensus and *_link roads are mapped more intuitively. The Wiki table mentioned was marked as not generally accepted during the discussion.
  • The OSM wiki says that the level tag for buildings is defined as a 0-based-index i.e. the ground floor starts with a zero. However, Tobias Zwick found a lot of buildings that have probably been mapped with a one-based-index in mind. There exist different conventions across the world how levels are numbered.
  • OSM UK has selected mapping of places in UK Food Standards Agency Hygiene Rating System as the 1st quarter task in 2019. This OSM wiki page explains how.
  • In his OSM diary Andres Gomez Casanova exhibits (es) his bicycle gear. He is using the equipment for 360-degree photography for Mapillary in Bogotá, Colombia.
  • Peter Rukavina explains in his blog how he created missing features in OSM and updated existing ones while he was linking anything with a geographic location from his blog posts to OSM.
  • François Lacombe’s proposal for additional attributes on pipeline and waterway valves has been approved.

Community

  • [1] Pascal Neis’ s mapper information How Did You Contribute now shows whether a mapper is an “active contributor” in accordance with article three of the Contributor Terms. An active contributor is allowed to vote in the case of a licence change and is eligible for the new OSMF fee waiver program.derFred questions the term “active mapper” as it is defined in the OpenStreetMap Contributor Terms and proves this with three impressive examples.
  • Jonah Adkins reports a couple of important items from the board of OSM-US. SotM-US will be held in Minneapolis in September, and as of January 2019, they do not have an Executive Director. Apparently, the person hired and the organisation proved to be “not the best fit for each other”.
  • 889 mappers who have been active in North Korea at some point received a direct message from Wonyoung asking about their mapping motive. The message is discussed in the German forum (automatic translation). The correspondent for weeklyOSM in Korea LuxuryCoop has taken care of the matter on that site.

Imports

  • Sloppy mistakes during the import of building data in Canada have led other mappers to demand stopping the import and thinking about reverting. For now the import has been put on hold.

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • Martin Koppenhoefer reminds the board that they were going to come back with some responses on the topic of Crimea. Heather Leson promised to respond “within the week” on January 7th.

Events

  • As the number of mappers steadily increases in the region around Louvain-la-Neuve in Belgium, a first meetup will be organised there on February 11th to get to know each other.

Humanitarian OSM

  • The Red Cross Belize helps their Government with disaster training, procurement of equipment and OSM training to better understand risks and how to respond to those risks.

Education

  • OpenSchoolMaps, an initiative of Swiss OSM for promoting open maps in education, announced a new education package for creating thematic online maps with uMap and a workshop about open maps and the open source software H5P, that can be used for creating educational material.

Maps

  • Maarten Hermans wrote a guide on how to query data from OSM, process the data with R’s sf and dplyr packages and interactively display the result on OSM and historical map backgrounds using Leaflet or as a WMS web service. In his example he was looking for roads with “gangen” (Dutch name for small historical passages within the inner city) in their name and displayed the result in OSM and historical maps after he processed the data.

switch2OSM

  • Quique Pernas provides a twitter thread explaining the usefulness of Osmhydrant.org for foresters and other fire fighters.
  • The search engine DuckDuckGo changed its maps from Mapbox to Apple Maps.

Software

  • The premium version of the Blender-OSM plugin has been released!
  • Fabian Kowatsch, from HeiGIT, explains how to use historical OSM data from the ohsome API to compare different regions based on their attribute completeness over time with a simple API call. He uses the tag surface=*. for streets as an example.

Releases

  • OSM’s main map style, Carto, has received another update. As the maintainer Daniel Koć wrote in his OSM diary, version 4.19.0 has added the rendering of boundary=protected_area and revised it for reserve boundaries. The new version also added more barrier icons and support of amenity=vending_machine and improved a lot of other things.

Did you know …

OSM in the media

  • A news article from the publisher Heise repeats (de) (automatic translation) the position of a forest owner who blames online maps, which allow users to share information, for being partly responsible for unfettered biking in forests and thus causing problems. The one-sided article repeats the demand for a ban on providing online geospatial information about the property of a third party.
  • Teresa Jolley pointed in a tweet to a video interview with Brian Prangle from OpenStreetMap UK about the question as to whether the public sector should make more use of OSM.
  • A collaboration between the Belize Red Cross and the American Red Cross made it to the local news on Channel 5 Belize according to a tweet from Belize GEO.

Other “geo” things

  • Richard Fairhurst’s New Adlestrop Railway Atlas has been appreciated by fans of old railways from around 2004 when it first appeared. However, it never covered the whole of the British Isles. Certain minor distractions in the ensuing period (including Potlatch, Potlatch2, cycle.travel, tilemaker) have limited additions. Now Richard hints at a completely new edition.
  • GBIF (Global Biodiversity Information Facility) has analysed how much of its data on the location of biological organisms originated from citizen scientists. The answer is over 500 million records making up more than 50% of the total.
  • As Andy Mabbett wrote in his mail to the talk mailing list, the ARIADNEplus Project, a new European initiative for Digital Archaeology and Cultural Heritage, uses OpenStreetMap to display the locations of its records.
  • A number of German media outlets (public Radio Deutschlandfunk (de) (automatic translation) and ARD’s Tagesschau (de) (automatic translation)) reported about Google Maps’ inability to calculate even simple routes between Palestinian towns but, on the other hand, how Google can easily provide routes in the same area if the destinations and sources are Israeli settlements.
The reports close by saying that the locals help themselves with “other mapping apps that are kind of Wikipedia”.
  • Kashmir Hill of Gizmodo elaborates on the dilemma of a South African family living in Pretoria, for whom imprecise IP geolocation services regularly bring uninvited guests accusing them of internet-related crimes. If it happened in South Africa, it supposedly always happens at the coordinates of their property.
  • Atlas Obscura reports about David Garcia’s cartographic representation of the 100 largest islands summarised in one chart.
  • The German IT publisher heise.de reported (de) (automatic translation) possible problems with older GPS devices on April 6th, due to a “week count rollover” in the GPS system. The week in the GPS system is encoded with 10 bits and hence, it can only address 1024 weeks. The last rollover was in 1999. As the system will be changed and the resolution of the week counter will be increased to 13 bits, the next rollover will be in 8192 weeks.

    Revert a four-year-old building import? 1 | © Map data OpenStreetMap contributors

Mapping

  • The proposal for crossing:island=*, which is intended to indicate the existence of a pedestrian island at a road crossing, has been approved.
  • The new attribute embedded_rails=*, which can be used if there is a railway on a highway and this space is shared with vehicles, has also been approved.
  • The proposal about the mapping of disputed boundaries in OSM can now be voted on. John Paris’ proposal has reached version 1.6 and incorporates a lot of feedback based on previous versions.
  • Stefano Maffulli suggests formalising the key building:soft_storey= so that it can be used if a building has at least one building level that is significantly more flexible or weak in lateral load resistance than the levels above and below. According to his proposal, the tag has already been used 13,000 times, mainly during efforts to map buildings for the Open Cities Kathmandu project.
  • The question as to whether the tag landuse= should be used based solely on landuse or (as it is now as a mixture of that and landcover) can lead to emotional discussions. This time the question "How should areas, which are considered as forest by authorities but look more like scrub or scree, be tagged?", led to a discussion with around 100 responses on the tagging mailing list.
  • An email on the Talk-Asia mailing list summarises individual assessments made by volunteer mappers about Grab’s GlobalLogic OSM team’s edits in Thailand.
  • Andrzej thinks that the current addressing schema does not cover all, even basic scenarios. In his mail he points to several UK-related issues and to a summary page in the wiki. This started a longer discussion on talk-GB.
  • In his OSM diary will_p shares his thoughts about the usage of addr:place in the UK and lists some examples which don’t meet the wiki definition by varying degrees.

Community

  • OSM announced the 5,000,000,000th node on Twitter. The node was added by Kazykan and belongs to a building in Russia.
  • Geochicas tweeted an infographic summarising their activities, projects, alliances and community growth during 2018.
  • Faith Taylor from the University of Portsmouth is looking for volunteer community members in Austria who can help with a mapathon during the European Geosciences Union General Assembly in Vienna the week of the 8th to the 12th of April.
  • The "Thanks" extension has been installed on the OSM wiki, making it easy to thank other wiki contributors for their improvements.
  • Mateusz Konieczny attempted to list the different roles of contributors in the OSM ecosystem.

Imports

  • Frederik Ramm suggested reverting a four-year-old building import in Ulster County, New York State, because only simple squares had been imported instead of the correct building outlines. Two years ago the import was featured by Worst of OSM.

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • The Membership Working Group’s report on the unusual signups before the OSMF election and the board’s reaction to it sparked off numerous discussions. There have been multiple questions (some of which have so far gone unanswered) and requests for GlobalLogic employees to be excluded from the foundation.
  • Since the beginning of the year, the OSMF has received applications for new Local Chapters from Ireland and Uganda. All current applications can be found on the overview page.
  • In a blog post titled Entryism in Open Communities, Steven Feldman wonders whether he was wrong to consider concerns about corporate takeovers. He concludes that OSM and OSGeo have become mainstream; will be of interest to commercial entities; and the potential for conflicts of interest is likely to grow. He suggests revisiting the articles of association to ensure adequate protection.

Events

  • OSGeo’s flagship event, the Free and Open Source Software for Geospatial (FOSS4G), which will take place from the 26th to 30th of August 2019 in Bucharest, Romania, is open for registration.

Also note that FOSS4G Italy will take place from the 20th to 24th of February in Padova.

  • The State of the Map Africa, which will take place this year in Grand Bassam, Ivory Coast from the 22nd to the 24th of November 2019, is still looking (Google docs) for speakers. Proposals and nominations of suitable speakers are invited.

Humanitarian OSM

  • HOT expects that the Microgrants program that was established in 2017 will provide grants to 8 to 10 communities to improve their ability "to address the barriers they face to scaling their work". The program will focus on diversity and representation, innovation, sustainability and continuity.

Software

  • Sascha Fendrich reports that the openrouteservice (ORS) team at HeiGIT, in collaboration with the VROOM project, has contributed an ORS routing backend to the VROOM software. Now, VROOM is able to solve travelling salesman and other vehicle routing problems using OpenStreetMap data. A dedicated VROOM API will soon be available via openrouteservice.

Programming

  • The Linux Foundation announced that the application base created by Mapzen is being merged into The Linux Foundation. Mapzen discontinued its services at the end of January 2018, due to the lack of a sustainable business model.
  • Will the iD editor start beeping soon? 😉 (via GitHub)

Releases

  • A new version of iD has been released. The highlights of version 2.13.0 are the inclusion of quality issues from KeepRight, support for MapRules, a service to use presets from third party websites such as Radiant, and the possibility to quickly centre and zoom on a feature, note, or data issue.

Did you know …

  • … the JOSM Trick to switch between Dual Images (lower / higher zoom levels), you simply define a second Image Layer with a lower zoom max (i.e. z18) to avoid switching to the high zoom image when you want to interpret information from the lower image first.
  • … the website mapschool provides an introduction to digital cartography in English, Italiano, Español, Svenska, Français, 日本語, Português, Deutsch, Nederlands, Український and 한국어.
  • … PyQGIS 101 is a QGIS Python Tutorial designed for non-programmers.

OSM in the media

  • English and German (automatic translation) media have also covered the signup of 100 GlobalLogic employees, which caused the investigation by the OSM Membership Working Group discussed above.

Other “geo” things

  • The website MIT Technology Review features an article on how crowdsourced maps can help driverless cars by solving major current issues such as the slow update cycle of road data and the sparse mapping of roadside infrastructure. According to the article, Mapillary, which creates maps and catalogues roadside objects based on uploaded streetside images, is assumed to have potential to fill the gap of missing data for autonomous driving. Mapillary, which is free for non-commercial and personal use, charges licence fees from its commercial customers.
  • Rose Wanjiru reflects on Kenya’s Capital FM about the importance of GIS for settlement development in Kenya and how OSM can contribute to it.
  • A post from a Pokémon Go player on Reddit asks how often Niantic applies updates from OpenStreetMap. Suggested dates of last update include mid 2016 and early 2017.
  • Switzerland’s wonderful history of detailed mapping means you can see how the country’s glaciers have shrunk over time.
  • In Germany, "DasDing" reports (automatic translation) that Google Maps (the smartphone application) now has warnings about speed cameras. However, this would forbid (automatic translation) the use of the app by people driving in Germany (and any other places with similar legislation).
  • TomTom has sold its telematics unit for $1 billion in order to better compete with Google in maps and navigation.
  • Finally two fascinating movies. Ten months ago photographer Páraic McGloughlin was able to compile a great animation "Arena" using images collected over months from Google Earth. His twin brother, Kevin, surpassed this with his stop-motion-style animation "Epoch".

Mapping

  • After his first proposal to add stores which sell top-ups for prepaid services such as phones or public transport failed, Danysan has reworked the proposal and is giving it another try.
  • An isthmus is a narrow strip of land, bordered by water on both sides and connecting two larger land masses. Contributer SelfishSeahorse suggests using natural=isthmus to tag it.
  • Andrew from Apple shares on several mailing lists, including Ecuador, Chile and Turkey, that they have created multiple tasks on MapRoulette. These tasks are determined using Apple’s data analysis tool Atlas. Amongst the tasks created he mentions about creating tasks for correcting intersections of buildings and roads and overlapping lanes.
  • The Brumadinho dam disaster, a dam failure that caused at least 157 deaths, was reflected in OSM two days after the catastrophe. Simon Gascoin describes how he investigated the extent of the mudflow using Sentinel-2 imagery and noticed that OSM was already up-to-date. This Twitter message shows the extent of the disaster.
  • Mapillary have added another 42 different features which are detected automatically from contributors’ photos.
  • Some OSM mappers go the extra distance in mapping. HonourableNath travelled to Yaguine at a time when rivers were flooding. Her post (automatic translation) on the OSM Mali blog shows some of these travel modes, as well as the before-and-after mapping of the area.

Community

  • Frederik Ramm’s question as to whether there should be ethical standards for corporate members has not yet received an answer. It is probably easier to discuss the question in advance of any specific case arising.
  • The ‘Mapper of the Month’ chosen by OpenStreetMap Belgium is Guirec Halflants a.k.a. Correcaminos604 from Belgium.
  • Tigerfell published his thoughts about what information should be kept for documenting the history of OSM and invites you to join the discussion.

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • The Board has not yet published its reasons for deciding on borders in Crimea. Martin Koppenhoefer puts this topic back on the agenda.
  • Discussions about the 101 membership applications of GlobalLogic from India continue unabated.

Events

  • Paul Desgranges gave a talk on 29th January at the Floss Conference in Grenoble introducing the participative mapping project OpenStreetMap!
  • Thomas Rupprecht announced the first OSM “Stammtisch” for OSM communities in the Wiener Becken. The first meeting will be on 28th February at the Leobersdorf maker space,
  • FOSDEM 2019 in Brussels took place on 2nd and 3rd February 2019. The program for the Geospatial devroom, which was started a few years ago, was made available. Almost all talks were recorded.

Humanitarian OSM

  • As part of the EuYoutH_OSM Erasmus+ Project Ciaran Staunton provided training to students from Portmarnock Community School on using an LG360ActionCAM and Mapillary in preparation for their humanitarian mapping trip to Lesotho in February.
  • Ramani Huria blogs about the collection of soil samples across Dar es Salaam on a 2 km grid by community members. The samples were assessed professionally and the data will be used to underpin flood hazard modelling.
  • HOT’s website features an article about Tanzania’s first patient origin tracking system. It explains why the origin of a patient matters and how HOT helps to improve the situation.
  • The HOT website hosts two articles from a 15 year old student who got mobile phones provided to the Peruvian GAL School by a NetHope and HOTOSM device grant. In the two articles Ana Paula Figueroa and Abril Gomez describe why they decided to record all sexist advertising and the reasons for analysing the degree of sexism that is generally accepted by Peruvian society, and how they proceeded to achieve that goal.
  • The Toronto Observer describes in an article how volunteer Torontonians helped some of the most vulnerable communities in the world in Nigeria at a mapathon organised by Missing Maps held at the Toronto headquarters of Doctors Without Borders.
  • The United Nations, in this case the UN Support Office for Somalia (UNSOS), which has been active in Somalia for many years, has recently developed a mapping initiative for the country, which is to serve peacekeeping and conflict prevention. In an unusual step for the UN, the organisation has decided to process all data provided directly in OpenStreetMap and thus support all humanitarian institutions. The first project of this initiative is described in the OSM wiki in detail. The HOT Tasking Manager will be used for managing this project. The first public mapathon will take place in Italy at the FOSS4G-IT 2019, as Alessandro P. posted on the Talk-it mailing list.

Maps

  • Disappointed by the mapping quality of camping grounds in OpenStreetMap and having in mind that often only an appropriate special interest map helps to improve the situation, Sven Geggus started Open Camping Map. In a blog post he explains some further details about his motivation and some technical info.
  • If you are looking for a restaurant with vegan or vegetarian offerings, this online map and this Android app make sure you don’t go home hungry.

switch2OSM

  • Lesson learned: “… it’s better to put it right on OpenStreetMap,” writes FragDenStaat, a German NGO in their blog. They explain this in detail and describe their way from Yelp via Google to OpenStreetMap. Recommended for imitation. (automatic translation)

Open Data

  • Christoph Grenz created (automatic translation) a nice website that displays information from the city of Bonn’s open data portal on a slippy map with additional functions such as edit with JOSM links and comparisons between the datasets and OSM.
  • thinkWhere is developing a portal to improve access to official European geospatial open data. The company has partnered with EuroGeographics, an umbrella organisation representing 63 European state organisations such as the UK Ordnance Survey.

Licences

  • The Open Data Institute published a guide to licences for geodata. Although it mainly targets commonly sourced UK geospatial data, it covers OSM’s licence as well and compares the major licences for (British) Ordnance Survey data with Google’s proprietary one.

Software

  • OSMF’s local chapter in Germany, FOSSGIS, is now operating (automatic translation) the Open Source Routing Machine (OSRM) based routing backend for OSM’s main website. The BSD licensed routing engine, hosted on two servers, calculates the routing graphs and provide the requested route directions. Like the Graphhopper service, which is provided by the company Graphhopper, OSRM gives directions for cars, bicycles and pedestrians.

Programming

  • For many years Richard Fairhurst has silently managed the API key for Bing Imagery on OSM. He is now asking on Github for someone else to take on the arduous task of wrangling Bing’s bureaucracy, in order to ensure that imagery continues to be available in all editors.
  • Bryan Housel’s tweet reminds possible mentors or people who want to suggest a project for the Google Summer of Code to visit the GSoC wiki site.
  • GTFS feeds, i.e. timetable data for public transport and associated geographical information such as stops, often do not include geodata about the routes. Thanks to the open source tool pfaedle, by Patrick Brosi from the University of Freiburg, these data can now be enriched using OSM data. The MITFAHR|DE|ZENTRALE offers the enriched GTFS feeds for Baden-Württemberg for download. The tweet of MITFAHR|DE|ZENTRALE, which draws attention to this service, also points to the theoretical background of the map matching.

Releases

  • openstreetbrowser.org’s recent update allows you to filter category results by certain criteria. For example, you can now filter by Italian restaurants.

Did you know …

  • … the nicely written manual on how to find your way around the OSM universe as a beginner and how to make your first edits? Created by Volker Gringmuth aka kreuzschnabel, the comprehensive manual describes the OSM basics, the data model and what help is available for the first edits, and at the end it touches on relations and JOSM plug-ins.
  • street-patterns a tutorial on using OpenStreetMap road data to make physical visualizations using Fablab equipment?
  • OSM SEED, a collection of Docker files that allows you to run your own OSM microcosm. This can be useful if you want to add your own data to a closed data pool, for example, for planning scenarios in a city administration or for training. A presentation is available on YouTube.

OSM in the media

  • The European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) published recently Cultural Gems, an OpenStreetMap based service to help tourist to find “cultural gems” in European cities. The Dundee Evening Telegraph is amused by the fact that the city’s toilets are registered as “worth seeing”.
  • A local media outlet interviews Franco Benedetti (@mweper) (automatic translation) from Funes, Argentina, and tells how the city map has been greatly improved.
  • The Yorkshire Post explains why Google’s recent price hike is the reason that many apps, with Adobe Lightroom being the most prominent example, have stopped working properly. The article also explains why reliance on free Google services is a bad thing and predicts that OSM will gain an ever-increasing importance.

Other “geo” things

  • The British House of Lords discussed if digital mapping restrictions should be imposed. Owen Boswarva summarised the discussion on Twitter with Lords are concerned that “a foreign-owned company that bases its services on Russian mapping software” is “pinpointing our civil infrastructure” with a “major high-definition survey”. Lord Wallace of Saltaire pointed to the interesting fact that “… a suspicious foreigner taking pictures of houses would have been stopped by some doughty Britain such as Mark Francois and challenged in case he was a German”. The issue with overeager Germans mapping the world is apparently much older than OSM.
  • House of Commons Library (UK) has created a set of neighbourhood names for every Middle-Layer Super Output Area (MSOA) in England and Wales — and they want to borrow your local knowledge to help correct and improve it.

Mapping

  • MSF (Doctors Without Borders) invites everyone to a Missing Maps Mapathon in Berlin on 26 February 2019 from 19:00 to 21:45. Since high-quality maps are essential to help people in crisis areas, experienced mappers are invited to participate, and to train and monitor newbies.
  • In his user diary, alexkemp describes the issue with Mapillary overblurring the uploaded photos. According to his post, he considers 92 percent of all blurs on the 111 photos he investigated as “stupid blurs”.
  • Apple has created MapRoulette challenges, mainly in South-American countries (we reported earlier). Andrew has now published a list of all challenges. Most new challenges deal with road problems.
  • The OSM official blog provides some background information about the Organised Editing Guidelines.
  • The proposal about the mapping of disputed boundaries in OSM has drawn some attention and was discussed in other places, in the German forum (automatic translation) for example. However, version 1.6, which has incorporated a lot of feedback based on previous versions, has just reached 17 yes-votes (14 no, 2 abstain) and hence is not considered as approved.
  • Voting has started for the key building:soft_storey= that can be used if a building has at least one building level that is significantly more flexible or weaker in lateral load resistance than the levels above or below.

Community

  • The proposal to reform the way that copyright is enforced in the EU was discussed previously in weeklyOSM #425, and the outlook appeared slightly positive. However, according to Julia Reda, a member of the EU parliament, a Franco-German deal made things worse and the likelihood of upload filters for user-generated content are on the rise.
  • Tobias Knerr invites developers of open source software from the OSM ecosystem to add project ideas for the approaching Google Summer of Code to the OSM wiki.
  • A film by Observatoire des Mobilités Africaines (OMA) featuring Guy-Maurel Konan, the founder of OSM Côte d’Ivoire, uses examples from Abidjan to show what detailed information can be found on OSM. Michelin helps with the registration of roads and traffic signs.
  • Vicksun reports that the first interactive webinar session with the the Nigerian OSM community was held successfully .

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • A thread on osmf-Talk entitled “voting fraud” was started in mid-January by Rihards. He asked board members and candidates to comment publicly on the GlobalLogic actions and to disclose any association or foreknowledge about their activities. He stressed that perceived conflicts of interest and perceived election fraud could be very damaging to the OSM as a whole. There have been 59 responses to this thread to date, it appears that the passionate discussions about “governance and conflicts of interest” have shifted from the usual election-time discussions to wider ones about OSMF membership. In the course of the discussion, members asked their representatives for openness and transparency, which was met with some pushback – see the e-mail from Heather Leson and the reply from Allan Mustard.
  • Rihards points out on the OSMF mailing list that “senior GL employees that have worked with people who have participated in this thread. Who are friends with candidates to the board. Anybody can see this in various social media.” The thread about the 101 membership applications of GlobalLogic from India broke off at this point, without those addressed having commented on it.
  • Dorothea, the Administrative Assistant to the OSMF Board of Directors, has summarised the events surrounding the signup of 101 GlobalLogic employees, including links to individual circular resolutions and mailing list discussions, on the OSMF website.
  • Wikipedia’s article on GlobalLogic mentions the “incident” around the OSM elections. That page has for some time been tagged in wikipedia as “reading like an advertisement”; arguably this latest change makes it less so.
  • SunCobalt uses graphics to demonstrate (automatic translation) that while Germany (and others like Italy, Russia and Poland) have little interest in the OSMF compared to the number of mappers, in India and the USA interest in the OSMF even exceeds the interest in mapping.
  • The OSMF Board of Directors has replied with justification for overturning the DWG decision on the application of the “on the ground rule” to Crimea published in December. The resulting thread contained considerable criticism, but also some speaking in favour of a “least strife” goal. Despite being asked over a week ago, the board has not communicated with the wider OSM community beyond the relatively small audience of osmf-talk.

Events

  • The State of the Map working group published a blog post which gives some organisational details about the upcoming State of the Map in Heidelberg, Germany. The post provides the estimated timeline for the conference, a list of contact e-mail addresses, the reason for the monkey on the logo and some other insights.
  • Steven Feldman reported his experiences at and around the first geomob BCN in Barcelona, a meetup of geoinnovation fans that was started back in 2008 in London. Because of the great success, the next date for Barcelona has already been set for 24 April.
  • Crowd2Map Tanzania Development Trust and Una Quantum invite you to a mapathon to be held in Rome, at Millepiani Coworking, via Nicolo Odero, 13, 00154 on 6 March.
  • The winning logo for the State of the Map Africa, which will take place this year in Grand Bassam, Côte d’Ivoire from 22 to 24 November 2019, was revealed. It was created by Christa Obeng Nimako. An overview of all submissions can be found here.

Humanitarian OSM

  • Following Stefano Maffulli’s talk at the FOSDEM 2019 about using OpenStreetMap and QGIS to build resiliency maps for emergency preparation, Hartmut Holzgraefe created a resiliency overlay style for his MapOSMatic instance based on the presented prototype.
  • In an interview with The Citizen, Bornlove Ntikha, from Tanzania, explains how he joined HOT’s Technology and Innovation Department and the goals he is pursuing. He is currently working on the design of drones to be used by HOT to map the suburbs of Dar es Salaam.

Maps

switch2OSM

  • Geoawesomeness, a blog about geospatial technologies, is of the opinion that OSM is becoming the mapping standard. In an article the website provides the reasons for their opinion.

Software

  • Trufi (Taxi de ruta fija) Taxis with fixed routes are an important part of public transport in Bolivia. A Bolivian-German group called Trufi Association has launched the public transport app Trufi especially for Cochabamba, Bolivia. Now they want to extend the service to El Alto (second largest city in Bolivia) and ask (es) (automatic translation) the OSM community for help.
  • MapRoulette has been updated to version 3.1.3 with a new Korean translation, support for simplestyle Task styling, new leaderboard features and more. Martijn van Exel writes about it in his diary.

Programming

  • Nick Whitelegg is looking for affordable hosting of an OSM database for his Hikar project, an augmented reality app for walkers and hikers, which he introduced during the recent FOSDEM. He plans to extend the coverage of Hikar, which is currently limited to Great Britain, Ireland and Greece

Releases

  • A new stable version of JOSM has been released. Version 19.01 adds a tab with installation details in the “About” popup, improves behaviour for retaining the history when unglueing nodes, optimises “Zoom to selection” behaviour, changes the default settings for auto-resizing the tags table to optional, and a lot of other fixes and improvements.

Did you know …

  • …. the map farmshops.eu, which shows farm shops, market places and vending machines for food and milk in Austria, Germany, Switzerland and some neighbouring regions? The developer recently added beekeepers.

OSM in the media

  • Lucas Selfslagh reports for Medium on the development of his community open world video game “Ghent Theft Auto” and why he chose OSM as the database for creating his world’s data.

Other “geo” things

  • Tom Lee, of Mapbox, lists privacy recommendations for developers and how to deal with their users’ location data. The recommendations are the result of Mapbox’s own approach to dealing with users’ location data.
  • Ian Bancroft asks on Twitter Why does @googlemaps continue to insist that I have to go via either #Montenegro or #Macedonia in order to reach #Kosovo from #Serbia, and vice versa? The answers include references to OSM and related services.
  • Melanie Eckle, from the Heidelberg Institute for Geoinformation Technology (HeiGIT), shared her experience at the Red Cross congress “Digital in civil protection” congress, where she and her colleague presented information about Missing Maps and related work of the GIScience/HeiGIT team, including openrouteservice for disaster management and ohsome, the OpenStreetMap History Data Analytics Platform.
  • New York’s police demand that Google remove the new feature that displays the location of speed cameras from Google Maps.
  • EOX announced their release of a cloudless composite of 2018 captured Sentinel-2 data.
  • The beta version of Google Earth Studio allows users to render animations from Google Earth data. The website digitalproduction.com explains (de) (automatic translation) their experience with the tool.

[Actual Category]

  • On March 23, 2019, an Action Day called Save Your Internet against the EU Copyright Directive is planned with demonstrations in many cities. On Saturday, February 16, the first, spontaneously organised demonstration, with about 1000 participants, took place in Cologne, as Heise Online reports (automatic translation).
  • Julia Reda, the member of the German Piraten Partei in the European Parliament, has published on her website the current drafts for Article 11 (Linksteuer / Presseleistungsschutzrecht) and 13 (Uploadfilter) of the new EU Copyright Directive. She expects the vote to take place in the plenary sessions of Parliament between 25 and 28 March, on 4 April, or between 15 and 18 April.
  • In a comment on netzpolitik.org, Markus Reuter calls (automatic translation) for action against the EU copyright directive in real life.

Mapping

  • Nuno Caldeira announced on Twitter the excellent work done by the newly created Portuguese OpenStreetMap Telegram group mapping buildings on Porto Santo island, in the Madeira archipelago. They will do monthly mapping challenges, such as this one, to improve OpenStreetMap in Portugal.
  • The decision of the StreetComplete maker to create challenges for adding default values like foot=yes on highway=residential or access=yes on amenity=playground caused lengthy discussions on the tagging mailing list and the forum (de) (automatic translation).
  • Tshedy reported on the MapLesotho blog about an exhibition at Avani Maseru which was held with the help of Fingal County Council and Action Ireland Trust. The “tremendous progress from 2013 to 2018” in Lesotho was featured as image of the week on the main wiki page.
  • [1] GOwin wrote a blog post about the first mapping party organised by MapaTime in Marikina, Philippines. Sixteen mappers showed up at the first field mapping activity since 2016, which started as early as 6:30 am. The picture-rich post also details the organisation of the event.
  • The vote for the key departures=, which is designed to indicate the departure times for any given stop, just started. The proposal follows the recent approval of the new key interval= for tagging the time between departures.
  • Voting for natural=isthmus, for tagging a strip of land, bordered by water on both sides and connecting two larger land masses, and for natural=peninsula has recently started.

Community

  • Stefan Keller criticises Mapzen and the Linux Foundation, which recently took over Mapzen’s projects, for concealing the main data sources, the OpenStreetMap project, in their public announcements.
  • Christian created an online map that displays the use of animals. In his blog he explains (de) (automatic translation) that he is interested in animal protection-related open data.
  • Chris Beddow and Daniela Waltersdorfer J wrote, in the Mapillary Blog, about the need for more detailed mapping of kerbs.
  • The election for the OpenStreetMap US Board, which the weeklyOSM recently mistakenly called an OSMF chapter, will start on 25 February and end 28 February. Nominations for the OpenStreetMap US Board are open until Sunday 24 February.

Events

  • Joost Schouppe announced this year’s Belgian National Mapathon, which is scheduled on:
    • March 27 in Brussels (FR), Leuven, Louvain-la-Neuve and Mons
    • March 28 in Brussels (NL), Liège, Namur and Ghent
    • March 30 in Louvain-la-Neuve.and Liège.
  • The SotM-France 2019 will take place from the 14 to 16 June in Montpellier.

Humanitarian OSM

  • HOT has recently held a Tasking Manager Stakeholders’ Workshop in Washington, DC at which development goals for 2019 were discussed. The focus will be on the functionality to group users into suitable teams based on the users’ backgrounds, statistical features to improve mapping projects and their data quality, the introduction of machine learning workflows into mapping and the observation of usability and user flows.
  • HOT features an article from Peter Ward from the GAL School in Cusco, Peru about the geodata collection for testing their hypothesis that closer rubbish bins means less rubbish on the ground.

Maps

  • Lukas Loos, from HeiGIT, introduced a first beta version of the OpenStreetMap History eXplorer (ohsomeHeX). It uses ohsome (OpenStreetMap History Data Analytics Platform) to aggregate OSM data of a first set of selected features into a set of world-spanning hexagonal grids in a configurable temporal resolution. The goal is to allow the exploration of the history of OpenStreetMap data in time and space at varying scales. Further improvements are in the pipeline.
  • Utagawa Hiroshige is one of the great masters of Japanese printmaking. George has created an OSM-based map that geolocalises “impressive images of Japan’s great landscape” made by Utagawa Hiroshige. Antoine Oury has written an article about this on ActuaLitté. (fr) (automatic translation)

Open Data

  • On 13 February 2019, the Brandenburg state government, Germany, passed a bill amending the Surveying Act and providing for the future free use of geodata by surveying authorities. With the amendment to the law, digital geodata will, in future, be made available to the surveying authority free of charge. The offer covers nearly 330 digital data records and data services altogether. These include, for example, high-resolution aerial photographs, maps of roads and properties or the representation of entire landscapes and elevation models. Brandenburg publishes its open data on the Internet portal DatenAdler.de under the license dl-zero-de/2.0.
  • The European Union has launched the third Eudatathon. Participants, who are asked to develop apps and visualisations using open data made available by the European Union, can win prizes of up to €15,000.
  • Ellen Tannam published an interview on siliconrepublic.com with Séan Lynch, the man behind the project openlittermap.com. In the interview he explained his motivation, the benefits of OSM’s open data model and the hopes he has for his project in light of the global litter crisis.

Licences

  • The OSMF Licence Working Group has written a Licence Compatibility guide for our current licence ODbL 1.0 and made the evaluation results of the Linux Foundation’s “CDLA (Community Data License Agreement) Permissive” licence available.

Software

  • On Twitter, Quincy Morgan presented a preview of an upcoming feature for the iD-Editor, a tool that shows validation issues to the user while editing. In response to an enquiry from Pierre Béland, Quincy explains that, for example, the upload of untagged objects with area=yes will be blocked. A test version is available here.
  • The WordPress plugin OSM from MiKa is now compatible with WordPress 5.0. This version of the plugin supports the “Classic Editor” and the new “Gutenberg Editor”. MiKa has also implemented 200 new icons and support for the humanitarian OSM style.

Releases

  • OSM’s main map style, Carto, has received another update. As the maintainer, Daniel Koć, wrote in his OSM diary, version 4.20.0 has added the rendering of boundary=aboriginal_area and boundary=protected_area with protect_class=24. The new version also dropped support for leisure=common, lightened major buildings and added support for oneway arrows for footways, cycleways and paths as well as a variety of other improvements.
  • OsmAnd was released in version 2.5 for Apple’s iOS operating system. The most notable new feature is access to their OsmAnd Live subscription. The app can be downloaded from the iTunes Store.

Did you know …

  • You might have stumbled across fictional data in OSM. Now you can point the authors of such unwanted data to opengeofiction.net. Martijn van Exel asks for help to grow his fictional town and connect it to the rest of the world.
  • Following her tweet that kerbs are become increasingly important nowadays, Daniela Waltersdorfer published an article about kerbs, why she thinks their importance is growing, opens questions with regards to mapping them in OSM and how “curbs”–or, as they should be correctly named “kerbs”–should be added in OSM. She draws special attention to transition points, i.e. where kerbs are lowered, as these are important features to pedestrians, cyclists, and especially to those with reduced mobility. On Twitter, Tobias Jordans points to the parking lane viewer/editor on zlant.github.io as an easy way to add parking information to OSM.
  • … about the supplementary descriptions of the tags used for representing roads and paths as areas, resulting from the original proposal by Marek_kleciak? In 2018 Tomasz_W wrote wiki pages for area:highway= pedestrian, footway, path and cycleway, which are, however, currently at odds with the rules defined in the original proposal.

OSM in the media

  • The Berliner Morgenpost used Hans Hack’s Figuregrounder tool to create a quiz that challenges its readers to identify Berlin locations on the basis of the building outlines from OSM data.

Other “geo” things

  • Mapbox published a community impact summary for 2018, which highlights Mapbox’s social engagement and details some of the 167 non-profit projects they support.
  • Listverse.com shows ten areas on Google maps where the borders between states are not clear.
  • Users of ESRI’s ArcGIS Online have already contributed vector data and aerial images for background maps (“Community Maps”). Now ESRI also allows users to edit these data. The edit review process takes one week and inclusion in the main database takes up to three weeks. Needless to say, OSM is a bit faster.
  • The New York Times used the Openrouteservice API to derive walking distances from major subway stations in New York City for their analytical piece “Where the Subway Limits New Yorkers With Disabilities”.
  • Dmitry Filippov, a student of “Information technology and applied mathematics” at Moscow Aviation Institute (National Research University), created a startup, “Heavy Geeks”, where he transferred the map of the entire real world into the game “Parallel 42”.

Mapping

  • If the inventor of highway=unclassified had known how many discussions were going to be held about it, he/she would probably have named it differently. Florian Lohoff asked a question about the distinction between highway=unclassified and highway=residential and has received around 50 responses so far and still with an upward trend. (Nabble)
  • Stefan Keller presented (de) (automatic translation) an improvement to his webtool, which converts freely formatted opening hours copied from web pages into the syntax of opening_hours. As previously noted on the Swiss list(de) (automatic translation) he is seeking feedback.
  • Mapillary features an article about the lesser-known OSM tool, Deriviste. Deriviste, introduced by Richard Fairhurst in October 2018, allows users to create OSM data while looking at Mapillary images. For example, a click on an image is translated into a data point. The comprehensive blog post contains background information and details how Deriviste should be used, including practical examples.
  • Yuu Hayashi announced (ja) (automatic translation) a new proposal to change the Japanese road types. This proposal includes cutbacks of redundant tags and content improvement that corrects the gap between global standards and Japanese tagging. He asks for community feedback and is thinking about starting the vote on 10 March.

Community

  • OpenStreetMap France announces (fr) (automatic translation) on Twitter that a donation campaign has raised 10,081 €. The first use of this funds was to buy extra server RAM.
  • On the Talk-GB mailing list Frederik Ramm asks if anyone knows of a non-profit organisation that has moved from the UK to elsewhere (prompted by the "lack of clarity" over Brexit). Simon Poole elaborates some more reasons – including that the UK doesn’t have a form of incorporation that is well suited to a non-profit like OSM.
  • The nominations closed on 20 February 2019 for the board election of OSM US and five people will run for five seats.
  • The "Mapper of the Month" February 2019 chosen by OpenStreetMap Belgium is Volker Schmidt (OSM voschix). He has contributed to OSM for nearly 9 years and recently has been mainly active in Padova, where he currently lives.

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • The minutes of the Licence Working Group meeting on 14 February 2019 have been published. Topics included the handling of inquiries from law enforcement agencies and a letter from the Belgian Ministry of Defence.
  • "Can you help make OpenStreetMap.org faster in Brazil, or Australia/New Zealand?" asks the Operations Working Group as the demand on OSM services is increasing and for example reaching around 65 Mbps in Brazil.
  • The OSMF Membership Working Group (MWG) uncovered the unusual signups in advance of the recent OSMF board elections and concluded that the signup of 100 employees of the Indian subsidiary of GlobalLogic (GL) was an orchestrated and directed campaign and that the applicants did not sign up voluntarily, personally and individually 1. The findings were sent to the OSMF board at the end of December and later shared with the membership by the MWG. In February GlobalLogic offered to withdraw the memberships following an online meeting between OSMF board and GlobalLogic representatives at the end of January. During the regular board meeting on 20 February 2019 the Board decided to accept GL’s offer to withdraw the memberships. The OSMF also made a summary of the events available to the public.

Humanitarian OSM

  • HOT has set up four mapping tasks after a 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck the Peru-Ecuador border region.
  • HOT is looking for a new logo for its HOT Summit 2019 in Heidelberg, Germany. The deadline for the participation in this contest is 6 March 2019.
  • HeiGIT reports on what’s going on with the MapSwipe app, a micro-tasking app for supporting mapping, for example in the humanitarian sector. A next step is, for example, the integration of the results of machine learning based building detection.
  • Melanie Eckle, from Heidelberg Institute for Geoinformation Technology (HeiGIT), has been invited to present HeiGIT as well as HOT during the Geo4SDGs at the Geospatial World Forum 2019 in Amsterdam. She will provide an overview of current HOT projects.
  • The minutes of the HOT board meeting on 7 February 2019 have been released.
  • The author Nicole Martinelli, who belongs to the team behind the Resiliency Maps website, published an article about the importance of open data and tools for disaster resilience. One interesting point is that she uses San Francisco as an example.
  • HOT announced the availability of an Instagram page, which you can follow to receive the latest updates.

Maps

  • [1] Qwant, "The search engine that respects your privacy", based in Paris, has launched (fr) ( automatic translation) "Qwant-Maps". The service is based on OSM data. Qwant follows OSMF’s copyright guidelines and promotes our project with an additional link to LearnOSM.

switch2OSM

  • On his blog Krzysztof Grajek explains the use of prefabricated docker images for setting up one’s own OSM tile server as an alternative to the Google Maps service, which can become expensive if your website has higher traffic volumes.

Open Data

  • The winners of the Open Data Day mini-grants, which are provided by the Open Knowledge organisation, have been announced. Some OSM related projects are amongst the winners.

Software

  • OsmAnd Online GPS Tracker, not to be confused with well known OsmAnd navigation, has been upgraded to version 0.4. The new version allows its users to share the track between specific times and to send their location with a timer, i.e. it stops sending the current location after a defined time.

Programming

  • In a tweet Julien Coupey announced his results of the recent Karlsruhe Hack Weekend, which look interesting even if you are not a Chinese postman.
  • The company Komoot, know for its OSM based cycling and hiking app and the geocoder Photon, has an open vacancy as Backend Engineer.
  • The German Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure is sponsoring the project TARDUR (de) (automatic translation) (Temporal Access Restrictions for Dynamic Ultra-Flexible Routing) of Heidelberg University and GraphHopper GmbH as part of its mFund programme. The project aims to improve the usage of access restrictions with temporal conditions in OSM.
  • mmd would like to introduce limits of 5000 tags per object and 32,000 members per relation for the OSM API. In the ensuing discussion, Simon Poole expresses his doubts about the introduction of "arbitrary" limits.

Releases

  • Quincy Morgan announced the release of the new version of iD. The highlights of version 2.14.0 are the introduction of live issue flagging and feature validation with the inclusion of recommended fixes, integration of Telenav’s ImproveOSM data detection tools to identify missing roads, as well as various other fixes and improvements. The full changelog can be found here.
  • QGIS has reached version 3.6. This version includes new features such as a new decorator for titles, map canvas copyright and title decorations can now be centred on top or bottom, and the requirement to select a feature before you can edit it. There are many more new and improved features that can be read about in the changelog.
  • The lightweight desktop GIS software Simple GIS (for Windows) has been upgraded. Version 11 allows you to build custom data forms, adds support for layer selection when converting pdf to Geotiff, can now deal with ArcGrid and File Geodb datasets, and adds many more new features.

Did you know …

  • … the possibility of recording the bus lines that serve a bus stop without having to record the complete route? The "route_ref" tag allows you to enter the line numbers at a bus stop and thus helps others to enter the complete route later.
  • … the swift LocalFocus-Batch-Geocoder? The geocoder uses open data from OSM, OpenAdresses, and Who’s On First via a copy-and-paste interface.
  • … the wiki page listing the maps generated from OSM?
  • … Joel Hansen’s quick guide to quickly drawing many buildings with JOSM and the buildings_tools plugin?

Other “geo” things

  • Mikel Maron, head of community at Mapbox and an OSMF board member, elaborated on the importance of mapping, open data and crowdsourcing efforts, such as HOT, in responding to natural disasters. Rapidly evolving technologies can help governments, communities, and aid agencies reduce the impact of natural disasters. He points out that on this basis the transport and logistics industry is in a position to support crisis initiatives proactively, promptly and precisely.

About us

  • We have good news! weeklyOSM will have a version in Brazilian Portuguese (pt-br), aimed mainly at the Brazilian community. Collaborators are welcome! Please contact us if you want to help.

Mapping

  • Yuu Hayashi postponed the start of voting for the proposal of Japan Tagging/Road Type. As the content of the proposal has changed due to the discussion, he has asked for further feedback.
  • Mateusz Konieczny created wiki pages for tiger:CPI, tiger:CLASSFP, tiger:FUNCSTAT, tiger:LSAD, tiger:MTFCC in an attempt to document unclear meaning of these tags since each is used more than 22,000 times. Anyone aware of the meaning and use of any of these tags is welcomed to contribute. Currently all of them are described as “it is dubious whatever it should be present on any object”.
  • The recently released version of JOSM now complains about a popular imprecise tag shop=yes, used over 149,000 times despite better tagging usually being available. In the next release, available as JOSM-latest, there are some other new warnings, for example about: leisure=nature_reserve on nodes, boundary=administrative and landuse=residential tagged on a single object and suspiciously narrow highway=pedestrian.
  • The proposal for the key departures=, which was designed to indicate the departure times for any given stop, was declined.
  • The proposals for natural=peninsula and natural=isthmus have both been approved.

Community

  • Issues with attributing OSM when using our data are nearly as old as our project. Richard Fairhurst addresses the issue of non-compliant attributions in a comprehensive post on the mailing list. Based on the responses it appears that the issue is not that important for other mappers or they are resigned to current practices. (Nabble)
  • The annual general meeting for the Swiss OpenStreetMap Association will take place on Saturday 30 March 2019 in Basel, Switzerland.
  • On the occasion of the OSM France’s donation campaign (we reported) ZDNet presents the OSM project under the title “Small fundraising for large project”.

Imports

  • Giovanni Cascafico announces the planned import of Italian fuel stations using a dataset from the Ministry of Economic Development (Ministero dello Sviluppo Economico).
  • Microsoft has released 12,663,475 computer generated building footprints for Canada under the Open Data Commons Open Database License (ODbL). Canadian contributors signal problems that need to be fixed before import. Please discuss it with the community if you plan to use the data. This follows the release of 125,192,184 building footprints for the USA some months ago.
  • After the Digiroad Bus Stop Import by the Finnish Transport Agency (FTA), the Helsinki Region Transport Authority (HSL) is now also planning an import of stop positions in the Helsinki region and announced their intention in the Finnish OSM forum. Further information can be found on the corresponding Wiki page.

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • The minutes of the OSMF board meeting on 20 February were published. They discussed the GlobalLogic issue, Brexit, the 2019 budget, and whether the Etiquette page should stay on the editable OSM wiki.
  • FOSSGIS e.V., the German OSMF chapter, will fund (de) (automatic translation) the operation of the server infrastructure for openstreetmapdata.com, a data download service provided by Jochen Topf and Christoph Hormann.
  • OpenStreetMap UK reports about the success of their Talent Directory as Andy Mabbett delivered an OSM training event for Open Data Manchester. They hope to announce further exciting projects which any UK-based user can join here.
  • Kate Chapman, from the OSMF board, sent an email to all OSMF members and announced a “regular update email to help OSMF members to stay on top of all the latest”. Kate mentioned the following points in her email: OSMF Updates – February 2019, links to the web pages of the Working Groups, the Board of Directors, the Local Chapters and the Advisory Board, and she also mentioned the page where the previous reports can be found.
  • The association OpenStreetMap France has published (automatic translation) a post explaining the services provided by the association. It also gives an idea of the change in the demand on their servers and tries to explain its variation.
  • The minutes of the Membership Working Group meeting of 22 February have been published.

Events

  • Impressions and recordings of the lectures of last year’s State of the Map Asia, in Bangalore, have now been published.
  • OpenStreetMap is offering scholarships to attend the State of the Map 2019 in Heidelberg thanks to funding from sponsors. Three levels of scholarships exist and you can apply until 30 March 2019.
  • The call for participation for the State of the Map 2019 is now open. If you can contribute with a talk or presentation for one of the tracks: OSM Basics, Community and Foundation, Mapping, Cartography, Software Development, Data Analysis and Data Model, or User Experiences you are asked to submit a proposal by 25 April 2019. Two innovations need to be highlighted:
      1. The track “OSM Basics” for presentations intended for people not overly familiar with the OSM ecosystem (20 minutes – like most other lectures), and
      1. The category “Extended lecture” for “Great ideas” (40 minutes).

Presentations for the “Academic Track” can be submitted until 30 April.

  • Melanie Eckle reported about two OSM related events during the International Week against Racism in Heidelberg. On 11 March the Mamapa project is being introduced (teaching immigrants about humanitarian mapping) and on 21 March there is a related mapathon.

Humanitarian OSM

  • HOT is asking advanced mappers using JOSM to map buildings in the Colombian region Barranquilla to prepare for a refugee influx from Venezuela as the political situation continues to deteriorate. The call is limited to experienced mappers due to problems with some pre-existing errors from prior mapping.
  • HOT is offering a job as an “Advisory Board member” focusing on finance.
  • The Heidelberg University details the past and future of MapSwipe, an app for phones that can be used to map human settlements from satellite imagery. During the past 2.5 years the app has helped to identify places that have not been mapped so far. The team is currently working on extending the scope to allow the mapping of individual building footprint geometries.
  • CartONG and 510/ Netherland Red Cross have measured the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 2.8. “Achieve universal health coverage” in DR Congo and Malawi using the openrouteservice isochrone API to assess the accessibility of health centres. They also developed a demo dashboard using openrouteservice for that. More info.

Maps

  • [1] Sara Acosta investigated (es) (automatic translation), on eldiario.es, an image of the cycleway infrastructure of Europe, that is often shared on the Internet, and why this version, created from OSM data, is incorrect. By contacting Andy Allan, developer of OpenCycleMap, she found that the exact origin of the graphic is uncertain. The OpenCycleMap presents the existing OSM data in much more nuanced manner.

Open Data

  • After a two-month competition, OpenStreetCam now has more than 2.2 million images in Australia and New Zealand. The Telenav Map Team used these contributions to train OpenStreetCam so it can now automatically detect more than 80 sign types specific to those countries.
  • Esri revealed in the ArcGIS Blog the possibility of displaying large datasets in 3D using the ArcGIS API for JavaScript. This removes the previous limit of 2,000 objects. The article explains, with examples, how to create a 3D map overview with OSM data.

Software

  • HeiGIT introduced openfuelservice. This new service offers close to “real world” estimations in terms of fuel consumption (gasoline and diesel), emissions (CO2, CO, NOx, THC) as well as cost assumptions for a growing number of car models. A first experimental version has been integrated into openrouteservice maps. This way you can check for the ecological footprint of your planned route. At the moment it is using a combination of data from the British “Vehicle Certification Agency” and the steadily growing “Open Citizen Science Platform” enviroCar.
  • The OSM Tools plugin for QGIS has been superseded by the ORS Tools plugin. Nils Nolde points out the various changes that have been made to the plugin besides the name change. Emphasis is placed on the revamped GUI. The plugin integrates Openrouteservice APIs into QGIS.

Programming

  • In his OSM diary user kastellano presented the project Videomapia. It combines georeferenced videos on YouTube in a map view with an OSM layer. The stored trips are displayed as an overlay and make it possible to exactly start the videos at the selected location.
  • The OpenLayers project has asked for donations for work on version 6. Of the USD 300,000 collected so far, USD 150,000 have come from Swisstopo.

Releases

  • Quincy Morgan announced the update of iD to version 2.14.3. The new version allows the user to toggle validation rules on and off, improves validation functionality, fixes five reported bugs and brings some more improvements.
  • A new stable version of JOSM has been released. Version 19.02 mainly introduces support for Canadian English and adds a new function for calculating distance to the nearest GPX point, as well as various other minor enhancements.
  • Tilemill 1.0.0 has been released and is a reunion with the fork Tileoven by florianf. Tilemill was originally developed by Mapbox as a development environment for CartoCSS styles, before they switched to JSON-based styles and a proprietary software-as-a-service platform called Mapbox Studio and left Tilemill to its own devices.

Did you know …

  • … freemap.sk, the open, interactive map of Slovakia based on OSM?
  • … the campaign “Fridays For Future”, the Friday protests of students across Europe which were triggered by the 16 years old Swedish activist Greta Thunberg? The interactive map is based on OSM.
  • … the difference between cycleway= opposite and cycleway = opposite_lane? Both indicate that cyclists are allowed to ride in either direction down a one-way street. “opposite_lane” additionally adds that the cycle lane is marked.

Other “geo” things

  • Clemens Jacobs has been looking into the data quality of citizen science observations of organisms. This research aims at using geographic context as an information source for estimating the plausibility of an observation, e.g. of a bird, which was reported to a citizen science portal collecting such data from volunteers. To this end, approaches were developed which use OpenStreetMap to capture the geographic context. He used the ohsome, OpenStreetMap History Analytics platform by HeiGIT, to predict the plausibility of a new observation of a species.
  • For the online magazine CityMetric, Henry Dyer looked at London railway stations that cross borough boundaries. Using OSM data he consolidated his findings into a short list.
  • The website Sketchplanations illustrates the coastline paradox in a short sketch in its weekly edition.
