OSM data analysis with OpenStreetMap Analytics [1] | go to OpenStreetMap Analytics

Mapping

  • Article on the disaster response (automatic translation) for the Ecuador earthquake from the Spanish language School of Data (Escuela De Datos), highlights how the response can be visualised in new tools like OpenStreetMap Analytics featured above.
  • Pascal Neis announced in his blog that one can not only search changeset comments in the application OSM Changesets. “You can now search for any term in any tag value of all OSM changesets,” Pascal says.
  • Mapbox bought three million square kilometers of satellite imagery from Digital Globe. Simon Poole asked for a visualization of which regions are new and got a reply that this will follow soon.
  • There will be server maintenance works on 9th and 10th of May. OSM API will be read only during this time, therefore you cannot edit OSM. More information and updates can be found at the OSM Wiki.

Community

OpenStreetMap Foundation

  • The minutes of the March OSMF board meeting are final.
  • The OSMF board are seeking volunteers who are willing to create and join a Membership Working Group, which would handle everything related to OSMF membership, something that was handled by board members in the past.
  • OSMF treasurer Frederik Ramm published the budget (PDF) for the year 2016 which leads to a larger discussion about how the OSMF will run out of funds at the end of 2017 if they can’t enlarge their income. Additionally Simon Poole warns that in case of damage (e.g. fire at the OSMF hosting site) the OSMF might loose its independance.
  • The OSMF board wants to expand the range of corporate memberships. To this end the board presented this draft, which is an intense discussion on the OSMF-talk mailing list. In future there will be more, higher-priced levels, most applicable to large companies. The revenue situation of the OSMF is to be improved. Frederik Ramm explains the motivation and intentions in a post on OSMF Talk.

Events

Humanitarian OSM

  • [1] Martin Raifer, aka tyrasd, (the developer of overpass-turbo), developed the tool OpenStreetMap Analytics on behalf of HOT. Martin said to weeklyOSM: “The main focus of our work is aimed at creating an intuitively usable tool that can get a glimpse behind the creation of OSM data for non mappers also.” The Knight Foundation who funded OpenStreetMap Analytics says on the website: … “Helping journalists, humanitarians, academics, government officials and others determine the quality of data in the OpenStreetMap database for a user-defined area, depending on the topic of interest.” The source code is available on GitHub.
  • Updates to the OSM response to the earthquake in Ecuador
  • OSM and earthquake in Ecuador related blogs:
  • Pascal Neis with “MappingEcuador” shows impressive numbers: more than 2,300 mappers, nearly 300,000 buildings and almost 3,000,000 map changes. Mhairi O’Hara summarized the ongoing activities in Ecuador.
  • Article about #MappingEcuador: a collaborative strategy to create new maps of the areas destroyed by the earthquake. (automatic translation)
  • Noah D’Mello describes in ComputerWorld how in five recent humanitarian crises of recent years, where stability and assistance was brought to the affected people by open source projects.
  • Kerstin Ewald and Noah Wintzer wrote a nice article “The Digital Remeasurement of the World”. They describe vividly how Nama Budhathoki with his club Kathmandu Living Labs (KLL) has contributed in Nepal using OSM to address the consequences of the earthquake in 2015. Worth reading even and especially for beginners! (automatic translation)
The article was first published in the German newspaper “Neues Deutschland”. (automatic translation)
  • Digital Journalism students are mapping under guidance in Ecuador and learn to assess properly the importance of OSM for rescue teams.

Maps

switch2OSM

  • Simone Cortesi notes that mediawiki is currently discussing the future of OSM maps in Wikipedia.

Open Data

  • The Open Data Barometer 3rd Edition of the WWW-Foundation compares in a ranking the open data listing of many countries in the world.
  • Tom Steinberg, open data and transparency activist, claims at civichall.org that the open data and transparency movement is too polite against politicans to achieve great results.
  • Javier Carranza Tresoldi philosophizes in Geoawesomeness-blog about the contagious evangelisation of OpenStreetMap in Central and Latin America.

Software

  • The OSM-based Android app Velociraptor shows like Waze or HERE the current speed and the speed limit. The speeding alerts can be adjusted.
  • Cheap ruler of Mapbox is a collection (JavaScript) on methods for length, area and angle calculation. It is “cheap” because they do not count on the ellipsoid, but with approximate formulas. The code is free software.

Programming

  • Google Summer of Code: The OSM related projects are online.
